Early WM29 Buyrate Not Looking Good, Tyson Kidd Update, Booker T’s Heel Turn

wm29-gameday

– While the official buyrate is still months away from being released, early estimates for the pay-per-view are coming in and they do not look good. Even though WWE stated publicly that they were confident that WM29 show would sell similarly to last year’s record-breaking show, the company substantially lowered their internal projections in days leading up to WrestleMania. According to one source, the buyrate is “downright shocking.”

tweeted the following on Tuesday regarding his road to recovery:

– As we reported a few weeks ago, there had been plans for to turn heel. Those plans have reportedly been dropped and there is now talk of becoming the new heel General Manager of SmackDown.

What did they expect? Predictable match outcomes, 3 week builds leading upto the PPV, rematches no one wanted to see. I’m not surprised at all that the buyrate sucked.

    • pwnez

I’m glad the buyrate is looking bad for a couple reasons. First, this proves you need good build-up. There is no such thing as “the match will sell itself;” I hate when people say that. If the build isn’t interesting, fans won’t care. Second, this proves part-timers can’t single handedly carry the company. This shows that it’s the product that is bad. Rock, Lesnar, Undertaker, Punk, and Jericho couldn’t save WrestleMania. That right there says something.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002196281205 Kenneth Anderson Jr.

Punk is not a legend. Do not include him in that Part-timer/Legend list. Other than that i agree.

        • pwnez

I never said he was a legend but he is a big time player in the WWE. No one could save ‘Mania from being a disaster.

          • Forceton Banfodder

Triple H could’ve helped by staying out the ring and putting someone more deserving up against Brock. That whole storyline was as stupid as it was pointless.

          • pwnez

HHH has to feed his ego though, we all know that. I’m not excited whatsoever to see HHH vs Lesnar III. The cage match stipulation doesn’t do a thing for me either. Ryback vs Cena doesn’t sound intriguing either.

          • Forceton Banfodder

check and check. I had high hopes for Triple H, but its obvious that he considers himself bigger than the WWE itself.

Ryback vs Cena is only uninteresting to me because I’m convinced Cena is going to have at least a 5-6 month run so I don’t think Ryback has a chance of winning.

          • Kjhaltz

HHH got that Vince McMahon disease.

          • Forceton Banfodder

            tru dat

          • Kjhaltz

Makes it feel like HHH is entering the octagon what do you mean?

          • Forceton Banfodder

If it was truly an octagon match, I would rather see Batista or Shamrock in there with Brock. People who actually have MMA training… If it’s just a steel cage match and Triple H, I’m not nearly as interested.

      • Scott Kinnard

The Taker/ Punk had a decent build up given the short amount of time they had. I’m not sure what kind of build up they would have done had Paul Bearer not tragically passed away. That’s what happens when you don’t push new stars. You go to the old timers- who still perform great but can’t work a full time schedule.

        • dae

Tragic death but kinda ironic due to the timing. Yeah, I wonder how the storyline would’ve been built (around The Streak, a bunch of stupid talk with nothing going).
I didn’t want to waste $60 on seeing rematches, either. Youthful stars not being pushed isn’t the problem – the problem is the lackluster storylines and the fans are speaking out buy not buying the program and turning off Raw halfway through. If WWF/E can’t see this, they’re in trouble!
Meanwhile, I made the correct call on the four big matches and even said there was going to be a swerve in the Shield match (but thought it would be Randy Orton, not Show, who would’ve laid out his teammates and during the match – close enough!)

  • The Optimist

To be brutally honest, they deserve it for putting on an unspectacular show. Hopefully WWE will learn from this and create some interesting feuds and main events which don’t just involve part-timers for next year.

    • http://twitter.com/AJCampbellNYG Andrew Campbell

I attended WrestleMania and RAW the next night with a group of friends, and we all enjoyed RAW so much more than ‘Mania. There was no comparison. ‘Mania was such a disappointment.

      • http://twitter.com/nickdoubleD Nicolai

Ill bet! Raw was a WAY better show than mania!

        • http://twitter.com/AJCampbellNYG Andrew Campbell

Definitely. The CROWD made that show.

          • currygoi

yes. the crowd made that show. but they also had some pretty decent matches that night. i enjoyed barrett vs miz very much

          • http://twitter.com/AJCampbellNYG Andrew Campbell

I know, Barrett vs Miz was a great match. I was really into it, I even started the first “Let’s go Barrett” chant 😀

    • Captain Jeff

No part timers equals no star power though.

      • http://www.facebook.com/dan.kincaid.7 Dan Kincaid

Those stars of the past weren’t suddenly stars, they were built up by WWF/E, are they not able to do that anymore?

        • http://twitter.com/mrzeegrr Eric Zeigher

          Yes they can. Ask Ziggler.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002196281205 Kenneth Anderson Jr.

yeah but they crushed him the next Raw…

          • http://www.facebook.com/dan.kincaid.7 Dan Kincaid

I can’t really go with that. An easy way to gauge if someone is becoming a star is to ask a friend that doesn’t watch wrestling if they have ever heard of the wrestler in question. I’m willing to be alot haven’t. Not taking anything away from the guy, but they have to book him to be important also and they usually don’t.

          • http://www.facebook.com/dan.kincaid.7 Dan Kincaid

            bet, not be

  • Captain Jeff

Why are they shocked? Two of the three main events were rematches. They also did a horrible job of setting up the mid-card. They need better planning for next year. Enough of the lack of buildup and boring creative. Real fans see through it and don’t bother watching. Aside from the Taker/Punk buildup and match the rest of Mania was awfully disappointing.

    • eots

All three of the main events were rematches, Punk vs Taker happened at Breaking Point 2009 and Hell in a Cell 2009.

      • thaShowstoppa

That wasn’t billed as rematch, those matches had no meaning to what we saw at Wrestlemania. Seriously off that logic, almost every single match at Wrestlemania is a reamtch.

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002196281205 Kenneth Anderson Jr.

Ryback vs Henry and Shield were original matches.

        • eots

Well yeah and that’s what’s wrong with WWE right now, they are just recycling feuds every few years and expecting people to forget about the previous ones and get excited as if this is all brand new.

The point shouldn’t be that it is irrelevant to what we seen at Mania 29, the point should be that if they are going back to a previous feud then it should be ongoing or at least referenced instead of treating the audience as idiots who will buy whatever the announce team say.

Why would I pay to see something I have already seen if it’s not adding a new chapter to the overall story? Just because WWE bill something a certain way doesn’t mean we should all wipe the recent past from our memory. Imagine watching another scripted TV show, for example Doctor Who, the Cybermen turn up and they write it as if they have never encountered them before and just expect the audience to believe this with no explanation.

WWE needs to be developing their storylines and new stars in a way that make people invest in the characters and they are terrible at that now. Hence why they keep going back to characters they built when they had to get people to invest so the company would survive. You never had one single feud between any of the attitude era main events where they just ignored previous feuds between characters and just re-wrote a brand new storyline as if the past didn’t exist.

    • dae

Don’t forget, not all of the titles were on the line, either. Plus, they relegated the one title to the preshow! To think, this is your “Super Bowl” and yet you don’t put your best foot forward? Plus, your buildup is weak and your card is weighing in on an old rivalry renewed, a Once in a Lifetime match a second time, and The Streak against its next victim (with the added tragedy to become the only viable storyline going into the event)… What would one expect?

  • raven

hmm everyone knew that hhh would win. cena would beat rock in a rematch of a terrible match that was even worse and the build was terrible as well.
no cesaro. no divas. a thrown together no build no sense tag match with your now whc.
the shield who has zero purpose taking on three guys nobody cares about.
    fandango going over Jericho.
how could they expect people to care about mania??
as I said before, they thought rock/cena was huge money but from the first time rock challenged cena we all knew it would lead to cena winning the title and therefore bringing the entire product down and putting us back into the super cena rise above all odds beat 5people at once rewind shit we have seen for 10years. wwe could have had ANYONE go against rock and draw money. putting cena in there again, imo, hurt them more than it helped them. spread the two out and make big money and good money on two matches rather than ok money on one match.
thank god for CM Punk cause without him the wwe is just flat out boring.

    • ddp

lol as if having cesaro and divas matches wd increase buyrate.

  • Reality

Great special effects, big stars and tons of fireworks is not equal to a good show. Hope the official buyrates are really bad so that they can learn what a good show is supposed to be.
It’s like they’re taking it for granted now, that Mania, because of how much money to put in the superficial stuff, will always do good. So they won’t even bother giving us a good wrestling show. No matter what the tards say, mixed with soap opera or not, it’s still about wrestling.

    • 2muchfire

I got a great idea , you know what everyone wants to see… You should write the show, you clearly speak for everyone and you KNOW it’s all about wrestling and has nothing to do with showmanship/soap opera. I know you’d put together a great show… Yoshi vs Tyson kidd in loser leaves superstar match, Daniel Bryan vs Ceasro for World Heavyweight championship … Oh oh… Even better, Kofi vs Dolph for the WWE championship. I can see those buy rates now…

      • Reality

fuck off you dipshit, I ain’t even reading you anymore, so just fuck off my posts

        • 2muchfire

No no no, you came at me first, always commenting on my post and insulting me… Evidently you wanted my attention, now you got. ” I ain’t even reading you anymore” thanks for the preview of your writing skills we await your road to wrestlemaina booking. P.S. Dipshit is what I call you.

      • JohnnyC

That’s bullshit logic. Writers are suppose to put interesting storylines on the table and what do we get?

  • Forceton Banfodder

I had no desire to buy Wrestlemania this year. The only two matches I wanted to watch were Henry/Ryback and Undertaker/Punk.

    I knew Undertaker would win.

I knew that Ryback and Henry’s match wouldn’t lead to anything.

I knew that win or lose, Triple H came out of retirement to be in a win or retire match with Lesnar. So nothing was at stake.

I knew that the last Triple H/Lesnar fight sucked and didn’t want to see a second one.

And I had no interest in seeing Cena win an unprecedented (and undeserving) 11th WWE title win.

I got more out of watching RAW the next night and seeing Dolph finally cash in.

  • Frank

OH HELL NO TEDDY LONG AS A HEEL GM!? NO WE NEED THE HOLLA HOLLA HOLLA PLAYERS! GM

  • http://www.facebook.com/dan.kincaid.7 Dan Kincaid

Only a couple weeks of build if any for the storylines and matches (I was presonally only interested in seeing Punk Taker and Fandango Jericho) and a raised price. Not surprising.

  • http://www.facebook.com/stephen.wadelin Stephen Wadelin

You mean a show they barely promoted and barely built because they thought star power was enough to sell it is doing bad? – Well duh.

    Vince you’re a Wrestling PROMOTER – Y’know… promote… and… yea… ffs…

  • sdelfin

It wouldn’t shock me. I’ll patiently await the final numbers. I’ve seen a lot of great comments about this already. The Rock is a draw for sure. But he can’t be the only big draw forever. If the product as a whole isn’t compelling, the Rock can’t save it. And it’s getting much easier to see him, having wrestled three times this year and with him having several movies being out this year. I’ve said it before, that WWE needed to give the viewers that Rock brought to the product a reason to keep tuning in. I don’t think they’ve done that.

    • TheKillingMoon

The only thing the people’s ass draws is flies to rubbish such as himself. By flies I mean majority of his brain dead fans.

  • http://twitter.com/mrzeegrr Eric Zeigher

“Mania” was crap this year. I hope they fire the “Part-timers” and let Wrestlers do their jobs.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Randy-James-Crawford/100001407556559 Randy James Crawford

If you think they will do that you are an idiot, Undertaker is staying until he decides to give it up which is when the streak ends or his contract ends, Triple H is part boss so he will stay, Brock Lesnar is a big draw.

      • Forceton Banfodder

Brock is only a draw if you put him in a match people want to see. No one wanted to see Brock and Triple H again.

  • http://www.twitter.com/jonesy27 Xpac’s Choclate Starfish

I watched it on a stream this year, Next year it will have to be something amazing to make me buy it!

  • liljimmy

I am surprised that every fan here is talking about the build up wasn’t good as if they were gona buy the ppv. The only reason its not looking good because of the price increase to 70 dollars not because a few fans on the net didn’t like the build up.

  • ivan

gooba that was 2009, cm punk has improved to the top of the cards, there are always gonna be rematches between wrestlers so technically it wasn’t a wm rematch, 4 years is a long time between drinks mate

  • ScottyHotty

What do you expect? My friend and I were going to split the cost at his house but it was over $80 with taxes and fees.. That was $40 a person.. Again for a couple rematches and watered down pg wrestling. No thank you!!!!!!!! Let the 8 year old kids pay the $80

  • lou

the build up to all of the main events sucked. what did they expect. They had jack swagger wrestling for the world title. rock/cena 2..zzzz.. ryback vs henry..zzzzzz..ziggler going for the tag titles..stupid..hmmm cant imagine why the buyrate was low.

  • 3Tears

Good, the lower the buyrate the better. Maybe next time they will build the matches up in advance for wrestlemania.

  • Derringer Duo

Well, that’s what happens when three of your main events are something no one wants to see and the Undercard was just crap that was thrown together. You thought The Rock was some magical cure-all for unwanted rematches and shoddy booking.

  • Scott Kinnard

What do they expect? They keep raising the price. What is it now- 60 bucks? I watched it at a little sports bar BW3 type place. No way would I have paid 60 bucks to watch it. That shows people didn’t care about the main event. Only match I actually liked was the Taker/Punk match. I shudder to think how bad it would have been had Taker not been able to wrestle. They really need to put the MITB match back on the Wrestlemania card.

  • ddp

I’m predicting a 35-40% drop from last yeat. 800-850k range for repeatamania. Just imagine if the part timers like rock, hhh, taker, brock and y2j were not on the show, it wd hv bombed with less than 500k buys

  • Big Johnny

Heel Teddy Long? Is he gonna make tag team matches into Fatal-Four-Ways and make the Undertaker face mid-carders? Sign me up.

  • Stranger

This is obviously nothing more than speculation, but I hope it’s true. They deserve this as a wake up call. Just because you put “big names” together in a match does not mean it’s okay to be so lazy with the rest of the card and throw matches together at the last minute.

And from what I recall, a lot more fans were underwhelmed by a Rock/Cena rematch than there were excited for it. The same goes for Brock/Triple H. Most people in general found their first match disappointing, and the crowd reactions to their promos leading up to the Wrestlemania match were abysmal. WWE always does a poor job at building up their PPV’s, but you’d think they were aware of it, to the point where they’d at least put in that missing effort for the biggest show of the year.

  • http://twitter.com/hellson916 Nelson Carvalho

lets see if wwe learns how to correct their mistakes for the next WM.

  • riyadviper

    Worst Mania everrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

  • Kjhaltz

Let’s see rehash of last year’s Wrestlemania, re-match, predictable out come for the main event, and not to mention it is sort of expensive and the priced was raised.

again they got what they deserve they should learn from this & start building real stories from Now on for next year wm30…. wm 29 predictable matches, main event no one wanna see, what you expect

  • http://www.facebook.com/DoubleFGeneralMr5stars Skimask Saxton

I bet if if punk broke the Streak brock ended h and cena lost and turned heel..people wouldve been happy with this mania.

  • http://www.facebook.com/JPW83 Jpro Walkom

i’m sick of these 1 month buildups. I was kind of disappointed with Wrestlemania this year too. It’s kind of sad when there’s only one match that stands out and one of those people only works on and off. Of course i’m talking about Punk vs Undertaker.

I mean most of the matches weren’t even given 10 minutes and yet somehow they had no time for Cody and Sandow who put in a lot of work in the past year. And yet somehow P Diddy gets a spot on the show and they didn’t.

I really loved the buildups that took their time. Remember Jericho vs HBK buildup. That was great it told a story. It was a 4 month thing. We see one of the best Rumble moments ever. Unfortunately it was at HBK’s expense but it was priceless seeing Christian and Jericho fool HBK.

Even Rock vs Austin matches had some great buildups.

They really put more care into the event back in the day. Now it just seems like oh Wrestlemania’s one month away we better start making stuff happen. I know let’s go from a hot feud like Jericho vs Dolph Ziggler to Dolph Ziggler and Big E vs Kane and Daniel Bryan. What about Jericho? Oh we’ll just throw him in some Fandango match, we can build that up in two weeks.

  • Steven Robert Gill

What did they expect? It was built around two main events where’s both guys were getting rematches that they didn’t deserve.

I imagine if they’d actually thrown a twist or two in there (no, turning Randy Orton heel doesn’t count as a twist) people would’ve checked the results online the next morning and actually ordered the PPV. As it was, people weren’t willing to pay 70 dollars to watch The Rock job to Cena then ‘hug it out’ with him (we all suspected that’s what was going to happen) so I bet a fair few waited for the results online, *then* made the decision.
