ECW Shutting Down, WWE NXT (Next Generation) To Debut

Published On February 3, 2010 | By | WWE News

It’s official – the ECW brand is shutting down for good in 3 weeks. The final ECW broadcast will air on Tuesday, 2/23.

Vince McMahon appeared on this week’s ECW on SyFy broadcast to make the announcement, thanking the superstars and crew who made ECW the success it once was.

McMahon promised a “new, innovative, never before seen program broadcast” that will debut on 3/2 and take over the old ECW timeslot.

There are reports that the new brand will be dubbed WWE Next Generation (“NXT”) and will feature almost exclusively young talent from WWE’s developmental system.

More on the end of ECW and the start of WWE NXT later this week.

Sounds cool but if its gonna be developmental what’ll happen to the current guys? Moving them up to RAW and SD?

    lame!

so this is the end of it all. talk about going out with a whimper

  • joelm

its a shame. well at least there being open about it all & almost claiming responsibility for f**king it up.
hopefully christian benefits and gets given an oportunity on the bigger shows.
will be interesting to see what the new shows roster will be.
they would almost be better to bring fcw in replace of it as most of the wwe developmental wrestlers come from there….

I think this is a cool idea, ECW has run it’s course, it’s time to get rid of it and let it’s older superstars like Regal, Christian and Goldust get out of there, especially Christian.

  • Dlowhizite

Thank you. This wasn’t ECW since the day it started airing. Proper name for a proper show.

Also, I think it was quite telling when Tommy Dreamer retired (with time on his contract). He heart was not in it because Tommy was faithful (and some may say overly faithful) to the original ECW. Vince was able to cash in on it with two of WWE’s better PPVS in the decade.. Vince could have continued to make big money if it were done properly, but the envelope pushing days are over for Vinnie Mac…

But again, thanks for letting it finally go.

i thought that was what “Superstars” was for?

ECW has run its course and it is about time to move. I am hoping for Christian in particular to move on to bigger and better things….hopefulyl moved to Smackdown! Because we all know he would be lost in the shuffle in RAW. WWE NXT could represent what WWE tried to do with ECW with the introduction and showcase of new talent. What will happen to the ECW Title? Will it be retired? Will there be a new NXT belt?

  • MadMike

@ FR33STYL3DUN3R – I thought the same thing about the Superstars show.

  • HellRaiser

finally damm ecw has been death voor years en now the gonna do something about it

Superstars is the new Heat ,Velocity, or Shotgun. NXT is another term for FCW, or OVW plus.

Well, I for one am glad ECW is finally closing it’s doors. Vinnie Mac has made a mockery out of it since he put it back on the air. wtf is an Extreme Rules match? Last time I checked that was a good ol’ fashioned Hardcore match. And Christian, while he has been an excellent champion and IMO defines the heart of the original ECW, should be moving on to bigger and better things. Maybe a feud with Edge, even though it looks like he’s going to be going after Sheamus now.

As for this NXT thing coming, all I can say is…why? That is what Superstars is for. It’s to help develop the stars of tomorrow by showcasing them there, along with some of the big names. Hell, I remember Cena being on there a couple weeks ago if memory serves. This new show is doomed to fail just like what eventually happened with WWECW.

ECW has been dead since it the first One Night Stand PPV. They should’ve never made a show like they did, and it being canceled is the best thing they could do for the name, which is already kinda of ruined

whats the nxt belt going to look like
