JBL Comments On Chris Jericho’s Flag Controversy

Former WWE superstar John Bradshaw Layfield has posted a reaction on his Facebook page regarding the incident that occured involving Chris Jericho at Thursday night’s WWE live event from Brazil. As previously reported, Jericho was nearly arrested after denigrating the Brazilian flag during his main event match against CM Punk.

VIDEO of Chris Jericho’s Incident In Brazil

JBL, who had his own international incident several years ago for “goose stepping” at a live event from Germany, had this to say about Jericho’s incident:

“After seeing reports of Chris Jericho in Brazil-it was what I suspected–Chris trying to entertain and be a heel. Apparently a Brazilian Flag comes into ring and Chris grabs it and kicks it (or something to that effect). Compare that to Sgt Slaughter burning the flag or all the crazy stuff that has gone on. This is nothing. EXCEPT we are in a new era and now that isn’t acceptable.

Chris did what most old heels would have done, he reacted and a decade ago it would have been loved for the heat. However, times change and we have to as well-Chris acknowledged this and apologized. Chris is a wonderful person and one of all time great entertainers-there was no malice here from what I see and know about Chris. A mistake was made and is being dealt with.

As far as being illegal, please, if done in an entertaining arena it is considered as such. Like saying you can prosecute Anthony Hopkins for cannibalism because of his role in ‘Silence of the Lambs’. I understand the arguements, I went through same thing in Germany and it was never considered a problem in Germany-only over the Internet and the Internet reporters. Chris’ intent was to entertain not insult anyone in Brazil or the great Brazilian fans.

Times change and for the better. Chris did what a ton of older heels would have done and he reacted. He is being punished and he apologized. He is one of all time greats and a great friend, old habits are hard to change but we must.

Times change and we have to change with it, and we all will.”

Man wish JBL was still in the WWE…..he was a great heel himself.

  • pwnez

Exactly, this is a new era and what you could get away with before you can’t today. No one is blaming Jericho since he was just acting as a heel character but can you blame Brazil for getting upset?…no.

He shouldn’t have been arrested for it though, that would have been going too far. A simple apology and maybe a fine at best. It’s clear the WWE had no choice but to suspend Jericho. Their would have been bigger problems if they would have let him go without consequence.

I’m sure they didn’t want to suspend him, but I guess they felt not suspending him would have made WWE look bad.

I say screw Political correctnesss. Especially in dumb crap like this

i cant belive this is ilegal…..

It’s Brazil, not America. We take our freedom of speech for granted.

    The Wrestling God has spoken…

I believe that he will be suspended for just a little while. Creative team already doesn’t know what to do. Keeping Jericho away for a long time will just make things harder.

  • Scott Kinnard

So let me get this straight. It’s okay for HHH to hump a maniquen pretending it’s Kane’s dead girlfriend yet Jericho is indefinitely suspended for this. Hey Vince. Jericho is very well off. The WWE needs Jericho MUCH more than Jericho needs the WWE.

half tempted to buy a brazilian flag and burn it based on principal. get over it. as i said, this isn’t the worst thing done to a flag in a wwe ring. and we all will NOT change with the times. i refuse to conform to this weak society where it’s all about image and caring about other people’s feelings. i have feelings that are being suppressed because it’s gonna make someone else upset? no way! i’mma let it all out.

I agree with JBL but for the record on the Sgt Slaughter incident, Vince wanted him to burn the US flag but Slaughter refused. The compromise was that Slaughter burned a “Hulk Rules” T-Shirt. Either way it’s wrestling which is meant to be entertainment so get the sticks outta your asses Brazil and WWE!

Actually, Slaughter did attempt to burn the american flag. However, there was too much flame retardant and it looked completely ridiculous when he tried. He didn’t even burn a quarter of it.
