Jim Ross Blog: Will WWE Drop PG Rating?, Lesnar/Punk Prediction, SmackDown

jim-ross

WWE Hall Of Famer updated the section of his website on Sunday afternoon. Below are some highlights from his latest entry:

On Friday’s edition of : “Thought Friday night was a really solid wrestling show highlighted by Punk vs. Fandango in what I thought was Fandango’s best outing and the Triple Threat match featuring Orton, Christian and RVD. I’m a much bigger fan of a wrestler earning a title opportunity than being granted, willed, decreed, etc a championship match. Yeah, I’m old school. Alex Riley did a really nice job in filling in for the mountain climbing JBL Friday night. Alex has done some commentary down in NXt and I’ve enjoyed working with him there. Riley is a bright young man who has a viable future in WWE and is the son of talentd broacdater Kevin Kiley.”

On ’s matches: “Does @CMPunk EVER have a bad match? I don’t recall one.”

On if WWE will ever drop the PG rating and go back to TV-14: “You asked…I do not feel that WWE will or do they need to go back to TV14 ratings for their broadcasts. There are lots of reasons but one is simple….advertisers do not covet spending big money on prime time, TV14 rated shows as much as they do PG programming. Plus, the talent, and not the TV rating, made the Attitude Era so successful. Cursing, foul language, edgy gestures, ect did not draw ratings and set WWE on fire but instead it was the talents who brought intensity and created a competitive nature in the locker room where several Type A personalities ‘needed’ to be the top star.”

On his pick for the vs. CM Punk match: “You asked…Punk vs. Brock prediction at Summer Slam….I love this match and will be in LA to see it live and I think that Lesnar wins thanks to a little diversion from Happy Heyman aka @HeymanHustle. I do feel that this will be a compellingly physical contest between two alpha males who don’t’ enjoy not having the top billing. This match will be challenging to follow. The key to Punk winning, however, may be is feet. More on that soon.”

WWE will drop PG when sheep learn to fly and the Rapture comes, people. Let it go.

    • pwnez

The fans will never let it go. The funny thing is, if WWE ever did bring back the TV-14 rating fans would still find something to complain and whine about. The AE is dead and is never going to come back.

      • http://www.youtube.com/ac1dchr15t ac1d

I get a very ‘good’ nostalgic feel of the AE when Erick Rowan and Luke Harper with his dirty shirt are in the ring together, and of course Bray tops the cake.

      • B-How

Honestly, it doesn’t have to be another TV-14, Attitude Era type of deal. Just a little more edgy product and being a TV-14 show would be cool. Like they did from 2002 til 2006 or 2007 with the Ruthless Aggression Era. That would be cool, cause lets face it. The AE is never going to happen again unless something drastic happens to the WWE. And we all know that won’t happen because it’s too big of a power house now. I just think a TV-14 rating and a bit more of an edge to everything would be cool. Like when Cena first debuted. That gimmick was awesome. I hate bringing Super Cena into this but it was the first person I thought of. But yeah a TV-14 rating with a bit of an edge would be pretty sweet to see.

Part of the reason why WWE prolly won’t change back is because they know they don’t have to. Part of that reason is the “smart” fan. WWE knows they never have to cater to that fan because in reality WWE has already beat them. WWE knows that no matter what they do that “smart” fan will still watch. Its just like on the independent level. If I’m working a show and you buy 8×10’s and then tear them up and rub it in my face….guess what. I don’t care if you tear it up because I still got your money in my pocket after the show. I see 75% of the people on here harping about WWE needing to change creative. I’m sorry but WWE won’t change…because they don’t have to because you are still watching it. You are still going to the live events. That was how the Attitude Era came about….because WWE was constantly losing money and viewers to WCW.

Well like I said, they don’t have to because they are already a super power. So there is no need. But it would be pretty awesome if they did things with more of an edge, and not this mainstream bull crap haha. Although I will admit… the past couple weeks, RAW has been better. But honestly, I think that is because of RVD, Daniel Bryan, and the Wyatt family.. let the hate begin lmao

          • Thomas Wing

I agree with you there. I’m a fan of all 5 of them.

          • B-How

Exactly, and those 5 have really kept things interesting. Also with Vince being on the program a bit more has helped also. Even if the fued with him and Triple H is corny right now. It heated up last night when HHH flipped to Stephanie. So we’ll see how things go in the upcoming weeks.

          • Thomas Wing

After watching it last night….but did the interaction between Bryan and McMahon seem awfully similiar to McMahon & Austin?

          • B-How

A little bit, because McMahon was basically scolding Bryan and McMahon’s hair is grown back out again lmao. So I can see a little bit of resemblence. Although, DB is no Stone Cold lol.

          • Thomas Wing

            Very true there lol

Whenever the WWE has tried to push the envelope, people pointed the finger and said they crossed the line. When Jerry Lawler’s mother passed leading to WrestleMania or when CM Punk rubbed “ashes” over his chest.

      • Andrew Campbell

WWE’s issues run a lot deeper than it’s PG rating. And to be fair, WWE does give it’s fans an awful lot of things to complain about as it’s been in such a bad state for so many years now. But atleast we’ve been getting a few decent shows here and there I suppose.

  • KingofKings

Hey Jim Ross why are you so annoying?

  • pwnez

I wonder if someone told J.R. to stop being a douche because he’s been acting pretty nice lately. Anways, I agree with what he said about the TV-14 rating. It’s overrated IMO and wouldn’t help the current product as much as we think it would.

    • Pozessed

Agreed. I don’t really find the rating change that bad since I remember Smackdown being pretty much PG but the show was pure epic, plus the last few Raws have been pretty good.

      • Stew-ED!

Yes exactly. Smackdown was always PG and in the Attitude Era they didn’t involve The Muppets or other nonsense like that. I honestly think that WWE are sometimes G-Rated with certain segments.

  • Stew-ED!

The rating isn’t the problem. Smackdown was always PG even during the Attitude Era. And Smackdown was great then, but not now. WWE is lacking in quality storylines and frequent feuds. The rating doesn’t matter.

  • Assailant

“Cursing, foul language, edgy gestures, ect did not draw ratings and set WWE on fire but instead it was the talents who brought intensity and created a competitive nature in the locker room where several Type A personalities ‘needed’ to be the top star.” That is what is missing now in the WWE!

  • brad

I have to disagree with j.r. On this I do believe that the talent was a big part of it, but not just that I think you also have to take in consideration the edgy did help make it cool as well as we’ll written stories.

  • Andrew Campbell

Smackdown, from top to bottom, was a great show. The triple threat between RVD, Orton and Christian was a killer match.

  • Progressed_Now

and once again noone gives a fuuck what JR thinks. fuuck PG while you’re at it.
