Larry Sweeney Dead At 29

Published On April 11, 2011 | By | Other News, Wrestling News

Pro wrestling manager Alex Whybrow, who performed as Larry Sweeney for Ring of Honor and numerous American independent promotions, has died at the age of 29.

F4WOnline.com reports that he committed suicide either late last night or this morning. It is believed that he hung himself.

Whybrow suffered from bipolar disorder and had a breakdown in 2009, which he described as “the absolute worst event” of his life. He went through a long recovery process the following year.

He made sporadic appearances on the independent scene after parting ways with ROH in 2009.

Independent wrestler Chris Hero, a friend of Whybrow, commented on his passing on Twitter.

“We lost a dedicated friend and an overwhelmingly talented performer this morning,” he wrote. “Alex Whybrow aka ‘Sweet & Sour’ Larry Sweeney has passed.

“We spent a few yrs together on the road & Alex was gifted beyond measure. He could enthrall you with colorful stories from his personal life or he could captivate thousands with his undeniable charisma. I loved him & my heart is with his family, friends & his countless fans. First he was my student & he transcended that almost immediately. I will forever cherish our in depth conversations & time spent together. Love you man. Miss you. Rest in Peace.”

    Loved watching him in ROH years ago. Great manager that could have gone really far in the business. My thoughts go out to him and his family.

    R.I.P Larry Sweeney.

  • JohnyH

    Christ almighty. Poor bastard. This is such a shock, I knew Sweeney had personal problems but I had no idea how this would turn out. Dead at 29.
    R.I.P Larry Sweeney.

    we are losing too many wrestlers and talents at too young of an age. Somebody needs answer the question of why and what can we do about it. What is it about wrestling that drives people to suicide and drugs and alcohol, this has been going on since the 80′s and it’s only getting worse. i love wrestling but it is fake, so why do we take it so serious? Im just saying.

    R.I.P Larry Sweeney

    @glamazon27330 What an idiotic thing to say. People are going to die regardless. Nobody ‘needs to answer’ anything. Vince and the WWE have done a god job with their drug policy and rehab offers. TNA is to be held in shame, but you cannot hold Dixie, Vince or anybody responsible for the death count in pro wrestling. People are choosing to do drugs and drink. Look at Jerry Lawler, C.M. Punk, Daniel Bryan, these guys never did any drugs, drank or did anything like that and they’ve accomplished a lot in pro wrestling, so lets not have this whole ‘pressure’ crap. People can be weak. People die in general, and not enough of them get help, like Larry. That’s the tragedy here. And your last comment is just stupid and irrelevant to the topic at hand.

  • glamazon27330

    no your stupid and irrelevant and blind as hell if don’t see an obvious pattern here, im not blaming anybody what im saying if you would have paid attention is it’s sad that paople are weak and when things don’t go their way they turn to poisions that kill, i can say what i want this is strickly an opinion, if you don’t like my comments, fine, but don’t try to belittle me becasue i see something you don’t @johnyh

  • JohnyH

    @glamazon27330 Everybody sees it Einstein. You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to notice a lot of pro wrestlers die young. Doesn’t make you special. It’s clear you’re trying to blame the evil wrestling business, otherwise who else were you talking about when you said “Somebody needs answer the question of why and what can we do about it.”? God? President Obama? Charlie Sheen? Freddy Mercury? Help me out here. You want the powers that be, i.e Vinny Mac and his team of demons to step in like Jesus healing a leper and yell “Be Clean!” to all the drug addicts and drunkards in wrestling. Sweeney was bipolar, so we don’t know if drugs or alcohol led to his demise. It’s premature to assume this is just another typical wrestler death. And yes, your last comment was stupid and irrelevant. “i love wrestling but it is fake, so why do we take it so serious?” What had that got to do with Sweeney’s death, might I ask?

  • HHKTAKER40103

    ok my condolences go out to his family even though i have no idea who he was i dont even know how to watch ROH but he did the same thing as benoit did or reportedly did alteast and everyone is ok with it i mean it is sad that he died and at such a young age but he did the same thing but i guess the difference is that he had a disorder im not trying to be mean im just trying to understand

  • glamazon27330

    Wow!!! i now understand completely why wrestling fans are called “MARKS”.

  • JohnyH

    @glamazon27330 Nice way out of an actual reply. Off you go Bruno.

  • JohnyH

    @HHKTAKER40103 Ummm… Benoit murdered two people… Larry didn’t…

  • HHKTAKER40103

    @JohnyH Oh yeah i fell dumb now

  • HHKTAKER40103

    @JohnyH *feel

  • mylifewwe

    R.I.P Larry Sweeney. Too young to leave Earth.

  • HBK4life

    Glamazon Jhonney F is 100% right this time. Your in over your head if those are the types of comments you are going to make. Fans that call other fans marks or have to ask why we take it seriously dont belong on the same message board as me.

    Larry Sweeney was a great manager in the style of Bobby Heenan. It’s sad to loose him, and at a young age. Bi polar is a tough disorder to have, My brother suffers from it and its a daily struggle for him. There are times where its so bad he doesn’t even leave the house…… @glamazon27330 you’re a stooge

  • guns

    Let me join the “@glamazon27330 is a dumbass” chorus. See, wrestling actually comes in third in early death department. First is the music business, closely followed by Hollywood. The wrestling industry is a VERY distant third. The “there’s something wrong with wrestling” theory just doesn’t fly.

    R.I.P. Larry Sweeney
    The wrestlers are dying to young these days :( my condolences to his family

    @glamazon27330 shut up jackass

  • somewrestlingfansareidiots

    It’s a shame that some people failed at posting a simple condolence. All that needed to be said was R.I.P Larry Sweeney……save the wrestling and death related studies out of this, stop being chumps. Especially Glamazon, you’re comments were so completely un-necessary, as a wrestling fan i’m embarresed for you. If you feel the need to be clever in the future, write your comment on a peice of paper first, if it sounds stupid, write it again, if it still sounds stupid. Log off the computer and don’t come back. Already enough chumps in the IWC.
