MAILBAG: Is Rock vs. Cena The Biggest Match In History?

SEScoops Mailbag for March 15th

Q: Has any special guest referee ever called a pinfall for themselves? HBK said he knew who would win [in the Triple H vs. Undertaker HIAC match], therefore everyone will speculate [on who the] superstar is he will screw. But I was thinking maybe after HHH delivers a Tombstone to Undertaker, Michaels would swoop in and give a thunderous Sweet Chin Music and pin either or both of them, making himself [the winner and] thus ending the streak. What do you think? Is this even possible? – Shin K.

A: Not only has it happened before, but it was in a match that also involved The Undertaker! The dead man fought his brother Kane for the then-vacant WWF Title at the Judgment Day 1998 pay-per-view with “Stone Cold” Steve Austin serving as the guest referee. Undertaker knocked out Kane with a chairshot and when Austin refused to count the fall, Taker complained and ate a Stunner for his troubles. Austin then counted both men’s shoulders to the mat and declared himself the winner, even though the match was called a no contest.

Q: What do you think John Cena will do after WrestleMania? Who do u think he will feud with and when do u think he will get back into the title picture? – mGt

A: House show plans tentatively have Cena and Mark Henry working together, though that may not be until several weeks after Mania. If not, I could see them putting Cena and Miz back together, though I would strongly prefer they not do that. As for when Cena gets back in the title hunt, probably not for several months.

Q: Daniel Bryan and Sheamus had a feud last year for the US championship and were supposed to have a match at WrestleMania 27, but it was bumped from the card because of time restraints. Did WWE even mention this in their promos or anywhere, or do they just think the fans will forget everything like always? – Dave

A: I don’t recall it being mentioned on Raw or Smackdown, but maybe I missed it. I would mention it just to illustrate how far these guys have come in a year, but I wouldn’t belabor the point because, realistically, how many casual fans even realize those two guys got bumped off the card and had a dark match last year?

Q: Do you think WWE’s future in, say, the next 5-10 years is in dire trouble due to them lacking star power already, and not pushing younger talents as often as they should? – Victor

A: The same thing was said about 5-10 years ago about WWE and they’re no closer to going out of business now than they were back then. If anything, they’re stronger because they have so many additional sources of revenue that can sustain them when business is down. That said, it’s not a pretty picture even now. They haven’t created enough new stars to rival the ones that are retiring and it’s going to get worse with them having only one developmental system in Florida. They have a talented core of talent down there right now with Rollins, Ambrose, Ohno and Cesaro, but it’s not enough.

I’m not sure if it’s definitely the biggest match in history but it could be one of the biggest and and most hyped up feuds of all time. Hogan/Rock and Austin/Rock are other candidates.

Biggest Match of All-Time is either:

Stone Cold vs The Rock – WrestleMania 17

The Rock vs Hulk Hogan – WrestleMania 18

lol, Walking Dead reference.  Sweet, that show is one of the few shows actually worth watching on tv now days and that’s the truth.

Anyhow, interesting mailbag this week.  Course it does make me wonder, which match would draw more money.  Rock & Cena or Punk & Austin?  I’m sorta leaning towards Rock & Cena given their both mega-superstars headlining Maina this year, while Punk is just now starting to become somewhat of a household name, if even that.  What you guys and solomonster think?

  • Rockport619

For any of you wondering…..A 1.0 buyrates translates to roughly 400,000 buys.

Biggest match of all time is always the main event match for the next upcoming PPV!

  • Bushwald Sexyface

No, I honestly felt that Rock/Hogan was bigger for wrestling as a whole.

  • Tiran66

Just like Solomonster said it’s all subjective.  IMO the biggest match of all time would have been Hart/Michaels after the screwjob, if there had been any chance to make it happen.  And I mean while they were both still in their prime.

    • Bushwald Sexyface

Ok, but there are always “what ifs”. Based on matches that have actually happened or will be happening April 1, which one would you choose to have been/be the biggest?

      • Tiran66

It’s so hard to choose though.  If your going on strictly big money match then you’d have to go Hogan/Rock, Austin/Rock, or Flair/Race.  If you base it on hype then I’d go with Flair/Hogan, but they screwed the pooch on that by giving it away on live TV.  Hogan/Warrior and Hogan/Andre were also big hype matches that didn’t really deliver.  And if your going to just talk about a match that had a great build and the match delivered I’d go with Savage/Steamboat, Michaels/Hart(Iron Man), Michaels/Taker(first match), Austin/Bret, or Owen/Bret(Wrestlemania).

“They have a talented core of talent down there right now with Rollins, Ambrose, Ohno and Cesaro, but it’s not enough.”

You forgot Xavier Woods, Bo Rotundo, Husky Harris, Leo Kruger, and Richie Steamboat off the top of my head.

  • Bushwald Sexyface

Just to elaborate a bit more on my previous comment about Rock/Hogan feeling bigger as a whole, I guess that’s more subjective than anything else. It was the biggest match that took place towards the end of the Attitude Era so, in that sense, it was that era’s biggest match. I think a match like Hogan/Andre or Flair/Sting could have been the previous era’s biggest match. And Rock/Cena will be this generation’s biggest match.

I will say this. If by some miracle Shawn Michaels and Rock were to have a match @ WM or a bigger PPV, I think that would be bigger than Rock/Cena. Also, if Austin/Punk were to have a match, it wouldn’t be AS big but would be close. I’m sure there are others who feel the opposite of that.

I think it could’ve been better if it had a stipulation on it, maybe no dq falls count anywhere or something, but its either Rock vs Cena or HHH vs Taker HIAC for me; but then again, Taker-HHH had a stipulation and wouldn’t of been AS good if it was a normal match like Cena-Rock

  • lil jimmy

the problem was hogan didnt want to job to austin just like austin didnt want to job to brock.

  • Unknownplanet

There’s a difference between Austin not wanting to job to Brock and Hogan not wanting to job to Austin.  When they told Austin they wanted him to job to Brock, they wanted him to do it first night of the King of the Ring.  Austin said he wouldn’t have minded jobbing to him if they had let it become a build-up thing, but they just wanted Austin to take the fall without any kind of build. He got mad because he felt like they were making him out to be a joke.  Whereas Hogan is just full of himself and wouldn’t job to Jesus Christ.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/Caveman1006?feature=mhee Marvin B.

lol @ jobbing to Jesus joke.

  • Tiran66

Exactly.  Also Austin saw the writing on the wall.  He and Vince both knew his best wrestling days were behind him and he saw the book to get squashed by Lesner as the beginning of the end.  Austin was there when Vince screwed Bret, and they were friends.  Austin knew Vince would do the same to him if he felt he had to.  I don’t agree with Austin walking, but I have to admire the guy for sticking to what he believes in and bowing out before Vince could bury him.
