MAILBAG: Who Was REALLY Responsible For The Death Of WCW?

Published On November 18, 2011 | By | Mailbag

SEScoops Mailbag for November 18th

(please submit YOUR questions to [email protected])

Q: I’ve been curious over the last couple months, what does CM Punk yell out every time he comes [to the ring]? – Elvir Bajric

A: It’s clobberin’ time! He borrowed that battle cry from The Thing, a comic book character from The Fantastic Four.

Q: Was the fight between Mr. McMahon and Bret Hart (where Bret came out and started shouting about HBK being the referee at Summerslam) on Raw in 1997 real? I’ve heard different stories from different sources. Based on the video, it looks fairly real because the usual forearm shots weren’t there and Owen Hart seemed to be getting really wound up about the whole thing. – Ben

A: The whole thing was a work. I’d love to know these “sources” you’ve heard otherwise from. Kevin Nash wasn’t involved, so of course there were no forearm shots.

Q: In [the 11/4 mailbag], someone asked what the most devastating finishing move would be. I’d like to rephrase the question and ask what would you consider the most dangerous finishing move that if done wrong could cause serious injury or death. – Andrew from Michigan

A: Any move executed incorrectly can result in injury or death. There’s no right or wrong answer to this question. Breaking your neck would probably be the quickest way, so I’d be careful with powerbombs, piledrivers and wacky flips.

Q: Is it just me or has Mason Ryan been using some moves that Batista used to implement in the ring? – AJ Saldivar

A: THAT’s the first comparison that hits you when you see Ryan and Batista? Are you serious, bro?

Q: Who do you blame for the death of WCW? I know many names come to mind, but I’m wondering if you agree with me that Kevin Nash, Eric Bischoff and Vince Russo are specifically the ones that immediately come to mind. In his book, Bischoff blamed everyone but himself, mainly the suits at AOL who continually “undermined his decisions.” Nash was responsible for idiotic company killing blunders like putting himself over Goldberg and the infamous “Fingerpoke of Doom.” Russo was responsible for genius ideas like bringing in Master P and David Arquette. Many people blame Hogan, but I don’t think that’s a valid argument because it’s been revealed that Hulk was actually the one who took a chance by going heel and suggested being the “third guy” which essentially electrified the concept of the NWO, and I think Hulk actually proved he was a team player by putting Goldberg over clean. You can’t blame Hogan for promoting himself, but in the end, he did what was best for WCW. Do you agree with my argument, and if not why? – Travis

A: Make no mistake, Hogan always put Hogan first and did what was best for himself. If WCW happened to benefit from some of those decisions, like the heel turn, then so be it. He had to be convinced to do the turn and only did it because he was already being booed by a majority of the fans who had tired of his “Real American” shtick. It wasn’t like the Steve Austin heel turn at WM17, which was a calculated risk on Austin’s part to freshen up his character at a time when the fans clearly didn’t want him to turn and it backfired. As for putting over Goldberg, yes, it was the right move for business, but he did so with the caveat that he be the first person to end the streak and get the title back. He did get the title back, though Nash booked himself to be the first to beat big Bill. Hogan is every bit as responsible as Bischoff and Russo and the rest of them for killing that company. But to answer your question, the person responsible for killing WCW (and creating a WWE monopoly) was none of those four, but rather a Turner Broadcasting executive named Jamie Kellner. Kellner is the man who declared that wrestling would no longer air on TBS or TNT, at which point the deal Eric Bischoff had hoped to swing to buy the company was killed.

Q: Where’s Drew McIntyre? It’s as if one day he’s Intercontinental champion & Vince McMahon’s Chosen One and now he’s a jobber. What happened??? – Arthur Lewis

A: Tiffany happened. Don’t ever get married. Ever.

Q: I have been watching a lot of old school wrestling, but one thing has always bugged me. What’s wrong with Brother Love’s face? – Kieran

A: Not enough fiber in his diet. He’s straining too much. We’ve all been there.

Q: Can you name any superstar that’s been heel [for their entire] career and one that’s been babyface for theirs?

A: Ricky Steamboat has been a babyface his entire career and John Cena has been a heel for his. :)

I’m so sick of hearing people say “Hogan put himself first” like it’s a bad thing. Why the fuck WOULDN’T you put yourself first? It’s a business, a job. Quit acting like he’s some evil mastermind because he pushed himself over others.  At your job, would you say: “Nah, it’s cool, I wanna put Johnny over, give him the promotion!”.

    • SJP315

Wrestling is different from any other regular job smart guy, you’re only as good as the guy you’re in the ring with which makes it a team effort to do what’s right by helping eachother to look as good as possible. This is what drives the wrestling business, new stars need to be made so that the industry can keep moving and not die you do this by putting ppl over when you have the opportunity to do so and in the case of Hogan he’s far beyond being hurt as a character by taking a loss and has been for many MANY years.

There comes a point where you don’t need a title to be over and you don’t need wins you can go out there and make someone else a star. Terry Funk made stars in ECW, he understood his time was passed and he wanted to contribute to the industry that gave him the life he made for himself. Ric Flair put tons of guys over the biggest one being Sting, without Flair and his willingness to make Sting look good and go over he wouldn’t be anywhere close to what he became and is today.

Steve Austin put over tons of guys including Mikey Whipwreck in ECW and it was AUSTIN’S IDEA TO LOSE AND HAVE MIKEY WIN, so he actually did what is similar to your statement above with the “nah, it’s cool, I wanna put Johnny over, give him the promotion” only instead of Johnny it was Mikey.

Rock volunteered to put Brock Lesnar over at SS when he won his first title and has put over countless others and will prob be putting over Cena at WM bc ITS WHAT’S BEST FOR BUSINESS.

    • SJP315

A couple others that come to mind off the top of my head:

Foley putting over Edge at WM22
Cena putting over Punk at MITB
HHH putting over Batista at 3 straight ppvs
Kurt Angle putting over James Storm
      Tommy Dreamer putting over Raven

All those and many MANY more were done because it was good for BUSINESS NOT JUST 1 INDIVIDUAL

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_TN7DX5VEZQVDXJU5JPKQFMRLDI Seth

You can give me all the examples you want, I don’t care. If those people had creative control, it’d be a different story. They’d do the same as Hogan. Like most, who gives a shit what’s good for business? Do what’s good for you.

        • Anonymous

I hope you’re never in charge of a business.

        • Sjp315

Do you really think Austin, Rock, Foley didn’t have say in what they wanted to do? Do you really think Austin of all ppl couldn’t tell Vince “I’m not putting that guy over” of course he did just bc it wasn’t in his contract doesn’t mean he didn’t have Vince’s ear. HBK didn’t have creative control but CONSTANTLY refused to put ppl over and Vince just let it happen cause hecwas the cash cow. Point being guys did what was good for business even knowing if they wanted to Vince would let them bury ppl bc of the position they were in and the draw they were.

In order for the wrestling business to survive stars have to continue to be made and YOU CAN ONLY MAKE NEW STARS BY PUTTING NEW PPL OVER or the business DIES and hundreds of ppl are out of work and wrestlers have no place to turn and we lose out on this form of entertainment we love you fucking ignorant fool

      • http://twitter.com/mizfitzero MizfitZer0

John Cena has NEVER put ANYONE over, everyone who has beaten him ends up losing to him or being made to look like a bitch by him in some way or another.

        • http://twitter.com/ApatheticHeaney Heaney

Really? Because Cena lost to Punk at two straight PPVs and hasn’t gotten his win back. Overall, Punk and Cena have had like 9 matches and I think Punk won 6 of them.

      • Anonymous

Macho Man put over DDP w/ a nonchalant “I’ll take the Diamond Cutter tonight.”

    • Boolee

You are SUCH a fucking loser!

    • Noah

Hogan did the ultimate putting over at Wrestlemania 6 with the Ultimate Warrior, losing clean to him for the first time in his time with WWF (I think). Warrior was so over as IC champ that they did something at the time that was historic in a real face v. face match. The buildup was great with the tag matches and the accidental elimination at the RR. I was more of a Warrior fan at the time so I was ecstatic  when he won (I bought the PPV and taped it).

  • The Guest

Thanks for answering the WCW question. It always frustrated me that people thought actual wrestlers put the company out of business for bad booking. It can be the catalysis for it but never the sole reason.

  • http://twitter.com/diggler19 Diggler

hogan was boo’d for his real american gimmick? cena’s at a WHOLE different level haha. cena must have thick skin for getting boo’d non-stop for so long. vince loves that polarizing crap tho….

    • Sirius Knight

Cena is by far the strongest man in pro wrestling as well as having the realist fanbase on the planet. This man has a shirt out declaring peoples hate for him as well as having people buy tickets just to boo him. You tell me if that’s happened before Cena, because I don’t know where else to look. That’s also another reason why WWE won’t turn him heel because what’s the point of having the guy go out to be boo’ed as a heel when its already done with him as a face? That’s astonishing to me, that a guy can’t turn because there is no need for it.

      • http://twitter.com/mizfitzero MizfitZer0

John Cena has xpac heat by wrestling fans and hulk hogan pops for the kids who don’t know any better.
He is not the strongest man in pro wrestling he is the most overhyped and constantly shoved down your throat man in wrestling history.
All in all, the guy is only the top guy because kids buy his merch, in 2006 he was despised and hated and getting boo’d out the building but WWE needed a top guy and for some reason kept pushing the guy we didn’t want, WWE going PG saved Cena’s ass because at least now he gets some cheers.
If WWE hadn’t gone PG Cena would never have stayed top guy this long, nuff said.

It still pisses me off about that whole Drew/Tiffany thing. Its so dumb that creative lets something like that affect your job. It was just a big argument that disturbed people and cops came. No one got hurt, and I don’t think anyone was going to get hurt. Its not like Drew beat her up or anything like that. They should only punish you for things in your personal life if that thing makes the company look bad, which that incident didn’t.

    • Clompka

Who fucking cares what you think? Oh, wait, your mom probably did – when she realized you were watching her floss my shit out of her teeth last night.

      • Anonymous

Wow, an “I fucked your mom last night” insult. What are you, 12?

        • Forceton Banfodder

There seem to be a lot of 12 year-olds on this site lately.

    • Sirius Knight

So you would allow someone with a domestic violence dispute going on move up in your company? I understand that it was Tiffany’s fault for all that but its hard to keep pushing a guy and firing the female worker. Can you imagine the amount of backlash they would recieve from the female activists group in America alone? It would be crazy.

      • Anonymous

Who said there was violence in it? None of the reports said that, so its safe to assume it didn’t go that far. All reports also said it was all (or mostly) on Tiffany, even she said that. If that’s the case, then WWE has every right to fire her and keep pushing Drew. If activists are gonna go against something, they better learn the whole story. Seems like they would hear “woman fired” and they immediately wanna shout sexism.

  • Anonymous

amen to that brother. never EH-EH-EH-EH-EVER get married

  • Anonymous

Lets get something straight without Hogan WCW would of never made it on Monday night’s and beaten WWE 86 weeks straight I think? Anyways If Hogan did anything it was make WCW a monster just like he did in the WWF in the 80′s and I would even contribute alot of the AWA’s sucess in 82-83 to Hogan as well. How many people did’nt even know what TNA was 2 years ago but since Hogan that company has been put on the map too.

    • Gange

      Get yourself straight faggot

  • pwnez

I hope everyone knows it’s not just one persons fault for the death of WCW. Alot of things piled up and it took a toll on the company, end of story.

John Cena heel for most of his career made my day. Lol

  • Anonymous

For the first time EVER i will actually post that i lold at that last answer AND I’m a cena fan XD but it was toooooooo funny. lololol

  • Bonesbbby

I have to agree with Seth about Hogan. Mosy wrestlers up until the time Hogan came on the scene got paid crap money and worked almost every night. Hogan brought Money into the business and it never would have exploded like it did if it wasn’t for him. Flair, even in his best days couldn’t have put wrestling on the map like Hogan Did and besides where would you and your site be if it wasn’t for him. Back in the back alleys and dressing rooms.

    • Anonymous

I’m almost Sure Vinny Mac would have found another juiced up muscle head if Hogan were not around

      • http://twitter.com/mizfitzero MizfitZer0

He did, years later. John Cena.
