Former WWE & ECW Champion Rob Van Dam was interviewed by FanHouse.com to promote this weekend’s WrestleReunion event in Los Angeles. Some highlights:
How to “Spice Up” Today’s Wrestling: “I would say bring back the day of the jobber. When I was a fan, when I was younger, wrestlers were larger than life because I would watch them totally annihilate some local scrub, some guy that was in the ring, I didn’t know who the jobber was. We called those enhancement matches and they hardly ever do them anymore. That to me was how you build the wrestler, and when I found out two of these superstars would be battling each other, whether it was near me at a live show or when it was on Saturday Night’s Main Event, that was huge and it drew great interest and enthusiasm because I got to see these two big wrestlers who I’ve seen just destroy everybody actually face each other.”
Van Dam feels that the Monday night wars forced both companies to abandon jobbers and always put on marquee matches, but looking back, it’s hurt the companies’ abilities to build stars and the overall product:
“Ever since Monday Night Wars, every single match from the bottom to the top of the card seems like it has to be main-event quality — superstar vs. superstar, superstar vs. superstar — and then you gotta find a political way to go into the finish, you know, to try to deck one guy while doing what you want with the other. It’s a bunch of bulls**t I think. You know, I really think that the enhancement matches were what brought everybody into WWE in the ’90s.”
The possibility of returning to WWE or going to TNA: “I mean, it’s possible that I could be interested in either TNA or WWE if it was the right amount of work vs. pay ratio. That’s basically what it is, and I haven’t had that deep of conversations with anyone yet, really. So I don’t know if it’s out there or not, since I haven’t been the active one out there pursuing, you know, the information comes to me as it comes when they’re reaching out to me.”

isn’t it better when someone like Shemus anniliates an actual superstar makes him look even that much better….I”m sorry RVD but no one wants to see jobbers anymore….maybe he should go to TNA the land of the Jobber!
See, that’s where you’re wrong wager. It may make the winning wrestler look better, but it totally buries the other star. Now, they’re doing it right on ECW by building up guys like Vance Archer against local talents. That is exactly what RVD was talking about. Bringing in the local cats, giving them their big break on TV in an enhancement match. It actualyl works out well for both guys. Winning star continues his push, losing guy gets a tryout, as it were to see how we can perform in front of the cameras. That’s how Samoa Joe and Styles got their break. WWE Velocity. Go look em up on YouTube. Now look where they are. Two of the biggest stars in TNA right now.
Wow. Talk about disconnected. Just to prove how ridiculous RVD is being, there should be a poll on this site regarding the return of the jobber. 80’s wresting was all jobber matches until the main event, which was generally mid-card v. mid-card. The only quality matches occurred at PPV’s, which also didn’t happen 13 times a year. Entire shows would go by with zero question of who would win every single match. RVD has obviously shown how lazy he is; refusing to sign unless he gets a cadillac house show contract. Now he wants to wrestle no names at the shows he DOES work. Ugh…
I think What WWE has done with the jobber is the better way to go. I think they do still have jobbers. Guys like Santino, Chavo, Golddust etc. pretty much play this role now. They lose almost every time out, but they have personality and win every now and then to try and give there matches a little more credibility. We all know the turn out is predetermined but at least when these guys are in a match I still think the ”jobber” has a chance to win. as opposed to some local no name that will never have a chance to win cause you know he’s not on TV next week.
.Yes, I remember local jobbers use to get destroyed when wrestling came to your town & long time ago on TV. I use to love to see them get destroyed by the superstars also the “jobbers” got to show off there in ring ability and hone there skills as well.
Exactly, stormeo. That’s the whole point of the jobber. I miss good matches like that. The local kid would get a little offense in, but ultimately get utterly destroyed by the actual star. *thumbs up* Good times indeed…
Yeah, there were also a few times they used that jobber stuff to bring in new guys. Santino would be a prime example of that one. Granted he’s back in the jobber role again, but him winning the IC belt his first night in the company was a pleasant suprise for a chance.
RVD is doing my head in. Pick a company Rob! I don’t care if he signs for WWE, TNA, ROH, Dragon Gate or CZW for all I care just stop talking about which company you will choose, and just do something.
