Our Lady Peace Discuss Retiring Chris Benoit’s Theme Song

Jon Chattman of The Huffington Post conducted an interview with Canadian alternative rock band Our Lady Peace where they discuss how they’ve had to retire Chris Benoit’s WWE theme song “Whatever” altogether because of the incomprehensible tragedy that took place five years ago.

Over a three-day period ending on June 24, 2007, Benoit killed his wife Nancy and strangled his seven-year-old son Daniel before committing suicide via hanging. Chattman, a music blogger, asks band frontman Raine Maida and guitarist Steve Mazur if they still play “Whatever” following the event.

“I couldn’t imagine singing that to be honest, it’s so tied into him and the tragedy that happened, I just couldn’t get it out of my head,” says Mazur.

Maida adds they’ve removed the song from their catalog. Chattman thinks it “sucks” they no longer play it since it’s such a “kickass” song.

Why is this news?…I knew years ago that they no longer played this song

It was a kickass song. But it makes little sense to retire the song now 5 years after the incident.

I think the title means more “OLP are discussing why they chose to retire it” and it has been retired since this happened, just SEScoops posted this interview today.

I still hear the music to this day, and it only reminds me Benoit’s career as a wrestler. I prefer not to think about anything else… The song is great, still love it to this day

  • JB2012

I am still a believer that Benoit was set up.  I still listen to the song all the time and do think of his career when I hear it.  Despite out of the ring, he still deserves the HOF for what he did for the business.

  • DHInc

I’m glad that they don’t play the song anymore since it’s got so much bad history behind the person who used the song as his entrance theme.

Chill out. Though he is most likely wrong, he was saying that under the assumption that Benoit was set up. Get your all-caps off his dick.

  • Jdb 2013

I belive it was triple murder I used to think he snapped too but then I studied the case recently and there is more evidence out there that he dident do it than there is of him doing it the media just said it was murder and roid rage because in there minds he was just some fake wrestler and to them all wrestlers do roids so it was an easy cop out in my opion the memoirs were all murdered by some extorsinest or someone associated with Kevin Sullivan or Sullivan himself

sorry its still early….TROLL TROLL TROLL TROLL oh yeah and your a scumbag

    • Kaylyn Owens

I still remember the day it happened. I was at a hospital, believe it or not. My dad and I couldn’t even began to understand why he “snapped” and did what he did.

  • Jdb 2013

Meant to put benoits damn iPod auto corrects

  • Cena’s missing balls

    Very sad…….R.I.P

I understand where you’re coming from, I just didn’t think it was right to target JB’s comment about it. As far as the vulgar bit goes, I like how you edited out your “you can suck it now” before replacing it with that statement. :P Slurp. I like to have fun while commenting too, don’t take it personally.

I actually didn’t know you could retire a song until I heard about this…=P…but yeah…it does make sense why they retired it though…I think if I heard that song I’d think of Benoit and it’d creep me out a little…=/

You think they would’ve done it the second it happened. It makes no sense.

  • GameXXX

He was good wrestler and good song, It was very sad for me to see benoit pass away well i know thats life but i’m always going to listen the song and videos games of it. :(

It may suck, but it’s a good idea. Hardly no one will remember him for his in-ring skills. Only what he did, and that’s too bad.
