Ryback Says He’s Better Than Goldberg Ever Was

Ryback addressed oft-made comparisons between himself and Bill Goldberg during an interview published in the latest issue of WWE Magazine. He said they don’t bother him and that “people are misinformed.”

“People see a big guy with a shaved head who’s intense, and they draw those comparisons,” said Ryback. “I will say this: Goldberg did this for the money. He was never a fan of wrestling. I do this because I have a passion for it, and that’s the biggest difference between Goldberg and me.”

“I’m not here to make five million dollars and then walk away. I’m here for life. And, I firmly believe that I’m much better than he was in the ring. He was great, and I was a fan of his when I was younger. But, I feel I’m a better athlete and wrestler than Goldberg ever was, and people are going to see that over time.”

DISCUSSION: Does Ryback have the potential to be better than Goldberg was in his prime? Who would win in a match between RYBACK and GOLDBERG? Would you want to see this dream match at WrestleMania 29??

Well let’s see if Ryback holds to that claim of never leaving.

  • Elgwyn

I’ve heard news that Ryback is genuinely awesome backstage and gets along well with most Superstars. I can’t really say his better than Ryback or vice versa but one thing is for sure, this guy has a positive attitude. However, his main event push is quite rushed. He’s not ready yet.

  • pwnez

I’ve never been a fan of Goldberg since I never really found him to be entertaining, nor did he seem like a good wrestler.

Ryback is getting there and I actually prefer him over Goldberg. I want to see him expand more though, wrestling wise. From an entertainment perspective he is pretty cool. His push is happening too early though.

    • SaviorSandow

I agree. Ryback has improving to do on his wrestling but he is entertaining to watch. If he does face off against Punk at HIAC he should lose.

    • InfiniteRTG

Ok i’m not going to start any trouble and I want to make this as mature as possible. I won’t argue with you and I won’t counter anything you say. I just have a simple question so I can understand your logic. Everything I say to you for now on will be questions. Please answer the questions without getting heated.

Can you make a list of the moves that Ryback does and tell me which moves are and are not official wrestling moves?

Heres my list as an example. Feel free to change this if you disagree. I won’t argue. Just trying to get a better understanding of what’s going through your head.

(Keep in mind these only are just moves Ryback does)

      Official Wrestling Moves:

Clothesline, Powerbomb (A few variations), Backpack Stunner, Cradle Muscle Buster, Bigboot to the stomach, Military press variations, Spinebuster, Fallaway Slam, Overhead Belly to Belly.

      Not Official Wrestling moves:

When he takes his opponent’s head and bashes it on the mat multiple times

      • Mr_DJ

        fall away slam

      • pwnez

The moves Ryback do are basic in-ring moves anyone can do. I’m talking about how he never uses any holds or submissions. When someone trains another to be a wrestler, they teach them how yo grapple, hook, and sometimes mat techniques. I’m not saying what he does aren’t official moves but they are extremely simple and basic. It’s also all he ever does.

You don’t have to be technical in order to be a good wrestler. Look at guys like Sandow, Rhodes, Dibiase, Kidd, Castagnoli, Hero, Ziggler, Bryan, Punk, Vader, Kane and many others who brawl around but also throw in holds and some submissions. That to me is good wrestling.

This is something that you and I will never agree on and yes, i’m also not going to fight anymore. I read up and watch videos of guys like Benoit, Angle, Bryan, SDR, and many other great wrestlers and that’s what I go by. Those I mentioned also know how to brawl but always did more than that. Even Angle has stated that he thinks Cena, Orton, Miz and a few others aren’t good wrestlers due to lack of ring technique. Angle may not be the nicest guy around but he knows good wrestling, just like Thesz, Gotch and a ton of others so I take their word for it.

I’m willing to let this go by simply saying that some like brawling and some don’t. I do to an extent but I prefer when a wrestler adds more to their moveset. To me this is good/great wrestling.

        • InfiniteRTG

1st: So are you saying that you have to have alot of submissions to be considered a good wrestler?
2nd: I agree. Thats what i have been trying to say to you for a while now. We agree!!! Yay!!!!
3rd: I agree with everything you said! We just change words a little bit. For example you and Angle say “in ring technique”, I say “agility”. Yes Angle is a good wrestler especially when he did “real” wrestling in the olymipics. We agree again! Holy Shit! (yes i know this is kind of immature but im just happy we agree)
4th: I’v told you this before. You like guys with a huge moveset and so do I. But to be honest i dont really care that much and dont choose to criticize them for it. Alot of guys lowered their moveset because they no longer have something to prove. For example if you watch the Orton DVD he admits he lowered his moveset after his talk with Pat Paterson for physical longevity purposes.
          Good talk

          • pwnez

No, but knowing how to grapple and use some submissions properly helps to make someone a good wrestler and alot more entertaining to watch.

Like I said, no sense in fighting and i’m glad we agree on certain things. Truce.

          • InfiniteRTG

Yes you are right. I remember when I said being a good wrestler means you don’t botch a lot. You said the same thing but you worded it differently by saying, “knowing how to grapple and use some submissions properly”.

I always said that a ‘basic” moveset is just as cool as a big/expanded moveset (yes I admit this is an opinion). I appreciate any move a wrestler does as long as he does it properly without botching like I said in my first paragraph. A bigger moveset is just a plus, and like you said, a lot more entertaining. That’s why Brock Lesnar (back in earlier days) is my favorite wrestler of all time.

He can’t do anything unscripted, so I wonder who wrote that.

    • G.I.R.L.

1st thing I thought while reading: ‘Acknowledging a past star? Who wrote this for him?’ This is the exact same scenario with Beth Phoenix back in 2007 (I believe); during a WWE interview, she claimed that she was stronger and better than Chyna because Chyna got too comfortable in her spot.

  • AngelFlow

He is a good entertainer (not like Goldberg which sucked huge in that aspect) and I think he can improve more in the ring. The problem with Ryback is that the WWE is giving a huge push too early in his career and that can backfire to them.

  • BanTheTrollsSEScoops

    Shut up dude.

And you’re the reason this website is going down the tubes. Do us a favor and get the hell off this website.

  • Satishwarne708

Goldberg used to be visibly tired after 6 or 7 minutes in every match while big Skip here can go for an hour or more beating up people!

  • johnny brooklyn

ur wifey sucks cock for a living “angel dark”

  • kquickstillsucks

I am not sure hes a better athlete than Goldberg but time will tell if hes better in the ring he never ended anyone’s career like Goldberg did so he got that going for him. Think hes starting to get over but hasn’t reached Goldberg status yet. Seems Reeves is a lot more humble than Greenberg ever was though.

  • Stranger

Goldberg never really was that good to begin with. It was the way he presented himself and his push that got him over with audiences around the world. You know, bald tattoo’d guy who is “intense” and beats people up. It worked and that was fine I guess, but he wasn’t anything special on the mic or in the ring if you think about it.

Ryback isn’t a great wrestler himself, but he’s already more watchable to me because he has reinvented himself, changed his gimmick into something that is more interesting than “Skip Sheffield yip yip yip”, came up with a catchy slogan, etc.

I would like to see him expand his moveset and improve his wrestling skills, though I don’t see it happening. I think they’re just going to stick to his power style.

    • Stranger

I also have to agree with some of the users who mentioned his push being way too soon. It’s ridiculous that they’re strongly considering him against punk at Hell in a Cell. It would be a lot more effective if they save that match for later on down the line.

In fact, seeing how the crowd keeps getting more excited when he shows up, I would’ve preferred they continued the feud with Miz for the IC title. He could’ve done something productive for the belt which is very much needed right now.

Oh well. I’m hoping for Cena vs. Punk in a Hell in a Cell match. Their rivalry has been good enough to make me want to see that match. Hopefully Cena will be ready. Even if he is he should take some time off afterwards.

      • http://twitter.com/FlipCity1017 Jager1017

i’d be fine with ryback losing to punk if they go that route. then maybe the goldberg comparisons would stop. when i heard about the character i thought it was stupid, but he’s definitely grown on me.

  • Mickey85

Goldberg had far more natural charisma and a better screen presence than Ryback does or probably ever will. I am not a Goldberg fan by any stretch of the imagination, but he came off naturally to the audience and Ryback does not. I cannot believe everyone is falling for this whole Ryback thing.

    • GeniusKing
      • Mr_DJ

Sheffield never had a gimmick till Ryback anyways…
Goldberg is your typical power house, there’s nothing really original about that.

      • AngelFlow

Almost all wrestlers have changed gimmicks a few times in they’re careers (look at HHH, Undertaker, Cena, Orton, Batista, Kane, Hogan, Punk, Daniel Bryan, Christian, Edge, etc.) Goldberg connected with the fans, but it was not for his charisma. The guy was a huge freak monster who was given a “gimmick” of a unstoppable monster (he really was another power house who was really overrated. He didn’t improve at all in his entire career). Ryback still a young wrestler with a long way ahead. What I am saying is he can improve and gets better and maybe he will be a main eventer, but no because he is (by you and some fans) a Goldberg “wannabe”.

    • G.I.R.L.

I’m inclined to agree. Goldberg’s aura was natural whereas Ry’s seems forced.

    • ItsProgressNow

don’t get me started on the Terminator gimmick. Goldberg is the original, who was just being himself, an asskicker to the core. Ryback is just a Goldberg rip-off.

    • Guest

So true. I’ve been watching wrestling for a while now and back in the 90’s when the Monday Night Wars were in it’s prime Goldberg came outta nowhere and I remember me and my bro just feeling something from this Goldberg guy. His look and the intensity of his incredable short matches spoke to people. Ryberg is clearly a cog in the machine. A product of Corporate know it alls who saw this huge guy and gave him a gimmick to sell toys and tshirts. Although i believe he didnt steal RVD’s look. I heard they know eachother and Ryberg asked RVD for the number of the guy who air brushes his tights. But yeah anyway, Goldberg was a natural force where as Ryberg is WWE forcing him down our throats. To many people are falling for this guy and honestly, it makes no sense. When u saw Goldberg spear someone and than Jackhammer the,, it was awesome. Rybergs finisher is just stupid.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Black14th Steve James

Regardless of whether or not you liked Goldberg, or are sitting on a website ten years later, “Monday-morning quarterbacking” him, the fact is, Goldberg was really popular, and to be compared to him isn’t a bad thing. It’s better than being compared to Brooklyn Brawler, or Hornswoggle. Being compared to the top guys, or aspiring to attain the same level of success, is a good thing, as long as Ryback brings his own spin on the “unstoppable baldie” gimmick.
And I agree that it’s waaay too soon to bring him into the main event picture. Give him some PPV wins, get him back on the IC trail, enter him into the Royal Rumble, maybe even let him finish in the final four. But stretch this push out until the 2014 Royal Rumble, then let him win it, then he can win the Title at WM30. And if Punk isn’t the Champion before Wm30, make him the Champion, just so we can watch Ryback wad him into a greasy ball and kick him out of the arena.

  • Elvin Zammit

How can ryback even compare himself to goldberg ? this like his 3rd comeback, no titles, no legacy whatsoever. Goldberg had a winning streak of 173 and beat some of the worlds wrestling legends. H then came to wwe and beat the rock, HHH, Brock lesnar and also captured the world heavyweight title, something that not many wrestlers have done. Goldberg has a built reputation and was a natural and will forever be my favourite wrestler of all time. He can also lift wrestlers with ease.. AKA Big show in WCW

    • AngelFlow

Its still real to me dammit.

  • Scott Kinnard

WWE would never have signed Goldberg had it not been for WCW. But even when he came to WWE, you could see just how bad a worker he was. Don’t get me wrong, Goldberg is a hell of an athlete but could he do a 30 minute match with a CM Punk or an HBK? No chance. Even when he wrestled HHH, HHH had to carry him through the matches. Ryback is no different, if they put him in the HIAC match with Punk, he will embarrass himself…

I agree with Ryback, he is still green but Goldberg was a douche and still as a douche to the wrestling world to this day. He is so arrogant and up his own arse it’s untrue. I hope Ryback improves over time because I like his intensity and I think with the right polish he can be a big time player.

  • Reality

  • justmyopinion

its funny how certain fans cant seem to move on…
i remember when the big show was compared to aundrey the giant & abyss was called a mankind copy & john cena was wwe’s modern day replacement for hulk hogan, randy orton was ridiculed for using ddp finisher, the guy from whales was compared to batista, daniel bryan compared to benoit now ryback compared to goldberg.. all these guys have something that wwe/wwf/wcw/tna discover to be something special compared to others – lets just enjoy it & see how it plays out – in my opinion i believe this interview is wwe’s way to get a reaction out of goldberg, this won’t be the first time nor the last we hear of this & if it worked & goldberg had a match with ryback many fans would love to see it & it would be great for business. what happens when we see another masked 6 foot giant are we gonna compare him to kane or undertaker?? who gives a shit.. if sin cara was signed by wwe a year after rey mysterio retired would be compare them aswell.. it doesn’t matter cos wrestling will still continue reguardless. i also remember when edge started using the spear & was criticised for that cos goldberg used to use it near the same time – then edge is forced to retire years later & everyone misses seeing him perform now. comparisons will always be made but most these guys are one off’s in their own ways lets just enjoy it – honestly i’d like to see ryback be better than goldberg cos then wwe has somebody else to give a title too instead of cena,orton/the usual people.

  • kquickstillsucks

Thinking about it more I think this could be planting the seeds for a Goldberg vs Ryback match at Mania.

  • Best in the Cenation

Rybotch running his mouth, I want to see him cut some promo first before he bitch about being much better than goldberg.

  • howard chaney

When Goldberg was popular, he was considered a Stone Cold Steve Austin Ripoff . hell they all copy from one another but the best are able to add something special to their gimmick and make it their own. i have yet to see that with Ryback but i do think he has better ring skills.but if he doesn’t develop a personality he will never be more than a glorified jobber.

    • WCWPunk

jobber?! So who has Ryback jobbed to Lmao

Ryback is no Goldberg by far…. but he is exactly what the WWE needs a fit powerhouse that is truly dominant. The fact the smaller wrestlers are being put over due to charisma is just unrealistic and quite frankly looks obviously jobbed. now we have a “somebody who draws a crowd” to hold Heavyweight Gold and take on Kane Big Show, Lesnar, Tensai, Sheamus, Del Rio etc… I’m tired of seeing pint sized CM Punk and others look so dominant. The Attitude Era was so good because not only did they talk trash but there was always a legitimate wrestler that could march down that ring and shut them up, which created suspense. Hate Ryback if you want but he seems to be the only one WWE will allow to shut up the overconfident midgets before viewers change the channel. My point is WWE needs more fighting less talking and how convenient Ryback doesnt seem to grab a MIC.

    • WCWPunk

Disagree. It doesn’t take a big sized wrestler to be champion. Legends like Bret “The Hitman” Hart, Shawn Michaels, and “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair were all great World Champions.

This is more than obvious as this is WWE’s attempt to tease Goldberg to sign a Legends deal. C’mon, with the recent luck of signings the WWE has accomplished so far (Booker T, Mick Foley, The Rock, Brock Lesnar) Do you really think WWE has forgotten about Goldberg, think again.

  • Stoops Nic

Goldberg marks unite! Goldberg sucked. He was always overrated and the fact that people still act like he was God is maddening to me. Don’t get me wrong Ryback is not much better but at least he’s in it for the business and not himself.

    • WCWPunk

      Good post. Very well said.

  • the4thwiseman

I need to see more of Ryback…Liked his match with The Miz..All power moves. only time will tell.

  • MisterE

Whatever whatever…..no comparison..Goldberg is a much better athlete, has much better in ring skills, much better mic skills, is more dynamic and energetic, and hands down has a much better finisher. Ryback, is a slow big muscular guy who get’s tired fairly fast during his in ring performance. Ryback is a novelty beast wrestler, of which the wwe has created many just like him or those who had similar personas over the years. So with that said, could Ryback ever be looked at as legendary wrestlers such as the Undertaker, Kane, Bigshow, Batista, Yukozuna, Big John Stud, King Kong Bundy, just to name a few? Does Ryback have this sort of presence that will afford him legendary status such as those previously named? Ryback will never reach such a level, he will play out his career as an ‘Earthquake, Typhoon, Giant Gonzalez, The Great Khali, Adam Bomb’….gimmicks.

  • http://www.facebook.com/larryluv110 Larry L Abernathy

    in a nutshell. YES>>>YES>>>YES

  • Odin

I think a lot of Goldberg’s WWE career (I didn’t see the WCW stuff which I have been told is a lot better) was him being carried through matches and then, John Cena like, powering his way to a win at the end.

Unfortunately, unless they heel turn him down the line, I can see Ryback going the same way. He’ll get beaten and worn down, hit the big clothesline and Shell Shock and that’ll be it.

I’m wondering if Goldberg came across better because the Spear is such a simple “move”? Imagine how incredible it would look if Goldberg speared Dolph Ziggler? Dolph would never stop flying. Perhaps Ryback needs a larger repertoire of wrestling holds before he can say he’s better than a veteran.

  • Macc Frost

i got a question wasn’t Goldberg one of the biggest threats to the WWF during the attituder era, say what you want about GoldBerg but Bill was a defensive tackle in the NFL , he is athletic , more and intense , Goldberg was a huge Draw so Ryback isn’t close to be on his level , Ryback is just Frustrated the Fact people chant him Goldberg plus just like Cena he is a Vince Mcmahon Guy but by saying Feed me more thats one Catch Phrase calling your self big hungry i rather give that name to Brodus Clay , Ryback isn’t there yet , Ryback is in a era of no competion with Goldberg he delt with , Hogan , Nash , hhh, He even beat The rock which im sure some people didnt like , Who has Ryback beaten a bunch of jobbers man please. No stars in this Cenation/PG era is better then the stars from the past and i mean NO ONE , when you set rating records and ppv buys at least over 600,000 come hol at me until then Stars from the past are still better . blame vince , cena , hhh for shitting on the young talents from the past and present

  • kaos

why would they do a goldberg ryback match? it just wouldnt work.
goldberg would never put ryback over and the loss would kill any momentum ryback has going for him.

  • Swag Daddy

Ryback will be huge in his prime but he will not be a Goldberg he just doesn’t have it in him imo, I’d love for him to prove me wrong though. Goldberg would most likely win as he was flexible and from what we’ve seen from Ryback it’s just all muscle and actually I wouldn’t want to see this match at WM because I feel like if Goldberg ever were to return it shouldn’t be against Ryback (even if Rybacks in his prime) because it wouldn’t be much but two big dudes going and practically showing off strength.

  • john hansford

ryback yes your a fierce competitor but so was goldberg. now as for you being better then goldberg there is only one way to find out. two out of three falls matchs, goldberg needs to come back for one year or how ever long needed. on three different nights have a match and the final match be at a big ppv like wrestlemania could be 29 or even bigger the big 30. goldberg may have gotten older but i bet he’s still has it.

  • Geno

Weather he is better then Goldberg is something that will be answered over time. I give him points for believing in himself tho. Nobody will believe you are the best unless you believe it about yourself, then you will win fans over.IMO Lesnar will always be the best new debut of a unstoppable monster of the three. I just keep waiting for Ryback to say “yep yep yep what it do?” the corn fed meathead is still stuck in my mind.

Ryback isn’t half as good as goldberg was when he started iv been a fan scents i was 7 and iv seen plenty of superstars now once i seen goldberg first match he was a monster and didn’t botch a move like ryback has and lets see ryback pick up a guy that is 500+pounds over his head like goldberg did 2 the giant aka the big show or win 178 matchs in a row without a loss think skip aka ryback needs 2 get his story straight be4 running his mouth about a superstar who made things happen and gave a 110% ever time he entered the ring

  • http://www.facebook.com/craig.deboard Craig DeBoard

It’s stupid to compare the two in the first place. They aren’t the only guys to have undefeated streaks in wrestling. Shit, Tatanka was undefeated for two years.

Ryback is better. He has a larger moveset and seems to genuinely love wrestling as opposed to just fat Turner paychecks. Fuck Golberg.

  • Pat Flag

#thekillingmoon I hardly doubt Goldberg would last in todays style of wrestling and just bashing and calling him “rybitch” makes you look very uneducated and lets not forget that this is all a work, if vince wants him bigger than goldberg, hell do it

  • http://twitter.com/nickdoubleD Nicolai

he does have a point about the passion for wrestling and to me that means something. Ryback was on the indies forever, then ovw, then signed and sent over to fcw, then called up, failed miserably, and is now back at it trying his hardest. gotta respect that. And goldberg was a football player offered money.

  • shaenk7

  • Samboye

Comparing Ryback with Goldberg is pointless at this time. It is rather too early for that now. they are both athlete working hard to leave a mark in the sand of time. Goldberg is a man that has fought almost all the wwe strong men like Undertaker, Kane, Big show, Brook e t c and won a couple of time, he carries the fans along, he was undefeated too. How many of such great men has he stepped in to the ring with? maybe he should demand for some food from the undertaker and get the feed of his life time.
The only thing i look forward to seeing now is for him to SHUT CM punk up. and if in 2013 we see him and Gold on the stage well it might not be ……………

  • jflash211

This discussion shouldn’t even be a discussion. Goldberg was so much better in his prime. How dare Ryback say Goldberg wasn’t a fan of wrestling. He was a fan…that’s why Goldberg himself says his style was very similar to Nikita Koloff because he was a big fan. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=orpssO5dfFQ
Ryback needs to worry about making a name for himself and not compare himself to Goldberg…Goldberg was a different animal.
