WWE originally had only two matches in a caged environment, the Steel Cage and Hell in a Cell matches. However, in 2002, WWE announced the creation of the Elimination Chamber, a match that combined elements of WWE's Royal Rumble match, Survivor Series matches and WCW WarGames matches. The Elimination Chamber uses the countdown timer that comes from the Royal Rumble and War Games, the enclosed cage format from War Games, and the elimination process from the Survivor Series.
The concept of the WWE Elimination Chamber show will be that each main event match will be contested as Elimination Chamber matches. The name of the event was voted by fans via WWE's official website. Elimination Chamber was chosen over Heavy Metal, Battle Chamber, Chamber of Conflict and No Way Out. Despite the poll, Elimination Chamber will be a brand new event and will not be considered a part of the No Way Out chronology.
