1. Antonio Cesaro
This man puts the ‘W’ in WWE, he said so himself, and what better way to establish himself as the true wrestler in the land of sports entertainment than pair him up with the man who believes he brought ‘rasslin’ into the golden age (see: Attitude Era)? What benefit would Cesaro gain from being paired with Heyman exactly? Well for one Paul Heyman, as beloved as he is to hardcore fans ECW or otherwise he still garners pure hatred from the majority of arenas that he appears in, and this heat would benefit Cesaro by association, it’s a classic case of the technically gifted talent getting given the mouthpiece that he needs, ironic considering Antonio can speak multiple languages, yet his character is still seen by some as boring (see: Stone Cold Steve Austin).
Cesaro has the technical ability to work to a very standard; he comes from that crop of talent from the Ring of Honor ‘glory days’ along with the likes of CM Punk, Chris Hero, Samoa Joe et al, but in the current WWE climate I feel that he needs a mouthpiece like Heyman to push him up to the higher echelons of the card, he has that old school appeal to him along the likes of a Nikolai Volkoff, a proud patriot that fought against the pomp and circumstance of the American superstars, exactly what Cesaro should/and is beginning to be pushed as, and with Paul Heyman as his manager he can get to the top of the card quicker and with more meaning.
Down the line the possibilities for Antonio are endless, but the most interesting would be an encounter with CM Punk. The two wrestlers are true opposites with Punk being the tattooed American star and Cesaro being the straight laced Swiss wrestler, and there can be friction built between the two if they are both referred to as the ‘best in the world,’ something that Heyman can plug while Punk is away. It is a while off from being a possibility but I think Heyman can do wonders for Cesaro’s career, he can establish himself in the company off his own back, but again the association with Heyman would work very well for him.
2. Dean Ambrose
Assuming there isn’t any sort of impending timeframe in which Heyman will announce his latest acquisition, then I believe that Dean Ambrose would do well under the tutelage of Paul E.
Now, I don’t want to see the Shield split anytime soon, but a few months down the line and we will need to start seeing some cracks appearing in the team. Why have the standard tried and tested long breakup route and have Ambrose jump ship straight to an alignment with Heyman? It could work perfectly, it has already been established that Heyman has ‘paid off’ The Shield before, and there can be dissention in the ranks with Ambrose getting the group to work more and more with Heyman to the point where the other two members would be against It and he can jump ship. Moreover an interesting element to the pairing of Ambrose/Heyman is the idea of a Brian Pillman type character being kept under control by the snake like charms of a Paul Heyman. Where we see Heyman failing to keep Brock Lesnar in control during his outbursts of power and destruction, a more engaging prospect is that of Ambrose’s sick and twisted character doing such heinous acts that even Paul E is left in shock.
Again there is a wealth of talent that Dean Ambrose could work with while under the ‘Heyman Guy’ banner, a feud with Punk is an intriguing match up, however the idea of a John Cena/Dean Ambrose encounter does far more for me, at least on paper. There is already history between the two and Ambrose can enter the program saying that he is undefeated against Cena, and this can be played up as something that humanises the ‘Super-Cena’ persona a little bit.
3. Zack Ryder
Highly unlikely, but that is why I like the idea that Zack Ryder could be aligned with Paul Heyman. Zack’s character desperately needs to be rehabilitated, and the moment that Paul Heyman gives him the seal of approval it will push his credibility up a few notches, it may not completely fix the issues that the character has had over the last year plus, but it would be the perfect way to establish the change from the Long Island Iced Z character to a more serious persona that could be taken seriously.
There are a number of ways in which a Paul E endorsed Zack Ryder could operate in the WWE, it will take some doing, but Zack could be turned into a vicious performer, use weapons to put a hurting on his opponents, it seems mad now but with a bit of time and the right booking he could be shown as a viable threat to other stars on the roster. Zack could also see the error of his ways and have a major babyface turn down the line, which will be boosted with the Heyman alignment.
The one major opponent for a heel Zack Ryder character would in my mind be John Cena, the story is already there, former friends who were torn apart by Eve, Cena barely cared about what Kane did to Ryder back in Zack’s main RAW appearances, it could be a way to play the sympathy card for Cena, having him have to fight his friend over the gold, with Ryder not caring and using Heyman as his motivation, the promo work between Heyman and Cena would work perfectly.
Talents that I left off the list: Corey Graves, I felt that he and CM Punk are a little too similar, and that he could benefit from being brought up from the NXT roster in a different way. Bray Wyatt is someone that I can see being brought up from NXT soon, however I would rather see a Zeb Colter alignment for the Wyatt family as a unit (possibly taking out Jack Swagger for his failures but that’s a different story).
