Thanks to reader Lance Ryan for sending in this live report from last night's TNA No Surrender PPV:
Just got in from the No Surrender show here in Oshawa and thought I would send some live notes if you wanted to use them.
The crowd was very hot from start to finish. Before the show went live, we of course had JB out to fire us up. They moved four fans to the front row, and announced that through the night fans would be given passes to go backstage. Kind of an incentive to be loud, not that Canadians generally need it, we have been really into show I have been to live.
-Sting seemed to have some of the fans thinking that Bret Hart may be in attendance, which was ridiculous, not really sure why they chose to have him use Bret's name for a cheap pop.
-Right off the top very into Curry Man, Shark Boy, and Super Eric. The fans ate up the segments that Curry man and Hemme had together.
-The crowd was hot all night.
-During the Kong and ODB match, it looked like Kong may have been hurt, as ODB went after Saied and it took Kong a few minutes to get up. When the table didn't break from the powerbomb, it looked like she was a little worse for wear.
-ODB vs. Kong was a great brawl, it was what it was. The Knockouts using some plunder. The fans seemed to be into both ODB and Kong in this one. I think when ODB did the powerbomb spot Kong got injured or shaken up and that is why they looked confused until ODB went outside and brawled with Saied. While they brawled, Kong was slow back to her feet and seemed to be shaking some cobwebs.
-The crowd was really into Team 3D, and I am thinking that came as a bit of a surprise as Brother Ray didn't seem to be able to comprehend it. His facial expressions were amazing as the crowd started to chant "we Want tables". The crowd was a little let down after this match when there was no major spot, with Team 3D and Abyss in a match, I think they were expecting something.
-Hebner was heavily booed the whole night. I think more than anything it got worse because Sting put Bret Hart in everyone's minds. Creed was definitely the heel here, no doubting why, you come out with the Red White and Blue in Canada and immediately you are booed out of the building. Sheik winning was kind of a buzz kill to me, the finish was ridiculous. A great match, but a bad ending that left the crowd quiet.
-Wilde and Love was great. Both women got the cheers but the Beautiful People were over huge, that swayed a bit when Rhyno came out and people wanted to see a gore.
-Dutt and Lethal put on a great match, again with a poor ending. As you mentioned the crowd was largely split here between the two men. The ending with the makeout session was lame and the crowd again died. As you noted, we wanted wrestling, not a side show.
-Beer Money vs. LAX was what it was again. I knew coming in that Storm was injured, and had to tell people that as they wondered why his impact was minimal. A smattering of "where is Salinas" chants went on, as none of that was explained to the live crowd.
-Styles vs Trigg...what do I say? I knew coming in that this was not going to go over. The fact is that MMA is not nearly as big here as it is in the US. About one minute in I decided to take my bathroom break. The crowd could be heard from up there with loud "We want wrestling" chants. When I came back, I joined in on those same chants, and mentioned to a friend that I felt really badly for AJ Styles because he deserves so much better than this. The fact that he snapped after the terrible ending saved the crowd and they popped huge. I think they called the ending because of how bad it was getting over.
-The main event was well done. I knew going in that somehow Joe was going to win. With that said, I knew that Joe going over was going to get booed. Joe was booed heavily all night, however oddly, the boos were quieted when he made his entrance. I felt kind of cheated on the ending, expected more. I mean, we all knew that the ending would be run-in city, and I just felt like Sting should have been involved somehow, and thought of about six ways to better write the ending within minutes.
-After the show, Angle was slow to get out of the ring, he was busted open and seemed groggy. Needed help to leave and a lot of people left because of the long wait. Christian ended up getting on the mic and thanking the crowd. Went on to say that TNA would be back really soon and that he loves his "Peeps". Said he felt like he had let us all down and that he would get his third title reign soon.
-Overall, as I said, a hot crowd. The biggest heat of the night was easily Earl Hebner, followed closely by Samoa Joe. The biggest cheers were definitely for Sting and Christian Cage.
