WrestleMania 29 Card Update: Uncertainty, Top Matches In Question

As of this weekend, the top matches for WrestleMania 29 were planned to be:

- The Rock vs. John Cena (WWE Title)
- Alberto Del Rio vs. Jack Swagger (World Heavyweight title)
- CM Punk vs. The Undertaker
- Brock Lesnar vs. Triple H

Aside from Brock Lesnar vs. Triple H, the rest of the matches could change by WrestleMania. There has been no change in the uncertainty surrounding The Undertaker’s status for WrestleMania. If he does not work the show, there’s been talk of adding Punk to the Rock vs. John Cena match.

John Cena vs. CM Punk on Monday’s RAW also puts the Rock vs. Cena match in question. However, a lot of promotional material for WrestleMania 29 has already been sent out and features The Rock vs. John Cena as the top match on the card.

Jack Swagger’s DUI & drug arrest on Wednesday is another wrench in the plans.

A Ryback vs. Chris Jericho (working as a heel) match has also been planned, but there was no tease of the match on RAW when Ryback and Jericho partnered with Sheamus against The Shield. With Jericho off television for several weeks, it appears WWE is going in a different direction with them as well. Sheamus vs. Mark Henry has been discussed, but we’ve yet to see any buildup there either.

Top superstars like Dolph Ziggler, Randy Orton, Big Show, The Shield, Kane and Daniel Bryan are also without any obvious opponents headed into WrestleMania.

Despite the lack of direction thus far, the feeling is that the show will still be a huge success due to the WrestleMania brand, the special attractions appearing (The Rock, Brock Lesnar, Bruno Sammartino) and the show taking place in the hot New York market.

      People complain that Rock is champion, but people are ok with Taker (who literally wrestles once a year) winning the title??

      I like the Team Hell No idea. It’s a real shame Kane has been there so long and never really got a WrestleMania main event spot.

        Taker has done much more for the business as compared to Rock

        if a guy like Rock gives the business 10 years and then goes away and comes back and gets a title reign.

        Then surely a guy like Taker who gave the business 20 years! and only left due to his injuries which he suffered serving The ‘business’,
        deserves IT equally and IMO even MORE then the Rock

          Taker has had a great career without a doubt, so I’m not taking anything away from him. But Taker has pretty much been a part-timer for 9 of those 20 years.

          Taker has gone away for long periods of time and come back to win the title on several occasions.

          It’s not so much about deserving another title run as it is about what’s good for business. And in this case, Rock being champ is good for business right now.

            Taker has been a part timer for the past 3 years before that he and edge were carrying smackdown.
            It was wwe’s fault that they showed him so dominant that sometimes he couldnt even get a storyline due that same factor. but he was around and even present in house shows
            after WM 25 he became a part timer.

    Ziggler has no obvious opponent? Jericho, anyone? That’s fairly obvious to me, especially now that it seems Jericho won’t be facing Ryback. I think The Shield should face Team Hell No for the tag titles. Two of them compete, and they can win and defend it under the Freebird Rule where any two of them can defend the titles.

    Why would Jericho be the heel? He still has to promote Robot Combat League and him being a heel won’t help with publicity for the show.

    Have Jericho vs. Ryback, but make Ryback the heel. He’s getting less and less reaction from the fans every week and the only thing going for him is “Feed Me More” which only gets a reaction when he puts his arms up and down.

    You could make his hunger “so insatiable” that he doesn’t care who he faces to “please his appetite.” He was showing some major heel vibes on Raw last week

      I think the lack of reaction for Ryback is because the WWE crowd is just dead in general right now. Even Cena barely gets a reaction these days, not even from the kids. The only guys that have been getting real pops lately have been Rock, Randy Orton and Chris Jericho.

          I think it should be used as an opportunity to turn Cena heel. The Ryback character is a machine and wouldn’t necessarily care about the crowd cheering or booing him whereas Cena’s squeaky clean babyface character would.

          It would be awesome to see Cena turn heel and just blast the fans for “turning their backs” on him.

            Cena won’t turn heel because he is scared of changing his character. Whether it be because of merch sales, Make-A-Wish visits, or him just being a baby, Cena won’t turn heel. I understand Ryback’s character not caring, but it is simpler and makes more sense in the long run if Ryback is gonna be in the company for a long time.

      Agreed with the Ryback heel turn. It certainly seems like that’s where his character is going. Only problem is you already have 2 monster heels going at the moment with Henry and Show. I suppose you could say 3 monster heels when Lesnar comes back. As for Jericho a heel turn wouldn’t hurt any of his outside projects. He’s one of those guys who can play a heel on WWE TV and still comes across positive in his outside projects.

        Vince has never had a problem with having too many monster heels, he ain’t gonna change his mind now. Also Show is no longer a monster heel, he lost his edge after losing the World Title and he’ll be in mid-card until he goes back to a face. Brock will be there for 6 or 7 weeks, so after Wrestlemania, both Raw and Smackdown will have monster heels. Raw will have Ryback, and Smackdown will have Henry.

      everyone has been fed to cena/orton/sheamus so many times that they don’t matter regardless of the current push or story.
      Jericho IS over no matter what he does, cause he is that damn good.
      ryback as a heel will flop. mark henry works because he can talk and he is legit monster strong.
      ryback can’t talk, has no high impact moves, and has show muscles that blow up after his entrance. ryback running thru jobbers is the only way the character works and even with that it only works for 12months max

          Probably Mark Henry. Not that it really matters, since whoever Del Rio’s opponent is will lose the match, but beat up Del Rio enough to where Ziggler can successfully cash in his title shot.

    If that is your main events, you got some trouble. Trips vs Lesner is ok, but we just had that. Punk vs Undertaker could be good if we had the Shield get involved and Undertaker delivers 5 straight piledrivers, punk, shield, punk. Cena vs Rock would end with Cena about to win the title and he calls out Ziggler. They team up, Ziggler win the WWE title pinning the Rock. Finally, let Del Rio go against a mystery guy with the mystery guy winning the belt. My real problem with this card is we all know Rock is going to lose and sucks for us

    Team Hell No vs The Shield, towards the end they go for a triple powerbomb on Kane when Undertaker appears and joins Team Hell No, fends off two members of the Shield and wins with the tombstone piledriver – means the undertaker has limited ring time but still appears at WM and continues the streak.

    I am a huge Undertaker fan, but i will be mega pissed off if he returns to fight Punk at Mania. How much of a selfish douche would he be if he purposely decided to return so he could take away Punk’s possible only WrestleMania Main Event, drag him down the card and then have Punk job out to him, all so he can get a big fat paycheck, another Mania Victory to add to his already ricidulous list of accomplishments, and then sod off again for another year….
    Taker needs to stay out of Mania this year, but if he’s going to make some kind of appreance, that should be it – an appearance at the show. No match, no interference or anything. Let Punk get his Mania match (even if he doesn’t win), and let Taker sit back and be proud he let a fresh new face be in a WrestleMania Main Event.

        It is up to Undertaker. WWE ask him if he’s fit enough to Wrestle, and Taker can easily turn around and say No. Nothing WWE can do about that, so in retrospect , because WWE want Taker and Punk to be in a match at Mania, and Taker knows that, it’s up to him if he wants to go ahead with it or not. Think outside the box.

    Ziggler has a very obvious opponent. Whoever is World Champion after their Wrestlemania match. I foresee the WWE sticking with the Swagger Del Rio match. Swagger wins and to punish him for his arrest Zigglere cashes in on him right away. If you want Ziggler in a real match to not give away that he’s cashing in put him against Jericho later in the card and it automatically becomes a WHC match.

    Punk should be added to the championship match because he’s crucial to the title scene. Besides, you can’t build a taker match in one month, its like Cena/Rock where a good amount of time is needed to build it up. The Shield should take on Orton, Sheamus, and Ryback with Orton turning heel on the group. Team Hell No will have a match at mania with Ziggler and Jericho facing off, maybe for the title since we all know that the WHC match will open the show. Big Show is a tough one because he’s pretty much done it all except walk into mania with a world title and/or win one at mania though thanks to Swagger, he’ll more than likely face ADR. I seriously hope they don’t punish swagger to severely and take his push away but they should delay it. Mark Henry looks like he’s going to face Khali, which would be cool because then we get to see his non wrestling ass get really fucked up. They should let taker sit this one out, I rather he take another year to improve his health then to potential kill him. We need to see Cena vs Taker next year anyway

      Yes, but short comebacks are usually better, like when UT returned last year, he had an epic battle with HHH in the HIAC. The rock/Cena was built up to death and turned out to be a crap match, anyway.

        That maybe true but the Undertaker/HHH match isn’t really a good example because they just kicked up where they left off the previous year, plus it was a match between two of the biggest names in pro wrestling. Allot of people had very high hopes for Cena/Rock because everyone knows (Fans and Haters alike) that Cena can go as long as its with the right opponent the right opponent, and The Rock was rusty as hell. Plus the fact that most of the fans like to view Rock as this high caliber talent, so the expectations were too high to begin with. Personally, I think they should have another match at Mania because there is nowhere else that could contain that match. I understand that the first match was billed Once in a Lifetime (Which most of the fans are too stupid to even understand what it really meant) but they should have another match since its a match that earns millions.

    The Rock vs Cena vs Punk sounds good and could be awesome if Cena turns heel at the very end of the match, with Punk recapturing the title. Ziggler vs DeRio with Ziggler capturing (cashing in his MITB) the world title prior to WM29…with Big E, AJ and Ricardo at ring side that match could be exciting and fun for all…..just saying.

    undertaker should have a year off, if he appears then they should set up a similar match like what they did with rock and cena for last years mania. just have him come in after the main event and do the thump across the neck walk out. have them hype it up for a while then make say kane if they chose him have a losing streak from takers music so on then have him take him out in a buried alive match at wm 30. it’ll be a good story line although done before and it’ll finally get kane back into his old shell with getting him out of takers shadow.

    Alberto Del Rio vs. Swagger vs. Ziggler;

      Nearly all of those matches make 0 sense. The worst you put was ryback v undertaker… just no…. just no…. I do agree with Cesaro V Bryan and El G v Sin Cara and Christian v Y2J…. the rest make absolutely no sense, but I would love to see them, don’t get me wrong xD

    1) John Cena will unfortunately win for all the little kids.
    2)Alberto Del Rio will retain due to Jack Swaggers recent arrest (God Dammit!) and will win for the little kids.
    3)Undertaker will win, if he is going to be at WM for the little kids
    4)Triple H will win for the little kids again.
    5)Ryback will unfortunately win for all the little kids, AGAIN!

    Seems like a Face Year… oh, wait… that’s every year…

        Especially at Wrestlemania, that’s usually when its most guaranteed for faces to win, its the 1 PPV of the year that you can pretty much know that its going to have more faces winning titles/retaining than heels, and that is so annoying.

    i have no interest in mania this year.
    the matches we know about have been done, died of old age, and then done again.
    the entertaining guys, bryan, ziggler, henry, shield don’t have matches yet
    and the smackdown main event just went to hell.
    mania has zero direction this year. is there really enuf idiots to buy it off of cena/rock 2?
