WWE Employees Assigned To Watch TNA and Ring of Honor, WWE Promotes CM Punk’s “Talking Dead” Appearance

– To correct a report from last week on WWE opening Raw broadcasts with a man narrating video packages after Vince McMahon was shown a tape of TNA Wrestling’s Impact Wrestling show, he was actually informed of the concept by an employee and upon being intrigued, immediately concluded that his company could do it better. It was noted that if he had actually watched an Impact Wrestling opening, he probably would have been embarrassed with WWE blatantly copying an idea from TNA.

Multiple members of WWE’s creative staff—more their assistants—are assigned to watch tapes of TNA, Ring of Honor and WWE’s NXT, and file a report on its contents. There are other employees who work in the same capacity as consultants for the company.

Though some creative writers joined WWE with no knowledge of professional wrestling whatsoever, there are some who were prior fans.

– The official WWE website is now promoting CM Punk’s scheduled appearance on Talking Dead this Sunday night at at 11 p.m. on AMC, a live talk show that discusses episodes of the popular The Walking Dead drama series.

Yesterday on Twitter, Punk vented on WWE not promoting his talk show appearance nor his return home to Chicago tomorrow as Official Grand Marshal of the McDonald’s Thanksgiving Parade. He wrote, “Yes, I will be on @AMCTalkingDead on Sunday. Shocking how WWE didn’t promote it or get AMC the proper materials in time to announce it. I will also be the Grand Marshall in the Chicago turkey day parade. Also not announced or promoted by “my” company. Shocking. This is what happens when you go over everyone’s head to hustle and acquire your own outside appearances. #disrespect.”

Forget scouting talent, WWE is focused on scouting storylines and ideas.

Understandable, they’ve pretty much painted themselves into a corner… 3 hours for Raw, 2 hours for smackdown, 1 hour for Mainevent, & 1 hour for superstars. that’s 7 hours of wrestling content per week… It’s virtually impossible to expect them to come up with compelling content week in and week out.

      • WCWPunk

        Totally agree

      • m8h3r

NXT, Saturday Slam thing. thats 9 and a half. Plus a PPV every other day it seems.

    • DigitalWWE

I don’t hate them for doing this it even makes sense. I like this idea as long as they do it right and knowing wwe they won’t.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Josh-Foley/1326585777 Josh Foley

its one of those ideas you’d think they would of had since the monday night wars, but lack of logic and wwe makes sense why they do this now since their product is slowly going down the drain, id rather go back to 95-96 seems like those years were better and then they had no idea what to do

Looks like with Linda’s campaign down the pipes, Vince is wanting is find his fun elsewhere with the only challenge he could think of, his company’s competitors. Definitely not a bad way to garner attention to his programming, a classic ploy.

  • Lord Spliffmeister

Ohh Vince what happened 2 originality. XD I guess Heyman was right on SD when he said u stole the Attitude Era from WCW lol.

  • dae

Preshow promos in Impact, and now WWF/E, are lame! Just show a video package of the PPV from the night before or Raw’s big story from the week before and show the opening credits and let’s get it on.

  • Trevor

The very idea they hire writers who aren’t wrestling fans makes me sick! EVERY WWE WRITER SHOULD BE A WRESTLING-OBSESSED MARK!!!! That’s their fucking problem! Tone deaf morons!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Peer-Pressure/100000691268185 Peer Pressure

You serious? They really have writers who are not wrestling fans???

    • Lord Spliffmeister

I hear ya,but fans aren’t actually the best choice IMO. U get 3 different fans in a room & they all want things 2 go their specific way becuz, well, they’re fans.Look how many ppl get thumbs down on these forums 4 their comments.Shit u even get comments like “I’m glad ur not a writer”. So fans aren’t always that logical we just wanna c what WE wanna c or would like 2 c. They need writers who r passionate bout the product not bout wrestlers.

    • GodsLoyalSon

“EVERY WWE WRITER SHOULD BE A WRESTLING-OBSESSED MARK!!!!” you sir are above and beyond right in that statement. Only those that love the sport will find success in the sport

      • G.I.R.L.

Not really; the guys with the least technical training tend to make it really big. At any case, a writer can’t be obsessed with the program because they’d be bound to have favorite characters and the sort; one doesn’t need to get invested too thoroughly on one aspect of the field unless they fancy screwing up the other aspects.

They need writers who aren’t ignorant of the biz and it’s history, but whom also aren’t completely invested so much so that it seems like an18y.o. on a heavy sugar diet is writing everything.

I think they should all be fans but “obsessed marks”. Like @MrReese:disqus said fan’s don’t always agree and if the writers are that passionate and set in their ways as most marks are then creative meetings would be a disaster. Too many people jockeying for position to get their ideas across. That is why they should be at least knowledgeable fans that way they are more reasonable in their approach and willing to compromise.

If wrestling’s not in your blood get the fuck out of Stamford

  • jccox01

When I saw assigned to watch tna i thought it was drug policy punishments.

    • gabe

No, it should be to watch WWE shows because the majority of the shows are bad.

  • http://twitter.com/nickdoubleD Nicolai

WWE has gotten beyond pathetic. Your a multi million dollar company and you have to pay people to rip off competitors ideas!??? How about GETTING A NEW STAFF!!!

  • ahndaewoong

I would be happy if Vince would be embarrassed about the whole AJ, Cena Vicky storyline and end it right away.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ivor-Biggen/100003642790257 Ivor Biggen

The fact is that TNA have been the wrestling trendsetters & innovators. TNA actually believe that wresting matters while VKM is ashamed by wrestling.
TNA produce outstanding wrestling action coupled with compelling storylines.
WWE will continue to steal storyline ideas, concepts from TNA.

OFN & Gutcheck have been revolutionary ideas that have changed the way wrestling is presented forever.
With the success that Brooke Hogan has had with the KO’s division, expect WWE to try & hire a gorgeous A-lister to run the divas division.

But wrestling fans are not easily fooled, Impact will still be the preferred option for educated & elite wrestling fans.

    • Reality

How long have you been watching TNA?

      • Bro88

        Sounds like one time

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Paul-Rotando/100001892426151 Paul Rotando

They should make them watch 1980s NWA instead.

  • rob

hahah wwe is watchiing the other ,,, well at least they can see a good wrestling show and not a soap opera, with slapings,,,,

  • morph_3

The WWE hires writers who have experience writing serial television (ie. soap operas, weekly tv shows). They do not necessarily have to be a fan of the product.

  • Mr_DJ

They could of at least passed on the AJ storyline…good god WHY!?
