Hangman Page & Kenny Omega faced Private Party (Marq Quen & Isiah Kassidy) in the first match of the night.

The crowd loudly chanted “cowboy sh*t!” as Quen and Hangman locked up to start the match off. Page leveled Quen with a shoulder tackle and went for a big boot but Marq was able to avoid it.

Kassidy tagged in and booted Omega off the ring apron. Hangman battled back and Suplexed Quen on top of Kassidy. Kenny Omega tagged in and hit Kassidy with a series of chops.

Quen tagged in and flipped onto Omega outside the ring. Quen flipped onto Hangman Page outside the ring and then posed for the crowd. Marq hit Hangman with a 450 Splash in the ring and went for the cover but Page kicked out at two.

Omega tagged back in and hit a Splash onto Private Party in the corner. Hangman Powerbombed Kassidy as Isiah’s shriek echoed throughout the arena. Omega planted Quen with a Snap Dragon Suplex but turned around into a Dropkick from Kassidy.

Kassidy planted Omega with a Tornado DDT for a near fall as the crowd chanted “this is awesome!”. Quen tagged in and went for a Shooting Star Press but Omega got out of the way. Hangman went for the Buckshot Lariat but Quen ducked. Hangman was able to stop himself before he struck Omega.

Omega climbed to the second rope but Private Party Dropkicked Hangman onto him. Private Party planted Omega with Gin & Juice but Hangman Page broke up the cover. Kenny accidentally threw Quen into Hangman and Page rolled out of the ring. Hangman got back into the ring and hit a Buckshot Lariat and a V-Trigger combo with Kenny on Quen. Kenny followed it up with the One Winged Angel for the pinfall victory.

After the match, PAC was shown backstage with the Brutalizer locked in on Michael Nakazawa. PAC demanded that Omega give him his rematch or this will continue. Kenny rushed backstage as Hangman Page drank some beer on the entrance ramp.

The Women’s Title Match Was A Complete Disaster

riho statlander dynamite 1 8

Riho defened the AEW Women’s Championship against Kris Statlander tonight on Dynamite. Brandi Rhodes joined commentary for the match. Statlander started off the match in control as Dynamite went to a commercial break. When Dynamite returned, Riho connected with a Northern Lights Suplex for a near fall.

https://twitter.com/tde_wrestling/status/1215083665102950401?s=20

Statlander planted with Riho with a Superplex off the middle rope. Awesome Kong and Melanie Cruise of the Nightmare Collective made their way down the entrance ramp. Mel attacked Riho and threw her into the barricade. Kris took out Melanie with a Suicide Dive as Brandi left commentary.

Kris leveled Awesome Kong with a Suicide Dive as Brandi marched down the entrance ramp. Luther emerged from under the ring and distracted Statlander. Kong rolled Kris back into the ring and asked Riho to hit Statlander with a Crossbody. Riho hit Luther with a Crossbody instead.

Riho rolled up Statlander for a two count as Awesome Kong paced around the ring. Statlander slammed Riho to the canvas for a near fall. Kong tripped up Statlander and Riho landed on top of her for the pinfall victory. After the match, the Nightmare Collective beat Riho and Statlander down. Shida and Big Swole got into the ring for the save as Britt Baker remained seated in the crowd.

I thought that this was absolutely terrible and I don’t really understand how anyone thought it was going to work with the crowd. It made no sense how the referee kept missing the constant interference from the Nightmare Collective. The match should have ended in a DQ several times. I simply wanted to see a title match and not this garbage.

I got some serious final days of WCW vibes from the Nightmare Collective and this match. It was embarrassing to watch. Nightmare Collective is already on their way to making every website’s “Top 10 Worst Stables” post in a few years. I hope they can turn it around going forward, but this was bad television and sucked the energy out of the crowd. These are the types of segments that would drive people away if this was the first time they tuned into Dynamite.

Cody & Dustin Picked Up A Win, MJF Attacked DDP

lucha bros the rhodes dynamite 1 8

Cody and Dustin squared off against Lucha Brothers (Pentagon & Ray Fenix) tonight on the show. Cody connected with a Superkick on Pentagon and tagged Dustin into the match. Fenix hit Dustin with a Suicide Dive and rolled him back into the ring.

Pentagon connected with a Double Stomp for a near fall as Dynamite went to a break. Back from the break, Lucha Brothers had Dustin isolated in the ring. Fenix grabbed a steel chair but Arn Anderson took it away.

Dustin planted Fenix with a Spinebuster as Cody fired up the crowd. Cody tagged in and hit Fenix with a Powerslam. Cody followed it up with a Suicide Dive onto Pentagon outside the ring.

Cody took off his weight belt and launched it into the crowd. Cody went for Cross Rhodes but Fenix escaped and hit a Cutter. Dustin tagged in and connected with a Destroyer. Dustin followed it up with the Final Reckoning on Fenix for the pinfall victory.

After the match, Tony Schiavone interviewed Cody about MJF’s demands. Arn interrupted and claimed that MJF doesn’t have the stroke to lay down all these demands. Anderson stated that they will get back everyone with the answer and left the ring.

MJF and Wardlow then made his way to the ring and called Cody a coward. DDP interrupted and introduced him as the founder of DDP Yoga. The crowd broke out in a “yoga!” chant and DDP cracked up. MJF pulled out his phone and tweeted while DDP was talking. DDP referred to MJF as “Motormouth Jackoff Friedman” and “Wardblow”.

Butcher, Blade, and Bunny joined the party and MJF told DDP that he had to kiss his ring or they will send him to hospice. MJF stated that he was going to bang one of DDP’s daughters and DDP flipped out. They beat DDP down until QT Marshall and Dustin Rhodes broke it up.

MJF was the best part of the show up until this point. It was announced that DDP, QT Marshall, and Dustin will face MJF, Butcher, and Blade at next week’s Bash at the Beach episode of AEW.

Jungle Boy Picked Up His First Victory In AEW

best friends jurassic express dynamite 1 8

Best Friends & Orange Cassidy faced Jurassic Express tonight on Dynamite. The crowd got behind Marko Stunt as he hit Trent with a Hurricanrana. Jungle Boy tagged in and connected with an Atomic Drop.

Best Friends dominated during a commercial break but Jungle Boy was able to tag in Lunchasaurus when Dynamite returned. Luchasaurus booted Trent in the face and leveled Chuck with another kick.

Orange Cassidy tagged in as the crowd chanted “holy sh*t!”. Cassidy hit a Stunner and then greeted Jungle Boy with a Dropkick. Orange Cassidy hit Luchasaurus with a Crossbody and then hugged Trent & Chuck in the ring.

Trent hit Jungle Boy with a Spear as Cassidy climbed to the top rope. Orange Cassidy hit a lazy Splash and went for the cover but Marko broke it up. Stunt spiked Trent with a Destroyer that sent him out of the ring. Jungle Boy then rolled up Chuck for the pinfall victory.

Jon Moxley Tricked Chris Jericho

moxley inner circle shirt

AEW Champion Chris Jericho came down to the ring with Sammy Guevara and Jake Hager at the end of this week’s show. Jon Moxley made his way through the crowd as Jericho introduced him as his protege.

Moxley joined Jericho, Sammy, and Jake in the ring. Jericho stated that tonight is the night when Jon is going to give his answer on if he is joining Inner Circle. Moxley said that he has had a lot to think about this week and there was a lot that went into this decision.

Jon brought up Jericho offering a car and money but he doesn’t want any of that. Moxley said that he cannot be bought and that he came to AEW to dominate. Moxley accepted the offer and revealed that he was wearing an Inner Circle shirt under his jacket.

https://twitter.com/tde_wrestling/status/1215104894140604416?s=20

Moxley pointed out that there is no more dominant group in AEW and he wants to stand with Inner Circle. Jon said that Chris Jericho is the greatest of all time and claimed that Inner Circle will dominate for years to come. Moxley suggested that they pop open A Little Bit of the Bubbly.

Jericho scolded the crowd for not cheering and asked for Moxley’s music to be played. Jon asked for the car keys and Jericho presented him with them as the crowd chanted “you sold out!”. Jericho boasted about winning their matches at Wrestle Kingdom and grabbed some more champagne. Jon told Jericho that he was just kidding and that he will never join the Inner Circle.

Moxley smashed a bottle over Jericho’s head and hit him with a Paradigm Shift. Jon then escaped through the crowd as Jake Hager rushed the ring. Moxley waved the car keys around with a big smile on his face while standing in the crowd as Dynamite went off the air.

https://twitter.com/tde_wrestling/status/1215107137405362176?s=20

This was a well done segment to close the show. There remains a ton to like about AEW but Nightmare Collective ruining the AEW Women’s Championship match was tough for this show to recover from. Tonight’s episode of Dynamite had some entertaining moments but it certainly wasn’t a good show. Hopefully, things get back on track with the Bash at the Beach episode next week.

6 Takeaways From WWE NXT (1/8)

1

The January 8, 2020 episode of WWE NXT aired live from Winter Park, Florida at Full Sail University. Here are 6 takeaways from this week’s show:

Worlds Collide

pjimage 2020 01 08T192118.383

WWE opened the show with several stars coming out to the ring looking for a fight. It started with NXT Women’s Champion Rhea Ripley cutting a promo before being challenged to a title match by Toni Storm at Worlds Collide. Eventually, a six-woman tag team match was booked.

It was Ripley, Candice LeRae, and Toni Storm battling Bianca Belair, Io Shiri, and NXT UK Women’s Champion Kay Lee Ray. The babyfaces went over.

Obviously, this match and segment was done to promote the NXT UK Blackpool II event this Sunday afternoon where Ray will defend the title against Storm.

It was also a preview of what to expect at the Worlds Collide show that goes down on Saturday, January 25, 2020 in Houston, Texas at the Toyota Center over Royal Rumble weekend.

A fun match but a perfect yet simple opening segment with microphone work.

Imperium Goes Over

imperium

Imperium (Marcel Barthel and Fabian Aichner) beat The Forgotten Sons (Wesley Blake and Steve Cutler) in a first-round match of the Dusty Rhodes Classic tag team tournament as one of the hyped bouts featured on the show.

They were the expected winners in this contest and rightfully so. For months now, WWE has been booking The Forgotten Sons on television and for the majority of their matches, they go over.

I still don’t understand why because they don’t have over the top charisma and do not put on classic matches.

When this match was first announced, the impression by many fans was that Imperium was going to go over in this contest.

With that said, it was a fine match but not one that you must go out of your way of seeing unless you are a fan of Imperium.

Austin Theory Shines

Austin Theory

Austin Theory continues to impress fans who are watching at home and in attendance.

Theory took on Joaquin Wilde in a singles match and it was a fun match that saw both stars put together a nice match. Make no mistake about it though, this was a showcase for the former EVOLVE Champion.

Theory went over in the contest and rightfully so. Wilde is a talented wrestler and he had his gimmick down in TNA Wrestling as DJ Z. That isn’t the case in NXT as he seems to be still seeking what his character is supposed to be. That is evident by his ring attire.

Theory is someone to keep an eye on as he is a great wrestler but also a look of a WWE star and a ton of upside. He was the top star in EVOLVE and time will tell whether he becomes a player in NXT.

Undisputed Era Victorious

Undisputed Era vs. Gallus in a first-round match of the Dusty Rhodes Classic tag team tournament took place and the obvious team went over in the way of Bobby Fish and Kyle O’Reilly.

This match felt more like a preview of what’s to come at the Worlds Collide show that goes down on Saturday, January 25, 2020 in Houston, Texas at the Toyota Center over Royal Rumble weekend.

Out of the two matches in this tournament that took place on this show, it was the better of the two.

I expect to see this type of match at the Worlds Collide show considering the main event, which will be The Undisputed Era (Adam Cole, Roderick Strong, Kyle O’Reilly & Bobby Fish) vs. Imperium (WALTER, Alexander Wolfe, Marcel Barthel & Fabian Aichner).

Undisputed Era had to win this match whether or not they win the whole tournament considering they’re the NXT Tag Team Champions.

Chelsea Green & Robert Stone Arrive

Chelsea Green & Robert Stone

Chelsea Green and Robert Stone have made their NXT TV debut.

Mia Yim defeated Kayden Carter in a singles match. Post-match, Green attacked them. Stone walked out and said that he had signed the hottest free agent in Green to his brand that will take off in 2020.

This was a nice introduction for Green and to have Stone as her mouthpiece is a nice pair especially for fans of Impact Wrestling.

Before she signed with WWE in October 2018, Green established her name while competing under the Impact Wrestling banner as Laurel Van Ness where she was a Knockouts Champion.

Stone departed Impact Wrestling in the summer of 2017. He had a tryout with WWE in June 2018 later was a contestant on The Rock’s Titan Games show this year.

Stone, who portrayed Robbie E, signed with Impact back in 2010 where he would later find success. During his tenure with the promotion, he held the TV Title, X-Division Title, and Tag Team Title twice.

Keith Lee Is New #1 Contender

Keith Lee NXT 8 29

Keith Lee beat Cameron Grimes, Donavan Dijakovic, and Damian Priest in a Fatal 4-Way Match to determine a new #1 contender for the NXT North American Championship.

As expected, this was the highlight of the show as it had all of the components to be great with such different styles from all starts involved.

Lee was someone that many fans thought should be the top star in NXT as NXT Champion. WWE officials, which are high on Lee, had different plans as he wasn’t chosen as the NXT Champion.

In pro wrestling, when a talent has momentum behind them with a connection to vocal fans, the promoter must push that talent at the right time and it appears that NXT is doing just that.

Time will tell whether Lee gets the strap by beating Roderick Strong for the NXT North American Championship when the time comes.

Toni Storm vs. Rhea Ripley Booked For WWE Worlds Collide

New #1 Contender Set For Roderick Strong’s NXT North American Title

0

The next challenger to WWE NXT North American Champion Roderick Strong will be Keith Lee.

During Wednesday’s episode of NXT on the USA Network, WWE held a match that would determine who is next line for a title shot.

A Fatal 4-Way Match that saw Cameron Grimes vs. Donavan Dijakovic vs. Damian Priesttook place with the winner becoming the next challenger to the title. Lee was victorious, earning the right to challenge Roderick Strong for the NXT North American Title.

WWE has announced exactly when this contest will take place as it will go down in two weeks on NXT on the USA Network to help boost television ratings while they continue the war against AEW Dynamite, All Elite Wrestling’s weekly television show on TNT.

There was some speculation that the company could save it for the next TakeOver special.

WWE presents the NXT TakeOver: Portland event on Sunday, February 16, 2020 in Portland, Oregon at the Moda Center and will air on the WWE Network.

What was clear was the fact it wouldn’t take place during Royal Rumble weekend.

WWE holds the Worlds Collide event on Saturday, January 25, 2020 in Houston, Texas at the Toyota Center and will air on the WWE Network. This show is replacing the traditional TakeOver special on this special weekend.

The Undisputed Era (Adam Cole, Roderick Strong, Kyle O’Reilly & Bobby Fish) vs. Imperium (WALTER, Alexander Wolfe, Marcel Barthel & Fabian Aichner) in an eight-man tag team match has already been confirmed for the show.

Toni Storm vs. Rhea Ripley Booked For WWE Worlds Collide

Toni Storm vs. Rhea Ripley Booked For WWE Worlds Collide

0

A new match has been announced for the upcoming WWE Worlds Collide event, which is Rhea Ripley vs. Toni Storm.

During Wednesday’s episode of NXT in Winter Park, Florida at Full Sail University, NXT Women’s Champion Rhea Ripley was cutting a promo before being interrupted by Toni Storm.

Toni Storm vs. Rhea Ripley

This led to Storm challenging Ripley to a title match at the Worlds Collide, which Ripley accepted. This also set up a six-woman tag team match with Ripley, Candice LeRae, and Toni Storm battling Bianca Belair, Io Shiri, and NXT UK Women’s Champion Kay Lee Ray. The babyfaces went over.

This will be an NXT star vs. NXT UK star match. It will also come a few weeks after Storm’s first title match as she will challenge NXT UK Women’s Champion Kay Lee Ray.

This championship bout will take place at the NXT UK TakeOver: Blackpool II event this Sunday in Blackpool, Lancashire, England at the Empress Ballroom that will be broadcasted on WWE’s streaming service, WWE Network.

WWE presents the Worlds Collide event on Saturday, January 25, 2020 in Houston, Texas at the Toyota Center that will air on the WWE Network. WWE will be announcing more matches for this show in the coming weeks. Here is the updated card:

Updated WWE Worlds Collide Card

  • The Undisputed Era (Adam Cole, Roderick Strong, Kyle O’Reilly & Bobby Fish) vs. Imperium (WALTER, Alexander Wolfe, Marcel Barthel & Fabian Aichner) – Eight-Man Tag Team Match

WWE Backstage Viewership Rebounds

0

The viewership numbers are in for the latest and first episode of WWE Backstage, a weekly talk show, in 2020

The show that aired on FS1 at 11pm ET drew 124,000 viewers. This is up from last week’s 97,000 viewers, according to Showbuzz Daily.

In the 18-49 demographic, WWE Backstage drew a .04 rating this week, which is up as the previous rating last week of .03. Regarding the Cable Top 150, the episode ranked #145, the down from the #124 ranking last week.

This is the fifth-best Backstage viewership since the show officially premiered. Through the first nine episodes that aired in 2019, the show averaged 117,777 viewers per episode.

It’s an interesting number as the show was back to normal compared to the episode that aired on New Year’s Eve last week, which was expected to see a drop in viewership.

Renee Young, WWE Hall of Famer Booker T, Lacey Evans, and The Miz were featured on the show.

It should be noted that former WWE Champion CM Punk didn’t make an appearance on the show. Instead, he offered entertainment on social media where he gave some harsh comments towards The Miz.

WWE Backstage Viewership Numbers

For those who are wondering, CM Punk will make his next appearance on the television show on January 21st. Here is how the viewership numbers look like since its premiere:

  • November 5: 49,000 viewers
  • November 12: 100,000 viewers
  • November 19: 180,000 viewers
  • November 26: 121,000 viewers

CM Punk Blasts The Miz Over WWE Backstage Remarks

Cody Rhodes Addresses Belief Of AEW Having “Forbidden Door” To NJPW

2

AEW Executive Vice President Cody Rhodes has addressed the potential working relationship between AEW (All Elite Wrestling) and NJPW (New Japan Pro Wrestling).

He did so when he recently spoke with The New York Post to promote this week’s AEW Dynamite Anniversary Show.

The working relationship between the two sides has been discussed since the launch of AEW last January. Although Jon Moxley and Chris Jericho are working for NJPW, they have separate contracts with NJPW aside from their deals with AEW.

Cody Rhodes Addresses Partnership

Rhodes started out after being asked about Jericho making it known that he thinks there should be a working relationship. Rhodes thinks it was strange that fans are asking for the partnership because he doesn’t know what a partnership would look like other than what you saw already.

He brought up Jericho and Moxley working Wrestle Kingdom 14 this past weekend.

“They both were successful. What did he call it? The forbidden door?” The forbidden door. It may be forbidden, but clearly the door is opening and closing and opening and closing. It’s public knowledge that some guys here, myself included, have exemptions to work New Japan Pro-Wrestling. But I know that New Japan Pro-Wrestling’s focus is New Japan and AEW’s focus is AEW.”

Rhodes continued by noting that it’s a partnership if made would see them share talent and creative but wouldn’t go down the path of an event like Super Clash III where Kerry Von Erich and Jerry Lawler were fighting over the title in 1988.

The reason for that belief is due to him being hesitant to combine banners versus just respecting each other’s banners.

“But I like how it’s referred to as the forbidden door. I don’t really think it’s forbidden at all.”

Rhodes stated that many people have the exemption to work there and praised NJPW for putting on a great Wrestle Kingdom as he thinks NJPW has amazing talent, particularly Will Ospreay.

Possible Timeline

“So, we’ll see where that goes. I know everyone pretty much feels the same about it. I think it’s something in the next year that we will hopefully all explore. We’ll explore on our end, they’ll explore on their end and we’ll see if it works.”

Tommy Dreamer – “I don’t think Edge is returning” To WWE

2

ECW Legend and co-host of Busted Open Radio Tommy Dreamer made some comments recently regarding WWE Hall of Famer Edge. There has been speculation that the ‘Rated-R Superstar’ might be returning to WWE at some point at 2020. During the most recent episode of Busted Open, Dreamer talked about his friend Edge and how he doesn’t believe that he is returning. Tommy Dreamer specifically talked about what would happen if Edge returned in the Royal Rumble match in the number 30 spot.

“I think the people would explode” Tommy Dreamer began, when discussing the reaction a returning Edge might get. Tommy’s co-host Dave LeGreca posed the idea of Edge not only returning but being the one to eliminate Brock Lesnar (who is entering Number 1) and win the bout. “Then you’d have all your naysayers saying Edge JUST did that, now he’s going to the main event [of WrestleMania].” Dreamer replied. “You know Edge…listen, I’m friends with the guy I don’t think Edge is returning. He is feeling good, he’s doing a lot of outside projects. If Edge did come back it would be an amazing amazing thing. It’s just I don’t know if he’d want to risk his health and overall well being. “

“now he’s in the main event right away” – Tommy Dreamer

Dreamer finished by saying “again the naysayers would claim ‘he came in at thirty. [he] Eliminated Brock, now he’s in the main event right away. It’s the ‘Yay’ and I’m saying five seconds later everyone [would be] hating it. This is supposed to be your babyface going for the title.”

Edge denies the reports

Edge himself recently refuted the reports that he was close to a WWE return. The former WWE Champion has appeared to be making moves that could point to an in-ring return at some point. Edge was spotted in Pittsburgh back in October, where the head of WWE’s medical department Dr. Joseph Maroon is headquartered. Although back in December Edge did take to Twitter to write “Still not and still not. Period.” The tweet alone did not make a lot of sense at the time. Pairing it with the renewed talk of his in-ring return and speculation over a possible Royal Rumble appearance makes it fairly clear that he is denying the reports about his status.

Steve Austin Praises Chris Jericho and Jushin ‘Thunder’ Liger

1

WWE Hall of Famer and Legend ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin made some interesting comments on the most recent episode of ‘The Steve Austin Show’ on PodcastOne regarding AEW Champion Chris Jericho. During the show Austin was discussing the Wrestle Kingdom event with his co-host for the episode Shawn Marek. Although Austin did not watch Wrestle Kingdom 14 at the time of recording he did have praise for two of the bigger performers who took part in this year’s Tokyo Dome extravaganza.

Jericho vs Tanahashi

Austin did mention that he planned on watching Chris Jericho against Hiroshi Tanahashi at some point. “I tryed to find the match on YouTube, all I could find was about three and a half four minutes of highlights” Austin began. “Looking at them I was like ‘well they definitely have some good **** in there.'”

“…[he] knows how to build a match” – Steve Austin

Stone Cold also talked about how Chris Jericho was one of the more intelligent performers he has known in the business. “You know he’s [Jericho] one of the more cerebral guys in the business. And as a student of the game, [he] knows how to build a match and so like there’s some really cool **** on there.”

Jushin Liger vs Brian Pillman

Steve Austin also had praise for the NJPW legend who retired this past weekend, Jushin ‘Thunder’ Liger. “I remember back in the day, it was ninety one ninety two ninety three at the latest…I can’t remember. This was WCW, the match with Brian Pillman. Okay that was a match of the year, go back and watch that match, it’s like twelve minutes. This is how much the the the business has changed, the stuff they were doing back then was cutting edge.”

Steve Austin also talked about the style of the Cruiserweight/Juniors performers, saying “I think they probably absorb the punishment and and the gravity and the physics better than the bigger guys. But I still know after all those years, all those bumps the high rate working style that he had back in the day; I mean he’s brought so much to the business.”

Eric Bischoff Comments On AEW Using Bash At The Beach Name

3

The January 15th, 2020 edition of AEW Dynamite is being branded as “Bash at the Beach.” The show from Miami has borrowed its name from a WCW PPV that ran from 1994 to 2000.

Former WCW President Eric Bischoff recently addressed AEW’s use of the Bash at the Beach name on a recent edition of his podcast.

“My first reaction was ‘that’s great!’ because it’s such a great, you know, it’s got such great history,” Bischoff said. “It’s a legacy within the wrestling community. When you say Bash at the Beach everyone knows what that is. Hulk Hogan turning heel – Bash at the Beach. So many things happened at Bash at the Beach. It was one of WCW’s tentpole PPVs and there was a lot of brand equity in that PPV brand. I was excited that somebody had the foresight to say ‘hey, this is available, take that!'”

Bischoff would continue to say that AEW needs to be its own brand, however.

“As long as they are doing enough other things to differentiate themselves, to truly present something that the audience recognizes as a real alternative and not kind of, sort of an alternative.”

“I would caution them to not do too many WCW legacy PPVs,” Bischoff continued.

He would continue to talk about how AEW does a great job of providing unique interviews and promos.

“They need to create their own unique, really cool branded events,” he continued.

Bischoff’s comments on AEW using the Bash at the Beach name can be heard in the player below:

Impact Wrestling Results & 8 Takeaways (1/7/20)

1

Impact Wrestling was back in their usual timeslot on Tuesday nights this week. This week’s show was the go-home edition for Sunday’s Hard to Kill PPV.

The show was headlined by Moose & Rob Van Dam teaming up against Brian Cage and Rhino. Impact this week would also feature a special look at the Hard to Kill main event of Sami Callihan vs Tessa Blanchard.

Impact Wrestling Results (Jan. 7)

  1. Michael Elgin defeated Eddie Edwards
  2. the Desi Hit Squad defeated TJP, Fallah Bah & Daga
  3. Havok defeated Rosemary
  4. ODB, Tenille Dashwood, & Jordynne Grace defeated Taya Valkyrie, Kiera Hogan & Madison Rayne
  5. Brian Cage & Rhino defeated Moose & Rob Van Dam

Here are 8 takeaways from Impact Wrestling 1/7:

A Special Look At Sami Callihan vs Tessa Blanchard At Hard To Kill

One of the biggest world championship matches in Impact Wrestling’s recent history takes place Sunday at Hard to Kill. Blanchard debuted with Impact Wrestling in the spring of 2018 and has steadily risen up the rankings ever since. Hard to Kill will be the 3rd time Callihan and Blanchard have met on Impact Wrestling. Callihan has won the first two.

A special look at both Sami Callihan and Tessa Blanchard aired this week on Impact Wrestling.

ODB Steals Win From Jordynne Grace

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvJ8D7gC064

At Hard to Kill, both ODB and Jordynne Grace have a chance to win Knockouts gold from Taya Valkyrie in a triple threat match. This week on Impact, ODB stole the pin on Taya away from Jordynne Grace. After Grace had delivered a second-rope Avalanche drop to the champion she was thrown out of the ring by ODB who then got the pin on Taya herself.

If OBD does the same thing on Sunday, she’ll walk away as the new Knockouts Champion.

Brian Cage & Rhino Defeat Rob Van Dam & Moose

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XyCQM-2eZRI

The night’s main event previewed 2 upcoming matches on Sunday’s PPV. Brian Cage will face Rob Van Dam in a dream match and Rhino and Moose will go one-on-one as well.

Rob Van Dam appears to be no longer doing his more popular moves as he does not want to give the fans what they want. He acted as though he was going to deliver Rolling Thunder at one point but then decided against it. Moose, however, attempted his own 5-star frog splash during the match, missed, and was promptly Gored by Rhino. Cage then hit Moose with a clothesline and pinned him to pick up the win for his team.

Havok Beats Rosemary As James Mitchell Continues To Manipulate “Suzie”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_HXI6g_X5gM

Father James Mitchell has been shown in backstage vignettes recently along with “Suzie” who appears to be the memory-restricted Su Yung. Rosemary has been attempting to stop Mitchell from continuing his association with Suzie.

This week on Impact, Mitchell locked Suzie in a closet while he accompanied Havok to the ring for her match against Rosemary. Suzie wandered to the ring during the match, however, prompting Mitchell to attempt to cover her ears and eyes. This distracted Rosemary who was then put in a tombstone piledriver by Havok for the win.

Johnny Swinger Put Somas In Joey Ryan’s Water

Swinger was shown backstage this week attempting to put Somas in Joey Ryan’s water bottle. Swinger was caught in the act by Tommy Dreamer and attempted to lie his way out of it. He told Dreamer it was his water bottle and he was just putting his medication in his water. Dreamer asked Swinger to drink the water to prove there was nothing too terrible in there but Swinger was reluctant. Dreamer then showed Swinger a kendo stick and Swinger took a big gulp from the Soma-infused water.

Later in the show, Swinger was shown passed out backstage. Joey Ryan and Petey Williams then debated drawing on his face with a sharpie. Swinger and Ryan will face each other next week in single’s action.

Michael Elgin and Eddie Edwards Don’t Wait Until Hard to Kill

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wt9pq1m0S7E

The show opened up this week with a brawl already in progress ringside between Eddie Edwards and Michael Elgin. Edwards said they don’t have to wait until Hard to Kill and an impromptu match between the two was booked.

Elgin would win the match with an Elgin bomb but these two will square off once again when Impact presents Hard to Kill on Sunday. The stipulations will be bigger on Sunday as well. Later in the show, Josh Matthews revealed that when Elgin and Edwards meet on the PPV, Edwards’ “Call Your Shot” trophy will be on the line.

The Desi Hit Squad defeated TJP, Fallah Bah & Daga

TJP and Fallah Bah joined forces with Daga this week in trios action against all 3 members of the Desi Hit Squad. Callis noted on commentary how well the Desi Hit Squad worked together under the guidance of the Great Gama Singh. Teamwork may have helped the faction but in the end, it was the brute strength of Mahabali Shera who would win the match with a power-bomb on TJP.

Drew McIntyre Reveals The Origin Of His Ring Name

0

Drew McIntyre recently participated in WWE’s new WWE Network series, Break It Down. Speaking directly to the camera, McIntyre—whose real last name is Galloway—recalled how he was presented with the surname ‘McIntyre’ when he first came back to WWE.

From Drew Galloway To Drew McIntyre

McIntyre remembered having a conversation with Michael Hayes and Stephanie McMahon. Stephanie asked whether Drew Galloway was actually his real name. Upon finding out that it was, she revealed that it may be something they needed to change despite the fact he was due in the ring within the next ten minutes.

“Stephanie McMahon says to myself and Michael Hayes, ‘Is Drew Galloway your real name?’ I said ‘Yeah’, and she’s ‘Oh…we might need to change that.’ And I’m on, legitimately, in about two matches, maybe 10 minutes max,” McIntrye said. “So myself and Michael Hayes ran straight to talent relations. He quickly told them bring up Wikipedia, a bunch of Scottish names. We went from ‘A’ all the way through.”

He continued, “I listened to these names with a very limited time frame to get a new name. As soon as I heard—it was ‘McDonald’ first, he liked—I went nope, I know a ‘Drew McDonald,’ can’t be him. I need three syllables. Fans have to chant when I’m good one day, and he said, ‘Mc-In-tyre’ and I said ‘McIntyre’. ‘Mc-In-tyre’. That’s the one.”

He then revealed how they rushed back to the Gorilla Position for him to ready himself for his match. They told the ring announcer his new name but, despite being announced as Drew McIntyre, the Superstar revealed if fans look at the titantron behind him, the video still shows snippets of ‘Drew Galloway’ on the screen.

The Miz On What Motivates Him, Who He Thinks Is Top Talent

1

WWE Superstar The Miz was a guest on this week’s episode of FS1’s WWE Backstage. He joined hosts Renee Young, Christian, Paige and WWE Hall of Famer Booker T. During the interview, Miz spoke about his continuous drive to be at the top of WWE. He also mentioned who he believes could be a top talent for the company.

The Miz On Wanting To Be “The Face” Of WWE

The Miz noted how he was not heavily featured in a string of recent SmackDown commercials. He explained how things like this fire him up to want to do better and work even harder: “I know I’m not the most talented guy,” Miz said. “I know I’m not, but I guarantee I will work harder than the most talented guy and my talents will shine through my hard work.”

He then reflected on what motivates him as a WWE Superstar. Miz admitted his ambition remains to be the “face” of WWE and compete for WWE’s “major” championships.

“What motivates me? What doesn’t motivate me? I think as a WWE Superstar, you’re always wanting to be the best. Whenever I see any type of NFL promotion of WWE SmackDown and I’m not the face, and I see Roman there…Granted, I love Roman Reigns, I think he does a tremendous job, but I want to be the face of WWE. Whether it’s SmackDown, whether it’s RAW, I want to be that guy.”

He continued, “I want to hold the major championships: the WWE Championship, the Universal Championship. There’s just something that thrives in me, and I think there’s a certain mentality that people have—that you need to have—in order to do that.”

Top Tier Talent And Entertaining Segments

When the conversation turned to who could become a solid main event player, Miz was succinct with his response, naming the recently returned Elias as his one to watch. He also shared that he enjoys watching fellow SmackDown Superstars Otis and Mandy Rose, claiming that his segments are his favorite thing on WWE TV at this point in time.

Miz also cut a promo during his time on WWE Backstage where he apparently took a jab at CM Punk. It didn’t take long for Punk to respond.

Tony Khan On His Father Taking A “Leap Of Faith” Into Pro Wrestling

0

All Elite Wrestling’s President Tony Khan recently joined the South Beach Sessions podcast. During the show, he was asked about when his father, Shahid “Shad” Khan, realized that AEW would be a success.

Tony Khan On His Father’s “Leap Of Faith”

Tony recalled how that moment didn’t occur until the promotion had launched. Up until that time, Shad had been working on a “leap of faith” based off of projections Tony provided him.

“I had to tell him, ‘I expect people are going to buy these PPVs, I expect we’re going to get this television deal, right now is the perfect time to start a wrestling company because of the abundance of talent that’s available.”

It wasn’t until Warner Media executive Kevin Reilly got involved that Shad was able to see the potential the existed within his son’s ideas.

Tony explained how “With Kevin coming in, my dad was of course interested because here’s the president of WarnerMedia, the president of these huge cable channels, TNT and TBS, so he’s showing some interest in this, so my dad’s I think thinking, ‘Okay well I probably should show up and show some interest in this,’ but he knew when that happened, ‘Okay, well if the networks are taking a look at this, then this must be a serious deal.’”

Creating An Alternative

Despite his initial scepticism and concerns, Tony Khan shared how his father’s leap of faith had paid off. Although Tony had his own worries, he believed in wrestling fans and the wrestling community. He thought the promotion would be the alternative that fans have been wanting and that AEW would “make people sit up and take notice.”

Since the launch of AEW, many have praised Khan’s efforts and vision. Jim Ross even referred to Khan as “the smartest young wrestling guy I’ve ever been around.”

Bully Ray Details Why CM Punk Should Return At Royal Rumble

4

This past Monday on RAW, Paul Heyman announced that his client, Brock Lesnar, would be participating in January’s Royal Rumble. Not only that, but he would be the Rumble’s first entrant. In the wake of the news, former WWE Superstar Bully Ray stressed the potential importance of the number thirty entrant. He has previously speculated over the narrative impact this person could have. Now, Bully Ray has broached the impact WWE could generate if it were a person from Heyman’s past: CM Punk.

Bully Ray On Why CM Punk Should Be #30

“I think that if there’s hope that surrounds any one wrestler more than anybody else, it’s him,” Bully Ray said. “[…] even though he keeps pro wrestling at more than an arm’s length, I think that fans everywhere hope to see him back.”

He continued, “And the only reason I’m suggesting CM Punk is not for the shock value of him being the surprise entrant. It’s for the story that it could present for Brock. Check this out: Brock is standing by himself, end of the match. He ran the gamut, everybody’s out, who the hell is going to be number thirty? Punk’s music hits. The place is going to go absolutely bats—t crazy.”

Bully Ray added to his theory, heightening the drama of his proposed idea. He suggested how “Punk enters the ring, Punk and Brock Lesnar are face-to-face. That hard camera shot shows you them face-to-face, and splitting right in the middle is the look of horror, Paul Heyman looking like Kevin from Home Alone with that look of horror on his face.”

Bully Ray concluded by stressing the idea of a WrestleMania main event matchup between a returning CM Punk against Brock Lesnar. He highlighted how invested fans would be in such a confrontation, and that the interest would be big business for WWE.

Ric Flair Issues High Praise To WWE Superstar

6

Ric Flair has issued some high-rise upon his soon-to-be son-in-law, Andrade. The WWE Hall of Famer took to Twitter to share his thoughts on the WWE United States Champion. He declared that after this past Monday’s episode of RAW, the Superstar has “Moved Into The Elite Class Of Being One Of The Top 5 Performers In The WWE!”

Ric Flair’s Elite Class

Flair shared how the other four Superstars already “Know Who They Are.” He revealed he has already spoken to them. For “The Nature Boy,” his top five rankings aren’t simply speculation, they’re fact. Ric Flair accompanied his thoughts with a picture of Andrade looking lovingly at his WWE US Championship. In the image, he is flanked by his manager, Zelina Vega.

“After Last Night’s RAW, In My Opinion, The Great @AndradeCienWWE Has Moved Into The Elite Class Of Being One Of The Top 5 Performers In The WWE! The Other 4 Know Who They Are Because I Have Already Told Them. This Isn’t Up For Speculation. This Is A Fact!”

Andrade’s Ambitions

Andrade recently shared his intentions to becomes the “new face” of Latinos. He noted how he is working towards securing his own personal legacy—one that respects and acknowledges those notable Latino Superstars before him but is distinctly his own. He proposed over the holidays to his now-fiancee, Charlotte Flair.

Ember Moon Details How She Suffered Her Achilles Injury

0

Ember Moon has revealed how she suffered her unfortunate Achilles injury back in September 2019. The SmackDown Superstar caught up with Booker T on an episode of his podcast, The Hall of Fame, where she addressed the situation that led to her injury—one that involved the WWE 24/7 Championship.

Ember Moon’s Championship Chase

Moon recalled being asked by WWE to take part in a “24/7 title run” as Carmella had won the championship the night before. She admitted that she was fine with being a part of the segment, but confessed that she had a “bad feeling” going into it. Being a self-confessed team player, however, Moon was still willing to take part.

“We do the run through and I told Truth, I was like, ‘Truth, you better run, I’m gonna catch you, Truth. If I catch you, I’m tackling you and you’re going down.’ And so when we actually did it, I literally caught them right before we went through the curtain,” she said. “So they go through the curtain and they didn’t realize how close I was behind them. As I’m coming through, the curtain shuts, I open it, go through. Truth is dropping Carmella and I’m going full speed and I had to hit the brakes. I was just like, ‘whoah,’ BOOM, and I felt a pop.”

Whislt rehabbing and recovering away from in-ring competition, Ember Moon revealed during a previous appearance on WWE Backstage that she has accepted a coaching opportunity. Moon has been away from the ring dealing with this injury since her last television appearance on the September 23rd episode of Monday Night RAW.

Matt Hardy Addresses Brand Status

0

Matt Hardy has directly addressed his current brand status in WWE. Responding to a Twitter question, the Superstar described his current as “Matt Hardy in LIMBO.” He also pointed out how, despite appearing on RAW, he was never officially a part of that roster.

“Ever since I returned last February, I’ve been listed on the #SmackDown roster. When I performed on #RAW in November & December, I wasn’t ever officially put on RAW roster. Saw several websites suggesting I’d switched roster pages, but not the case. Call me Matt Hardy in LIMBO”

Matt Hardy’s RAW Return

After an extended period away from in-ring action, Matt Hardy returned to the ring on RAW. Upon his return, many fans were surprised to see him wearing attire reminiscent of his time in Team Xtreme alongside Lita and his brother, Jeff Hardy.

Despite a swell of excitement following his initial comeback, Hardy was, unfortunately, able to accrue much momentum on his time on the red brand, losing matches week after week.

Serving Two Masters

In a recent episode of Thoughts form the Throne, Matt Hardy spoke about how wrestlers and promoters now have to serve “two masters.” He highlighted how the industry now has to appeal to both the diehard fan and the casual fan. It is an approach he has embraced, admitting that he is “trying to cater to both.”

CM Punk Blasts The Miz Over WWE Backstage Remarks

14

It looks like CM Punk wasn’t very happy with some remarks from the Miz made during the latest episode of WWE Backstage. The self proclaimed ‘Best In The World; blasted the A-Lister over his comments on the show in his latest ‘pipe bomb’ attack.

The Miz was the special guest on the WWE series this week and he cut a promo on his appearance while talking to the camera as the filming for the show was wrapping up.

However interestingly, towards the end of the promo, the former World Champion apparently took a shot at CM Punk after asking Renee Young if there was any better episode of WWE Backstage:

“Oh yeah, we are now done with WWE Backstage, they are taking the microphones off me. It was great, it was amazing. I feel like this was the best WWE Backstage episode ever. Oh, sorry. I didn’t ‘change the culture,’ my bad. my bad.”

The WWE on Fox twitter account later posted a clip of this promo on Twitter. CM Punk responded to it with a tweet of his own and in the response which has since been deleted, he told the WWE star to “go suck a blood money covered d**k in Saudi Arabia”:

CM Punk blasted The Miz

Though this tweet wasn’t online for very long and it seems that the WWE on Fox account has taken down their post featuring the video of the promo as well.

For those who don’t know, CM Punk made a surprise appearance on WWE Backstage during the closing moments of the November 12th episode last year.

He cut a short promo during the appearance saying “It’s as simple as this, just when they think they’ve got the answers, I change the culture.”

There have been no response from any other guests of WWE Backstage on the matter and it would be interesting to know what Fox officials think about Punk’s comments.

The Young Bucks Reveal Their Dream Match

3

The Young Bucks are considered to be one of the top tag teams in the wrestling world right now but surprisingly, one of their dream matches is not a regular tag team bout.

The duo recently appeared on ESPN West Palm where they talked about a number of things and the team of Matt Jackson and Nick Jackson also revealed their dream matches.

Nick Jackson was the first to respond to the question about the same and he explained that he would like to see a 6 men tag team match between Young Bucks & Kenny Omega and The New Day:

“Off the top of my head, I would say The Elite versus New Day because that was something that was actually close to happening at one point, but it just never happened but I think if that six-man would’ve happened, it would’ve tore the house down,”

Matt Jackson then responded to the question as well and he revealed that his dream match would be between the brothers and the Revival.

Explaining the reason behind this, Matt claimed that he feels like there is some real-life tension between the two teams and he doesn’t know if it’s competitive or friendly.

What will be your dream match involving the AEW Vice Presidents? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below.

WWE Reportedly Signs Mae Young Classic Competitor

0

WWE has signed former Ring Of Honor star and former Mae Young Classic competitor Mercedes Martinez to a contract, according to SoCal UNCENSORED.

Martinez has been active in the wrestling world from the past couple of decades and she first started training for an in-ring career in late 2000.

She made her debut in November that year and the female star went on to wrestle for a number of indie promotions in England and America in the coming years.

Her first big break came in 2006 when she made her debut for Ring Of Honor on March 25 where she competed in a Shimmer sanctioned match.

She was brought in by WWE for the inaugural Mae Young Classic tournament where she made it to the semi-finals before being eliminated by Shayna Baszler.

Since then, Mercedes has made a number of appearances for the company on the NXT brand and she competed in the second Mae Young Classic tournament as well.

It’s interesting to note here that Mercedes Martinez has also made appearances for AEW recently and she made her debut for the promotion during the All Out event, where she was revealed as the ‘Joker’ in the second Casino Battle Royale.

No word yet on when Martinez will start her tenure with WWE or what the company is planning for her but we’ll keep you posted on the matter.
