IWGP Junior Heavyweight Number 1 Contender Named

0

Taiji Ishimori has emerged as the new number 1 contender to the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship. The Bullet Club member attacked current Champion KUSHIDA with a crutch following his tag team bout loss. Ishimori was using the crutch due to his previously diagnosed ankle injury on November 1st.

NJPW confirmed via their English language site NJPW1972.com on 11/01 that “Taiji Ishimori will not participate in the event in Shizuoka at the Twin Messe Shizuoka South Building today. Thursday November 1st, due to a left ankle injury. This happened during the event in Nagano on October 31st.”

After the attack Ishimori cut a short promo. He confirmed that he was next in line for an IWGP Junior Heavyweight title shot.

The Bullet Club member was revealed as the new BONE SOLDIER earlier this year. He has been setting the Junior division on fire ever since. Ishimori has also competed in this year’s Best of the Super Juniors tournament, he gained 5 wins and 2 loses in the tournament and advanced to the finals. Taiji came up short in the BOSJ as he lost to Hiromu Takahashi in the final.

Highlights of Chris Jericho’s Recent IWGP Intercontinental Title Defence

1

Chris Jericho returned to New Japan Pro Wrestling at the Power Struggle event in Osaka, Japan. The IWGP Intercontinental Champion defended successfully against EVIL after locking him in a Walls of Jericho that transitioned into a Liontamer.

After the match concluded, Jericho continued to attack EVIL, putting him back into the submission hold until Naito ran in to save his LIJ teammate. Jericho escaped and began to leave, but not before he teased a match between the two, indicating to an inevitable confrontation between himself and Naito for the belt.

It is likely that Jericho will now go on to face Tetsuya Naito for the IC Title at Wrestle Kingdom. There is also a strong possibility that Jericho appears at the Madison Square Garden event for New Japan over WrestleMania weekend next year so the bout could happen there. Either way this is a huge bout for Naito in terms of mainstream appeal. This could help propel the Los Ingobernable leader to greater heights in New Japan.

Check out some of the highlights from the bout below. These include a hellacious table spot, a vicious chair-brace into the corner post and an sharp snap Codebreaker from Y2J.

NJPW Teasing an Okada/Tanahashi Alliance

1

NJPW has recently been adding more English language content to their YouTube channel. One of the new web series entitled ‘The Wire’ has posed an intriguing question to the fans of New Japan. Will Hiroshi Tanahashi and Kazuchika Okada form an alliance?

‘The Ace’ of New Japan Tanahashi broke up an attack by the Firing Squad on Okada at the ‘Road To’ Power Struggle event on October 27th. Tanahashi stormed the ring and attacked Jay White, Tanga Loa and Bad Luck Fale. Tama Tonga then joined in the fray and got taken down by a double back elbow by Okada and Tanahashi.

The Okada/Tanahashi feud is one of the most pivotal in New Japan’s history. The two men have had some incredible matches in the past. Okada stated in a recent backstage interview that “shaking hands (with Tanahashi) was…friendly. I guess, for the first time, Tanahashi has finally made a friend. But, that doesn’t mean we are going to team up. But, let me thank you for helping me this time.

Tanahashi also made some interesting comments, stating that “Even I don’t know what is going to happen. Pro Wrestling is…not only about betrayal.

Matt Riddle Really Wants To Retire Brock Lesnar

4

“The Beast” Brock Lesnar returned last night at WWE’s Crown Jewel event, becoming the first ever two-time WWE Universal Champion in the process by defeating Braun Strowman in controversial fashion.

Though many fans were unhappy with the outcome – and the scenario that led up to it – there is one person who couldn’t be happier that Brock Lesnar is not only back, but has reclaimed the Universal Championship.

That man? The King of Bros, Matt Riddle.

Riddle, himself a former UFC fighter, took to Twitter in order thank Lesnar for returning and giving him the opportunity to try and accomplish what he’s wanted for a surprisingly long time: retire Brock Lesnar.

His Tweet read, “Thank you Brock for coming back and winning the universal title! You’re right where I need you bro,” which is a clear statement of intent over Riddle’s future goals.

Having only just successfully debuted for NXT, Matt Riddle has even set himself an ambitious timeframe to work towards, stating that he intends to “retire you [Lesnar] in a few years.”

This isn’t the first time the King of Bros has spoken about facing Brock Lesnar. On a recent edition of “The Ariel Helwani MMA Show” he said the following:

“In my perfect world I’m champion in like, three months,” Riddle said. “And then I’m on the main roster and I’m challenging Brock Lesnar. And I want to retire Brock Lesnar. That’s the perfect world. Maybe Brock Lesnar, main event [at] WrestleMania for the Universal Title, and if he loses he retires.”

It’s good to have goals.

Is this a match you’d like to see? Who would win if it were to go down? Can you see Matt Riddle being the one to retire Lesnar?

Shawn Michaels Hints That His In-Ring Return Was A One Time Thing

8

Frequently referred to as Mr. Wrestlemania, Shawn Michaels developed a star-studded career filled with top-tier clashes against some of the very best of the business. Then, in 2010, he retired after losing to The Undertaker at Wrestlemania XXVI.

Last night, HBK made his in-ring return at WWE’s Crown Jewel event. However, it may have been more of a one-and-done situation rather than the reigniting of a career that has lain dormant for eight years.

In a post-match video for WWE.com, The Heartbreak Kid reflected on his tag match. He spoke about how “this whole day I’ve been anxious and nerves and everything. Once I got in there though, it was fun, it was comfortable. Y’know, I did a few things, got a little warm and you forget just how tough this is on your body. I’ll be feeling it for the next several days.”

He then hinted that his return to the ring may have been a one time deal, reflecting that “[…] it’ll be a very good reminder of why I didn’t do it for eight years and why I’m not going to do it again if I can possibly help it.”

Looking to the future, Shawn said, “Monday night, Shawn is back at the P.C. We’re going back to our regular life, boys. It was a lot of fun to do, but I’m glad it’s over, too.”

What do you make of this? Was this match worth Shawn coming out of retirement? Does he have one more run in him? Is that something you would want to see?

New Japan Pro Wrestling is on the road to Wrestle Kingdom 13, but before we get to their premier event in January, there’s still the World Tag League, the Road To Tokyo Dome shows, and today’s NJPW Power Struggle event to enjoy.

Power Struggle took place in Osaka’s Edion Arena, Osaka, Japan.

Bullet Club (Robbie Eagles, Tama Tonga, & Tanga Loa) defeated Great Bash Heel (Togi Makabe & Tomoaki Honma) & KUSHIDA via pinfall.

The win came in typical Bullet Club fashion, with Jado and a supposedly injured Taiji Ishimori interfering in the match. Isihomori nailed KUSHIDA with his crutch; one Gun Stun later and the Bullet Club were victorious.

Ishimori proceeded to hold the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight title, clearly stating his intentions for championship gold.

CHAOS (Beretta & Kazuchika Okada) defeated Bullet Club (Bad Luck Fale & “Switchblade” Jay White) via pinfall.

Beretta slipped out of an attempted Bad Luck Fall, which led to a pinning opportunity over Bad Luck Fale.

After the match concluded, Jericho continued to attack EVIL, putting him back into the submission hold until Naito ran in to save his LIJ teammate. Naito got on the mic and officially challenged Jericho for the IWGP Intercontinental Championship to close out the show.

Gail Kim Calls WWE Management “Racist”

55

Several wrestling personalities have given their thoughts on WWE recently. Impact Wrestling producer, Gail Kim, is no different. Last night, Kim said the reason WWE isn’t concerned about bringing back Hulk Hogan after having made racist remarks is that they are racist themselves.

https://twitter.com/gailkimITSME/status/1058520486039183360?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1058520486039183360&ref_url=http%3A%2F%2Fwrestlingnews.co%2Fwwe-news%2Fgail-kim-rips-racist-wwe-management-for-bringing-back-hulk-hogan%2F

She would later respond to someone who refuted the WWE is racist claim:

Kim then took a shot at a media outlet for misconstruing her remarks, leading this media outlet to be a little nervous about posting this article now:

It seems as though the outlet misconstrued Gail Kim’s comments. She was saying WWE is racist and therefore don’t mind that Hogan made racist comments not that WWE is racist as a result of having brought back Hogan after he made racist comments.

Gail Kim – Impact Wrestling

The Knockouts Division in Impact Wrestling is arguably the most talked about division in the company at the moment. Tessa Blanchard’s Knockouts title reign has drawn significant interest from fans. While controversial, the Allie/Su Yung/Kiera Hogan program has been praised by fans who enjoy that newly developing style of sports entertainment.

A controversial finish to the Bound For Glory rematch between Blanchard and Taya Valkyrie this week will likely lead to a third match somewhere down the road.

Natalya Describes The Mood Backstage During Roman Reigns’ Announcement

0

Natalya writes a weekly article for the Calgary Sun. It’s a tradition her Uncle Bret began a generation ago. This week, Natalya wrote about the mood backstage at the Raw when Roman Reigns announced he is battling Leukemia.

“Backstage, our world stood still,” Natalya wrote. “We all were watching the monitor and hugging one another, crying and in total disbelief.  To me, Roman Reigns was WWE’s version of Superman and he was our locker room leader on Raw. I thought back to how hard he worked to realize his dream to win the Universal Championship from Brock Lesnar and it made me sad to think everything now needed to be put on hold for him to battle this horrible disease.”

Natalya On Roman Reigns

Natalya’s article continued to refer to Roman Reigns as the locker room’s “Superman”.

“And a week later here I am, still thinking about what Roman said and what he is going through. I’m reminded that life is fragile and no one is guaranteed anything.  Roman reminded me that we can aspire to inspire others and lead by example. I thought about all of the children I’ve visited who were struggling with cancer who needed a hero and someone to remind them to keep fighting, dreaming and believing.”

Ronda Rousey Tops PWI Top 100 Female Wrestlers List

5

Pro Wrestling Illustrated released their top-100 list of women wrestlers recently. As per usual, the list is filled with controversy. The #1 ranked female wrestler in the world according to PWI in 2018 was Ronda Rousey. Despite only ever having wrestled in 25 matches, the magazine ranked Ronda Rousey as better than any other female in the world.

“That’s absolutely incredible,” Rousey said on the phone to PWI. “I don’t really know how to react to that. I mean, I really appreciate it.”

Ronda would admit she’s not certain her 6 months in the business is enough to have earned the honor, “I don’t know how much I deserve it, but, wow. Thank you.”

PWI said that while she hasn’t wrestled much and has only been an active wrestler for 6 months, the impact she has had in that time is significant enough to earn her the #1 spot.

Rousey continued to tell PWI about how happy she is in her WWE career.

“Honestly, coming into this I expected all the fans and everyone in the locker room to hate my guts from day one,” Rousey said. “I really did. I was really blindsided by how accepting and amazing everyone has been and how amazing the WWE Universe has been, how amazing everybody in the back has been. I’m really not here for a quick paycheck or some extra fame or anything like that, honestly. I just really love this and I really want to contribute as much as I can, I don’t want to take credit for the Women’s Evolution.”

Ronda Rousey PWI 100

Top-10:

  1. Ronda Rousey
  2. Alexa Bliss
  3. Charlotte Flair
  4. Io Shirai
  5. Asuka
  6. Shayna Baszler
  7. Carmella
  8. Nia Jax
  9. Mayu Iwatani
  10. Kairi Sane

The heavily WWE-influenced top-10 will likely cause much debate. The only non-WWE wrestler in the top-10 is Mayu Iwatani from Stardom. The Knockouts division in Impact Wrestling and the Women of Honor division seem to be completely ignored at the top of this list, surprising considering the historical role Impact’s women’s division has had over the years.

Brock Lesnar Wins Universal Championship, Sets Up Match at Survivor Series

8

Brock Lesnar is once again the WWE Universal champion. What was originally expected to be a triple threat match, Lesnar ended up in a one-on-one showdown with Bruan Strowman to determine a new champion after Roman Reigns was forced to surrender the belt following the revelation that his battle with leukemia was happening again after going into remission several years ago.

With Reigns out of the match, the WWE moved forward with a singles contest between Lesnar and Strowman.

All signs seemed to point towards Strowman finally ascending to the top of the WWE Raw roster with Lesnar expected to return to the UFC in early 2019 to compete for the heavyweight championship.

That plan may still very well happen but for now Lesnar is champion again after a very short match with Strowman on Friday.

In a carbon copy to many of Lesnar’s most dominant victories in WWE, he landed several ‘F-5’s on Strowman including one where he tossed the behemoth outside the ring. Finally, Lesnar landed one final F-5 that put Strowman down and out.

Lesnar was crowned WWE Universal champion and then just a few moments later his next match was officially announced.

At WWE Survivor Series on Sunday, Nov. 18, Lesnar will return to the ring to face current WWE heavyweight champion A.J. Styles from Smackdown Live.

Obviously, Lesnar is sticking around WWE longer than anyone expected with his plans to return to the UFC in 2019. There’s still plenty of time for the title to change hands before Lesnar would return to the Octagon.

There are also rumors that Lesnar may make a surprise appearance at UFC 230 in New York on Saturday night where Cormier defends his heavyweight title against Derrick Lewis in the main event but nothing has been confirmed as of yet.

Shane McMahon Wins WWE World Cup At Crown Jewel

15

The winner of WWE’s World Cup has been crowned…and it’s Shane McMahon. After a gruelling tournament between some of WWE’s best Superstars and Legends the Commissioner of Smackdown Live has taken the trophy.

Shane entered himself in the finals of the tournament after original Smackdown finalist Miz couldn’t compete. The final was set to be Miz versus Dolph Ziggler, a fairly odd choice to begin with. The Miz seemed to positioned as a heroic babyface, stating that he could compete and had “never been injured.”

Miz and Dolph started the bout after Ziggler’s ‘bodyguard’ Drew McIntyre was ejected from the ring. Miz was quickly taken down outside of the ring with a suspected ankle injury, he protested until he was declared unfit to compete. Shane McMahon opted to interject himself in the match before the referee declared Ziggler the winner.

McMahon took the win after hitting his Coast to Coast dropkick on Ziggler in the corner. WWE referred to Shane as the ‘Best in the World’ following the win and McMahon celebrated with the trophy. It was a very odd end to the World Cup tournament, completely surreal.

Shawn superkicks Undertaker and Kane, and HHH hits the Pedigree on Kane for the three count.

Winners: Shawn Michaels and Triple H

– Shawn Michaels appears to be bleeding lightly from a couple of spots on his face. HHH and Shawn recover in the corner as we go to replays. HHH and Shawn raise their hands in the ring as fireworks go off above the arena and Crown Jewel goes off the air.

AJ Styles Joins Exclusive WWE Club

4

The Phenomenal One, AJ Styles, has joined a rare, exclusive club. This club is filled with a very specific type of Superstar and features a litany of WWE Hall Of Famers, so the Georgia native couldn’t be in better company.

As of yesterday, November 1st, AJ Styles reached a new milestone by maintaining his championship status for 359 days. This has seen him officially place amongst the Top 10 longest reigning champions in WWE history, as documented by WWE.com.

Having won the belt back in November 2017 against Jinder Mahal during a SmackDown LIVE event in Manchester, England, AJ has been able to fend off all comers and challengers for the championship, solidifying his place in the main event and firmly establishing SmackDown as the “House That AJ Styles Built.”

Styles is scheduled to defend his WWE Championship at today’s Crown Jewel event, emanating from Saudi Arabia, in a matchup against Samoa Joe. If successful, this will see him continue to climb the ranks as his days as champion continue to accumulate.

All of that could change, however, in just a few short hours, especially if Samoa Joe gets his way.

AJ Styles, You Just Made The List

Here are the Top 10 Longest-Reigning WWE Champions of all time:

JBL Shares His Thoughts On The Problem With Modern-Day Heels

10

The oft-outspoken John Bradshaw Layfield has never been one to shy away from controversy or an opportunity to share his opinion, especially on a subject he’s so knowledgeable and passionate about.

Speaking recently with Busted Open Radio, the former WWE Champion offered his thoughts on the issue with modern-day heels in the industry.

JBL believes that it’s “easier now than ever [to be a heel], but the guys have got to stay in character. […] we stayed in character 24/7. People would think you’re a horrible person, but you don’t want to see a guy at the airport, and smile, and be friendly.”

He admits that this outlook – one that happens to be shared by Chris Jericho – is an “old school mentality,” before explaining, “People don’t like it anymore, but it’s what we did and you didn’t want them coming to the arena and saying, ‘Hey, I met that guy – he’s actually a really good guy,’ and tell everyone around him because that’s what they’ll do. You want people to think you’re this bad guy. You live this character 24/7.”

A Social (Media) Issue

Attempting to pinpoint contributing factors to the issue, JBL highlighted social media as a major reason for this break in heel dynamics.

“I would see these guys trying to be heels and right after some dastardly deed on Monday Night RAW or SmackDown, they quote a bible verse and say how great it is to help people on social media,” he said.

“You’re killing yourself because these same people who follow you on social media are the same ones that watch you on Monday Night RAW and SmackDown, and they’re the ones out there saying, ‘you know, he’s really a good guy; I like him; he’s a good heel.’ If somebody tells you, ‘you’re a good heel,’ you have failed miserably. If you’re selling t-shirts as a heel, you’re selling them, then you’ve failed miserably. If you have a heel section, then you’ve failed miserably.”

What do you make of JBL’s thoughts? Is there a problem with modern-day heels? Is social media to blame?

NJPW Reportedly Offering Big Money Deals To WWE Talent

7

Usually WWE is the company poaching talent from other promotions, but it appears New Japan Pro Wrestling is going on the offensive.

New Japan has been aggressively increasing its presence in the West over the past few years, hoping to grow a larger fanbase amongst American fans. A whole new audience is being exposed to New Japan’s brand of “strong style” wrestling. Another big step in that effort would be acquiring WWE talent that fans are familiar with.

According Dave Meltzer, NJPW has been reaching out to WWE’s wrestlers in an effort to lure them away with comparable money for fewer dates.

“There were some offers that have been made to some guys in WWE that surprised me in the sense of how much they could make outside of WWE,” Meltzer said, before adding, “One person who is there [in the WWE] got an offer for ridiculous money for way less dates and it very much surprised me. This would be one of the top guys in WWE. New Japan is weird but they are willing to pay real big money, like they did with [Chris] Jericho.”

No specific names were mentioned during his observations, but rumors are rife with names such as current US Heavyweight Champion, Shinsuke Nakamura, Karl Anderson, and Luke Gallows – all of whom have been previously associated with NJPW in the past and that many fans believe have been grossly underutilized during their time with WWE.

What do you think of this? Do you feel they’ve been misused in the WWE? Who would you like to see get signed to NJPW?

All In 2: Latest On Future Events From Cody & The Young Bucks

5

Earlier this week, Cody Rhodes addressed rumors of him returning to WWE and the future of the All In brand. On board the Jericho cruise, Cody assured the crowd that he will not be returning to WWE in 2019. He also promised to do everything in his power to make All In 2 a reality.

According to the Wrestling Observer, there has been talk of holding two All In events in 2019. The Observer report says the next All In event would likely take place place over a holiday weekend somewhere on the West Coast. We’ve heard more specific details than this which are consistent with this report.

Cody, The Young Bucks and the other organizers of All In 2 might have to proceed without the support of Sinclair and Ring of Honor. Not only did a lot of Ring of Honor performers work the show, but Sinclair was instrumental in providing crucial logistical support. ROH VP of Operations Gary Juster has been hailed as a “behind-the-scenes MVP” of All In. Juster, a former WCW executive, taught the crew about the inner workings of running a major live event.

Will Ring of Honor be involved in future All In events? That seems unlikely. The company’s relationship with ROH will be very different come January. For much more on that situation, check out our exclusive report on what’s next for Cody and The Young Bucks.

Update On Johnny Impact And Austin Aries, Was It All A Work?

1

In the build-up to Bound For Glory, the line between reality and fiction was blurred. As it turns out, even management wasn’t entirely sure how much was fact and how much was fiction.

According to a report from the Wrestling Observer, Impact and Aries decided to run with a social media angle without the company’s permission.

“The twitter stuff was actually Aries and John Morrison trying to work their own angle and making it personal with Aries calling Taya husky,” Dave Meltzer wrote. “Management wasn’t happy with that because they don’t want people working angles they aren’t appraised of, because it could contradict where they are going.”

Austin Aries’ “Loose Cannon” Gimmick

Aries is said to have suffered a mild concussion during his match at Bound For Glory. He was sent home from the New York tapings the following day.

“On the Austin Aries thing, as noted last week, his contract has expired but the company is very high on him,” Meltzer continued. “My sense is he’ll be back and there’s a lot of Brian Pillman stuff in what he’s been doing.”

The Aries vs Impact match itself appeared to be quite stiff. Early moments in the match indicated the two were trying to make the bout look as real as possible. Aries then no-sold the finish to the match and flipped off Don Callis before leaving the arena.

Don Callis also commented on the worked-shoot/unplanned parts of the angle on his podcast, Killin the Town.

“Effectively we had an issue earlier in the week with some Tweets between talent. They were told to take those Tweets down,” Callis said. “Things got a little heated at the press conference. People said ‘Well, why didn’t this happen at the press conference if they were going to have a face-to-face?’ Well, because it wasn’t really planned. I’m just going to leave it at that.”
