Adam Pearce Explains What Makes Him An Effective WWE Producer

0

WWE producer Adam Pearce recently did an interview with The George Tragos/Lou Thesz Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame. He will sever as the Master Of Ceremonies for the 20th Annual PWHOF Induction Banquet on July 26th, 27th and 28th from Waterloo, Iowa. Below are some of the highlights:

How did you get interested in professional wrestling?

“I watched wrestling as a kid, mostly AWA television before my family got cable and I was able to see the WWF and NWA products that were available nationwide. I always enjoyed it.”

What’s it like to have a display of your gear at the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum during the 70-year anniversary of the National Wrestling Alliance, which was formed in Waterloo, Iowa?

“It’s an honor. I was lucky to spend two decades performing, and a big chunk of that time was as NWA champion. To have some of my ‘relics’ on display in Waterloo – stuff I wore as NWA champion – is somewhat surreal.”

What’s the difference between a good professional wrestler and a superstar?

“Worldwide exposure. Of course I could say the ‘it factor,’ but that only gets one so far. Someone with means has to see that and want to exploit it, and only then can you go to the next level.

“There are a lot of good professionals that may be missing one thing here or there, but if you’re missing the means to get your wares in front of a global audience, it’s next to impossible to claim true superstardom.”

Professional wrestling is a fluid business. What do fans really want?

“I suppose you’d have to ask fans! Pop Culture changes with time, and with it, tastes in the arts change. I think wrestling follows suit. There have been many different ‘stylistic tides’ in our business, and they are ever changing—just as in television, music, and the like due to the fluidity you mentioned.

“One thing I think is constant, that I’ve never seen change, is that fans want someone to cheer and someone to boo. And there is the simple answer to how our business really works. Give the fans someone to love and give them the opposite and put them together. It’s magic.”

What makes you an effective producer for WWE?

“First of all, I’m able to successfully follow AND give directions. That may sound weird, but my primary job as a producer is to bring the vision on paper to life. In order to do that, I have to understand that vision and make sure I know what exactly it is that I’m charged with bringing to life. Once I have my marching orders, it’s all about communication.

“I have to make others see and understand that same vision, helping them find a way to physically make it a reality. That takes ingenuity and creativity and a working knowledge of the techniques used to make it all go ’round. From there, it’s also my job to effectively communicate to our camera operators and directors what we’re doing (and more importantly where and when).

“Only when every facet of what I described is executed successfully can I be considered an effective producer. Thankfully, that happens more often than not.”

AJ Styles Approaching Big Milestone As WWE Champion

9

AJ Styles is closing in on a significant milestone as WWE Champion.

As of this writing, Styles has been WWE Champion for 243 days. This is his second title reign, during which he’s defended the title 59 times, with only 7 defenses on television / pay-per-view since November.

Including his previous run with the title, Styles has been WWE Champion for a total of 383 days. Should he remain champion through next week, Styles will surpass WWE Hall of Famer Shawn Michaels’ career record of 396 days.

The next milestone for Styles after surpassing Shawn Michaels’ record would be CM Punk’s 463 days as WWE Champion.

Of course, the man who was WWE Champion more days than anyone else in history is the late Bruno Sammartino, who held the title for a staggering 4,040 days (11+ years) during his illustrious career.

AJ Styles is slated to make his next title defense against Rusev at the upcoming Extreme Rules pay-per-view event on Sunday, July 15, 2018 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at the PPG Paints Arena.

How Many Matches Are Reportedly Left On Brock Lesnar’s WWE Contract

26

Brock Lesnar’s return to the UFC is imminent.

“The Beast” made his return to the mixed martial arts (MMA) world this past weekend (Sat. July 7, 2018) at UFC 226 and confronted newly crowned UFC heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier inside the Octagon. The pair had a shoving match before UFC President Dana White announced Lesnar will be Cormier’s next challenger for the UFC heavyweight title.

  • Full Coverage of Brock Lesnar’s Return to UFC

Lesnar is currently the WWE Universal Champion and will likely have to drop that strap before departing to the UFC for a potential title run. Jeremy Botter of Bleacher Report has reported that Lesnar will fight Cormier in November, likely at Madison Square Garden.

Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio subsequently reported that Lesnar is under contract with WWE through the end of August and only has one more match left on his deal.

It’s likely Lesnar drops the Universal Title at SummerSlam – with Roman Reigns being the front-runner for those honors- before shifting his focus to his training camp for Cormier.

Discussion: Do you think Lesnar will finally drop the Universal Title at SummerSlam?

Eric Bischoff Comments On Possible WWE Return

2

Former WCW President Eric Bischoff recently did an interview with the Sky Sports Lock Up podcast to talk about several professional wrestling topics. During the interview, Bischoff was asked about a potential return to WWE.

Bischoff served as the General Manager of Monday Night RAW from 2002 to 2005. Today he is loosely affiliated with WWE; making sporadic appearances on the WWE Network, having WWE DVD’s released about him and even appearing on RAW 25 earlier this year.

When asked on Lock Up if he would be open to a return to WWE, Bischoff said he’d be open to the idea if the situation worked out for everyone. He also voiced his interest in managing talent in a potential return:

“I would love to do it if it was a situation which would work for everybody, a character like mine, there is only so much you can do from a storyline perspective. You can be that heel authority figure which I was for a few years in WWE and WCW, and it’s interesting and it’s fun but after a while you’ve kind of done everything you can do creatively.

“I’m pretty realistic about the value my character has now. I’d like to manage someone, a young talent that maybe doesn’t have the mic skills. I think that would be fun because I can still get heat.”

You can listen to Bischoff on Sky Sports’ Lock Up podcast by clicking this link here.

Al Snow: Steve Austin Revitalized Wrestling In The Late ’90s

2

Former WWE Superstar Al Snow recently did an interview with Hannibal TV to talk about several professional wrestling topics. During the interview, Snow commented on WWE Hall Of Famer Stone Cold Steve Austin and what he has done for the business.

Snow told Hannibal TV that he believes “The Texas Rattlesnake” really revitalized professional wrestling when he was hot in the late ’90s:

“I’ve wrestled Steve. I wrestled him in a school I had out in Lima Ohio. Steve, he’s an awesome individual. I can’t say enough awesome things about Steve. As far as his place in history I think it’s pretty obvious he’s right up there. There’s not many that can be much bigger than Steve Austin.

“He really completely single-handily revitalized wrestling in the late-90’s and early 2000’s. If it hasn’t been for Steve and Vince McMahon we wouldn’t have enjoyed the boom we had at that time. Again, he was the catalyst there. He created that crossover and made it such a mainstream phenomenon.”

Dolph Ziggler Talks Winning Intercontinental Title Six Times, Working With Drew McIntyre

1

Dolph Ziggler has reflected on what he has accomplished as a member of the WWE roster.

The current WWE Intercontinental Champion recently appeared on “Chasing Glory with Lilian Garcia” to talk about various topics including what being Intercontinental Champion six times means to him.

Ziggler noted that in the past, he felt that he didn’t get these chances that other people get but after all of the achievements in his career, he has a different mindset as he is glad to get the opportunity.

“We don’t always follow up on them, but that’s part of the business and sometimes you’re not meant to be a long-term person. Every time you get something, I go, “Wow, I was just focusing on being a tag team wrestler, which I haven’t done in years and became champion. How can I make this the most memorable thing I’ve done in the last 10 years?”

Ziggler continued by stating that he would go to work and focus on it while watching different kinds of movies or studying different wrestlers from the 70s and 80s. By doing this, he looked at it and how he can make it different.

He added that Seth Rollins has done an awesome job and that it’s great to see what he’s done with that title.

Shortly after WrestleMania 34 earlier this year, the WWE decided to pair him up with former NXT Champion Drew McIntyre on television. Ziggler talked about the team and how when talents would be called up from NXT to the main roster, he would teach them and make them better.

Ziggler is doing just that with McIntyre and helping him get caught up to speed since the last time he was on the main roster.

Hopefully somewhere in a year, he punches me in the face and the arena erupts. Hopefully that will be the case, we’ll see. You never know around here. We’re not just a tag team with matching outfits, we’re just two dudes who want to be the champ and we’re watching each other’s back, so it’s a little bit of a nice twist on just tag teams.”

Ziggler also talked about the origin of his name, his time in OVW and more. You can listen to the full interview here.

Jim Ross In Hospital With Rib Injury Following NJPW Show

4

Jim Ross is reported to be in hospital this morning awaiting test results on a possible broken rib. Ross is believed to have sustained the injury during Juice Robinson vs Jay White at the Cow Palace on Saturday.

White suplex Juice into the guardrail on the outside which crashed into the announcer’s table and knocked Ross off his chair. AXS TV posted highlights of the move below:

Following the spot, Josh Barnett stormed the ring but was quickly sent back to his position.

Ross posted the following regarding the matter, stating that the spot was neither planned nor discussed with him:

“For the record, the ‘bump’ I took at ringside at #G1SanFrancisco was not storyline driven matter nor was it discussed,” Ross Tweeted. “I think I broke a rib. Couldn’t put my roller bag in the overhead today after a sleepless Sat night.”

Barnett also confirmed on Twitter that Ross’ injury is not part of a work.

Jim Ross and NJPW

Jim Ross and New Japan Pro Wrestling fans have had a tumultuous relationship since the legendary announcer began calling the shows for AXS TV. While Ross is a well-known name in wrestling, many NJPW fans have voiced their preference for Don Callis and Kevin Kelly’s commentary on New Japan World.

Following a previous New Japan special in Long Beach, Tama Tonga was openly critical of Ross’ commentary during his match. Ross has been criticized for not being as knowledgeable about NJPW’s product as much as Callis or Kelly as well. Additionally, Barnett has been criticized by the Young Bucks for not trying to get the talent over enough.

Ross published a response to these criticisms on his blog back in March.

“I read some of the criticisms about my work and the broadcast in general but essentially people want, the die-hards who follow New Japan World, they want their team. They want Kevin Kelly and Don Callis to do the show. I don’t blame them. I don’t even get mad about it. The only thing that gets frustrating is when you’ve got wrestling fans who’ve got like 40 followers on Twitter that tell you, “your career sucks,” and that you should be dead or not allowed to be on television. That’s kind of crude, I think. Does that really feel necessary for not knowing the certain name of a certain hold?”

Flip Gordon To Challenge For NWA World Heavyweight Title and Spot On All-In

2

Flip Gordon has been announced as the next challenger for Nick Aldis’ NWA World Heavyweight Championship.

Cody is scheduled to face whoever is the NWA champion in the main event of All-In on September 1st, 2018 in Chicago. Should Flip be victorious over Aldis (however unlikely that may be), he would face Cody at All-In.

Billy Corgan’s NWA released footage of Alidis finding out who his newest challenger is on the latest episode of “10 Pounds of Gold.” The events played out on a recent Championship Wrestling from Hollywood show.

“I should have seen this coming. Looks like Billy and Ring of Honor have played Cody and I for fools,” Aldis said on the program. “Because it says here that I’m defending the NWA World Wrestling Championship against Flip Gordon.”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0KrfgsCBP_M&feature=youtu.be

Nick Aldis vs Flip Gordon

The match will take place in Nashville, TN on July 20th, 2018.

Nick Aldis is currently defending the NWA World Heavyweight title’s 94th reign. He won the title from Tim Storm at a CZW show on December 9th, 2017. He’s defended the title against the likes of James Ellsworth, David Starr, Crimson, Lance Anoai, Tommy Dreamer, Colt Cabana, Matt Cross, and Sam Adonis.

26-year-old Flip Gordon is a young up-and-comer who has gained a large following through his appearances on Being the Elite. A long-running storyline has Cody not wanting to book Flip for All-In and Flip trying to qualify for the show during matches on indy shows. In 11 days, Flip will be involved in arguably the biggest match of his career.

Braun Strowman Reflects On Five Years With WWE

5

Braun Strowman has enjoyed a meteoric rise in the WWE. Over the weekend, he experienced a career highlight when he teamed with The Undertaker and Roman Reigns in a six man tag match at Madison Square Garden. It was also his 5-year anniversary with the company.

WWE has published a video of Strowman reflecting on the milestone. As confident as he comes across on television, the big man shows some humility in this interview and admits that it’s hard to believe how much success he’s enjoyed thus far.

“This company has been nothing but amazing to me.” Strowman said. “It’s done things and shown me things that I never thought were possible in life. It’s one thing after another. I’m so flabbergasted at where my career has gone in such a short period of time and I’m so grateful for every opportunity I’ve gotten so far to this point.”

You can watch Strowman’s comments here:

Braun Strowman’s WWE Career

Starting in NXT as one of Adam Rose’s infamous Rosebuds, Strowman quickly learned the pro wrestling trade and found himself on the Main Roster with fellow beard enthusiasts The Wyatt Family.

The 2016 Superstar Draft saw Strowman sent to RAW while his stable mates ended up on Smackdown Live. Once on his own, Strowman saw a massive increase in popularity while he embarked on an undefeated streak that saw him in the mix for the Universal Championship less than a year after being called up.

In 2018 Strowman added winning the RAW Tag Team Champioship at Wrestlemania, pairing with Alexa Bliss in the Mixed Match Challenge, winning the 50-man Greatest Royal Rumble and winning a Money In The Bank briefcase to his list of WWE accomplishments.

Chris Jericho Reveals Vince McMahon’s Reaction To TNA Going Against WWE In 2010

8

Chris Jericho has reflected on the reaction of WWE Chairman Vince McMahon when he found out that TNA’s flagship show at the time in 2010, Impact, would be going head-to-head with WWE’s flagship show, Monday Night RAW.

Jericho talked about it during a recent edition of his Talk is Jericho podcast. If you recall, these shows would battle it out for ratings on Monday nights at the time starting on January 4, 2010.

“[Vince] said, ‘take me out of the equation. You can’t compete with WWE at this point.’ ‘It’s too much of a machine, it’s too much of a brand, it’s just the way it is.’ And he’s right.

You’re not gonna [beat] the WWE. You can compete, carve out your own niche, yes. But I also believe that [WWE] has now become entrenched in Americana, pop culture, and the world. It’s not gonna go anywhere.”

If you recall, this episode of Impact started a new era in TNA as Hulk Hogan made his promotional debut while Jeff Hardy made his return to the company. Also, Scott Hall, Kevin Nash, Sean Waltman, Val Venis, Mick Foley, and Ric Flair made appearances while Bobby Lashley departed.

The show was headlined by AJ Styles retaining his TNA World Heavyweight Championship by defeating Kurt Angle in the main event.

On the flip side, RAW featured the reconciliation of Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart after 12 years of bad blood due to the Montreal Screwjob. TNA’s time on Monday nights didn’t last long as they went back to Thursday nights in early March.

The head-to-head battle only last two months before TNA pulled the plug on the ‘Monday Night War’ experiment.

CM Punk Shares His Workout Playlist

15

Former professional wrestler and current MMA attempter, CM Punk recently sat down with noted Heavy Metal magazine Kerrang! to discuss his the songs that get him worked up while he’s working out preparing for a fight.

“Some of these song picks could get repetitive,” Punk admitted, laughingly. “Every single song is on the list because it’s a power song. And I could easily throw 10 more at you! This was a hard list to compile!”

Unsurprisingly, Punk’s playlist features heavily in classic punk rock like The Misfits, new breed artists like Frank Turner and even a touch of metal with legendary band Motorhead.

  • Misfits – “Green Hell”
  • Madball – “Set It Off”
  • Rocket From the Crypt – “Middle”
  • Against Me! – “Black Me Out”
  • Run the Jewels – “Talk to Me”
  • Rancid – “Roots Radical”
  • Cock Sparrer – “Take ‘Em All”
  • Bouncing Souls – “Apartment 5F”
  • Turnstile – “I Don’t Wanna Be Blind”
  • Motorhead – “Ace of Spades”
  • Frank Turner – “The Next Storm”
  • Living Colour – “Cult of Personality”

The most interesting choice in the list is “Cult of Personality” which Punk used as his entrance theme on the independent scene and for the final years of his WWE run.

CM Punk, unhappy with his place in the company and how he was being used in storylines,  famously walked out of the WWE after the 2014 Royal Rumble. He went on to compete twice in the UFC Welterweight division, losing first to Mickey Gall via submission in 2016 and then by decision to Mike Jackson in 2018.

You can hear each song as well as Punk’s notes on the Kerrang! website.

Taeler Hendrix Responds To Jay Lethal’s Statement

10

Yesterday, Jay Lethal released a statement regarding accusations made by Taeler Hendrix. Lethal denied all allegations against him and encouraged fans on Twitter to refrain from sending hateful messages to either himself or the accuser.

Hendrix responded on Twitter, posting direct messages sent to her by Lethal.

The Taeler Hendrix/Jay Lethal Situation

Hendrix made her accusations against Jay Lethal during an interaction on social media with a fan on July 4th, 2018.

ROH released a statement regarding the matter to PW Torch:

“We were troubled to hear the allegations that surfaced last night on Twitter. We take these matters very seriously and will be investigating this situation thoroughly, reviewing all evidence related to the matter. Ring of Honor strives to provide an environment and workplace where male and female wrestlers are free from any misconduct or abuse. We will take appropriate action upon the conclusion of our findings.”

Jay Lethal then released a statement on the matter yesterday:

“Let me be clear, there is absolutely no validity to these baseless allegations,” Lethal wrote in his longer response. “Throughout my career, I have sought to conduct myself with honor and integrity. I would never engage in any conduct that disrespects this business or the men and women in this industry.

“Every individual has a right to be heard and must be given every opportunity to speak truth to power. Anyone engaging in misconduct or abuse of any kind simply has no place in our business or our society.

“I am confident that these unfortunate allegations will be proven to be completely unfounded at the conclusion of Ring Of Honor’s investigation.”

Bryan Alvarez of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter stated ROH officials told them Hendrix was never released from the promotion. “According to ROH, Taeler Hendrix was never fired,” Alvarez Tweeted. “She was not under contract, was working on a per-show basis, and was booked for events in April 2017, but then resigned in writing prior to those events.”

Starrcast announces distribution plans with FITE TV

CHICAGO – Starrcast creator Conrad Thompson announced on Monday his plans for making the highly anticipated Starrcast event available live on FITE, the premium digital combat sports network. The already sold-out Starrcast is slated to take place Aug. 30-Sept. 2 at the Hyatt Regency Schaumburg outside Chicago. Starrcast is providing the stage for fans to experience in person the very best of the many pro wrestling-themed podcasts that have taken the world of wrestling by storm.

Starrcast is the convention that has developed in connection with the “All In” wrestling event set for Saturday, Sept.1 at the Sears Centre. “All In” sold out the 10,000-seat Sears Centre in 30 minutes in mid-May.

The Starrcast telecast on FITE will feature as many as 20 live podcasts scheduled for the weekend, including ones hosted by Bruce Prichard, Eric Bischoff, Tony Schiavone, Madusa and Colt Cabana. All of the podcasts on FITE will feature special guests from the wrestling world during each 1½ to 2-hour program. A complete schedule for each of the podcasts will be released shortly.

Never before has an event like this sold out over three months in advance in the wrestling industry or for that fact in the fan convention business. Combined with All In, Chicago has become the place to be in the wrestling world during Labor Day weekend,” Thompson said. “Because of the demand we have been able to work with FITE TV and make each of these podcasts available live throughout the four-day weekend.
