WWE Starrcade Results & Videos

18

Last night saw the return of Starrcade inside the legendary Greenboro Coliseum for the first time in 30 years. Incidentally this is also the first time that WWE has used the once iconic WCW pay per view name for one of their events…sadly this was only a house show but none the less there were quite a few high profile appearances and returns from World Championship Wrestling’s historic past, here are the full results from the show:

Bobby Roode b. Dolph Ziggler – Arn Anderson made an impromptu appearance during the match and hit one of his patented Spinebusters on Dolph! Check it out below for the epic WCW nostalgia feels.

Rusev, The Bludgeon Brothers, The Colons, & Mike Kanellis b. Breezango, The Ascension, Tye Dillinger, & Sin Cara

The New Day tweaked with The Rock n Roll Express and The Hardys…the Hardys also spoke to WWE.com on why Starrcade is of such high importance to them as performers:

Naomi b. Tamina (w/Lana)

‘The Natural’ Dustin Rhodes b. Dash Wilder – Dustin made an emotional appearance using his old WCW persona and paid tribute to his father Dusty.

https://twitter.com/Goldust/status/934611485564788737

Shinsuke Nakamura b. Baron Corbin – Before the bout Shinsuke shared a moment with one of wrestling’s icons Ricky ‘The Dragon’ Steamboat.

https://twitter.com/mitchellpwtorch/status/934603566060326912

The Usos (c) b. The New Day, Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn, and Chad Gable & Shelton Benjamin in a four-way for the SmackDown Tag Team titles

Charlotte (c) b. Natalya in a cage match for the SmackDown Women’s title – Incredibly this was the first cage match that Natalya has ever been a part of, unfortunately for her it was in a losing effort.

The Nature Boy and possibly the most iconic performer in WCW’s illustrious history Ric Flair made an appearance and spoke briefly with WWE.com on his memories of the Coliseum, let’s face it you can’t have Starrcade without some jet flying and limousine riding…

AJ Styles (c) d. Jinder Mahal (w/ The Singh Brothers) in a steel cage for the WWE Title – A result that will no doubt please a large portion of the WWE fan base, AJ retained the title heading into the Clash of Champions event where he will again defend against Jinder Mahal.

A truly memorable event, the only question that remains is this…why wasn’t this on the WWE Network?

Angelico Announces That He Is Departing AAA

5

AAA and Lucha Underground star Angelico has announced that he will be departing Mexico as of January 1st.

The Lucha Libre performer took to Twitter to reveal his plans going forward, which include a move east to Europe and his new home in Barcelona, Spain. Reports indicate that Angelico’s leaving is amicable, he made a point to thank Ultimo Dragon & Konnan in his official announcement and it is clear that the door is wide open for a potential return if and when Angelico decides to head back to Mexico.

Tugboat On Vince McMahon Pitching Him The Typhoon Gimmick

8

Former WWE Superstar Fred Ottman (a.k.a Tugboat, Typhoon and The Shockmaster) recently did an interview on the School Of Morton podcast to talk about a variety of professional wrestling topics. Ottman discussed being pitched the Typhoon gimmick, being a part of a feud with Hulk Hogan, and visiting Disneyland with his former Natural Disasters partner “Earthquake” John Tenta. Here are the highlights:

Being pitched the Typhoon gimmick:

“They called me in the office. Vince [McMahon] would sit down with all of his guys and they would have agents or whoever the powers may be. Pat Patterson was always his right hand man. They would throw things back and forth like a committee. He would call you into the office and talk to you. The thing is if they would come up with a gimmick for you they want you to be comfortable.”

Being a part of a feud with Hulk Hogan:

“I couldn’t believe it, actually. You had the man that took the business to the next level and is that American icon. Once you went through that curtain, you get out there and feel the electricity of those people and Hulk was and still is a good, good guy and genuine guy and has helped so many guys in this business. Feel the electricity and the people’s response whether you are a heel or a babyface and getting that response.”

Visiting Disneyland with Earthquake:

“I got a picture of me and him at Disney World with our families. In Orlando on the Dumbo ride with Mickey Mouse ears on. People knew who we were from TV and here’s the two big rhinoceros with Mickey Mouse ears on to ride the dumbo ride. We were lucky we didn’t snap them off. We were both over four hundred pounds!”

JBL Reacts To Getting Snubbed On WWE List, 205 Live Star Teases Challenging Roman Reigns

16

– As we’ve previously noted, WWE did an article on WWE Superstars who have won every active title in the company today. The list featured names such as Daniel Bryan, Chris Jericho, and Roman Reigns who captured the Intercontinental Championship from The Miz on RAW this past Monday.

JBL took to Twitter to react to being left out of the mix, however, it should be noted that the World Tag Team Championship that he won was retired in August of 2010. Therefore, he technically hasn’t won every title currently active in the company today:

– In regards to Roman Reigns’ Intercontinental Title run it was noted that he is expected to hold open challenges for the title. 205 Live star Cedrick Alexander teased accepting one of those challenges:

UpUpDownDown UFC 2 Championship Title Match

2

As always, Austin Creed has been working on his YouTube channel: UpUpDownDown.  The past week has seen 2 major features uploaded for videogame fans to enjoy.  The first is Round 2 of the Madden 18 tournament which sees RAW’s Jason Jordan take on TJ Perkins.

Jordan previously shocked the tournament in one of the most intense, yet hilarious matches as he beat 3 time champion: Seth Rollins.

TJP destroyed the inexperienced Luke Gallows in his last match-up, and demonstrated solid potential as he takes on Jason Jordan: The Champion Slayer.  Check out the game below:

However, the most entertaining video of the week on UpUpDownDown featured Austin Creed himself, and Jimmy Uso in a UFC 2 Championship Title match.  Although there is no current tournament, Creed has used a similar system to any other championship title in UFC or WWE by hosting championship matches with worthy opponents at any time.

Not only was it an excellent display of skill and talent, there were multiple cameos and moments outside the game which make this a must see.  Check out the title match below, as well as a list of highlights.

5 Highlights From Austin Creed vs Jimmy Uso:

  1. This is taking place in a University Volley Ball Court – WHAT!?  That’s dedication.
  2. Kevin Owens makes an appearance, wearing his Face of America brand t-shirt; he then partially remains in character as he removes the American flag background and stands in it’s place.  Everyone else just accepts this and says “Oh, yeah, it’s his thing”.
  3. They’re told to be quiet, and have to continue the game while trying to whisper – which doesn’t go well as Kofi Kingston, Big E, and Jey Uso are there to provide support and commentary.
  4. Sami Zayn appears, topless, and impress Big E with his New Day like dance moves.  If you watch anything from this video, skip to 6:49 just for this!
  5. The in-game fight is ridiculously entertaining and close (without giving spoilers away).

Jerry Lawler Says The WWE Has Become Politically Correct

10

WWE Hall Of Famer Jerry “The King” Lawler has launched another episode of his podcast, Dinner With The King, in which he discusses a variety of professional wrestling topics. During the interview Lawler touched on WWE being labeled as PG by many people, but thinking it’s actually rated PC for Politically Correct. Here are the highlights:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GArkRkvwwp0

Jim Carrey’s ‘Jim and Andy’ film tidbit:

“After we finished wrapping the movie and did that the last scenes in New York, that day he [Jim Carrey] invited me to dinner, and- and this was like this is going to be so cool because, you know, he was going to be out of character I was used to him being Andy Kaufman.

“So I was going to get to go to dinner and after all this bad blood between he and I during the filming of the movie, we were going to go out to eat together and then then sit and talk about all of this stuff. So he told me this really nice restaurant and to meet him at there in New, York, City. Anyway I went and he stood me up and he talks about that. I didn’t realize at the time that he did it intentionally. But I didn’t know that until I saw this documentary. He was even more of a jerk than I thought.”

WWE being PG or PC:

“Everybody says ‘what does PG mean?’ Think everybody gets that wrong. I don’t think they’re PG. PG means you can be risky and and say some stuff like that, but then it’s up to the parents to decide. If that’s okay, for your kid to hear it, that’s what that means. Parental guidance.

“So the parents should listen and decide whether they think this is okay for the kids, but I think what the WWE has become is PC. And, it’s what the whole world has become politically correct and worrying about offending anybody. That’s what keeps you muzzled so to speak.”

Maria Kanellis Responds To People Shaming Her For Getting Pregnant

9

This past September Maria Kanellis announced that she and her husband, SmackDown Live star Mike Kanellis, are expecting their first child together. Apparently people have been shaming Kanellis for getting pregnant while working for WWE, and she recently took to Facebook to respond to these people:

#DivaLadyWifeMom

“How dare you get pregnant? You can’t workout. And other stupid things people have said to me.”

“I think it’s funny that everyone is an expert on pregnancy, including men that can’t birth them and don’t have children of their own. Now, I am not an expert on pregnancy but I do have my OB, PCP, mom, my friends with kids, and my trainer on speed dial. Let’s just analysis the first statement/question: “How dare you get pregnant?” I’m not exactly sure what this means but I can only assume it’s because I work for WWE. I signed a contract with WWE in March and had no plans of getting pregnant until my contract was up. So, yes I have only been signed for a few months this time but, I worked for WWE before. For 5 and a half years. I’ve also been working in wrestling for 13 years. AND I’ve been working since I was 12. I was a bus girl for my first job. Thus, I have been working for 23 years. I CAN get pregnant. I can even stay home while pregnant and have a job because WWE thinks I am important and this baby is important enough to do so. After 23 years of work, do I deserve maternity leave? I think so and so does WWE. Women deserve maternity leave and men deserve paternity leave. It should be a right not a privilege. I will continue fulfilling the obligations of my WWE contract even after the baby arrives so, SMGMB. (Suck My Giant Momma Boobs) Hahaha……

“You can’t workout….. Really? Has anyone seen a lioness while pregnant? What if she decides, oh I can’t run today, I’m pregnant? The lioness starves and so does her cubs. Or what happened in colonial times when the men went off to war? Did the farm get neglected? No, she plowed the field and took care of her 7 other children. Women are amazing. Women’s bodies are amazing. I will not let people on social media make me feel powerless. Should some women not workout? Of course. But, I don’t have any special circumstances. And if I did then, I would “settle down” as one hater put it. There are real problems with gaining too much weight while pregnant for instance childhood obesity, gestational diabetes, less accurate sonogram results, premature labor, preeclampsia, high blood pressure, excess bleeding, larger percentage of c-sections, and the list goes on. If you are really concerned about it read up here or here. And if you still have questions go here, here, or here. Links are below to research. I will not stop working out because some ill informed person tells me too. Some women don’t workout while pregnant and that’s their choice. It’s an individual choice a woman makes with her doctor.

“On to more stupid things….. “You are annoying. No one wants to hear about your pregnancy.” Let me solve this, real quick. I am pregnant. For the foreseeable future, that is the next 19 weeks, I will talk about being pregnant. You will see pregnant belly photos, baby stuff, blogs about being pregnant, and when I am feeling ultra emotional, photos of Mike with my pregnant belly. Therefore, if you don’t like it, Stop Following Me. Done. Another of my favorite comments, “You look really pregnant.” What the hell does that mean? You are either pregnant or you are not. I am pregnant so of course I really look pregnant. Also, as a warning, in a few months, if you say that to me, I may eat you. I am hungry all the time. Because, I will be really pregnant. AND my all time favorite stupid comment, word for word “Kid won’t have room to move. Prob get caught up in tubing. U ever heard of relaxing” My response was, you don’t understand the female anatomy. I’ll just leave that there.

“Mike and I will be revealing baby’s gender in January and as a Christmas Gift to our amazing fans we will be telling you baby’s initials on Christmas Day!!!

Love Hugs and Peace,

“The Crazy Pregnant Lady”
Maria”

Married Wrestling Couple Apparently Splits Up

7

It appears as though former IMPACT Wrestling stars Davey Richards and Angelina Love are no longer together. Love and Richards started seeing each other back in January of 2015 and were married in June of that same year. Austin Aries Responds To Fan Who Claimed He Was Abusive & Rude

16

A fan recently took to Facebook to call out Austin Aries for reportedly being rude and abusive to him and his friends at an airport. Aries was said to be hostile after the fan approached Aries for a photo, and the former WWE star began “abusing us saying why didn’t we pay at the show.” Here’s the full post:

“WHO THE F__K IS AUSTIN ARIES?!!! After what happened this morning, you’ve lost a true fan who’s been supporting you since Day 1. I can’t believe you think my friends & I aren’t supporters just because we asked nicely for a photo at the airport & you start abusing us saying why didn’t we pay at the show plus on top of that, you tried to get us kicked out of Qantas but lucky the amazing staff defended us saying we’re doing nothing wrong.

“We pay YOUR salary, YOUR tickets, put food on YOUR table & make you who YOU are today. Be f–king grateful you’ve got fans coming to the airport, wanting your photo/autograph, don’t be all greedy/money hungry thinking you’re f–king king s–t lol”

Aries responded to the allegations on Twitter:

Rumor Killer On Women’s Royal Rumble

10

A number of WWE superstars from past and present have spoken about a possible Women’s Royal Rumble in recent times and many believe it’s the next logical step to take into the Women’s Revolution.

Since it has been a hot topic of discussion recently, a lot of people saw the recent NXT call-ups as a part of the long-term plans leading to a Women’s Rumble next year.

However, if reports from Wrestling Observer Radio are to be believed, currently there are no talks within WWE about doing a Rumble featuring only female competitors.

Though it’s worth noting here that in the last few months the company’s decisions have been very shaky and Officials have changed a lot of their plans in last minute.

So while this is a disappointing news for fans, given the fact that there are still 2 months left for Royal Rumble, it won’t be a big surprise if the plans change and the match actually end up taking place at the event.

Update On Jeff Hardy’s WWE Return

5

This past September it was revealed that former WWE Champ Jeff Hardy had suffered a shoulder injury in which he tore his rotator cuff and labrum. He underwent surgery in October to repair the issues. Early indications had Hardy missing WrestleMania 34 next year, however, Jeff doesn’t seem to think he’ll be missing “The Show Of Shows” come April.

Matt and Jeff both attended a WrestleMania 34 pre-sale party in New Orleans, and per a report from NOLA.com, Jeff confirmed that he will in fact be back in time for WrestleMania:

“Jeff Hardy’s tattooed right arm was in sling, as he recovers from shoulder surgery necessary because of repeated overextension. But, he said, he plans to be back in the tag team business by Wrestlemania 34.”

Hardy’s arm was still in a sling during his appearance at the pre-sale event:

RVD Talks Possible Return To WWE, Paige’s Father Comments On Her Return

12

– Former WWE Champion Rob Van Dam was recently asked by a fan on Twitter if he thinks he could beat current WWE Champ AJ Styles for the strap. In regards to a possible return to the company, RVD indicated that the final call is up to Triple H. Van Dam hasn’t wrestled with WWE since his August 29th match with Seth Rollins back in 2014. He has since been working the independent scene:

– As we saw on this past Monday’s episode of RAW Paige finally returned to WWE TV, and her father Ricky Knight recently took to Twitter to react to her return:

Kurt Angle Q&A: His Injury Going Into Survivor Series, AJ Styles vs. Brock Lesnar

10

WWE Hall of Famer Kurt Angle recently did a Q&A on Facebook and commented on a number of interesting topics. Here are the highlights:

His injury going into Survivor Series:

“Leg is ok. I tore a muscle in it doing wind sprints 2 days before PPV. It’s okay though. I feel good and should be 100% in a week”

AJ Styles vs. Brock Lesnar:

“Their match was incredible. It displayed both of their strengths. If you stay on Brock, he will sell for you. AJ did that, and Brock sold his ass off. Match was MONEY!”

Natalya Opens Up On Career Setbacks

5

In last Tuesday’s SmackDown Live, Natalya took part in a match against Charlotte Flair to regain the Championship that she lost before Survivor Series.  The match saw the introduction of NXT stars Ruby Riot, Liv Morgan, and Sarah Logan to the ring as they interrupted the title match by beating down Natalya and Charlotte.

Since then, Natalya has opened up about setbacks in her career, her current performance and position in WWE as she wrote an inspirational based article for the Calgary Sun.

“Whether it’s an injury, a mistake that was made, or a loss, setbacks happen to every single one of us. I’ve learned that you have to fight through the hard times. Trust that they will pass, because they will pass.”

Natalya goes on to give an example of how a setback enabled her to re-evaluate her position and career to make a positive impact, rather than holding her back.

“Two years ago, I broke my ankle while practising for a match I was about to have on Monday Night Raw. It was the first injury I had ever suffered in my entire WWE career. Not only that, but it happened doing something small and innocuous. I was so mad at myself. I even went into complete denial that I was even injured (that’s how mad I was!) but my ankle was broken.”

While the following video from WWE shows injuries that are portrayed as not breaking kayfabe, it’s used here as an example of how intense and dangerous professional wrestling can be, and how far superstars are willing to go.

“Once I finally saw the break in my ankle on the doctor’s X-Ray, I stopped crying. I got really serious and said to myself: ‘OK. I’ve got this.’ I couldn’t deny I was hurt. I couldn’t turn back the hands of time. I couldn’t go under it, around it or beneath it… I had to simply GO THROUGH IT.”

Natalya also explains that she saw another piece of information from the report on her broken ankle.  She said that she saw her weight, and was shocked by it.  Natalya used the time off to refocus her priorities, development, and career;  she spent as much time as possible in the gym with a personal trainer to transform herself, making the result of a broken ankle add up to an overall positive step forward for her future.

“Fast forward to the present. At SummerSlam, I finally became the Women’s Champion in the WWE, and I did what I set out to do: make history. Last week, I lost my championship in a gruelling match against Charlotte Flair on Smackdown Live.”

“At first, I was sad. I cried. I loved holding that title up high every time I walked to the ring and feeling like the queen of the world! But I draw from my previous experiences with adversity — and trust me, there are so many outside of my broken ankle — and I see the setback of “losing” as an opportunity to chase something again and rediscover that fire inside of me when I wanted something SO much!”

Although Natalya is portrayed as the main heel in the women’s division on SmackDown Live, her article for the Calgary Sun, her hometown, is extremely humbling, inspirational and a positive message for all, not just those in professional wrestling.

“Setbacks can be huge opportunities to grow and evolve and simply BE BETTER.”

Catch the whole article on the Calgary Sun website.

Brian Cage Talks About His WWE Release

5

Lucha Underground Star Brian Cage was signed by WWE back in June 2008. However, he didn’t make it past the development stage and was released in September 2009.

During his recent interview with Ring Rust Radio, Cage talked about his release from the company among other things. Below are some of the highlights from his interview:

If he will be part of Lucha Underground season 4:

“I would definitely hope to be part of the next season. Where we left off, we will see what happens because it’s been a while since we taped. I don’t know how much things will change, but I hope everything works out according to plan and I can continue to do an excellent program with Mil Muertes, Sami Callihan and King Cuerno over the gauntlet. Hopefully get my opportunity at the title again and come home with it.”

If he has any contact with WWE:

“There’s been zero contact between them and me. They were giving me the run around for 18 months about bringing me in for a try out. Finally, when they said they would bring me in, they kept saying okay the next one, the next one and the next one. Finally, they said okay we should get to this next one. I called them back the very next day and told them never mind, I don’t want to do it. I was with TNA and Lucha Underground at the time, so I just woke up and said, ‘f–k this I don’t want to do this.'”

His release from the company:

“There was a story when I got released. About six or eight months afterwards I got re-signed and then my contract got rescinded. I went back and forth with them about it and then Johnny Ace brought me down to talk to me at a show about bringing me back in. It was close to WrestleMania, so he said we will get through Mania then we will bring you in. So, after some calls and texts, he gets back to me and says they are no longer interested. So, I ask what happened. He tells me I haven’t called him or responded to him or came down to any live events. Then asked why would I waste both of our times just to say never mind? Then he says, ‘Well let’s face it kid, you’re average at best and were no longer interested at this time.’ I told him let’s really face it, I think you and I both know I am better than average, but I appreciate you responding and maybe we will work together in the future. I want to say something more about that, but it would be politically incorrect. Fast forward to the next time and I said I didn’t want to do it and they were blown away. They couldn’t believe it and asked if I wanted this or that and I just said that I’m no longer interested right now, maybe another time. It felt kind of good to have it come full circle.”

Other Superstars Should Strive To Be More Like Jinder Mahal: Kane

20

Former WWE Champion Jinder Mahal has received almost constant criticism from the fans of the WWE Universe.  Many have dubbed his reign as The Jinder Experiment and claimed that it has failed.  It’s hard to disagree when SmackDown Live ratings increase the night Mahal lost the title to AJ Styles.

However Kane has recently shared his opinion on The Modern Day Maharaja as they build up for a tour in India.  Talking to The Times of India, Kane suggested that the WWE Universe should reflect on what Jinder Mahal was before he was cast as The Modern Day Maharaja.

“His is a great story. He was in the WWE years ago, then left company. And then really improved both in his wrestling and his body and came back and became a world champion. I think a guy like Jinder Mahal is really what every WWE superstar should strive to become”

Here’s an example of Jinder Mahal in action back in August 2013.

And here is Jinder Mahal taking on AJ Styles in May 2017.

It’s clear that Mahal has significantly improved since returning, which Kane highlights as a positive, suggesting that other WWE superstars should learn from.  It’s hard to deny the hard work that Jinder has put in, and I am not suggesting that other superstars in WWE aren’t putting in hard work, but Kane could be seen as suggesting that others are under-performing in their own development.

Kane goes on to praise the tour in India and those that are joining the tour of India:

“The India tour is going to be a great event. All big superstars are going be there Triple H, Jinder Mahal, The Shield, Samoa Joe, Cesaro and Sheamus and the match with Strowman, it is going to be a big match; two big guys doing their best to prove who is the dominant big man in the WWE”

Therefore Kane’s suggestion that WWE superstars should strive to be like Jinder Mahal is likely aimed at those struggling in the mid-card.  But the next question would be: who would WWE be keen to push like they did with Mahal?  Perhaps the next Superstar Shake-Up could reveal some clues.

The full article with Kane can be found here on Time of India.

Jerry Lawler Reveals The Undertaker Was Backstage At Survivor Series

17

During the latest episode of his Dinner With The King Podcast, Jerry “The King” Lawler revealed that the Phenom The Undertaker was backstage at the recent Survivor Series PPV. Below are some highlights from his podcast:

Undertaker looking too good:

“I think he might have looked too good, I think when you get when you hang around or you show up and you look that good, they in the WWE, they’re ready for you to come back. You know, closer to the time after WrestleMania and I think I said that I believe we’ve seen the last of Undertaker in the ring. Now, I’m going to I’m going to go back on my word. Just looking at him the other night, I think there’s some more matches left in the Undertaker.”

Sitting with Taker and Kane backstage to watch the show:

“So there’s a TV and monitor to watch the show, There were three seats. Three chairs in front of the monitor and I was sitting in the one on the left hand side and in the middle now, to my right, sitting next to me, was Undertaker. And to his right sitting next to him was Kane.”

John Cena’s reaction when he saw these three:

“We were all just sitting here watching the show talking about old times and stuff, and all of a sudden, the door happened to be open. All of a sudden, we saw John Cena. He went past the door and glanced in, and then he just went past. Suddenly we saw him backing up, he just backed up, and he looked in at the three of us sitting there – and he said, ‘that’s pretty cool.’ And he just walked on.”

At this point, it’s not known if The Dead Man was on a casual visit or if it meant something for his future. Undertaker is scheduled to return to WWE TV during the 25th-anniversary episode of Raw on January 22nd. Though it will most likely be a one-off appearance.

Tag Matches Announced for PROGRESS Chapter 58, Plus Teaser Video for Upcoming Debut?

0

PROGRESS has announced two tag bouts for their upcoming Chapter 58 event this Sunday. The team of Chris Brookes and Kid Lykos (also known as #CCK) will be taking on the Grizzled Young Veterans comprised of Zack Gibson and James Drake for the PROGRESS Tag Team Championships.

Drake and Gibson were expected to challenge for the belts back at Chapter 56 however due to injury Lykos had to forfeit and Jimmy Havoc took his spot in the bout. There is a very good chance that the Veterans take the belts here as PROGRESS looks to rejuvenate their Tag Team title scene heading out of the British Strong Style run earlier this year.

Speaking of Jimmy Havoc…he and Mark Haskins will be taking on the young team of Connor Mills and Maverick Mayhew. PROGRESS have decided to throw their own ‘young lions’ to THE lions in Havoc & Haskins who recently turned heel and run roughshot over Jack Sexsmith and David Starr, expect this to be a bloodbath.

PROGRESS has also released a teaser video with the tagline ‘Til Valhalla. The company often use social media as a way of hyping an appearance at a Chapter event and this could be leading to a new debut, who it may be is completely up in the air at this time.
