Roman Reigns Explains Why He Isn’t Involved In The Current Shield Reunion Angle

6

WWE Superstar Roman Reigns did an interview on ESPN Sportscenter this morning (Mon. August 21, 2017) to promote tonight’s Monday Night RAW from the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, New York. Reigns discussed the mini-Shield reunion going on between newly-crowned RAW Tag Team Champions Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose, why he isn’t involved, and if he’d like to be down the line. Here are the highlights:

Possible Shield reunion:

“The main thing for me right now, I’ve been in that Universal title picture,” Reigns said. “You can ask Seth or Dean, if they were able to be in that same situation, that’s what you go for. You want to have that top title, and that’s definitely it.

“I’m super proud of those guys, they exemplified what makes the Shield so special [at SummerSlam]. The teamwork and just that brotherhood of just going out there and getting it done – not for yourself, but for the man next to you. It really showed why when we came in, why we were so special.”

Reigns hoping a full reunion happens soon:

“Hopefully in the near future maybe,” Reigns said of a full Shield reunion. “Not only to prolong my career maybe, because it does take it out of you running into those meatballs [Brock Lesnar, Braun Strowman, Samoa Joe] for 30 minutes at a time, but there’s just some kind of magic when the three of us get together and we’re just moving on all cylinders. It always seems to be a great time for the crowd.”

Tonight’s WWE RAW from Brooklyn, NY is just hours away and we’ve got several news items headed into the show, courtesy of PWInsider.com:

– A Brooklyn Street Fight is scheduled between Big Cass and Enzo Amore.

– John Cena will also be in action. Cena noted on Twitter this morning that he “might take someone up on an offer” tonight and tagged WWE. On his TODAY show appearance, Cena teased that he’ll be wearing jean shorts later tonight.

– With SummerSlam in the books, the RAW brand looks ahead to No Mercy, which takes place on Sunday, September 24th from Los Angeles. The main event of No Mercy will be WWE Universal Champion Brock Lesnar defending against Braun Strowman.

WWE has announced Lesnar will be in the house tonight, so there’s a good chance we’ll get the official word on this matchup on RAW.

Baron Corbin Responds To Speculation That He’s Being Buried

38

SmackDown Live star Baron Corbin isn’t shying away from speculation that he’s in the WWE dog house.

After winning a Money in the Bank briefcase back in June, Corbin has been making headlines in recent weeks for his Twitter tirades. At one point, he got into it with Mojo Rawley online, with Rawley getting the final word in that exchange.

https://twitter.com/mojorawleywwe/status/894250754248257536?lang=en

Corbin later talked trash to Dave Meltzer for being critical of him, arguing that Meltzer had no right to judge his work since Meltzer never wrestled a match. That argument doesn’t hold a lot of water, but the real damage was done when Corbin was responding to fans who defended Meltzer.

Twitter user @GetUpMike (Mike Gilbert) told Corbin that Dave Meltzer is more respected in wrestling than he’ll ever be. Corbin called the guy a loser, but Gilbert revealed that he’s a 14 year veteran of the US Airforce and served two tours of Afghanistan. Whoops.

https://twitter.com/getupmike/status/895792741896003584

Last week, Baron Corbin cashed in his MITB contract only to lose the impromptu title match to Jinder Mahal in one of the shortest matches in WWE history. At SummerSlam, Corbin decisively to John Cena in a match that left a lot of people with the impression that the company is souring on him and he’s being buried.

On the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Radio reviewing SummerSlam, Dave Meltzer made it clear: “He’s definitely being punished.” Losing a match, especially to John Cena, is not by itself an ominous sign. But Cena openly mocked Corbin during the match and it was clear by the booking that Corbin was not being protected. Meltzer speculated that he wouldn’t be surprised to see former NXT Champion Bobby Roode get called up to SmackDown and take Corbin’s spot as one of the top heels on the brand.

Baron Corbin tweeted the following on Monday noon, letting the people talking about him know that their opinions don’t matter.

Tony Schiavone Returning To Commentating At MLW: One-Shot

9

Legendary wrestling announcer Tony Schiavone is returning to the broadcast booth at MLW: One-Shot October 5th and will be calling the action along with former NXT lead announcer Rich Bocchini. Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated broke the news on Monday afternoon.

This will be Schiavone’s first time calling a pro wrestling event since 2001, when he and Jerry Lawler worked a series of tapings for the short-lived XFW promotion that launched shortly after the demise of WCW.

“I’m really excited to return, and the reason I am so excited is because I respect what these wrestlers do,” said Schiavone. “I’ve seen enough independent shows to know how hard these wrestlers work, how much effort and time they put into their craft, and how much they respect the business.”

Schiavone noted that he’s particularly excited to call the matches of MLW: One-Shot competitors Ricochet, Sami Callihan, and Jeff Cobb.

“My job at One-Shot is to go out there and enhance the talent,” Schiavone said. “I want to share my excitement to shine a light on the talent. I’m going to take the time to meet them all, get to know them, and make sure they’re treated on the air like the stars they are.”

Currently announced for Major League Wrestling’s One-Shot event:

MAIN EVENT:
– Ricochet vs. Shane “Swerve” Strickland

– MVP vs. Sami Callihan

– Jeff Cobb vs. TBA

Jim Ross On Brock Lesnar Retaining WWE Universal Title, SummerSlam, More

1

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has posted a new blog entry over at his official website where he gives his thoughts on various topics. Here are the highlights:

NXT Takeover: Brooklyn III:

“There is a discernable, unique vibe at NXT events that I have personally experienced from working at two, NXT Takeover events, in Chicago and in Brooklyn. The audience seemingly has made a strong emotional investment in the NXT talents and it shows.”

SummerSlam:

“Watched SummerSlam sunday night from my Norman, Oklahoma home and enjoyed it. Happy I invested the time to watch the pre game show and the main card even though the length of the overall presentation was a bit challenging in which to remain engaged for approximately 5+ hours. Again, I will discuss the entire Summer Slam week with Mike Johnson on the new Ross Report podcast that we will record Monday night after RAW.”

Brock Lesnar retaining the WWE Universal Title over Samoa Joe, Roman Reigns, and Braun Strowman:

“I enjoyed the submission finishers utilized at various times on the show and the overall effort of the talents. The physicality of the Fatal Fourway was off the charts and, as I predicted, Lesnar retaining was the right thing to do and it is obvious that many fans want a Lesnar vs Strowman bout somewhere in the foreseeable future….Wrestlemania? Much more on this matter on the Ross Report.”

Ross also talked about Jim Cornette, Joey Ryan and more. You can read the blog here.

Bullet Club Captures ROH’s Six Man Man Tag Titles

Sunday night’s Ring of Honor show from Edinburgh, Scottland saw the Bullet Club add a few more championship belts to their arsenal.

ROH tag team champions The Young Bucks and fellow Bullet Club member “Hangman” Adam Page defeated Dalton Castle & The Boys to capture the ROH Six Man Tag Team Championships.

Bullet Club leader Cody is the reigning ROH World Champion, so the Club possesses every championship in the company aside from the World Television Championship, which NJPW star Kushida won from BC member Marty Scurll back at War of the Worlds on 5/14.

To commemorate their latest title win, Nick and Matt Jackson have dubbed themselves the Hung Bucks.

Gabe Sapolsky Comments On His Status With NXT

3

EVOLVE booker Gabe Sapolsky has commented on his status with NXT after recent reports that he’s been visiting the Performance Center and attending NXT TV & Takeover tapings.

During last week’s media call to promote Takeover, Triple H commented on Gabe’s involvement with the company  “I like Gabe,” said Triple H. “I like what he does. I think he’s a smart guy that helps to get talent going in their careers and is a great place for them to work and he’s cultivating talent.”

He continued, When I have an opportunity for him to be around us, and learn from us, and I can bring him in, see how his mind works, and think, it’s good for everybody…If I feel like someone is a talent who can add to our product, add to enjoyment for fans and can help, yeah I want to work with that person, and I want to help them be able to do the same.”

In the latest WWN Alerts email, Sapolsky addressed Triple H’s remarks but assured fans he’s not looking to join NXT full-time.

“I need to thank Triple H for those humbling and nice words,” said Sapolsky.  It has been an invaluable learning experience being at NXT. I am all about talent development. My favorite part of this job is seeing talent learn, improve, grow and then realize their dreams. The lessons I have learned from Triple H, William Regal and everyone at NXT has made me better at my job. Everyone is incredible there.”

“There is no talk of a writer’s job at NXT. I am not there for a tryout as has been rumored. I’m there because we all want to have the best tools and ideas possible to lead pro wrestling into the future. NXT is an opportunity for me to improve my skills, and then spread that knowledge to everyone in WWN, whether it is directly to our locker room, to those who participate in the Seminar/Tryout or anyone who joins our office staff with the New Promoter Initiative.”

Reigns’ PPV Losing Streak, Bryan Deletes #BryanvsAngle Tweet, Adam Cole

– With Brock Lesnar emerging victorious in the Fatal 4 Way main event of last night’s SummerSlam, it’s worth noting that Reigns has not won a match on pay-per-view since defeating The Undertaker at WrestleMania 33 back in April.

– As seen during SummerSlam, SmackDown General Manager Daniel Bryan and RAW General Manager Kurt Angle had a backstage segment where they argued about which brand would steal the show. Angle chanted “yes!” in Bryan’s face as Bryan responded with “No!” several times.

It’s worth noting that Bryan re-tweeted the above video and included the hashtag #BryanvsAngle but that tweet has since been deleted.

Kurt Angle Believes The Undertaker Is Not Done With Wrestling Yet

11

Despite his apparent retirement at WrestleMania earlier this year, you can never really rule out a possible surprise appearance of the Undertaker on a WWE event somewhere down the line because of the mystique surrounding his character.

However, when it comes to him possibly wrestling again, the opinions are divided as many believe that his gesture at Mania indicated his retirement from the in-ring action while others think that WWE will try to call him again as long as they can because of the massive appeal.

And it appears that the Raw General Manager Kurt Angle belongs to the second group as he believes that Taker is not done with wrestling just yet.

During a recent Q&A session on his official Facebook page, a fan asked Kurt Angle about the retirement of the Dead Man and if he wishes that he had a match with him at WrestleMania.

Replying to it, the Raw GM said that in his opinion, the former World Champion is not done just yet and it would be dream come true to face him at the Show Of Shows:

“My opinion? He’s not done yet, but that’s my opinion. And to wrestle Taker at Mania? That’s a dream come true. Everybody wants Taker at Mania.”

It’s worth mentioning here that just recently, an alleged photo of The Undertaker boarding a flight to New York started rumours of him appearing at SummerSlam. While Taker ended up not being a part of the PPV in any capacity, many still believe that he can appear on the following episode of Raw or SmackDown.

John Cena Teasing An Appearance For Tonight’s RAW

9

After a successful win over SummerSlam over Baron Corbin that many are considering a burial of the former Money in the Bank briefcase holder, John Cena is gearing up for a busy Monday. Cena and the Bella Twins return to NBC’s TODAY show this morning to discuss their hit E! Network show Total Bellas. After that, Cena says he “might take someone up on an offer and tagged @WWE.

It sounds like Cena could be headed to the Barclays Center, host venue of tonight’s episode of Monday Night RAW. That offer could be a reference to this tweet by Roman Reigns from last month:

The Barclays Center is also advertising Cena for tonight:

“Free Agent” John Cena is advertised for most upcoming episodes of RAW leading up to September’s No Mercy pay-per-view (9/24) from Los Angeles. As reported earlier this month, he’ll be wrestling Samoa Joe at several events leading up to No Mercy.

WWE RAW Preview: SummerSlam Fallout

3

Tonight’s edition of WWE RAW take places from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, the host venue of NXT Takeover and last night’s SummerSlam.

The show will feature fallout from SummerSlam, including Universal Champion Brock Lesnar retaining the title in the Fatal 4 Way main event. The Barclays Center tweeted last week that Lesnar would be on hand tonight, but quickly pulled the announcement once word started to spread and fans wondered if the venue had given away a spoiler.

No matches have been announced for RAW as of this writing, but we should hear from new RAW Women’s Champion Sasha Banks, new WWE Cruiserweight Champion Neville and new RAW Tag Team Champions Seth Rollins & Dean Ambrose.

WWE.com is focusing on the following items for the show:

– The legend of The Beast lives on

– Will Seth Rollins & Dean Ambrose be able to function cohesively as Raw Tag Team Champions?

– Will Titus Worldwide get Akira Tozawa a hasty rematch?

– The Demon reigns over The New Face of Fear

– Sasha Banks withstands “Five Feet of Fury”

Several NXT Stars Expected To Be Called Up To The Main Roster Soon

30

In the past several years it has somewhat become a tradition to call up multiple NXT Superstars to the Main Roster in the weeks following WrestleMania and now it appears the company will be following the same trend after SummerSlam as well.

The groundwork for this was laid this past Saturday night when both Kurt Angle and Daniel Bryan attended the NXT Takeover: Brooklyn III event in person, apparently ‘scouting talents’ for their respective Brands.

WWE is expected to call up almost half a dozen current NXT Star to the Main Roster. While no timeline has been specified for their call up, they are expected to debut in the upcoming weeks.

The most mentionable name who is expected to be moved from NXT soon is none other than the former NXT Champion Bobby Roode. Roode lost his championship at the Takeover event this past week.

While it’s not known which brand the former Champion is headed to, Dave Meltzer noted on the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Radio that the Officials are very high on him and he is expected to be treated as one of the ‘top 5’ superstars in whichever roster he joins.

Other names expected to be called up soon include Peyton Royce, Billie Kay, Hideo Itami, No Way Jose and The Authors of Pain, who also lost their NXT Tag Team Championships on the latest Takeover event.

WWE SummerSlam 2017 Recap & Reaction

46

Kickoff Show:

The Miztourage defeated The Hardy Boyz & Jason Jordan

The Miz connected with the Skull Crushing Finale on Jason Jordan for the victory.

Neville defeated Akira Tozawa to become the new Cruiserweight Champion

Akira Tozawa went for the Senton Bomb but Neville got his knees up. Neville then hit the Red Arrow onto Tozawa’s back for the victory.

Elias performed a song for the Barclays Center and insulted them several times throughout the performance.

The Usos defeated New Day to become the new SmackDown Tag Team Champions

The Usos isolated Big E in the ring and connected with a series of Superkicks followed by two Splashes off the top rope for the pinfall victory.

Main Card:

John Cena vs Baron Corbin

Cena started out the match laughing and putting on JBL’s hat outside the ring. Corbin then took control of the match early and was taunting Cena the entire time he was beating him down. Corbin leveled Cena with a Clothesline for a two count. Corbin got pissed off that Cena was able to kick out and started shouting in the ring.

Cena launched at Corbin but Baron caught him and slammed him to the mat. Corbin then went for the pinfall but Cena once again kicked out. Corbin once again became frustrated and started shouting at the referee and the crowd in the Barclays Center. Cena connected with a Dropkick onto Corbin but Baron shrugged it off and punched Cena in the face. The crowd in the Barclays Center started chanting “where is your briefcase?” and Corbin became distracted.

Cena took advantage and hit Corbin with a couple of shoulder tackles. Cena went for the Five Knuckle Shuffle but Corbin got out of the way. Corbin then hit a ridiculous Chokeslam Backbreaker for a two count. Cena planted Corbin with a Tornado DDT off the second rope and then hit the Five Knuckle Shuffle. Cena went for the AA but Corbin shoved him into the ropes and then planted him with Deep Six for a two count.

Corbin exposed his elbow and proceeded to bash Cena in the face with it. Corbin then removed his shirt and then beatdown Cena in the corner. Cena leveled Corbin with a Clothesline and then hit the Attitude Adjustment for the victory.

Winner: John Cena

Reaction: Well, I don’t know what else to say besides Corbin is buried right now. He was embarrassed on Tuesday’s SmackDown and then lost via one Attitude Adjustment. I have no idea where Corbin goes from here. The match itself was alright, but the ending makes zero sense to me. I was expecting Corbin to attack Cena after the match, but instead he just tucked his tail between his legs and walked backstage. I don’t get it at all.

SmackDown Women’s Championship: Naomi (c) vs Natalya

Natalya slapped Naomi in the face to start off the match. Natalya then attacked Naomi in the corner and then slammed her to the mat. Naomi battled back and delivered a slap of her own to Natalya and Natalya rolled out of the ring. Naomi got on the ring apron and booted Natalya in the face. Naomi then connected with a Blockbuster off the ring apron.

The action returned to the ring and Natalya took control. Natalya stomped on Naomi in the corner and the referee was forced to break it up. Natalya then posed in the ring and then planted Naomi with a Suplex for a two count. Carmella and Ellsworth were shown watching the match backstage. Carmella was holding the MITB briefcase.

Naomi went for a roll up but Natalya kicked out at two and then leveled Naomi with a Clothesline. Naomi connected with a couple of kicks but Natalya responded by slamming her to the mat with a two count. Natalya then shouted “shut up” at the crowd who wasn’t making any noise at all. Natalya locked in the Abdominal Stretch in the middle of the ring.

Naomi battled out of the hold but Natalya once again connected with a Clothesline for a two count. Naomi hit a Russian Leg Sweep off the second rope and both Superstars crashed to the mat. Both Superstars got back to their feet and traded punches. Naomi got the upper-hand and connected with a spin kick. Naomi then slammed Natalya’s head into the mat for a two count.

Naomi hit a series of kicks but Natalya grabbed her leg and Naomi did a split in the ring. Natalya then hit a Dropkick to Naomi’s face for a two count. Naomi hung up Natalya between the ropes and then booted her in the back. Naomi then went to the ring apron and connected with a Leg Drop for a two count.
