AJ Styles on the Internet’s Effect on Wrestling & the Need for Surprises, Kurt Angle, John Cena

21

SmackDown Live star AJ Styles recently participated in a media conference call. Here are some highlights, courtesy of Sportskeeda.com:

The Internet’s effect on wrestling & the need for more surprises:

“WWE right now is like, there are so many things on the internet that shouldn’t be. That really bothers me. That hurts surprises, that hurts a lot of things. Hopefully, that will be taken care of so that we can give you the surprises that everybody wants. We got to tell a story out here, and you know that the best movies are the ones you didn’t see coming. We’re doing that same thing, and when things are leaked it bothers me. But we definitely try to give you guys surprises, but sometimes it’s hard.”

Kurt Angle wanting to wrestle him again:

“I would love to get in the ring with Kurt Angle again. Whether or not that will ever happen, who knows. I’m very excited that he’s in the WWE Hall of Fame. I know how much this means to him, and it’s a big deal. Even when we were with a different company, he still talked about WWE so I know this is a big deal to Kurt Angle, and I’m very happy for him. And as far as other performers, I would love to have gotten into the ring with a bunch of them. But you know, that’s not gonna happen. I would certainly have been able to learn from some of them. And there are tonnes of them; too many to name. For me it’s not just the fact of getting in the ring with them, it’s about learning from them.”

His thoughts on John Cena after working with him several times:

“Regardless of what anyone else thinks about John Cena, I respect him. They can boo him or say he sucks; the guy is one of the hardest workers in the WWE. He’s been here on top for a long time, and there’s no way he can do that without being one of the toughest, one of the best, and one of the most experienced guys in the business. John Cena has earned my respect, and that’s why we’ve had incredible matches.”

Austin Aries to Interview Himself Tonight on 205 Live

14

Austin Aries has announced he has an exclusive 1-on-1 interview planned for tonight’s 205 Live; he will be interviewing himself.

Crowd Reaction to Austin Aries

The always knowledgeable crowd in Chicago last night loved Austin Aries. During his interview with Neville, fans were chanting his name just as they had done so during a cruiserweight match earlier in the evening. The segment resulted in Aries attacking Neville, potentially building to a cruiserweight title match between the two.

The 38-year old Aries is a 2x ROH world champion and 1x TNA world champion. He joined NXT last January but had been sitting in on commentary for cruiserweight matches since suffering an orbital fracture last October.

Tomoaki Honma Injury Update

2

Tomoaki Honma, one-half of the World Tag League Champions last year with Togi Makabe, was badly injured in a match on Friday.

Honma landed wrong when taking a DDT from Jado and had to be stretchered out of the arena. Immediate concerns were that he suffered a spinal injury.

NJPW Updates Situation

NJPW recently sent out an update on the situation, that has been loosely translated to english. Honma does not have full use of his arms but can grip objects, and does have feeling in his legs. The injury was believed to be to the 3rd and 4th vertebrae.

Honma is still in hospital as doctors do not want anything interfering with his spine. A full recovery, including an in-ring return, is possible however.

NJPW Releases Juice Robinson Mini-Documentary

4

Juice Robinson has moved up the rankings quickly in New Japan Pro Wrestling. The 27 year old Juice made a bold move in 2015, requesting his release from WWE developmental. He had been working in NXT under the name CJ Parker.

Saddled with a 2 dimensional gimmick, Robinson’s choice to leave WWE while only in his mid-20s was daring. Matt Bloom, head trainer at NXT and former NJPW star, made arrangements for him to sign with NJPW and train in their dojo. He debuted for NJPW last March and has gone from opening match jobber to upper mid-card talent in that time.

New Japan Cup

Robinson has been 1/3 of the 6-man tag team champions, challenged for the NEVER Openweight championship, and partnered with Hiroshi Tanahashi in the World Tag League tournament in 2016. Despite his success he was not ranked high enough last year to be entered in either the New Japan Cup or the G1.

His stock has risen high enough now however, that he will be in the cup tournament this year. His first round cup match will be on March 12th vs “the Tokyo Pimp” Yujiro Takahashi from the Bullet Club.

Matt Hardy Files Trademark For ‘Broken’ Name, Sends Warning To Gallows & Anderson

11

Matt Hardy has filed a trademark application to claim ownership of the “Broken Matt Hardy” character, according to a filing at the US Patent & Trademark Office. The application was filed on March 1st, 2017 and is for “Entertainment services, namely, wrestling exhibits and performances by a professional wrestler and entertainer.”

bkh trademark

As previously reported, a dispute is brewing between Matt and Impact Wrestling, with both sides claiming ownership of the Broken character. Even though Matt created his Broken Universe, the new owners of Impact Wrestling feel they’re entitled to the intellectual property of the character based on the nature of their contract and the fact that Broken Matt Hardy first appeared on their show.

Credit to Pro Wrestling Sheet for being the first site to report on this story.

Speaking of Matt Hardy, he once again tweeted at RAW Tag Team Champions Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson on Monday night. This time, he informed Gallows and Anderson during RAW that he will eat them and delete them.

WWE Monday Night Raw Recap & Reaction (3/6)

68

This week’s episode of Monday Night Raw kicked off with Chris Jericho getting a huge reaction from the Chicago crowd. Jericho referred to Chicago as the “birthplace of Y2J” and that tonight is the site of the resurrection of Chris Jericho. Jericho stated that he screwed Kevin Owens out of the Universal Championship last night at Fastlane because Owens turned his back on him three weeks ago. Jericho asked that Kevin Owens come down to the ring and explain why he attacked him during the Festival of Friendship.

Owens came down to the entrance ramp and refused to answer the question because of Jericho’s actions last night at Fastlane. Owens then admitted that Jericho was never his best friend. Owens said that Jericho was just a tool and that Owens used him to hold onto the Universal Championship. Owens said that Jericho went from a tool to a burden once he accepted the match with Goldberg on his behalf. Owens stated that the biggest mistake of Jericho’s life was costing him the Universal Championship.

Jericho disagreed and claimed that his biggest mistake was ever trusting Kevin Owens. Jericho claimed that he had thousands of friends here tonight and the entire Chicago crowd cheered. Jericho challenged Owens to a match at Wrestlemania. Owens said that he is guaranteed a rematch for the Universal Championship whenever he wants. Owens accepted the match as long as Jericho puts his United States Championship on the line. Jericho agreed and the match is now official for Wrestlemania.

Jericho then challenged Owens to come down to the ring and fight. Owens charged the ring and started to brawl with Jericho. Samoa Joe then attacked Jericho from behind. Sami Zayn then came down to the ring with a chair and hit Joe with it. Owens and Joe then teamed up to beatdown Sami Zayn. Jericho then got back up and hit both Joe and Owens with the chair.

Kevin Owens vs Sami Zayn

The match was already underway when Raw returned from a commercial break. Owens connected with a Cannonball and went for a Pop-up Powerbomb but Zayn connected with a Dropkick that sent Owens out of the ring. Zayn then leaped from the ring and hit a Moonsault onto Kevin Owens. The match returned to the ring and Owens connected with a Pop-Up Powerbomb but didn’t attempt a cover. Owens connected with a series of punches to the head of Sami Zayn. Owens hit a second Pop-Up Powerbomb for the victory.

Winner: Kevin Owens

Reaction: Monday Night Raw started off with a bang tonight. The promo between Owens and Jericho was very entertaining. The match between Zayn and Owens was short and once again Sami Zayn lost a match without putting up much of a fight.

Cruiserweight Championship Match: Neville (c) vs Rich Swann

The Chicago crowd started to chant “CM Punk!” as the match started. The match quickly spilled outside the ring and Neville slammed Swann’s head into the ring apron. Raw went to a commercial break with Neville completely in control of the match.

When Raw returned, Neville had a Chinlock applied to Swann in the middle of the ring. The crowd started to chant “Austin Aries” as Swann connected with a couple of punches to Neville on the ring apron. Swann landed a kick then knocked Neville to the floor outside the ring. Swann climbed to the top rope and hit a Swanton onto Neville while he was still outside the ring. Back in the ring, Swann hit a Michinoku Driver for a two count. Neville fought back and landed a Superplex off the top rope. Neville went for a cover but Swann was able to avoid it by rolling out of the ring. Neville followed Swann out of the ring and launched him into the barricade as Raw went to another commercial break. Swann connected with a Superkick for a two count. Swann hit another kick and went for the Phoenix Splash off the top rope but Neville rolled out of the way. Neville then applied the Rings of Saturn for the submission victory.

After the match, Neville was interviewed by Austin Aries. The crowd started to chant “Austin Aries!” once again and Aries thanked the Chicago crowd. Neville told all of his doubters to take a look at him now and raised the Cruiserweight Championship title above his head. Neville stated that their is nobody on 205 Live that holds a candle to the king of the Cruiserweight. Aries asked Neville if he was sure that there was nobody on 205 Live that was on his level. The crowd once again started to chant “Austin Aries!”. Neville got angry and said that Aries wasn’t even close to being on his level. Neville told Aries to go back to his announcer’s desk and make cheap little jokes. Neville threatened to re-break Aries’ orbital socket.

Aries finally had enough and hit Neville in the head with the microphone. Aries then knocked Neville out of the ring. Neville retreated as Aries stood tall in the ring and raised the Cruiserweight Championship.

Winner & Still Cruiserweight Champion: Neville

Reaction: The match between Neville and Rich Swann was very good. When the Cruiserweights are given time they have the ability to put on great matches. This match was given plenty of time and hopefully that becomes a trend on Raw in the weeks to come. The entire first hour of Raw was very entertaining. It has been rumored for awhile that Aries will face Neville at Wrestlemania. It  is looking like that is going to happen and I cannot wait to see it.

Goldberg came down to the ring and raised the Universal Championship to a mixed reaction from the crowd. Goldberg said that this title belongs to the WWE Universe and that he could not have done it without them. The crowd started to chant “CM Punk!” again. Paul Heyman interrupted and came out from backstage. Heyman said that he did not come to the arena and introduced Brock Lesnar. Brock and Heyman then circled the ring as Goldberg stared at them. Lesnar got into the ring and had a stare down with Goldberg. Heyman stated that Lesnar came here tonight to shake Goldberg’s hand and congratulate Goldberg on becoming the Universal Champion. Heyman claimed that Lesnar is willing to shake Goldberg’s hand because Goldberg has proven to be every bit the conquerer that Lesnar is. Heyman then told Goldberg that he has a spoiler for Wrestlemania and it was that Lesnar will take the Universal Championship from him. Lesnar then extended his hand and Heyman stated that after Wrestlemania, Goldberg will become known as Lesnar’s bitch. Lesnar then hit Goldberg with an F-5.

Reaction: I enjoyed this promo because it got right to the point. Goldberg didn’t say much before Heyman interrupted. Lesnar fired the first shot and planted Goldberg with an F-5. The only negative thing about this segment was the crowd once again chanting “CM Punk” for no reason.

Raw Tag Team Championship Match: Gallows & Anderson (c) vs Enzo & Cass

Sheamus and Cesaro had an argument with Enzo & Cass earlier in the night. Enzo & Cass controlled the first couple of minutes of the match and Sheamus & Cesaro walked down to the entrance ramp. Raw went to a commercial break with Enzo shouting at Sheamus & Cesaro from the ring. When Raw returned, Gallows and Anderson were taking turns beating the hell out of Enzo. Enzo hit a DDT on Gallows and tagged in Cass. Gallows tagged in Anderson as well. Cass hit the Empire Elbow on Anderson for a two count. Enzo knocked Gallows out of the ring and hit a Suicide Dive onto him. Enzo then celebrated the move but during the celebration he accidentally knocked Cesaro’s coffee out of his hand. Cesaro then chased Enzo and wound up hitting Anderson. Things broke down and everyone started brawling. Cesaro and Sheamus were the last ones standing in the ring.

Winners via DQ: Gallows & Anderson

Sheamus & Cesaro were fighting with Enzo & Cass backstage. Raw GM Mick Foley stepped and a made a match for next week on Raw. Enzo & Cass will face Sheamus & Cesaro and the winner will go on to face Gallows & Anderson at Wrestlemania for the Raw Tag Team Championship. Stephanie McMahon then showed up and told Mick Foley to come to her office.

Akira Tozawa vs Ariya Daivari

Daivari controlled the match early. Tozawa fought back and hit a Suicide Dive onto Daivari outside the ring. Back in the ring, Tozawa connected with a German Suplex for the victory. Tozawa then grabbed a microphone and called out Brian Kendrick to fight him face to face. Kendrick came down to entrance ramp and told Tozawa that he will answer his challenge tomorrow night on 205 Live.

Winner: Akira Tozawa

The New Day came down to the ring with their ice cream cart. Big E made out the cart for some reason.

New Day vs The Shining Stars

The Shining Stars took out Kofi and then decided to surround Xavier Woods by the ice cream cart. Big E and Kofi then took out both Primo and Epico outside the ring. Big E and Kofi then hit the Midnight Hour for the pinfall victory.

Winner: New Day

Reaction: The second hour of Raw was quite boring. The New Day used to be one of my favorite parts of Raw. Now, their entire act has grown stale and their promos are about ice cream. The tag division on Raw has a bunch of talent but they have consistently been misused.

Bayley joined Mick Foley in there ring. Bayley said that she doesn’t feel like a champion tonight because Sasha Banks interfered in her match last night against Charlotte. Foley said that it doesn’t matter how she got there, Bayley is going to Wrestlemania. Mick Foley then asked Bayley who her opponent will be at Wrestlemania. Sasha Banks then interrupted and challenged Bayley to a match at Wrestlemania. Mick Foley then asked the crowd if they wanted to see that match and the crowd chanted “yes!”.

Charlotte and Dana Brooke then joined the party. Charlotte said that Sasha Banks is using Bayley and is pretending to be her friend. Charlotte called herself a victim and stated that she was robbed of her PPV streak and her title shot last night at Fastlane. Stephanie McMahon came down to the ring and the entire crowd “CM Punk!”. Stephanie said the entire crowd was just like CM Punk and called them all losers. That didn’t quiet the crowd down at all and they once again chanted “CM Punk!”. Stephanie McMahon stated that Charlotte deserved the match against Bayley at Wrestlemania.  Foley said that Sasha Banks should be in the match as well. Stephanie McMahon then made a match between Bayley and Sasha Banks. If Sasha Banks wins, the match at Wrestlemania will be a Triple Threat between Bayley, Charlotte and Sasha Banks.

Bayley vs Sasha Banks

This match started really slow. Charlotte joined commentary and claimed that Bayley has never really defeated her one on one. Byron Saxton pointed out that Bayley has defeated Charlotte four times now. Corey Graves called Saxton an idiot. Sasha hit an Arm Drag on Bayley and pointed to the Wrestlemania sign. Bayley hit a Splash on Sasha in the corner and then applied an Arm Bar. Sasha fought back and leveled Bayley with a Clothesline and Raw went to a commercial break.

When Raw returned, Bayley and Sasha tried to roll each other up a bunch of times. Charlotte and Dana Brooke made their way down to the ring as Sasha and Bayley battled in the ring. Sasha locked in the Bank Statement but Bayley made her way to the bottom rope and the hold was broken. Sasha applied the Bank Statement again in the middle of the ring. Dana then got up on the ring apron and distracted the referee. Charlotte tried to interfere but Sasha kicked her. Bayley then tapped out to the Bank Statement. Charlotte then kicked Bayley and Sasha in the face after the match and posed with the Raw Women’s Championship. As of now, it will be Bayley versus Sasha Banks versus Charlotte at Wrestlemania.

Winner: Sasha Banks

Reaction: Both the promo and the match were clunky as hell. Nia Jax was nowhere to be found tonight. I’m assuming that she will be added to the match at Wrestlemania in the next few weeks. I’m surprised that she didn’t show up and attack Sasha after the match. I hope that some women from NXT join the main roster after Wrestlemania because I’ve been tired of these storylines on Raw for some time now. The crowd doesn’t seem too invested in this storyline as well. Charlotte, Sasha Banks and Bayley can certainly put on an excellent match at Wrestlemania. However, there really isn’t any buzz for that match right now. Instead of having Bayley win the title at Wrestlemania, the WWE gave that away on an episode of Raw. Instead of Charlotte lose her undefeated streak at PPVs at Wrestlemania, the WWE gave that away last night at Fastlane. I think both of those moments should have been saved for the biggest show of the year.

The WWE aired a video of Seth Rollins training to try to get healthy before Wrestlemania. Triple H was interviewed via satellite and he said that he hopes that Rollins listens to the WWE medical staff. Triple H stated that it would be foolish of Rollins to try and rush back in time for Wrestlemania. Triple H said that Rollins was a liar for referring to himself as “the man”. Triple H stated that if Rollins shows up at Wrestlemania against doctor’s orders it will be the last thing he ever does in a WWE ring.

Samoa Joe vs Chris Jericho

Joe started out he match in control and beatdown Jericho in the corner. Joe continued to dominate for the next few minutes and locked in an Arm Bar in the middle of the ring. Jericho battled back and went for the Walls of Jericho but Joe avoided it. Jericho connected with a kick to Joe’s head and followed it up with a Dropkick that knocked Joe out of the ring. Joe tried to get back into the ring but Jericho landed another Dropkick that knocked Joe back down. Jericho went for a Baseball Slide while Joe was by the ring apron. Joe moved out of the way and applied the Coquina Clutch outside the ring. Joe rolled back into the ring at the count of nine and won the match by countout. Joe tried to attack Jericho after the match but Jericho hit a Codebreaker.

Winner via Countout: Samoa Joe

Braun Strowman called out Roman Reigns and demanded that he come to the ring and fight him. Roman’s music hit but it was quickly interrupted by The Undertaker’s music. The Undertaker emerged and the crowd went crazy as Braun Strowman looked on from inside the ring. The Undertaker and Strowman had a stare down in the ring as the crowd chanted “holy sh**!”. Braun got out of the ring and exited through the crowd. Roman Reigns then came out and the crowd loudly booed. Reigns was back to wearing boots and joined The Undertaker in the ring. Reigns said that Strowman was calling him out and not The Undertaker. Reigns said that “this was his yard now”. Reigns and The Undertaker stared at the Wrestlemania sign above the ring for a moment. The Undertaker then Chokeslammed Roman Reigns and left the ring.

Reaction: I have a few thoughts about the ending of tonight’s episode of Raw. First, it is always awesome to see The Undertaker in a WWE ring. There is nobody like The Undertaker and there will never be anyone like him the future. I don’t understand why the WWE spent all this time building up Braun Strowman as a monster only to feed him to Roman Reigns last night. He also ran away from The Undertaker tonight and looked weak. The match between The Undertaker and Roman Reigns interests me on a bunch of levels. I think it has the potential to be a solid match, but that all depends on The Undertaker’s health and what he can do in the ring. I’m very interested in the outcome of that match. Roman Reigns was booed out of the building tonight. The guy cannot win right now. The crowd just hates him. Reigns has a bunch of fans but I don’t think too many of them will be traveling to Orlando for Wrestlemania.

If Roman Reigns wins, I can already see people getting very pissed off at Wrestlemania. I would love to see Roman Reigns as a heel for this match but that doesn’t seem to be in the cards right now. The fans and the WWE seem to be in a battle over if Roman Reigns is indeed “The Guy”. The atmosphere for this match at Wrestlemania will be incredible. Roman Reigns is in tough spot and I’m glad I don’t have to decide who wins. I’d much rather sit back and marvel at the outrage that will occur if Reigns defeats The Undertaker with a Spear at Wrestlemania. Overall, tonight’s episode of Raw was better than most since the brand split. It still had a bunch of filler segments and matches that hardly anyone cared about. The first hour was very good, the Lesnar and Goldberg segment was solid and the ending was entertaining.

NJPW 45th Anniversary Show
March 6th 2017
Ota City General Gymnasium
Don Callis and Kevin Kelly on commentary

Manabu  Nakanishi vs. Tomoyuki Oka
The big veteran Nakanishi takes on the young lion Oka in the opener. Oka submits to Nakanishi’s torture rack.
Winner: Nakanishi via submission

Hirooki Goto, Yoshi Hashi, Jado and Gedo (CHAOS) vs. Minoru Suzuki, Taka Michinoku, El Desperado and Davey Boy Smith Jr. (Suzuki-Gun)
Multi-person tag match with CHAOS taking on Suzuki-Gun. Since returning from NOAH, Suzuki-Gun has done a lot of losing. That trend continues here as Yoshi-Hashi forces Taka to submit to a butterfly lock.
Winners: CHAOS (Yoshi-Hashi forced Taka to submit)

Kenny Omega, Yujiro Takahashi, Tonga Loa, Tama Tonga and Bad Luck Fale (Bullet Club) vs. Togi Makabe, David Finlay, Tiger Mask, Yuji Nagata and Jushin Liger
Kenny Omega has made it clear that he does not take his shirt of for big matches. He actually said this to the camera. This was evidently not a big match.
They gave an update on Honma’s injury. He’s still in the hospital, but regaining the use of his extremities and promises to be back.
This was the only match for Bullet Club tonight, but 5 of them will take part in the New Japan Cup which starts this weekend.
At one point Kenny Omega was choking Tiger Mask with a large stick and saying “I’m cheating” to the camera.
Finish of the match came when Bad Luck Fale hit Finlay with the Tongan death spike. They played up Fale’s opening round match with Michael Elgin on March 11th a bit.
Winners: Bullet Club (Fale pinned Finlay)

IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag Team Championship
Roppongi Vice (c) (CHAOS) vs. Taichi and Kanemaru (Suzuki-Gun)
Suzuki-Gun attacked Roppongi Vice during their entrance. Kelly and Romero played up how successful Kanemaru and Taichi were in NOAH. There was a lot of interference from El Desperado on the outside for Suzuki-Gun.
Finish of the match came when Kanemaru hit a diving DDT from the top on Romero for the pin.
Winners: Taichi and Kanemaru (new champions)

After the match Gedo and Jado came to the ring. Suzuki-Gun taunted the titles at them a bit, indicating there will be a future matchup between the two teams in the near future.

British Heavyweight Championship
Katsuyori Shibata (c) vs. Zack Sabre Jr.
Not surprisingly there was a lot of technical wrestling to start this match off. Shibata defeated Sabre Jr. for the title, this is his rematch tonight. Minoru Suzuki, who will meet Shibata in the first round of the New Japan Cup, hits the ring and Suzuki-Gun takes out Shibata. Zack Sabre Jr then hits the PK on Shibata for the win. Zack Sabre Jr has aligned with Suzuki-Gun.
Winner: Zack Sabre Jr. (new champion)

IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Championships
Tomohiro Ishii and Toru Yano (c)(CHAOS) vs. Satoshi Kojima and Hiroyoshi Tenzan
Yano tried to go for his normal low blow and roll-up for the win but Tenzan broke it up. Kojima then hit Yano with a big lariat for the win. Nagata and Nakanishi came out to celebrate the win with them.
Winners: Tenzan and Kojima (new champions) (6th time as champions)

Hiroshi Tanahashi, Kushida, Juice Robinson, and Michael Elgin vs. Sanada, Evil, Tetsuya Naito, and Bushi (Los Ingobernables)
Surprising finish here as Naito pinned Juice Robinson after hitting Destino. There has been a rivalry brewing here, which would be quite an opportunity for Robinson. After the match Evil attacked Tanahashi, which is a preview of their first round match this weekend. Naito also continued to beat up Robinson after the bell.
Winners: Los Ingobernables (Naito pinned Robinson)

IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Championship
Hiromu Takahashi (c)(Los Ingobernables) vs. Ryusuke Taguchi
Clean victory for Takahashi. Taguchi had him in the ankle lock on 3 occassions, but Takahashi didn’t tap and got out each time. So they are probably trying to build him up as tough. After the match Takahashi cut a screaming promo that was directed at Kushida. Somewhat predictably this brought out Kushida. Looks like it will be former 4x champion Kushida who is next to get a title shot.

The March 6th edition of WWE RAW was the first episode after their Fastlane pay-per-view, and aired live at 8 PM ET from the Allstate Arena in Chicago, IL.

– Chris Jericho comes out to the ring and starts off cutting a babyface promo to the Chicago crowd. He says tonight he will be re-born. Jericho explains that the reason for him helping Goldberg win last night was simple, because Owens stabbed him in the back, and now he calls out Jericho to face him man to man. Jericho wants Owens to tell him face to face why he turned on him. Owens comes out to the stage in his ring gear and indicates that he won’t answer Jericho. Jericho tells him to be quiet… quiet… quiet… quiet… and asks him again, why he betrayed him. Owens says he didn’t stab his best friend in the back, because Jericho was never his best friend. Owens says Triple H told him to do whatever it takes to keep the title, so Owens used Jericho as a tool to watch his back. Owens says Jericho screwed up and went from being a tool to a burden, so Owens took him out. Owens says he knows he would have beaten Goldberg if it wasn’t for Jericho. Jericho says he doesn’t want Owens to be his friend, because he has the “Friends of Jericho” in the crowd in Chicago, which prompts a Y2J chant. Jericho says costing Owens his Universal Title doesn’t make them even, and Jericho is just getting started getting back at Owens. Jericho then challenges Owens to a match at WrestleMania. Owens says he’ll accept if Jericho puts his U.S. Title on the line, and Jericho accepts. This leads to Owens hitting the ring and they start brawling. Samoa Joe comes in from behind and joins Jericho in beating down Jericho. Sami Zayn runs in for the save and he’s got a steel chair. Owens and Joe overpower Zayn, but now Jericho grabs the chair and he lays out the heels. Joe and Owens retreat which Jericho and Zayn stare them down from the ring.

Kevin Owens def. Sami Zayn: This one was made during the commercial break, and we’re off with Owens and Zayn brawling out to ringside early on. Back in the ring, Owens hits a cannonball on Zayn in the corner. Zayn ducks a clothesline and throws Owens outside, then follows up with a suicide dive. Back in the ring, Owens immediately takes out Zayn with a Pop Up Powerbomb out of nowhere, but Owens is too hurt to pin. Owens continues beating down Zayn and hits a second Pop Up Powerbomb for the win.

– Chris Jericho vs. Samoa Joe in singles action is booked for later tonight.

Neville def. Rich Swann: Austin Aries is on commentary for this one, and he once again shows us his video package. Swann starts off with right hands on Neville then sends him rolling outside with a dropkick. Swann follows him out and throws Neville into the fan barricade. Neville slams Swann head-first into the ring apron, then takes him in the ring to continue the offense. We hear an “Austin Aries” chant from the crowd. Swann kicks Neville out to ringside then heads to the top rope. Swann hits a well-executed 450 splash off the top rope down onto Neville who was standing on the ringside floor. Back in the ring, Swann hits a kick and a Michinouku Driver for a two count. Neville comes back with a superplex off the top that sends Neville rolling out to ringside. Neville follows Swann outside and he beats down the challenger near the commentary tables. Back in the ring, Swann comes back with a suplex and a superkick for a two count. Swann hits another kick to the head then goes for the Phoenix Splash, but Neville rolls out of the way. Neville puts Swann into the Rings of Saturn for the win via submission.

– After the match, Austin Aries heads to the ring to interview Neville about his win, but the crowd chants for Aries. Neville says there’s nobody in the cruiserweight division who can hold a candle to him. Aries asks Neville if he’s sure there’s no one at his level, and the crowd chants “Austin Aries” again. Aries tells Neville the WWE Universe disagrees with him. Neville orders Aries to get out of the ring and taunts him for working as a commentator. Aries says he’s just trying to do his job, and he has one more question. Aries hits Neville with the mic and follows up with a running elbow to the face that sends Neville rolling outside. Neville retreats up the ramp while Aries holds the Cruiserweight Title in the ring.

– Goldberg comes out to the ring next with his new WWE Universal Title. Goldberg thanks the fans for supporting him, and says he’s going to share some information with them. The crowd starts chanting for CM Punk, which Goldberg nods his head in agreement with. Paul Heyman interrupts next and says he didn’t come here tonight alone. Heyman introduces Brock Lesnar, and they head down to the ring together. Lesnar walks over right in front of Goldberg, and Heyman says Lesnar is here tonight to shake Goldberg’s hand and congratulate him on winning the Universal Title. Heyman says Goldberg has earned their respect because he’s proven himself to be the real deal, but Lesnar will be the winner at WrestleMania. Goldberg declines to shake Lesnar’s hand, and Heyman keeps talking. Heyman says after WrestleMania, people will be calling Goldberg “Brock’s bitch.” This causes Goldberg to turn his head away from Lesnar, and Lesnar hits an F-5 on Goldberg. Lesnar and Heyman head backstage while Goldberg is in the ring, and he looks pissed off.

Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson (c) vs. Enzo & Cass – No Contest: The tag titles are on the line in this one. Enzo misses a dropkick early on against Gallows and tags in Big Cass. Gallows brings Cass into his corner with punches and Anderson tags in. Cass throws Anderson outside and tags in Enzo. Enzo gears up for a suicide dive, but Anderson moves. Sheamus and Cesaro come out to watch, and it distracts Enzo and Cass. Cass tags in and works on Anderson. Cass hits the Empire Elbow and pins, but Gallows breaks up the pin. Cass throws Gallows to the outside, then Enzo hits a suicide dive on him. Enzo accidentally knocks Cesaro’s coffee all over him and Sheamus at ringside. Cesaro and Sheamus hit the ring and all hell breaks loose. When the dust settles, Enzo has Cesaro in a sleeper hold, but Sheamus Brogue Kicks Enzo right off of Cesaro. Cesaro and Sheamus head to the back while the others recover.

– We go backstage and see Enzo an Cass arguing with Cesaro and Sheamus. Foley sets up a match between them, where the winners will face Gallows and Anderson at WrestleMania. Foley says he’s going to try to have a nice day. Stephanie McMahon walks up behind him and says if he wants to have a nice day, to follow her to her office right now.

Akira Tozawa def. Daivari: Daivari starts off in control, but Tozawa mounts a comeback after faking out Daivari. Tozawa knocks Daivari outside with a kick and follows up with a suicide dive. Back in the ring, Tozawa hits a German suplex for the win after a short match. Tozawa calls out Kendrick after the match. Kendrick comes out to the stage and tells him to be careful what he wishes for, then heads to the back.

The New Day def. The Shining Stars: The New Day cut a promo about ice cream before the match. Primo and Epico get in some offense early on, then they take aim at the ice cream cart at ringside. Kofi comes from the ring with a suicide dive onto Primo and Epico at ringside, then back in the ring Big E hits the Big Ending for the win after a very short match. The New Day celebrates with their ice cream cart after the match.

– Mick Foley is in the ring and he brings out Bayley. Bayley says she’s glad to be heading to WrestleMania, but it doesn’t feel right because Sasha interfered. Sasha comes out next, and Charlotte quickly interrupts. Charlotte complains about being robbed at Fastlane due to Sasha’s interference. Stephanie McMahon comes out and the first thing she says is Foley isn’t the boss, and neither is Sasha, Steph is. Stephanie says all Chicagoans are losers just like CM Punk. Stephanie says Bayley would not be Champion if it weren’t for Sasha’s interference, and Charlotte was robbed. Stephanie makes a match for right now: Sasha Banks vs. Bayley, and if Sasha wins, she joins the Women’s Title match at WrestleMania to make it a three-way.

Sasha Banks def. Bayley (c): This one is a non-title match. Charlotte and Dana Brooke are on commentary. Bayley and Sasha trade arm locks and takedowns in the evenly-matched opening moments. Sasha starts firing up and takes control of things. Sasha goes for a dive on Bayley to the outside but Bayley moves out of the way. Back in the ring, Sasha drops the champion with a lariat. Sasha is working on Bayley’s arm and then hits several elbows to the face. Bayley stops Sasha’s momentum with a back suplex, then a spear in the corner. Charlotte and Dana come down to ringside. Sasha hits some knees on Bayley then puts her in the crossface, but Bayley reaches the ropes. Sasha hits the backstabber then gets Bayley in the Banks Statement again. Charlotte tries to interfere, but Sasha kicks her off the apron, and rolls back to re-apply the Banks Statement on Bayley. Bayley taps out, and now Sasha has won a post at WrestleMania. Charlotte hits the ring after the match and hits a big boot on Sasha, then on Bayley.

– We get an extended look at Seth Rollins in the gym rehabbing his torn MCL. Rollins talks about how bad he wants to compete at WrestleMania.

– Michael Cole introduces Triple H live “via satellite” who comments on Rollins’ rehab. Triple H says Rollins should listen to the experts and give up on trying to return for WrestleMania. The Game continues to trash Rollins, and says if Rollins shows up at WrestleMania it’ll be the last thing he ever does in a WWE ring.

Samoa Joe def. Chris Jericho via countout: Joe starts by backing Jericho up in the corner and pummeling on him. Jericho fights back with elbows and chops, until Joe drops him with a Pele kick. There’s back-and-forth offense between both men until Joe hits a senton drop for a two count. Joe now starts wearing down Jericho with several holds on the mat. Jericho fights his way up and goes for the Walls of Jericho, but Joe kicks him off. Jericho sends Joe rolling to the outside with a right hand and some kicks. Jericho follows him outside, but Joe immediately catches him in the Coquina Clutch. Joe has it locked in on the floor at ringside, and the ref starts counting them out. Joe has Jericho choked out, then he rolls back in the ring before the referee’s ten count and he wins via countout. After the bell, Joe drags Jericho into the ring, but Jericho hits a Codebreaker on him to back him off. Joe retreats to the back as Jericho stares him down from the ring.

– Braun Strowman comes out to the ring and calls out Roman Reigns. Reigns’ music starts, but then the lights go out and we hear the gong. The Undertaker’s music hits and flames start shooting from the stage. The Undertaker comes down to the ring and stands in front of Strowman. Strowman backs off and exits the ring, then leaves through the crowd. Undertaker’s music starts playing, but is then interrupted by Reigns’ music, and Reigns makes his way to the ring. Reigns grabs a microphone and tells Undertaker that this is his yard now. They each look at the WrestleMania sign, then Undertaker chokeslams Reigns.

During the match Minoru Suzuki interfered on Sabre Jr’s behalf and used a Gotch style Piledriver on Shibata, giving Sabre Jr the opportunity to hit his signature Penalty Kick to secure the pinfall victory and win back the RPW title.

After the bout Sabre Jr donned a Suzuki-Gun t shirt and appeared to accept the invitation from Minoru to join the group.

Spike TV: We’re Not Negotiating With Impact Wrestling About U.S. Return

20

Spike TV has publicly denied reports that they’re negotiating to bring Impact Wrestling back to their channel in the United States, after Impact recently signed with their United Kingdom channel. Brian Fritz of The Sporting News reports that Spike representatives told him channel executive Scott Fishman was only at the Impact tapings over the weekend to visit, and they are not in negotiations with Impact Wrestling. Fishman was also reportedly backstage at an Impact taping in January to visit, and he worked closely with the company when they were starting on Spike TV.

Fritz and the reporter of the original article, Ryan Satin of ProWrestlingSheet.com, discussed the conflicting reports on Twitter, which you can read below:

PROGRESS: More Chapter 45 Matches Announced

0

PROGRESS have announced two more bouts for their upcoming Chapter 45 event: ‘Galvanise.’

‘Flash’ Morgan Webster made his in-ring return at Chapter 44 when he teamed with Mark Haskins and Jimmy Havoc against British Strong Style. Although his team took the win it was Havoc that secured the winning pinfall, therefore Webster missed out on a PROGRESS title shot. His opponent for Chapter 44 will be Nathan Cruz, who himself lost at Chapter 44 against his former Origin stable mate El Ligero.

There is a lot at stake in this bout, the uncertain future of WWE contracted talents such as PROGRESS Champion Pete Dunne, Mark Andrews, Trent Seven and WWE UK Champion Tyler Bate opens the door for the next batch of possible main eventers to shine and there is certainly an opportunity for both of these performers to move up to that next level if necessary.

The next announced match is a Semi-Final bout in the Natural Progression Series tournament. This is the first Women’s tournament in company history and the winner will be crowned the first ever PROGRESS Women’s Champion.

Crowd favourite Nixon Newell will be taking on ‘heat magnet’ Jinny. This is Jinny’s first Chapter match in quite some time and she is likely to be win the entire tournament, a win for Nixon would be considered a huge upset but as PROGRESS are looking to establish their official Women’s division surprises could be in store.

Kevin Owens Universal Championship Reign Statistics

35

Kevin Owen’s Universal Championship reign (so far the longest in history) came to an end last night at Fastlane.

Kevin Owens Wins the Universal Championship

After Finn Balor was forced to vacate the title, it was determined the new champion would be crowned via a 4-way elimination match on Raw. Owens qualified for the 4-way match by defeating Neville in a singles match the week before. The 4-way was held on the August 29th 2016 episode of Raw.

In addition to the match crowning Owens as champion, it also kick started the Triple H vs. Seth Rollins feud, when Hunter gave Rollins a pedigree and literally handed the belt to Owens.

Not counting house show results, Owens successfully defended the Universal Championship six times before dropping the belt to Goldberg last night.

Feud with Seth Rollins

With Triple H nowhere to be found for months after helping Owens win the title initially, Owens entered a months long feud with Seth Rollins. While Owens wasn’t able to rely on the help of Triple H, he got plenty from his “best friend” Chris Jericho during this program.

Jericho helped Owens successfully defend the title against Rollins 3 times, first at Clash of Champions, then inside Hell in a Cell, and then again on the Raw after Survivor Series in Toronto. With Rollins out of the title picture, Owens then moved on to a program with Roman Reigns.

Feud with Roman Reigns

Owens’ feud with Roman started while he was teasing a breakup of his friendship with Chris Jericho. It seemed like Jericho was going to turn on Owens and cost him the title. That kind of happened at “Roadblock: End of the Line” when Jericho gave Owens the codebreaker during the Owens vs Reigns title match, causing the DQ. Turns out this was all a rouse and Jericho was just saving the title for his buddy.

Reigns then got another shot at the Rumble, this time with Jericho suspended in a shark cage above the ring. Strowman then saved the title for Owens however, when he interfered and gave Roman a power slam through a table.

Then Owens was scheduled for a title defence against Strowman on Raw, but Roman interfered causing the DQ and inadvertently saving the belt for Owens.

Loss to Goldberg

We still don’t know what Triple H said to Kevin Owens to cause him to turn on Jericho. Whatever it was it didn’t help him out much. Not only was Jericho not there to help Owens, but he actually caused the distraction which allowed Goldberg to get the squash victory in mere seconds.

Total Reign: August 29th 2016 to March 5th 2017
Days as Champion: 188
Title Defences (no including house shows): 6

Cruiserweight Title Match Confirmed for RAW Tonight

5

Neville successfully defended his cruiserweight championship for the first time last night when he defeated Jack Gallagher at Fastlane. Tonight it seems he will have to defend the belt for the second night in a row when he takes on former champion Rich Swann.

Swann and Neville crossed paths backstage at Fastlane.

Cruiserweight Championship

Neville is the fourth champion since WWE debuted the new version of the title. The first champion was crowned in the cruiserweight classic tournament on the network. TJ Perkins beat Gran Metalik in the finals.

Perkins then controversially lost the title to Brian Kendrick, who held it for a month before losing it to Rich Swann. Neville defeated Swann to win the belt, and up until now Swann has been out with injury and unable to cash in his championship rematch. He will get that opportunity tonight however.
