At last night’s WWE NXT live event in Nashville, TN, Carmella sustained a stinger during her match with Eva Marie.  Eva Marie got the pin, won the match and afterwards the doctor threw up the “X” sign signaling for the doctors backstage to make their way out to the ring.

Jim Ross Says Daniel Bryan Can’t Fix WWE’s Declining Ratings

83

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has updated his blog at JRsBarBQ.com with his thoughts on WWE’s declining television ratings. Ross says it’s going to take more than top stars returning for WWE to right the ship and offers some straight-forward, back to basics advice to his former company.

“Amazing that some people think that Daniel Bryan’s return can cure all WWE TV ratings ills alone. Not true. Bryan should not be considered for a return until he is completely, 100% medically cleared of which WWE will insure.

Ratings go down just like live event tickets sales and for the same reasons….the paying customers are not getting what they feel that they want. Promoters get market research daily. Those that listen and compromise what they they may be feeling is the right way to go generally are rewarded with increased profitability. Those that think that the fans don’t know what the fans really want, generally continue to downtrend. It’s simple marketing 101.

Listen to the paying customers and allow them to guide you to what some refer to the Promised Land or, better said, the land of profitability.”

He added that any wrestling company looking to turn things around needs to fully commit to a small group of talent, push them as main event stars for several months getting off course.

Other topics discussed include The Rock’s partnership with Ford Motors and his one-man shows in Dallas over WrestleMania 32 weekend.

Roman Reigns vs. Bray Wyatt Confirmed For WWE Hell In A Cell

24

As previously reported during this week’s edition of SmackDown Roman Reigns challenged Bray Wyatt to a Hell in a Cell match at the Hell in a Cell PPV on the 25th of October. WWE has since confirmed the match will be taking place inside the HIAC structure. From WWE.com:

“Their brawls have smashed through ringside barricades and shattered announce tables, but on Sunday, Oct. 25, Roman Reigns and Bray Wyatt will fight to a finish inside Hell in a Cell, live on WWE Network. The match will be both Superstars’ first voyage into the career-changing structure.

With the Cell door locked, no other Superstars will be able to enter the fray, raising the stakes for this deeply personal rivalry. In the past months, the Reigns-Wyatt beef has at times teetered on full-blown turf-war status, entangling Dean Ambrose, Luke Harper, Braun Strowman and even Chris Jericho. At WWE Hell in a Cell, however, Reigns and Wyatt will be left entirely to their own devices….

Who will emerge from the inhospitable Hell in a Cell as the clear victor? Watch the brutal conflict when it airs live from Los Angeles’ STAPLES Center Sunday, Oct. 25, only on the award-winning WWE Network.”

Paul Heyman Reacts To Fans Who Are Not Satisfied With Lesnar vs. Big Show

10

Paul Heyman continues to do the media rounds promoting Saturday night’s WWE live event from Madison Square Garden.  Here are some highlights of his interview with Marcus Vanderberg of Yahoo Sports:

Fans Not Being Satisfied With Big Show As Brock Lesnar’s Opponent:

“I think you’re always going to get a backlash for Brock Lesnar’s opponent because we have built Brock up to such a degree that unless we’re giving them Brock Lesnar for the championship against the current champion and probably every other living ex-champion as well in a handicap match, someone is going to find a problem with the booking of the match. If you just gave them Brock Lesnar vs. Seth Rollins for the championship in the Garden, people would then say they should have saved that for a pay-per-view. If you gave them Brock Lesnar vs. John Cena in the Garden, they would question why Brock is fighting for the U.S. title and not the World title. People are always going to find fault in any match that involves Brock Lesnar because any matchup that you present for Brock Lesnar, people are going to say how is that a challenge for The Beast?”

Who He Wants To See Brock Lesnar Get In The Ring With:

“It depends on which show we are talking about. In Madison Square Garden, I personally would love to do something that has mainstream cache to it. I would love to do Brock Lesnar vs. Mike Tyson in Madison Square Garden. Personally, I would find that interesting. I wouldn’t want to do that match at WrestleMania, but I would certainly want to do that at Madison Square Garden. At WrestleMania, I would like Brock Lesnar to be in the championship match — the last match of the night — at any WrestleMania whether he’s the champion or the challenger. At Hell in a Cell, we have the right opponent. The master of the Hell in a Cell … The Undertaker. It’s a rivalry that’s gone on the last 13 years since Brock was a rookie. We finally present the final showdown between Brock and The Undertaker at Hell in a Cell. So, my dream scenarios for Brock Lesnar depend on the show at hand.”

Video: Roman Reigns Talks About Fans Rejecting His Royal Rumble Win

13

Roman Reigns appeared on the Hot 97 Morning Show this week to promote Saturday night’s WWE live event from Madison Square Garden and why breast cancer awareness is so important. He spoke about a number of topics, including the breakup with The Shield, his family lineage and more.

Host Peter Rosenberg of the Cheap Heat Podcast asked Reigns what it was like back in January when he won the Royal Rumble in Philadelphia, but was overwhelmingly rejected by the live crowd and fans at home. Rosenberg tried to cut Reigns some slack saying that the reaction was ‘mixed’ but Reigns admitted:

“I didn’t hear any cheers. It was rough, you know. It’s crazy because it was one of the most special nights of my life, but it didn’t go exactly like I’d hoped or planned. So it was emotional. It was a roller coaster. To have such a high and then be smashed by such a reaction .. When it comes down to it, with this life, this schedule, you take on a lot of stuff. Sometimes you can’t sell anything, you’ve just gotta let things ricochet off of you. When you’re out there in that ring, there’s a lot of emotion and passion going on. I love what I do. I love this form of art. So to get that negative response, it can hurt your feelings.

Reigns’ cousin The Rock was there to celebrate his big Rumble win and was visibly surprised by the negative reaction Reigns got after winning. Rosenberg wanted to know if The Rock was fully aware he was about to walk in to:

“I think he had a good idea. With social media, with so many different outlets and platforms that we have now, you can kind of get a taste of what’s happening, the way people are swinging and where you’re falling. Leading up, for weeks, I could see it. I could see it developing and the movement getting stronger. I knew I wasn’t going to be a popular guy that night. I didn’t realize it was going to be so strong.”

Host Ebro, who is a casual fan, suggested that fans might have been vetting Reigns and voicing that he might not be ready for the opportunity he was being given. Ebro said the fans are trying to bruise him up and make sure he can handle being compared to the legends of the industry. He also predicted fans won’t be accepting of Reigns for another 18 months. Reigns said fans are already starting to come around. Rosenberg agreed that fans sensed that WWE was gearing up to get behind Reigns and lashed out, despite the fact that they loved him when he was in The Shield.

Overall, it’s a great interview and definitely worth checking out.

Paul Heyman Explains Why WWE Viewership Is Declining

53

The Advocate Paul Heyman spoke with Scott Fishman of Channel Guide Mag this week to promote Saturday night’s WWE Network special from Madison Square Garden in New York City. They spoke about a number of topics, including Heyman’s long history with MSG, Brock Lesnar’s storied rivalry with the Big Show as well as WrestleMania 32.

Perhaps the most interesting subject was that of WWE’s recent downturn in viewership. Heyman argues that a catalyst of WWE’s predicament has been their failure to attract a generation of new fans. Heyman said,

“I think if there is erosion in the ratings then we are in a cycle within the industry where fans are going and looking for or finding other interests,” Heyman said. “This is not dissimilar to any other forms of entertainment. The key has always been to replace those who leave, to bring in more fans at any time you are losing fans. At this particular point in time there is a search to find the new fan. I am not one who looks at the ratings every Tuesday and says, ‘Well, we haven’t replaced everybody that is left. The ratings didn’t double.’ I’m not expecting that type of increase tomorrow or the next week or the week after that.

Of course, Paul Heyman does not seem like the type of guy to talk about a problem without offering a viable resolution. Heyman pitches a back to basics approach, developing the stars of tomorrow who can carry the company for years to come.

“Any business with longevity, and this is the one company in the business that has survived, deals with this. They survive because when there was an erosion of the audience and they had to replenish the audience, there isn’t a panic. Panic is never the answer. Panic never brings up the ratings. A long-term solution is with a number of brand new stars, all in compelling situations with riveting storylines and new matchups. That is what will bring an upswing to the ratings ever so slowly to where the average rating goes up a little bit each month. Then a couple of years from now the erosion have taken place of the people that have left being fans and a new generation or group or crop of fans has come in. It’s natural evolution of any form of entertainment.”

Scott Hall Talks About The State Of The Business, Wanting His Own WWE Network Show

6

WWE Hall of Famer Scott Hall recently appeared on Another Wrestling Podcast to discuss the state of the wrestling industry, wanting his own show on the WWE Network and more. Here are some highlight of what the Bad Guy said about:

If Wrestling Could Be As Popular as the Late 1990’s:

“The economy was different then, it was stronger. I think there were less entertainment options. There’s so many things now that people can view. There’s not just cable TV, there’s online. I think that cuts into it,” Hall said.

“Overall I think wrestling companies will get bigger. The WWE machine is a lot stronger than it was when I was there. When you go to TV, it’s unbelievable the production that’s going on. Then they have their Network cameras there filming guys filming guys.”

Wanting His Own Show On The WWE Network:

“They’re stocking that Network full of shows,” Hall said. “I want to do a travel show. I’m working on a cooking show, I’m going to do some of it at Dallas Page’s performance center. I’m going to do a cooking show called Dude Food, where I show young guys how to eat good and clean, cheap.”

Kelly Kelly Proud Of Charlotte, Reveals Which Divas She’s Want To Wrestle

Charlotte Becoming Divas Champion:

“I think Charlotte’s great. I think she’s a wonderful gymnast and had that same athletic background I had with gymnastics, and following in her father’s footsteps is great. I’m so happy and proud of her. I think she really deserves it and she’s been working so hard. I think it’s awesome.”

Which Current Diva She Wants To Wrestle:

“It’s funny, because I feel like all the girls who are there now I’ve worked with. The [Bella] Twins are still there, Natalya’s still there, Alicia Fox is still there, Rosa Mendes is still there, all these girls – there’s not many new ones. Maybe Paige. When I left she came in so I think she’d be someone I’d like to work with for sure.”

Total Divas Audience Up For Season Finale, Cody Rhodes On His Return As Stardust

9

– The Total Divas season finale which aired on E! earlier this week brought in 1.158 million viewers according to a report from ShowBuzzDaily.com.

This number is a large increase from the previous week’s episode which brought in an average viewership of 795,000 and is the biggest audience since August 11th which brought in 1.176 million viewers.

– Cody Rhodes was asked during an interview with the Pittsburgh Tribune on why following the death of his father Dusty Rhodes he didn’t return as himself.

“It would have been tacky, and it wouldn’t have been genuine. Many years ago, I used to watch Raw with my dad, and we watched Nitro, and we watched the PPVs. Many years ago, there was a wrestler who passed away, and his name was used pretty regularly after that on programming.

People were using it to try and draw the adulation of fans. Everyone was saying, ‘Oh, well such and such who passed away would have loved this.’ And (Dusty) told me, and this is something very few people know, `When I go, don’t ever let anybody say that about me. I left my body of work on the table already and it doesn’t need to be expanded.’ And I never forgot that. So there was never any question on who was coming back.”
