Elijah Burke Talks Announcing, Spirit Squad Rumor, & More

5

Elijah Burke/The Pope was interviewed on the newest edition of The Two Man Power Trip of Wrestling and covered a number of topics. Some of the key quotes:

Transitioning to announcing:

I think a lot of people know that when you are a wrestler and you’ve been doing it for twelve years as an active performer and then all of a sudden things kind of take a shift and the stars align and someone recognizes that your gift can be used in a different aspect. It’s been interesting and it’s been fun. It’s a different type of getting over with the audience. My job right now is to get over a lot of the guys that I’ve wrestled against and I’ve wrestled beside and the transition has been believe it or not, quite easy. It hasn’t been as hard of a transition as many people probably think it would be because the gift of gab is something that I always had.

The importance of the announcers t a show and his ability as a talker:

The night before WrestleMania 23 at Ford Field “Pope” was at an ESPN boxing presentation and was calling the fight alongside Thomas “Hitman” Hearns and once that was over with he looked at me and said how long have you been doing this? When it comes from an analytic stand point it’s not hard at all. What’s hard is the time provided to do so. That is sometimes rough because there is so much that is going on and obviously IMPACT is a fast paced show and often times my partner Josh Mathews who is a jack of all trades and doesn’t get a lot of credit for it but he has so much that he has to cover and so much that he has to get done and you may notice this but throughout the contest when Josh is talking this or that, the Pope has made it my job to bring the action and the focal point back to the two or four people that are in the middle of that ring because that is what wrestling fans want and what wrestling fans are watching so therefore I try to do the boys and the girls credit while they are in that six sided ring.

Why he prefers to call matches without knowing the finishes, which most old-school announcers preferred:

That’s the way “Pope” prefers it. I prefer not to know anything. Therefore, if I am seeing it and looking at it from a fan’s perspective then I can respond and react and say what you are thinking as a casual or regular viewer of the product. That’s what I love to do as a commentator for IMPACT Wrestling, I love to give the focal analysis that the viewer at home is watching as well. I want to translate as my Daddy would say “let me break this down in English so that a child could understand it”. For me it’s always easier and comes across natural, if you know that often times you can tell if something is forced or when a reaction is not a legit or real reaction. Everything that you get from “Pope” is not planned and is real and I’m watching it as if I’m sitting at home on my couch with a good friend of mine and we are back in 1996 watching WCW Nitro and Monday Night RAW.

Is he retired? Where exactly does his in-ring career stand?

I think in due time that “Pope” will have that opportunity. It’s not something right now and don’t think for a second that I don’t miss it, because I do. At the same time I’ve recognized that my job and my role are and I know what it is and that is to be an asset from a commentator standpoint. So I am not focused on anything except bettering my game at the table. I am not worried about anything else but becoming a better and as my partner would say the most “entertaining color commentator” in the business today and that’s what “Pope” wants to be and that’s what I’m setting out to accomplish. Now there will be times in the future and you can take “Pope’s” word for this. There will be times in the future when “Pope” will do a casual appearance inside the ring, I am not retired. Let’s get it out there right now “Pope” is not retired by a long shot I’ve got years left under my belt. I just recognize my role right now and have no problems committing to it and fulfilling it to the best of my abilities.

His thoughts on Samoa Joe, both with regards to their TNA feud and Joe going to NXT:

“Pope’s” feud with Samoa Joe did not receive nor get the type of attention that it should have and I am talking about from a in/out standpoint not from a viewer standpoint. I was openly and to a certain extent let my displeasure be known about it because you have to remember during that time “Pope” had just come off of a feud with Abyss and Immortal and Sting had just left and Kevin Nash walked out so “Pope” was the last guy standing fighting this big fight and I get put in a casket and then all of a sudden “Pope” gets put in a feud with Samoa Joe for no reason at all. However, myself and Samoa Joe made the best of it and had fun with it and that took us to our Lockdown match-up in St. Louis. I had fun with Samoa Joe, it was always great working Samoa Joe and he brought out the best in “Pope” and we definitely did a lot of innovative things. I’ve got to go on record and say how happy I am for Samoa Joe and for him to experience what he is experiencing right now and I wish him nothing but the best of love for him and his family’s sake.

Was he supposed to be in the Spirit Squad?

It’s funny that after all these years, over a decade and only this year I believe I’m answering questions about the Spirit Squad. It’s very true. They wanted me to go up and be in my opinion the “afro-haired chosen black guy” during that time in the group and trust me it was a great opportunity. We sat there and we talked to Vince McMahon himself and Vince said “I want you guys to understand that this is my idea and we are going to make a lot of money”. He said if you are uncomfortable we will send you back down to OVW and we will wait until we get something else for you. I went to Vince and Johnny Ace and said I appreciated the opportunity but with all due respect I don’t feel like I should do anything that I could not live up to in your standards and I don’t want to be a failure and I don’t believe this spot is for me. I was a little worried that I was about to tell the boss that I didn’t want to do it. Either he was going to respect me for it or he was going to punish me for it.

A lot of guys took it to heart that I said no which I never understood because they weren’t in my position or in my shoes and the guys that were going out there were very, very talented and thus when I said no they added Mike Mondo and they added Johnny Jeter and instead of it being four like it was originally going to be it turned out to be five. There was no way that this “big black guy” and 225-230 pounds at the time was going to be running down a ramp, jumping on a trampoline and flipping over the top rope. It was just not going to happen without me screwing up and looking like a fool. I didn’t want to take that chance, I didn’t want to risk that chance and I am happy that I did and kudos to Dolph Ziggler. Just look at him. In my eyes the guy is just a premier performer.

Make sure to listen to th full interview, where he discusses being “New Breed” in the ECW revival, his time in OVW, WrestleMania 23, and more.

Sheamus Says He Could “Absolutely” Beat UFC Star Conor McGregor

16

Former WWE champ Sheamus has made his feelings clear about UFC megastar Conor McGregor in the past and is now back at it. McGregor told him in the past on Twitter that “you will wake up with no teeth and your nose on my mantle,” if the two Irishmen ever fought each other.

Sheamus, who was sitting down with The Irish Mirror to promote WWE’s upcoming European Tour next month, commented on McGregor again.

When asked if he would fight McGregor, Sheamus pointed out that they’re in different weight classes, but that he could still “take” the UFC star.

He was having a go at WWE in these interviews he was doing. The first couple of times I let it go but then I decided to have a bit of craic and banter with him. If someone’s going to have a crack, that’s fine. Would I take Conor McGregor? No, he’s a lot shorter than me. I don’t think we’d be allowed fight—a heavyweight and a lightweight. Would I take him [if I had to]? Absolutely. Course I would. No one could take me. No one’s better than me. I could walk over anyone.

Jim Ross: Cornette Should Be In Hall of Fame, WWE’s Use Of The Dudleys

4

WWE Hall of Fame announcer Jim Ross fielded a few new questions in the Q&A section over at JRsBarBQ.com. He discusses how WWE is using the Dudleys, whether Jim Cornette should be in the Hall of Fame or not, and more. Here are some highlights:

On how WWE is using The Dudley Boyz:

I happen to like how the Dudley’s are being utilized. Building up the tag team scene in WWE is totally up to mgmt. They can do whatever they choose.

Why Shelton Benjamin never received a shot at the WWE Title:

I’d guess it was because we were never able to tap into Sheldon’s charisma because he was an amazing athlete.

If Jim Cornette should be in the WWE Hall of Fame:

Jim Cornette is a legit HOFer in any Hall of Fame. I have no idea who would induct JC. That would be his call.

Recap Of Brock Lesnar On “Stone Cold Podcast” On WWE Network

10

The “Stone Cold Podcast” returned on the WWE Network on Monday night following WWE RAW, as “Stone Cold” Steve Austin interviewed “The Beast Incarnate” Brock Lesnar. Below, courtesy of F4WOnline.com is a recap of the show.

The Steve Austin Podcast with Brock Lesnar was interesting. It was an interview that made Lesnar come across as a blue collar guy who, at the same time, is also a smart businessperson while also being somewhat introverted. He said in the interview that he clocks in, clocks out and doesn’t go out of his way to make friends or politic. When going out to cook his favorite food, steak (the first fifteen minutes of the interview was off topic), he likes to see his land, and not any of his neighbors. It’s easy to see why Lesnar doesn’t do these kinds of interviews, so when he does it’s very interesting to see him in this light.

He talked about his early days, watching Little House on the Prairie on TV (no, really) and working on his parent’s farm in South Dakota. They talked about his wrestling days at University of Minnesota and assorted junior colleges. Lesnar talked about how Brad Rheingans broke him into the business once WWE were interested and how Curt Hennig and Big Boss Man taught him the business while on the road. They talk about his first run in the WWE, working with The Rock. In an interesting line, Lesnar said that it was The Rock that taught him to be selfish, and that it was a give and take business. He also mentioned that he was pressured into taking that shooting star press at WrestleMania XIX. Just because he could do something athletic, doesn’t mean he actually wanted to do it.

They talk briefly about the terrible WrestleMania XX match between him and Goldberg. Lesnar said they both wanted out and “didn’t give a shit”. Lesnar flat out said he used the NFL as a scapegoat to leave WWE. After skirting a question concerning the 2005 lawsuit between him and WWE (it’s all water under the bridge) they go into his UFC run for a bit. Lesnar said he met with Dana after entering the Octagon as a spectator after a Gonzaga/Couture match and said he wanted in. That seems like a bit of a stretch. He said he might be still fighting today in the Octagon if it wasn’t for the diverticulitis. He talked about getting sick in Canada and travelling back to the states to see a doctor.

They capped it off by talking about current WWE topics. Austin mentions breaking the streak and Lesnar said that some people didn’t like that, but did anyone else have the credentials to beat Undertaker? He’s not good at promos, but that’s what Heyman is there for – he’s gotta feed the Jew (his words, not mine). Austin asks about Hell in a Cell and Lesnar goes into kind of worked shoot mode, saying he has gripes with the Undertaker and didn’t like how their last match turned out, so he promises carnage at Hell in the Cell.

There were a few other topics discussing, including comparing Dana and Vince (which Lesnar really doesn’t do because Austin went to the next question rather quickly), a rant on millennials, getting sick in Canada and nearly requiring surgery, Austin’s walkout in 2002 and how that was maybe a two way street deal, and his fights with Heath Herring and Randy Couture. Again, a pretty interesting interview that’s worth your time. If you don’t like off topic banter, though, I recommend skipping the first 15 minutes or so.

Erick Rowan Returns On RAW, Tommaso Ciampa Denies WWE Rumors, Foley/Rose

15

– Erick Rowan made his WWE television return at Monday’s WWE Hell In A Cell “go-home” edition of RAW. Rowan returned early into the show during a segment where Roman Reigns brawled with the Wyatt Family. He returned later in the show for the main event, which saw him team with Bray Wyatt and Braun Strowman to take on the team of Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins.

– There was an exchange between WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley and WWE Superstar Adam Rose on Twitter on Monday where each guy put over the other guy. The exchange got started after Rose was asked by a fan who his biggest inspiration was. Rose was quick to respond, “Mick Foley. In and out of the ring.” Foley responded to Rose’s tweet by saying, “Thank you. It doesn’t get much better than having the respect and admiration of your colleagues.”

– Although it has been rumored that highly-regarded independent wrestler Tommaso Ciampa has signed with WWE, Ciampa is claiming otherwise. As we reported via F4WOnline.com earlier today, as of Sunday, Ciampa had yet to officially sign the dotted line on an actual WWE contract. Ciampa wrote the following on social media regarding the rumors.

13

– Adam Rose responded to a fan on Twitter today who wrote that NXT Superstar Tyler Breeze will become a “jobber” when he moves to WWE’s main roster, and that he will get “the Adam Rose treatment.” Rose replied to the fan, “Not at all, Tyler is gonna be a mega star! Mark my words.” As noted, Breeze is rumored to be joining the main roster imminently.

– WWE shot an angle during the RAW pre-show that saw co-hosts Corey Graves and David Otunga campaign for the job of “Director of Operations.” Prior to RAW, WWE announced that Corporate Kane was suspended this week and that if he loses to Seth Rollins at WWE Hell In A Cell this Sunday, he will be relieved of his job in The Authority permanently. The announcements led to Graves and Otunga campaigning for the spot throughout the pre-show, with both guys referencing it multiple times and airing campaign-style video packages. The fun continued on social media, as you can see via the following tweets.

WWE Runs Injury Angle To Explain Randy Orton’s Hiatus

15

As expected, WWE shot an injury angle on Monday’s WWE Hell In A Cell “go-home” edition of RAW in Dallas, Texas to explain the current hiatus of “The Viper” Randy Orton.

Orton, who just recently returned after being off of television for a while, is back on hiatus and is scheduled to get married in Las Vegas, Nevada on November 14th. It will be Orton’s second marriage.

During RAW, the cameras shot to the announce table where Michael Cole made what was called a “Breaking News Announcement.” Cole announced that Orton did not appear at the WWE tour of Mexico over the weekend as scheduled, and that his status for Sunday’s WWE Hell In A Cell pay-per-view, where he is scheduled to team with Dean Ambrose to take on The Wyatt Family, is in question.

JBL chimed in and stated that his “sources” have informed him that The Wyatt Family got to Orton and attacked him ahead of Sunday’s pay-per-view.

“Stone Cold” Steve Austin Kicks Off RAW

Michael Cole welcomed viewers to Raw. He was joined on commentary by JBL and Byron Saxton…

The glass broke and there was a great pop as Steve Austin’s music played and he made his entrance. Austin did his usual four corner routine once he was in the ring minus flipping the double middle finger salute. Cole noted that it was the first time in nearly four years that Austin had been in the ring on Raw.

Austin spoke about starting his career at the Sportatorium, and opening the building with The Rock. He played to the crowd with some “hell yeah” chant alongs, then plugged his interview with Brock Lesnar for WWE Network. Austin played the “What?” game with the crowd and then said he was very honored to introduce The Undertaker.

The Undertaker & Brock Lesnar Showdown

Undertaker made his entrance as Austin made his exit. Once the elaborate entrance was over, Taker addressed Brock Lesnar. He said they have one last battle to fight. Taker said the gates of hell will look like the gates of heaven compared to where he’s taking Lesnar on Sunday.

Brock Lesnar’s music played and then he and Paul Heyman walked onto the stage. Heyman delivered his introduction and spoke about how he and Lesnar were talking about how fitting it is that both men will enter HIAC consumed with the thought of revenge. Heyman said Lesnar wants to avenge the disputed, tainted, and illegitimate victory that Taker scored over him at SummerSlam.

Heyman said Taker lusts after the notion of avenging the fact that Lesnar conquered his undefeated streak at WrestleMania. The crowd booed.

Taker said that’s were the problem is. Taker removed his hat and trench coat. “When you take everything from a man, then that man ends up fighting with nothing to lose,” Taker said. Undertaker motioned for Lesnar to come to the ring. Heyman rolled his eyes and blew it off, but Lesnar walked to the ring as Heyman tried to talk him down.

Lesnar stopped at ringside, then leapt onto the apron. Heyman continued to protest by saying this isn’t on Lesnar’s time. “No, no, no, this is not your time,” Heyman said. Lesnar smiled and then dropped off the ring apron. Heyman looked relieved, then joined Lesnar in smiling at Taker as they headed up the ramp. Taker did the throat slashing gesture. Cole said Lesnar may be able to walk away tonight, but no one can do that on Sunday because of HIAC.

The broadcast team hyped John Cena and The Dudley Boyz vs. New Day for after the break.

John Cena and The Dudley Boyz vs. Kofi Kingston, Big E, and Xavier Woods

During the introductions, Cole hyped Cena’s appearance on ESPN “SportsCenter.” Woods said New Day are unicorns in that they brought magic back to WWE. They also mocked the injuries suffered by Dallas Cowboys star players (and, more importantly, my fantasy football team players) Tony Romo and Dez Bryant. New Day regathered at ringside early in the match as they cut to break. [C]

[Q3] Late in the match, Kofi ran Bubba Ray Dudley into the ring post. John Cena performed a cross body block off the top rope and onto Big E on the floor. Meanwhile, Woods rolled up D-Von Dudley and held his tights to get the pin.

Winners: The New Day

After The Match:

After the match, the babyfaces roughed up New Day. John Cena gave Woods an Attitude Adjustment. Bubba had the crowd tell D-Von to get the tables. Cena and D-Von hoisted up Woods and then Bubba powerbombed him from the second rope through the table. Big E and Kingston watched on in horror while lying on the entrance ramp…

Randy Orton Update

Cole announced that Randy Orton was supposed to be on the tour of Mexico and never made the dates. Cole said Orton was not at Raw tonight either. JBL said his sources told him that Orton “is injured again.” A shot aired of Dean Ambrose talking with agents Dean Ambrose, David Finlay, and a referee backstage. Saxton said Renee Young will attempt to interview Ambrose after the break.

The Authority Suspends Corporate Kane, Six-Man Tag Match Set For RAW

11

– WWE announced that “Corporate Kane” has been suspended by The Authority. WWE posted the following just before this week’s edition of RAW:

The Authority suspended Corporate Kane for tonight’s Raw earlier today after a series of closed-door meetings, WWE.com has learned. Last week on Raw, the Director of Operations scheduled a Lumberjack Match between Demon Kane and WWE World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins, defying The Authority’s instructions. It is not yet clear, however, whether Corporate Kane’s suspension is directly related to his actions last week.

– Also announced just before RAW goes live tonight is a six-man tag-team match thatg will feature John Cena & The Dudley Boyz vs. The New Day.

Mick Foley Gives Glowing Review To New Lance Hoyt Documentary

3

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DR4Jmy7UuEE

WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley recently gave a glowing review to a new documentary on YouTube about wrestler Lance Hoyt. The prject is titled “Bump” and you can watch it above.

Here’s what Foley had to say of the 8-minute and 26-second film on his Facebook page:

AN INTERESTING LOOK

If you have an extra eight minutes in your day, try taking a look at this short documentary about pro-wrestler Lance Hoyt. I watched it last night and was immediately struck by two things: Hoyt’s passion for wrestling – and the film-makers passion for this project. It’s possible that many of you only remember Lance Hoyt as a guy with a bad gimmick in TNA. It’s funny…and sad how long a bad gimmick can stay with you in the minds of fans. I started hearing great things about Hoyt as a wrestler a few years ago – but in my mind, he was still the guy with the bad gimmick. I look at him differently now, after seeing this documentary. You will too. Give it a try.

The Facebook page for the video describes the film as “a cinematic portrait of pro-wrestler Lance Hoyt.”
