Chris Jericho Talks Potential TV Return, Weirdest Thing A Fan Asked Him To Sign

12

Chris Jericho spoke with TampaBay.com to promote WWE’s weekend live event from Tampa, FL. Here are some highlights of what he said about:

The Weirdest Thing A Fan Has Asked Him To Sign:

“It’s always interesting when people come to signings, and there will be someone at the front of the line and they’ll ask me to sign their arm. Then I swear, 20 to 30 minutes later, that same guy is back in line with my signature tattooed on them, asking me to take a picture with them and the new tattoo. Those things … it’s an honor. That’s a true fan. They’ll get tattoos of Fozzy lyrics, the Fozzy F or our “anarchist” logo. That stuff puts a lot of pressure on you, because if you ever make a wrong decision, you know you’ll have let that person down.”

What He Likes About Working WWE Live Events:

It’s improv. It’s a little more fan interactive. With the TV shows, everything is meticulously timed. There is five minutes for this and 12 minutes for that. At the live show, you work until you’re done. You’re allowed to finish the match. The differences in TV and the live events are massive in some ways and small in others. True wrestling fans know there are pros and cons to both. There is more wrestling and less talking sometimes at the live events.

If He Plans To Return To TV Any Time Soon:

“I really don’t think so. The live events are always so stress-free. You can do whatever you want. They don’t have specific storylines you are beholden to. There’s a lot of TV that has to be perfectly timed to be watched by 5 million people. In the live event, it’s just for the people in the crowd. We stress the fun.”

Lucha Underground Pros & Cons (Episode 14): El Patron Blows The Roof Off The Temple

20

Lucha Underground: Episode 14
Airdate: February 11, 2015

Report by Rudy Cabrera

Last week ended with a cliffhanger after we witnessed the much anticipated debut of AAA World Heavyweight Champion Alberto El Patron, formerly known as Alberto Del Rio in WWE, as most of us know.  He is the only man with the distinction of holding every major wrestling championship in North America. Very impressive. The title he bears, El Patron, suggests something about his character since in Mexico it is a title reserved for bosses of real estate, industry, or criminal enterprise. It is a title not just anyone can have and is made use of by powerful people only. Alberto brings class, experience and star power to the promotion the way very few wrestlers can. He’s an important acquisition that is sure to keep Luchas ever increasing momentum going. From this point forward we can expect the show to revolve around him.

We kick things off straight to business with Alberto in Dario Cuetos office. Cueto thanks him for coming. He tells Alberto he likes his suits, his cars and the fact he’s come to visit the Temple. Alberto tells him he likes his key. He asks what it unlocks but Cueto ignores the question. Eventually they agree El Patron will get an open microphone tonight because there are things he wants to get off his chest. He says the next time he asks Cueto for anything, it will be for blood. Great opening segment that makes one anticipate what he’ll say later and encourages the viewer to stay tuned.

Argenis vs Fenix

We are welcomed by Matt Striker and Vampiro to an electric Boyle Heights crowd ready for action. They hype Albertos announcement tonight on an open microphone. Mariachi El Bronx is with us again tonight. Melissa Santos introduces Argenis already in the ring. Argenis is the brother of Mysteziz, formerly known as Mistico and the original Sin Cara in WWE. His opponent Fenix is considered one of the best high flyers in the world and this match really showed why as it was an all out display of athleticism and fast paced high flying action. A

couple of moves were botched but nothing that could be perceived by the untrained eye. These guys were springboarding off every rope and diving to the outside continuously, with some spots looking rather risky if you ask me. It was a spectacular match leading the crowd to chant “this is awesome” several times. Catrina came down to the ring during the match, following up on her previous meeting with Fenix when she teased him with a devilish kiss. Argenis capitalized on the distraction and attempted to secure the win, but was bested by Fenix who walked away victorious after a sick looking modified sit down tombstone piledriver. These guys are full of innovative maneuvers. The move was executed perfectly and safely as Fenix held his neck in place with his hand as he drove him to the mat. Catrina then entered the ring and licked Argenis all the while staring down Fenix.

They teased Mil Muertes sent her out to mess with Fenix since Fenix had beaten him a couple of weeks ago. Catrina is one hot, seductive young woman. Reminds you of the kind you can’t trust. I enjoyed the commentary on this match as the announcers were adamant about giving us a history lesson. Vampiro mentioned how Konnan, among others, is one of the founders of AAA and Matt Striker took what I perceived as a shot at WWE and said “we won’t kill you with social media” and then promoted the Lucha Undergrounds social media accounts. These two make a good team.

We see clips of El Patron arriving in an Aston Martin and getting off the car in slow motion looking like a boss. Alberto really lives up to his name and always looks like a million bucks. Can’t wait for his announcement.

Mil Muertes is backstage and Catrina tells him holding the power of a thousand lives is too much for him to handle. He then shuts her up by lifting her from the throat and goes on to say in a monstrous voice that he needs nothing. The segment was a little tacky as the scene cuts to show her feet leave the ground when he lifts her and then return to the ground as he puts her back. It looked unrealistic and inconsistent with the camera work and in my opinion it was unnecessary. As he’s leaving he finds Chavo walking backstage and tosses him from wall to wall by his throat. He then tells him next week he has a debt to pay. Mil Muertes sure looks strong despite any losses that may appear on his record.

Big Ryck goes to a confessional and asks to be forgiven, for he is about to sin against three men who have betrayed him. He swore revenge on the Crenshaw Crew, calling each of them a Judas, and promising to go Old Testament on them. Ryck lights a cigar and quotes Deuteronomy 32 saying vengeance is his. This was shot beautifully and got Ryck over as a big-time face with more to him than meets the eye. I can’t believe I’m excited about Ezekiel Jackson! The man looked dangerous and determined. WWE really needs to take notes.

Son of Havoc vs Johnny Mundo

Last week Johnny Mundo was dismantled by the combined forces of King Cuerno and Cage. This week he’s set to go head-to-head with the yet-to-be-victorious Son of Havok. Son of Havoc dedicated tonight’s victory to the “baddest b**** in the building,” Ivelisse. Commentary sold that Mundo was still hurt due to the attack last week from King Cuerno. They talked about how Mundo had been with trainers all day and his knee was not a hundred percent. Unfortunately Mundo was running around as if nothing was wrong from the get go which was somewhat disappointing from a storytelling and commentary point of view.

Ivelisse got involved several times to allow Havoc to gain an advantage, leading to Mundo finally selling the knee. Havoc is a really good performer, sells very well and made all of Mundo’s offense look really strong. This was a hard fought battle booked way more evenly than I thought it would be. This was a match with a great collection of spots between two former gymnasts. The athletic skills in gymnastics are a great fit for wrestling. Gymnasts are very strong pound for pound, they possess tremendous body control and bring great agility to the ring. There was a spot in the match where Havoc displays tremendous body core strength by dispensing himself horizontally in the air holding on to nothing but the ring post before he dropped the elbow. It was unbelievable and you truly have to see it to believe it.

Havoc had Mundo beat, but took too long to come off the top with the shooting star press. Mundo got the knees up, hit the End of the World, and escaped with the win.  It was a great match full of athleticism and in ring prowess. The story here is that Ivelisse is getting frustrated with Havocs constant losing. King Cuerno then appeared and beat down Mundo to follow up on last weeks attack and continue setting up their feud. I truly believe they are under utilizing Son of Havoc. Havoc is an amazing talent that should be wrestling at the top of the card. Striker was intense during the match and seemed to have taken another shot at WWE when he said “our stars are made in the ring not out of it”.

Jeff Jarrett Talks Plans For GFW, CM Punk’s History In TNA, His Controversial WWE Exit

12

GFW founder Jeff Jarrett recently spoke with the v2 Wrestling Podcast about a number of topics, including plans for his new promotion and more.

Below are highlights from the interview:

On whether GFW will be a standalone promotion: “The short answer is yes. I have been working with the team on what wrestling fans are calling a standalone promotion. Multiple conversations with talent, distributors, sponsorships, venues, legal, finance, everything that goes with launching the brand. I don’t want to get too overinflated and say major announcements, but I’ll call them very exciting announcements around WrestleMania and then the weeks to come after that. So in the next 4-6 weeks, the first announcement will be coming.”

On his relationship with CM Punk in TNA: “He did work with us for a little while, yes. It was in the Asylum days when I was wearing 5, 6, 7 hats every Wednesday night. We had a very business-like, cordial relationship. To say that I missed the boat would be an understatement of the year, but things like that happen. My father started two guys from California that drove cross country and the first time I laid eyes on them was Thanksgiving 1985. Very young and very green, they were called the Blade Runners and within 18 months after they left my father’s promotion they became Sting in WCW and the Ultimate Warrior in the WWF. So promoters miss the boat and there is a long track record of that, but Punk seized his opportunity when he got to WWE. Quite frankly, he goozled that entire promotion and left on his own terms. To this day he’s still one of the hottest box office attractions in professional wrestling, and he’s not even doing it any more.”

On whether there will be a place for Vince Russo in GFW: “We enjoyed our years together but no, not at this time.”

On his controversial departure from the WWF in 1999: “At the end of the day, I showed up to work that night in Cleveland, and (Vince McMahon) had two options, I had two options, and we both took Option A. We agreed on a price, and the rest is history. I have spoken with Vince McMahon several times since that day”.

On whether he will remain an active wrestler: “No, my full-time days in the ring are over. Not to say I’m not going to put on the tights again, and quite frankly, in the last two weeks I don’t know what it is but I’ve gotten several offers from promoters in Canada, the Carolinas and California, so like I did last year, I’ll probably have a few shows here and there. But my main focus is Global Force Wrestling and launching that brand as a standalone promotion.”

On his role in GFW: “I like to refer to (my role) as somewhat of a matchmaker. In the old days they called it a booker, but a booker is really a matchmaker and let the fans decide. The talent, it’s not like you want to slap on and say this week you’re the Gobbledy Gooker and next week you’re Skinner. It’s who is Talent A and why are they Talent A, what’s to like or not like about Talent A. You put them against Talent B, who they are and why they are, and they go out there and get it done in the ring. I think that’s a recipe for success in professional wrestling.”

On GFW’s style compared to other promotions: “It’ll have its own style, but I don’t believe in recreating the wheel. I think Wrestle Kingdom 9 proved it, and Jim Ross said it in some of the videos that we produced on him, wrestling fans don’t over-think it. Give the fans what they want. Great wrestlers, hard-hitting style, championships, winners, losers and larger than life personalities – that’s what we plan on doing. I’ve always had that philosophy, dating back to my early days in the territories and my father’s and grandmother’s promotion. You have good wrestlers, and whether it’s black hats and white hats or however you want to define it, the people have to know and understand that Wrestler A is fighting Wrestler B and why they’re fighting, what are the results on who wins and who loses, and what’s going to happen next. I don’t think you need to overthink that in any stretch of the imagination. I think there are instances, from NXT to Wrestle Kingdom 9 to Triplemania, the successful wrestling shows going on in the world today are, at its core, basic and simplistic.”

Jim Ross Blog: NXT TakeOver: Rival Thoughts, Kevin Owens, Fast Lane

6

The following are highlights of the latest Jim Ross blog:

On NXT TakeOver: Rival: “Enjoyed the NXT show this week on @WWENetwork from start to finish. The announcing was strong, kept me on point and paying attention. The broadcasters did their best to embellish the talents, both winners and losers, and they all seemed to be on the same page and well prepared.

The in ring talents stayed true to the fundamentals of the genre inasmuch as the villains cheated to gain unfair advantages, were vicious when the opportunity presented itself and showed timely cowardice. The fan favorites did not cheat first and they never gave up on their fans and kept fighting until the end no matter the outcome.

The genre of sports entertainment or pro wrestling or whatever you choose to call it, it essentially a simple business when executed properly and when the fundamentals are stressed and adhered to by all involved including the referees.

I was proud of all involved and love the talent’s aggression and physicality. Being aggressive and physical cures many deficiencies.”

On Kevin Owens: “I think that Kevin Owens is going to be an excellent champion for NXT and he, along with a handful of others are going to be WWE ready much sooner than later. WWE signing some talents with experience from the Indies, etc and then refining their game in Orlando has been a strategic move.”

On WWE Fast Lane: “Some one emailed me at our Q&A’s here that they thought that thee WWE Fast Lane PPV was merely going to be a throwaway show & and I couldn’t disagree more or least it shouldn’t be. I’d shoot some major league angles that would lead into WM31 not unlike any major city who had big wrestling cards every month. Always build to the next show, pose more questions than answers and get down and dirty with your key revenue drivers. The competition to see who is going to be in the WWE Title match at WM31 must be keen because nothing in WWE should be more important to any of the talents than being the champion. Sometimes I don’t get that feeling as unless talents are in the immediate mix for the title they rarely mention it.”

I have a 9 to 5 job, a wife, kids, I can’t afford it. Too expensive. And then you eliminate all that and just go after what you want to go after. That’s just something I’ve wanted to do for a long time.”

I couldn’t have done it without you.’ That’s more gratifying than anything I’ve done as a wrestler. I couldn’t ask for a better job.”

Ric Flair Talks About Roman Reigns Not Catching On With Fans

57

WWE Hal of Famer Ric Flair was recently interviewed by GiveMeSport.com and spoke about fans rejceting Roman Reigns as the next “face of WWE.”

Flair said that he believes Reigns’ relation to The Rock is actually working against him:

“I don’t pay a lot of attention to him talking on the mic but I think he’s okay. Fans look at Roman and they want him to sound like The Rock and that isn’t going to happen,” Flair explained.

Flair added that “The Rock didn’t become The Rock overnight either” and said it took him years to nail down his act.

“Roman has got so much talent that fans are going to have to be patient with him. It doesn’t happen overnight. If people are upset with Roman it’s not over a lack of talent. Fans are always going to have their opinion, but Roman has a fantastic future ahead of him.”

Lucha Underground Executive Producer Denies Vince Russo Is Joining The Company

35

In this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter, it was reported that Vince Russo is in talks with the promotion and will be traveling to Los Angeles for a meeting. Dave Meltzer wrote that Lucha Underground Executive Producer Eric Van Wangenen is pushing to get Russo into the company, despite his questionable track record of booking Mexican wrestlers.

Van Wangenen has since denied the report and responded to several fans on Twitter pleading with him not to work with Vince Russo.

https://twitter.com/ericvanwagenen/status/566101901134295040

Industry insiders who follow Lucha Underground noticed that the most recent Lucha Underground tapings included some segment that reminded them of the Russo style of booking. One match in particular from the February 7th taping was a Mask vs. Mask match that took place with virtually now buildup. Dario Cueto ordered Sexy Star and Super Fly, who are friends on the show, to wrestle each other with both of their masks on the line. There was little to no followup to the angle.

Lucha Underground News: Jim Ross, Bringing In Ex-WWE Stars, Former Divas Backstage & More

18

– El Rey Network executives are said to be very satisfied with Lucha Underground’s viewership. The network was recently added to Dish Network and the Sling TV streaming service, so their exposure continues to grow.

The feeling within Lucha Underground is that they need more ex-WWE stars on the show so they can have familiar names to help build their viewership. That said, there are some who are against bringing in ‘establish names’ unless they can work the lucha style.

– Lucha Underground is considering touring Hispanic markets on the west coat.

– WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross’ agent Barry Bloom is once again in talks with Lucha Underground about JR working for the promotion.

– Former WWE Divas Torrie Wilson and Lisa Marie Varon were backstage at the February 7th Lucha Underground tapings. Varon has talked about being interested in working for the promotion. She recently moved from Chicago to California.

Charlotte Interview: Redefining Women’s Wrestling, RAW Debut Against Natalya

16

NXT Diva Charlotte spoke to Ted Gruber of Fansided.com this week after losing the NXT Women’s championship to Sasha Banks in a Fatal Fourway match at Takeover: Rival.

Charlotte said the women at NXT are paving the way for a revolution in women’s wrestling that will eventually overtake the way Divas matches are portrayed on WWE television.

“If they were able to play our matches on Raw it would be great to show that the women can work like men. I’m not saying the Divas on the roster now aren’t capable of doing that. but the training in NXT has really helped us. I think over the years with the Divas searches and very little training makes it hard to make the division legitimate. I hope over my career that they don’t like at our matches as a ‘popcorn match.’ I truly believe we are paving the way for a great division.”

She also spoke about her WWE RAW debut back on December 9th, which she lost to Natalya. When asked how she felt when was told she’d her first WWE match would be against a veteran like Natalya, she said:

“To be honest I don’t think about the match itself. I look at this being one of the first opportunities of many that I will have in the future. Just to have the opportunity to whether it was one minute or twenty minutes was great to highlight the future (NXT), and myself.

“Natty has been there for the biggest moments in my career. She was my very first dark match at NXT. She was my first NXT Special match where I won the women’s championship. These were very special moments and I don’t think it could have gone any better.”

Shawn Michaels Talks About One More Match, Possibly With Daniel Bryan

Buy Here from Amazon.com: Wrestling for My Life: The Legend, the Reality, and the Faith of a WWE Superstar

Michaels said he does think about wrestling again, but if he did get back in the ring, it would have to be a unique match that hasn’t been done before. He’s heard people talk about a potential “Teacher vs. Student” match with Daniel Bryan, but that doesn’t really get him excited.

“It certainly is a good idea but it’s one of those ones, I guess from my standpoint, a good idea is one that would really intrigue me. That’s not one of those of those ones where you go ‘Wow, what are the chances of someone coming up with that?’ That’s teacher – student, that’s been done, and again I’m not knocking it, I’m just saying that is not some kind of new, innovative idea. It’s just two other guys doing a very rehashed idea, but we think they can do it well so it will be fun for us to watch. Certainly at its core it’s not a new and fresh idea,” Michaels said.

When asked what kind of match would interest him enough to come out of retirement, he responded:

“Well, I don’t even want to go down that road because then, of course, people will run with it… Most people wouldn’t find it interesting anyway. My tastes I guess are not like theirs. When you’ve done a lot of stuff it’s sometimes those out of the box, strange ones that really pique your interest. For me, I give it about two minutes thought and then I move on because I’m very happy with what I’m doing and where my life’s at right now.”

NXT TakeOver: Rival Reaction: The Future Is Now

50

Last night, NXT held their fifth special event, entitled Rival. It was a night of change, as two titles changed hands and a new number one contender was crowned.

The jewel of the night was easily the main event, where fans saw Kevin Owens destroy his former friend Sami Zayn and snatch away the NXT Championship almost as quickly as he won it. The match started off well, with Owens initially playing the cowardly heel, leading to an impressive spot where Zayn leaped over the referee and top rope in order to take out Owens.

In all, the match was booked perfectly. There was some great in-ring psychology between the two, as Zayn injured his head at one point in the contest after performing a moonsault to the floor. While being checked out by the medical staff, Owens capitalized, hitting multiple powerbombs before the referee was forced to stop the contest. In the end, the juxtaposition of Owens laughing and celebrating his victory while Zayn lay motionless was the perfect way to pass the title to Owens while furthering the “broken friendship” storyline.

The other title change involved Sasha Banks finally capturing the NXT Womens Championship from Charlotte in a fatal four-way match. Anyone who’s seen Charlotte and Sasha compete over the past few months knew this wouldn’t disappoint and it certainly didn’t, as each competitor had some time to shine.

One of the more impressive moments was Charlotte performing a diving crossbody to take out all three of her opponents. Overall, it was nice to see Sasha pick up the victory, and ultimately the title, by pinning the champ in the middle of the ring.
