Paul Heyman Talks About The Next Evolution Of Pro Wrestling

25

RollingStone.com has published a new interview with the one and only Paul Heyman. Heyman spoke about a number of topics, including Monday’s RAW, what fans will remember about 2014 and where he thinks the business is headed. Here are some highlights:

“Paul Heyman Guys” Cesaro and Curtis Axel Not Catching On:

“I think the bar was set so high with the chemistry that Brock and I have, and the chemistry that Punk and I had, that it would be very difficult to match that. It’s not just a situation of, ‘Stick manager A with wrestler B.’ Especially when you’re shooting for the top. I’ve never walked through the curtain with someone I wasn’t trying to audition as a WrestleMania main-eventer, and I never want to. And I’m sure the performers I’ve worked with didn’t want to have an advocate whose goal was anything less. But sometimes the chemistry just isn’t there.”

Brock Lesnar’s Historic Year In WWE:

“If you look back on WWE 20 years from now, I would suggest the two most newsworthy matches [of this past year] were Brock Lesnar conquering the Undertaker’s undefeated streak at WrestleMania, and the most one-sided, uncontested beatdown of a top star in history when Brock hit John Cena with 16 suplexes and crushed him at SummerSlam. I don’t think anything else, from a historical perspective, can hold water to those two.”

The Next Evolution Of Pro Wrestling:

“The next evolution of the business won’t be the actual content or presentation, but the manner in which the business and the content is distributed. I would suggest to you that [with] today’s distribution channels, which are smartphones and other handheld accessories, that the product will skew younger in the next couple of years, because that’s going to be the audience.”

Dolph Ziggler Takes A Shot At CM Punk On Tonight’s Smackdown (SPOILER)

131

On tonight’s Smackdown, during the opening segment, Daniel Bryan introduces Dolph Ziggler, Erick Rowan, and Ryback. They all cut promos and talk about being happy to be back thanks to Sting. Ziggler cut a promo on The Authority and talked about being punished by them. He said he would continue to fight. During the promo there was an obvious shot taken at CM Punk. Here is the line from Ziggler:

“I’d rather sit here in this ring and face any punishment they give me every day for the rest of my life than sit at home on some couch complaining on a podcast.”

It was a good promo by Ziggler and it could have been something he said on his own but I would bet that it was part of the script.

TNA Tapes Lashley-MVP Street Fight, Briefcase Reveals For Impact Wrestling

14

TNA taped some fight scenes in the streets of New York City at the Impact Wrestling television taping in early January. A segment is scheduled to air on Friday’s edition of the show that was taped outside with the idea of presenting a street fight between Bobby Lashley and MVP.

Speaking of pre-taped segments, TNA flew Austin Aries, Magnus, Robbie E., Rockstar Spud and Velvet Sky to TNA Headquarters in Nashville to tape the “Feast or Fired” briefcase reveals on January 13th. This was done in an attempt to avoid having the reveals leaking onto the internet.

Mick Foley On His Wish For This Year’s Royal Rumble, Bryan vs. Lesnar

27

WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley has posted a new blog update on Facebook discussing his “wish” for Sunday’s WWE Royal Rumble event. Foley says Daniel Bryan winning the Rumble and going on to face Brock Lesnar for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship is the best possible scenario for WWE, and frankly, we couldn’t agree more. Foley wrote:

“Quite simply, I want to see Daniel Bryan win the Rumble, so that Paul Heyman can take the reigns and dazzle us with promos which will make Bryan vs Lesnar the greatest David vs Goliath story in recent memory. The Authority can put their stamp on some other match on the card but I would love to see the WWE World Heavyweight championship be about the GUYS IN THE MATCH- and not about who is in power in the company.”

After returning to action last week for the first time in nearly a year, Foley says Bryan is the perfect underdog opponent to challenge the unstoppable force that is Brock Lesnar.

“At Wrestlemania, I would like to see Daniel Bryan systematically chip away at that wall, knock it down, and give the WWE universe a victory they can savor…and more importantly, look forward to. The best present is the one that sits under the tree, neatly wrapped, ready to be torn into on Christmas Day. There’s no need to overthink it. Tie it up in a bow with a Bryan victory at the Rumble, and let us all start counting down the days until we get to open it.”

Kevin Owens On Triple H’s Dedication To NXT, His In-Ring Debut & More

12

The following are highlights of a new Journey Of A Frontman interview with NXT star Kevin Owens:

On what was going through his mind before his NXT debut match: “I wish I could tell you exactly what I was thinking about, but there were so many things going through my mind. I thought a lot about my family because they got me to the point.

It sounds really corny because it seems like that’s what people would say when there’s a big moment in their lives. I thought about my kid, my parents and my wife. I remember at one point, I stopped midway through the ramp before I got in the ring and I clearly remember having a flash of running to the ring in my first match. It was just such a culmination. It’s always been my dream. It’s really hard to describe how memorable that was.”

On Triple H: “All I can say is that Triple H is literally the most dedicated man in sports entertainment, nobody works as hard as he does. I only see glimpses of it when he’s at the NXT tapings and the specials, but he’s always available for ideas. We were talking about what I was gonna do and how I was gonna be presented, he was very hands-on. It’s not just me, he’s got his finger on the pulse of everything we do here. And we do a lot of stuff, there’s seventy people here and he keeps track of everyone.

I don’t know when he sleeps, I don’t know when he works out, but he’s alive and he’s in great shape. From what I can tell, he’s a machine. His dedication is really something to behold. I’m lucky to have somebody like him willing to work with me, just like everybody else I mentioned earlier. He’s another great mind who knows so much more more about this than I do and he’s willing to share it with me and share it with anybody who wants the knowledge. It’s pretty awesome.”

Official Statement From WWE On The Recent Concussion Lawsuit

6

WWE sent out the following statement today:

STAMFORD, Conn.–The following is a statement from WWE:

Unlike contact sports, WWE performers are taught the art of perceived contact, which is cleverly choreographed.

However, there are still some unintentional risks associated with in-ring performances; as such WWE has been well ahead of sports organizations in implementing concussion management procedures and policies as a precautionary measure as the science and research on this issue emerged. Current WWE procedures include ImPACT testing for brain function, annual educational seminars and the strict prohibition of deliberate and direct shots to the head.

WWE has committed significant funding for concussion research conducted by the Sports Legacy Institute (SLI), leaders in concussion research, and WWE Executive Vice President Paul Levesque sits on SLI’s Board.

WWE has never concealed any medical information related to concussions, or otherwise, from our performers.

Backstage Update On Jim Ross Negotiating With Lucha Underground

10

Talks between Jim Ross and Lucha Underground and/or AAA fell through this past week. There aren’t a lot of details regarding what happened that would make negotiations fall flat, however it’s said that there aren’t expected to be any talks between the two sides going forward.

Ross himself noted in his recent online blog that the rumors about his talking with Lucha Underground were completely untrue, although he has said the same thing in the past about negotiations that turned out to be absolutely true.

Backstage Update On WWE Tough Enough: Changes To The Show, Steve Austin Hosting?

16

As reported recently, WWE Tough Enough will be returning soon to the USA Network. The belief is that the new season will begin airing after WrestleMania 31. It’s also believed that the show will be taped at the WWE Performance Center in Florida.

Before the plans for a Tough Enough return were nixed last summer, WWE’s idea was to have only developmental talent on the show, however based on the recent casting call that was issued, pro wrestling experience does not seem to be a necessary requirement to apply.

It was noted that the new season of Tough Enough will have some format changes as compared to past seasons of the show. All we know about the changes thus far is that the new season will have some live, interactive elements to it.

There’s no word yet as to who the coaches will be for the show. Bill DeMott noted on social media recently that he will be on the show, but other than him, no names are floating around yet.

WWE wanted Steve Austin to return to host the show when they were planning to film it in 2014, however his name has not yet been attached to the new season.

Backstage Update Regarding The Status Of WWE Main Event

12

As a bit of an update on the situation surrounding WWE Main Event, negotiations between WWE and Sky Sports have hit a snag and unless things change, WWE will not be able to put Main Event back on the WWE Network until they have geo-blocking put on the live network feed, which at this point is scheduled for late summer or early fall.

WWE Main Event will continue to be taped on Tuesday night prior to SmackDown due to international television commitments.

As of right now, the show will not be available on television in the United States, although it will still be available on Hulu Plus. Given that, it’s expected that the show will be treated like nothing more than a filler show until it’s available to be seen in a major way in the U.S. market.

Kevin Nash Bitter Towards WWE?, Update On Possibility Of Him Being Inducted Into HOF

36

As noted, Kevin Nash has been cleared of all charges regarding the assault case involving his son from Christmas Eve. As a result, Nash’s suspension was lifted by WWE, which allowed him to appear at this past Monday’s RAW Reunion show.

There was said to be a lot of tension from the Nash side of things, not so much because of the suspension itself, but because of how things were handled overall.

Nash noted on Twitter prior to his RAW Reunion appearance that he didn’t think he would ever go back to WWE and appear on their television show.

WWE has talked a lot about potentially inducting Nash into the 2015 class of the WWE Hall Of Fame, a fact that Nash knows about, as his lawyer mentioned it to TMZ when covering his story a few weeks ago.

Looking At A Ton Of Royal Rumble Statistics & Records

29

The annual WWE Royal Rumble pay-per-view, which features the highly entertaining Royal Rumble match itself, a match concept that was created by veteran WWE executive Pat Patterson, takes place this Sunday night in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The Rumble match is a unique version of a Battle Royal, where two men enter the ring, and in timed intervals, which have ranged from one minute to three minutes over the years, new competitors will enter the match. To be eliminated from the match you must be thrown over the top rope, with both feet hitting the floor. This continues until there is only one man standing. The Rumble winner then goes on to receive a WWE World Heavyweight Championship match, usually at the WrestleMania pay-per-view later in the year.

The Royal Rumble is a rare match concept in that it is one of few where rabid wrestling fans will analyze it inside and out. Statistics are a big part of the Rumble, as nearly every year since the match began, fans will look at stats such as who eliminated the most competitors, who lasted in the match the longest, who lasted the least amount of time, and so on and so forth. We saw an example of the statistics craze in a cool video package on Monday’s RAW (which you can check out by clicking here).

On the next page, we’ve compiled a number of interesting statistics related to the annual event, which since 1988 has been one of the “big four” pay-per-views in WWE. Let’s take a look at some interesting facts connected to the unique match.

Dixie Carter On TNA Challenging WWE, If She Regrets Losing AJ Styles & More

68

The following are highlights of a new What Culture interview with TNA President Dixie Carter:

If TNA could ever challenge WWE like WCW did: “Absolutely, I think we can be in that position or we wouldn’t be in business today. We’ve got some exciting things on the horizon and our television partners worldwide are really stepping up and are committed to growing our brand, and that’s a big part of it.

In the United States, we have one, two hour television show every week and we want to be developing the programming and doing some exciting new strategic things to grow our company in ways that we’ve never even had the opportunity to do in the past. So 2015 and beyond looks very bright for us.”

If she regrets losing AJ Styles from TNA: “Of course, I regret [it] and I miss a lot of people who are no longer a part of our roster, but I think that’s what so great about our company is that hopefully, at some point, he will be back, and so will others. I look at this past year with Matt Hardy returning and Low Ki returning, and Rhino and so many others.

I think it makes for great TV and when they came back, all the characters were so fresh, and besides, AJ was so synonymous with TNA, and to me, he’ll always be a part of our family.”

Her gender being an advantage or disadvantage in the industry: “To me, it’s been an absolute advantage. I think, in the first several years, people didn’t know quite what to make of me. I’m a very positive person and a very different personality to what they had experienced in the industry before. You know, I really care about them and I care deeply for this group of people who work for us and for the fans of the show and I think it’s an absolute advantage in corporate meetings and behind the scenes with the talent.

There’s just a different perspective, I think sometimes. I mean, I can deal with a man, I have no problem, I’ve done that my entire career. It just gives you a unique perspective, it’s helped me and played to my advantage many times.”

Her thoughts as she was about to go through a table: “My head was a complete blank, honestly! It was very surreal. I was in Los Angeles last week and I was watching a video highlight reel that Discovery had put together for Destination America. I was watching all the different episodes and the crazy things that I had done last year, and, you know, I was looking at that person going “Who is that?” [laughs], and then I see her about to be powerbombed from the top rope through a table….to me today, it’s so very surreal.

I just tried not to think about it and tried not to worry about it and just do it. I felt like, every single day, I’d sit behind the cameras and watch…and to our company and our fans and our television show, I just felt like it’s the least I could have done, to show them how much I respect what they do and just a small way of saying thank you. I don’t think I expected to break my back, but at least it makes for a good story now!”

The one thing she would change from her past in TNA: “Oh wow, I’ve never been asked that question before! I think the thing I would change would be to realise that just because someone’s been in this business a long time, doesn’t mean that they have the magic silver bullet that’s going to change everything. People who’ve been doing this successfully in the past, and their experience, doesn’t necessarily mean that that will work today.

Times have changed, viewing habits have changed, social media has changed so much about the world we live in today, and how we experience life. I think I would have not put so much stock in that, and would have looked beyond for fresher outside ideas earlier.”

Main Event Announced For ROH’s 13th Anniversary PPV On March 1st

1

ROH issued the following …

The Main Event Has Been Set for the 13th Anniversary Pay Per View

With Ring of Honor’s 13th Anniversary on the horizon, the ROH World Championship scene is in chaos. But with a championship so universally respected, it should come as no surprise that so many ROH stars are all in hot pursuit of gold – and it’s up to Head Matchmaker Nigel McGuinness to make the final decisions. It’s an unenviable task, and it’s only getting more difficult. Neither Michael Elgin nor Tommaso Ciampa is known for being calm and collected. Two of the most driven – and volatile – athletes in the history of ROH, both Elgin and Ciampa believe they are the rightful number one contender. And it looks as if they are willing to destroy everything in their path until one of them gets a title shot!

Ciampa’s ROH career could have ended at FINAL BATTLE when he collided with an official and violated the “zero tolerance” policy governing his reinstatement. But as we saw on ROH TV, Nigel McGuinness stepped in and made the call. While he does believe that Ciampa accidentally struck an official he ruled that this is Ciampa’s last chance. The zero tolerance policy remains in effect and Ciampa will be held fully responsible if he violates it.

If it’s about earning opportunities, who has done more to elevate himself in the past year than Hanson? Nigel has already decided to make the night’s scheduled contest of Elgin vs. Hanson a Number One Contender’s match. That battle would have been incredibly heated no matter what, given the growing rivalry between the competitors. But then Nigel added Ciampa to the mix! The resulting three way match recently aired on ROH TV, with many calling it an early match of the year contender! But the hostilities couldn’t be contained, and the match degenerated into a disqualification. We STILL have no number one contender.

We really can’t discuss the top contender without talking about the ROH World Champion, Jay Briscoe. One of only two men to capture the title twice, Briscoe never backs down from a challenge. And with several ROH stars gunning for him, he’s sworn to go “all in”! The champion himself has asked that all three men with a claim to the number one contender status get a shot at him – because he can beat them all!

After taking the time to consider all the options, Nigel McGuinness has finally decided. If Jay Briscoe wants to go “all in,” then what better place than Las Vegas? Now it’s official. Live on pay-per-view on March 1st.

HIGH STAKES FOUR CORNER SURVIVAL FOR THE ROH WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
Jay Briscoe (c) vs. Michael Elgin vs. Tommaso Ciampa vs. Hanson

With just one match confirmed, Ring of Honor’s 13th ANNIVERSARY is already a must-see event! If you can’t be there live, you can watch on pay-per-view.
