Backstage Update On Bonus System In NXT, NXT Talent To Be Paid Extra This Weekend?

4

NXT contracted performers have not been given bonuses based on working events with bigger gates outside of their usual shows at Full Sail University in Winter Park, Florida. This includes those who worked the NXT event in San Jose, California during WrestleMania weekend, a show that drew over 5,000 paid.

The main reason WWE does not offer bonuses for these shows is because NXT live events and developmental in general are currently money losing businesses. Developmental loses money largely due to the fact that so many talents are under guaranteed contracts. Also, as a promotion, NXT only runs three live events locally in Florida, at the most, drawing 200-300 fans. They run the shows to give talent experience in front of a live crowd, and because there are no travel expenses for NXT talent working in Florida, the feeling is that they are being paid to learn.

It’s worth noting that when NXT talent are brought to WWE live events, they are paid for those shows and have their road expenses covered as well.

This Saturday’s NXT Takeover: Brooklyn event will have a live gate of around $700,000, which is an incredible accomplishment for the brand. The Finn Balor vs. Kevin Owens and Sasha Banks vs. Bayley title matches are the headlining attractions, and traditionally those involved would receive a bonus based on the gate, however that may not be the case with NXT Takeover: Brooklyn.

Owens is now on a main roster deal, and Balor’s deal is said to be different than the traditional developmental deals because he was already an established star in a major league promotion, so they will both likely receive bonuses of some kind for Saturday’s live special.

The real question is whether or not Banks and Bayley will receive bonuses. Banks may also be on a main roster deal now, and if that is the case, she would get a bonus as well. What this could mean is that Bayley could be the lone performer among the four in headlining spots that will not receive a bonus due to the fact that she is under a regular developmental deal.

Matt Hardy Talks About TNA’s Future, Most Grueling Ladder Match Story & More

5

Matt Hardy recently took part in a A.M.A. session with the r/SquaredCircle community on Reddit to promote his new shoot interview, available at TheWrestlingBundle.com. Below are some of the highlights.

On the most painful spot he’s ever been involved in: “Probably when my abdomen ripped in half, allowing my intestines to thrust outside of it. Indescribable pain. There’s been too many painful moments throughout my career to truly rank them though.”

On the best thing about no longer working for WWE: “The absolute freedom that it allows me. I make my own schedule. I work when I want to, I take off when I want to. The WWE is the best-an incredible company-but if you’re there full-time, it really consumes your life.”

On if he prefers being in the same company as Jeff, or if he enjoys when he’s allowed to do your his thing: “I love working at the same place as my brother, it’s an added bonus. But yes, sometimes it’s nice to have separation between our wrestling characters, as it’s hard for Matt & Jeff Hardy to be in the same promotion & NOT team as the Hardy Boyz. I love performing as a singles and it helps me highlight what I feel like are strengths of mine that aren’t always on exhibit when Jeff & I team.”

On the most grueling ladder match he has ever been in: “My toughest Ladder Match was the one vs E & C that happened the first night WWE was on TNN. All 4 of us (Me, Jeff, Adam & Jay) were all terribly hurting & physically spent from the Cage Match the night before at Unforgiven. We weren’t supposed to wrestle AT ALL that night, yet ended up in a brutal, long Ladder Match that day. I remember none of us were overly happy with our performance that night–we just weren’t physically able to produce the kind of performance that we wanted to that evening.”

On the current status of TNA: “First off, I love working at TNA right now. The locker room & working environment is great & the freedom that TNA allows it’s wrestlers is unparalleled. What happens with TNA & Dest America in the future? I’m honestly not sure. I hope they continue to work together. If not, they’ll look elsewhere for domestic distribution. Internationally, TNA is doing phenomenal business. I’ll openly admit that TNA is in a rebuilding phase after the Hogan-Bischoff era. There may be bumps in the road, but TNA is not going out of business & will soon be starting another period of growth.”

On if he has ever accidentally wrestled with stuff in the pockets of his cargo wrestling pants: “HA! You are absolutely right, they are handy to wear backstage. Great observation! I always put my hair-tie in my right pocket of my pants before wrestling–that’s a strict ritual of mine. I was one time about to make a coffee & had my match bumped up to be earlier. After taking a superplex, there was packets of Sweet N Low in the ring that I’d never taken out to put in my coffee.”

Natalya Talks About Not Getting To Be Part Of WWE’s “Divas Revolution”

13

WWE Diva and Total Divas star Natalya recently spoke with Newsday about a number of current topics. Below are some of the highlights from the interview.

On WWE Divas getting more exposure these days: “It’s very very cool to see the girls get some serious recognition. Because for most of my WWE career I think when people think of Nattie, they think Nattie kind of embodies women’s wrestling. For me, I was never a model. I was a wrestler. I wrestled in Japan, I wrestled for my family, I’ve done jiujitsu and martial arts — I wouldn’t say I was ever involved in MMA, but I did train in Brazilian jiujitsu and just tried to make myself as well-rounded as possible so I could be as best as I could be in the ring. So to see the Divas actually getting a chance, it’s great.”

On watching the current Divas Revolution storyline from backstage: “Watching the girls, in some ways it’s a little bittersweet because I watch them and I’m so proud of them and so excited for them and I would love to get back in the ring with the Bellas and get in there with Charlotte and Sasha Banks and Becky Lynch and some of the new blood. But with WWE, you have to just let the world unfold and everything happens for a reason and we tell stories. So maybe they’re saving the best for last.”

Tanner Talks Tough Enough, His MMA Career, The “F-Word” & More

5

Eliminated WWE Tough Enough contestant Tanner Saraceno recently spoke with Scott Fishman of Channel Guide Magazine about his MMA career.

“I had a good streak going before I broke my ankle during a fight,” Saraceno said. “The fight was stopped because my coaches realized my ankle was broken. I was stubborn so I kept fighting. They noticed my ankle was dangling in the air, and I wasn’t using it. They had the fight stopped. I had a surgery. They put six screws and a tightrope through it. I think they said I should be out for a year before I should fight again. Six months later I had a fight for a middleweight championship for the USSFC organization and ended up winning via TKO. Then I found out about Tough Enough.”

Tanner also talked about the differences and similarities between pro wrestling and MMA.

“There was nothing they gave me I couldn’t do,” he said. “So my MMA background fit in there. I could definitely see some crossover between the two worlds. That being said they are two different sports. These people in WWE, these superstars are freak athletes. Between what they do to their bodies, how they look and what they are doing day after day. It is definitely something to respect what they put their bodies through.

“I can assure you it’s not the f-word (fake). Having been in there and taking some bumps, we haven’t done nearly as much of what goes on in a full match. If you wake up sore, I can assure you it’s real. And we haven’t even done nearly what it takes to be at the superstar level yet. So I have a ton of respect for the superstars and their dedication to look the way they do and perform the way they do.”

Paul Heyman Calls Seth Rollins The Most Successful NXT Call-Up Of All-Time

17

WWE performer Paul Heyman recently spoke with CBS Sports to promote this Sunday’s WWE SummerSlam pay-per-view at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. During the interview, Heyman was asked the secret to maintaining his friendship with Brock Lesnar.

“I’ve never let him down,” Heyman said. “I always tell Brock Lesnar the truth. I don’t appease Brock Lesnar. I don’t placate Brock Lesnar. When Brock Lesnar asks me for an opinion, I give to him an honest opinion that I’m willing to back up with facts, with theory. It’s never just what he wants to hear, or what benefits me the most. And I get the same from him, I assure you.”

Heyman also sang the praises of current WWE World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins, noting that he has “risen to the top faster than anyone else that has been called up so far from NXT.”

“I think Seth Rollins is a perennial champion for the next decade,” said Heyman. “I think in the same way that John Cena and Randy Orton are multi, multi-time champions from 2005 on, I think that is now Seth Rollins’ position. I think Seth Rollins is in the title picture for the next decade. He has established himself as a main event performer. He has delivered on every occasion that he has had the opportunity to perform. And he has risen to the top faster than anyone else that has been called up so far from NXT. So I think Seth Rollins is just at the very beginning of his career as a main eventer.”

Heyman continued, “I mean, Seth Rollins was involved in the main event of this year’s WrestleMania, but he wasn’t advertised as a main event at this year’s WrestleMania. We have yet to see Seth Rollins have the opportunity to perform in a WrestleMania main event. I don’t think you’ve even seen Seth Rollins scratch the surface of what he’s capable of doing.”

With Paul Heyman in his corner, Brock Lesnar goes one-on-one with The Undertaker in “the rematch too big for WrestleMania,” this Sunday, August 23, 2015, at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York at WWE SummerSlam, live on pay-per-view and on the WWE Network.

Eva Marie On Having Issues With Other WWE Divas, Training With Brian Kendrick & More

15

WWE Diva and Total Divas star Eva Marie recently spoke with Crave Online to promote this Sunday’s WWE SummerSlam pay-per-view at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Below are some of the highlights from the interview.

On if Brian Kendrick had her study any particular film or style: “Absolutely! He didn’t specifically tell me to stay with any certain style but he had me watch film from Japanese wrestling to old school matches with WWE. I watched a lot of super crazy Tajiri matches, which were insane to me because of that style. It’s so fast doing moonsault after moonsault after moonsault was pretty impressive. I just pick and choose from different matches and different eras. Things are always changing but a lot of things are the same just with different little flavors.”

On her NXT ring attire getting the Internet buzzing and how she came up with the look: “That was collaboration between Brian [Kendrick] and myself. His wife actually made my robe for me. I love the old school wrestling. That’s what I watched with my brothers so I wanted to bring back the over the top pageantry, the glam, and no Diva on the roster has an entrance like that so I wanted to be different and bring something new into the generation that I’m in right now.”

On why she has had so much animosity against her during this season of Total Divas: “To be honest, I don’t know the root of the animosity. I’m really just trying to train and get better at my job so I can get on those girls level and be able to entertain and put on matches that everybody is happy about. That’s where I’m coming from. The funny thing is, I’m in California and in Orlando. I’ve been training at the WWE Performance Center as well. It’s just the fact that the times I’m not in Orlando training at the Performance Center, I’m getting in the ring with Brian Kendrick. I’m doing the best that I possibly can with both situations. I’m working on the NXT live events and I go out to Orlando two weeks out of each month so that I can train.”

On what it’s like to work in front of NXT crowds: “For me it’s awesome! I just recently had my fifth singles match so it’s pretty incredible because that crowd is so close not only to the ring but it’s just such an intimate crowd so you can really feed off of however they feel or whatever they take to in the match and it’s a really big interaction between entertainer and fan, which is awesome.”

On what she ultimately hopes to get out of all of this: “I want to be able to bring the WWE Universe with me wherever I go and with whatever I am doing. I want to bring them on this journey just like how they’ve been following me on the last six months through me training and progressing in the ring and and now it’s walk with me to my first match. That was another little step and I want to continue to do that and bring them with me throughout everything, which is a lot of different things and different avenues and really integrate WWE with mainstream as well as be a positive role model and let them know that if you dream something you can definitely achieve it as long as you’re willing to put in the hard work and don’t let other people get in your way.”

Chris Jericho Talks Lesnar vs. Taker, Vince Being The Boss, Hogan Scandal & More

17

Part-time WWE performer Chris Jericho recently spoke with Sports Illustrated’s Extra Mustard blog to promote this Sunday’s WWE SummerSlam pay-per-view. Below are some of the highlights from the interview..

On the reason he’s still around: “I’ve gone far beyond having to do anything for any financial reasons, but it’s a good time to go out there in the ring and it’s very second nature to me. Mentally, it’s still there, and you think about things a little differently after doing this for 25 years. Physically, I feel better than I felt ten years ago. I just started doing yoga five years ago, and it just changed everything around for me, as far as the soreness and the level I had of pain I’d feel during or after a match. But the most important reason I still do this is because I enjoy it. It’s a lot of fun, and I like working with the younger guys–it reinvigorates my desire to continue. Those guys work a lot like the gang of guys from my generation, and that gives me a kick, as well.”

On his current WWE status: “I do as many shows as I can to keep my foot in the WWE door, so I’m not gone for a year at a time. I’ve been off TV for a year, but I’ve worked 50 shows in the interim just doing live events, which, to me, is a lot more fun. I’m also working with all of the younger guys–I worked with Kevin Owens two weeks ago when Cena broke his nose–and that’s fun, too. Anyway I can be involved, I enjoy it. When it comes time for me to be full time, we’ll figure out what I’m going to do and I’ll come back.”

“The invitation is there 365 days a year. It’s not like I’m auditioning for a job with the WWE. It’s the other way around, ‘Give us as many dates as you can. You want to just work weekends? Do it. You want to just work TV? That’s fine, too.’ They leave it up to me, and I like working the schedule I’m on now. I like working the weekends. I don’t have time to commit to doing TV. For example, I don’t work weekends when we have Fozzy shows. I’m working the ones that I’m choosing, but I have the invitation to work 300 days a year with WWE if I wanted.”

On Tough Enough: “We’ve never seen anything like this version of Tough Enough, where it’s half-reality and half-live. When you start something new, there is a little bit of process to see how you’re going to make something work. So, as the weeks have gone by, I’ve increased my presence in the show. I was in the ring helping the competitors work out and book their match [last week], so being involved a little more in the reality portion of it balances out what I’m doing on the live part, as well. It’s been a lot of work, but the show has come into its own. People are always going to complain, ‘I wish it was that way,’ or ‘I wish that guy stayed,’ but it’s a whole new world for us that we’ve created. It kind of reminds me of when the Elimination Chamber happened. We’d never seen one before and there wasn’t anything to look back on, so you had to figure it out as you went along. And that’s what we’ve been doing, and it’s been working out–and it’s a great series so far.”

On the recent Hulk Hogan scandal: “I’m nobody to judge anybody. I’ve had just as many issues as anybody else. But you stand by your friends in good times and bad times, and Hulk’s my friend. That’s all I’m going to say about that.”

On Vince McMahon still being the boss: ?“Until the day he leaves this earth, Vince McMahon is in charge of every aspect of the company. It’s his company and it always will be. He’s giving out more responsibilities but, at the end of the day, anyone who was any responsibilities delegated by Vince still has to get final approval by Vince. He’s still the boss. I work with him very closely on Tough Enough every Tuesday in the direction meetings, and he still has a lot of great ideas. He still has his finger on the pulse of what’s going on. And it doesn’t matter what you hear other people say–everybody who works in the WWE knows who the boss is.”

On Brock Lesnar vs. The Undertaker at SummerSlam: “Undertaker has to win. There is no way he loses twice. Brock is at his best when he’s there to just fight. “That’s why his match with Reigns at WrestleMania was so good, and that’s something Lesnar and Undertaker didn’t do as much as they could have in their match at WrestleMania [30]. That pull-apart we saw a couple weeks ago on Raw between Lesnar and Undertaker will be the type of match we’ll see. It will be a rough fight. I’m sure they’ll exchange many false finishers, and each one will do the other’s finishing move, but it will be more violent and more hard-hitting. Any time Undertaker is on the show, you know it’s going to be a great show.”

Video: Paul Heyman Sings “Glory, Glory, Brock Lesnar” At Sam Roberts’ Live Podcast Taping

8

This afternoon, I attended the live taping of the Sam Roberts Wrestling Podcast at Caroline’s On Broadway in New York City. It was a very enjoyable 2-hour event and we’ll post a link to the podcast when it goes live on Friday. Shortly after making his entrance, Paul Heyman busted out another rendition of “Glory, Glory, Brock Lesnar” that rivaled the performance we saw on Monday’s RAW.

After finishing – Heyman spotted the Cesaro Section right in front of the stage and joined in on the action, once again showing his support for everyone’s favorite Swiss Superman.

WWE Files Multi-Million Dollar Lawsuit Against International TV Partners

10

WWE has reportedly filed a lawsuit against CTH, their television partner in Thailand and Malaysia, who has apparently stopped paying their rights fees to WWE.

WWE signed a five-year deal for 2014 through 2018, for RAW, SmackDown, Main Event, NXT, Superstars, Bottom Line, Vintage Collection, Afterburn, This Week In WWE and all pay-per-view events. The annual rights fees were to escalate, starting at $2.8 million in 2014, to $3.64 million to 2015, $4.55 million in 2016, $5.69 million in 2017 and $6.83 million in 2018, bringing the total value to $23.5 million.

One thing worth pointing out is that in the contract, and possibly in other international contracts, is that RAW must be three hours through the end of 2018, so WWE will likely have to redo all of their international deals if for some reason that ever changes. However, as of right now, USA Network ratings have been declining overall, so WWE is becoming more valuable to the network right now, not less.

WWE U.S. Champion John Cena celebrated his 500th wish through the Make-A-Wish Foundation during his appearance on NBC’s “Today” show on Thursday morning. Cena surprised Rocco Lanzer, an eight year old kid who was diagnosed with Leukemia in January. Cena had already visited Rocco in the hospital a few months ago, but Rocco was too sick back then. Cena commented during his appearance:

“A lot of times when people donate time or resources, there’s a little speculation about where it goes. I’m at the finish line. I get to see the families; I get to see the joy and the hope that we bring. I’ll continue to be involved with Make-A-Wish as long as they’ll have me.”

Cena brought Rocco WWE gear, including tickets to an upcoming WWE RAW show. Cena will celebrate his 500th wish during an event at Dave & Busters in Times Square in New York City on Friday. Stephanie McMahon, Sheamus and The Bella Twins are also scheduled to appear.
