Jon Stewart To Host WWE SummerSlam

8

WWE issued a press release on Monday afternoon to announce that comedian and talk show host Jon Stewart will be the special celebrity guest host of this year’s WWE SummerSlam pay-per-view, which takes place this Sunday, August 23, 2015 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Jon Stewart to Host SummerSlam

After 16 epic years as host of “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” Jon Stewart has announced his retirement plans. What will Stewart do next? A trip to Disney? A run for President? A one-way trip to Mars? No, as first reported by USAToday.com, Stewart is set to host SummerSlam, this Sunday, Aug. 23, at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT live on WWE Network.

Stewart, a longtime member of the WWE Universe, appeared earlier this year in an ongoing rivalry with now-WWE World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins. After Stewart taunted Rollins on social media, Rollins appeared on “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” where he challenged Stewart to appear on Monday Night Raw to settle their score.

Most recently, Rollins appeared in a look-back segment during Stewart’s final few days on “The Daily Show.”

Stewart stepped down from his post as host of “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” on Thursday, Aug. 6. During his tenure, Stewart welcomed a wide array of high-profile guests, including President Barack Obama, former President Jimmy Carter, Clint Eastwood, Halle Berry, Ben Affleck, Jon Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen, Derek Jeter, Shaquille O’Neal, Bill Gates and many more.

This year, SummerSlam has been extended to a four-hour broadcast plus a one-hour pre-show beginning at 6 p.m. ET on WWE Network. Emanating live from a sold-out Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., SummerSlam will feature The Undertaker against Brock Lesnar in a rematch of their historic WrestleMania clash where The Beast Incarnate ended The Phenom’s undefeated streak.

Paul Heyman Talks In-Depth About This Sunday’s WWE SummerSlam PPV

6

Paul Heyman recently took part in a Q&A with WTOP out of Washington, D.C. to promote Sunday’s WWE SummerSlam pay-per-view. Below are some of the highlights.

On what Brock Lesnar is doing to get ready for SummerSlam: “The same thing he did to get ready for Wrestlemania 30. He’s training, he’s hunting, he’s eating right, he’s getting ready to just walk in the ring and destroy The Undertaker.”

On if Brock has to up his game to beat Undertaker again: “I think The Undertaker is the one who needs to up his game. I don’t understand why anybody doesn’t understand the correlation here. I don’t think The Undertaker wanted to lose at Wrestlemania 30 either, but he had no choice in the matter. He got his ass kicked by Brock Lesnar, he got beaten by Brock Lesnar, he got beat up by Brock Lesnar, he got victimized by Brock Lesnar, and he got conquered by Brock Lesnar. And the very same thing is going to happen next Sunday at SummerSlam.”

On The Undertaker’s time being up: “I didn’t say Undertaker’s time is up. That’s putting words in my mouth. I think if The Undertaker picked a fight with anybody right now, The Undertaker would easily win. I don’t see anybody being able to stand up to The Undertaker. There’s not a man alive right now that can step into the ring with The Undertaker who’s this driven, this focused and now has something to make up for since he lost at Wrestlemania 30. The problem is, The Undertaker isn’t fighting a man, he’s fighting a beast. He’s fighting a conqueror. He’s fighting a once-in-a-lifetime athlete named Brock Lesnar. So it’s no slight to The Undertaker that he’s going to get his ass kicked by Brock Lesnar. Any human being who steps in the ring with Brock Lesnar is going to get his ass kicked. It’s not even a fair fight!”

On why fans should look forward to John Cena vs. Seth Rollins at SummerSlam as well: “It’s a double title match. It’s a pretty interesting situation where one man is going to walk out with the undisputed WWE Heavyweight Championship of the World and the U.S. Championship, so it’s certainly not a match with just typical stakes on the line. It’s a match with both titles on the line, which I think is a unique situation with two of the top stars of not only the past year, but the past decade.”

Great Khali Talks About Randy Orton Giving Him Pain Pills So Strong His Legs Went Numb

20

Former WWE Superstar The Great Khali was recently profiled by the Indian Express newspaper in a piece looking at this wrestling school, Continental Wrestling Entertainment (CWE) academy. Khali spoke about his WWE run, operating his school at a financial loss and more.

One of the more interesting items from the interview was that Khali discussed Randy Orton providing him strong pain pills early in his WWE career to help with his knee pain. Khali noted that the pills were so strong, he couldn’t feel his legs and fell down as a result. #Wellness

Here are the highlights of what he said about:

Working with John Cena and Vince McMahon’s reaction: “A good match is about the chemistry between opponents. I loved working with Cena. He was always receptive to my ideas, even if they weren’t good. Because he was ready to try things, we delivered a great match. When we got backstage, McMahon hugged me and said I had put on a great show.”

His Wrestling School: “I still want to keep some connection with this industry. This was something I was born to do. I was always meant to be Khali. I dream of wrestling all the time. And then I get up and I realise that I am not wrestling anymore. But I still keep my pants with me — both in India and in Houston. You never know.”

Randy Orton giving him strong pain pills early in his WWE career: “The pills were so strong that I couldn’t feel my legs. My foot kept slipping and I fell.”

Khali started with WWE back in 2006, so the incident he’s referencing likely took place around 2006-2007. Orton has been suspended from WWE 4 times over the years for violating WWE’s Wellness policy (2005, 2006, 2007, 2012)

Bully Ray Reacts To UFC President Dana White Calling Wrestling Fake

8

Former WWE, TNA & ECW star Bully Ray is the latest pro wrestler to react to UFC President Dana White’s comments about wrestling being fake. During a recent appearance on the Chad Dukes Wrestling ShowRay pulled no punches and explained why “fake“ is such a bad word to describe pro wrestling:

“When it comes to the in ring action and physicality of what goes on in there, there is nothing fake about it. I put up a tweet the other day comparing pro wrestling to Cirque de Soleil. Cirque de Soleil is a choreographed athletic performance, so is wrestling. Does that make Cirque deSoleil any less real? All of the things that they’re doing, all the physicality, the gymnastics, the trapeze, the flips, the falls, everything, it’s all real, just like it is in the middle of a wrestling ring.”

“The term that I have always loved for pro wrestling and I don’t think many people in the United States have maybe even heard this term. It’s cool I like to refer to it as fighting opera.”

“As far as Dana is concerned, listen, he went out there he said something and I fired back with how I believe. I was not pissed, I’m not mad, I did think that he should have apologized to the wrestling world, not me individually or anybody individually. Come out and say, ‘Hey you know what, sorry I used used the word fake it’s definitely the wrong word.’ Because listen, if it wasn’t for pro wrestling, things like MMA would never exist. Pro wrestling is the foundation. Pro wrestling is the grandfather of all of these types of mixed martial arts and anything like that that you see on TV. Whenever there’s a pro wrestling aspect to the UFC is when they draw the biggest number. And that’s not just me talking out of my ass, Brock Lesnar was a professional wrestler first and a UFC fighter second. When they do their highest ratings when the pro wrestling guy was there. You know why? Because he had personality and he’s larger than life. So to say what we do is fake or you know the professional wrestling business doesn’t matter. It’s kind of ignorant.”

Big Show Talks About His WWE Career Winding Down, Transitioning Into Movies

13

Big Show recently spoke to DigitalSpy.com to promote his new WWE Studios film Vendetta and commented on his days as an active competitor winding down.

Big Show has been plagued with “Please Retire” chants at WWE live events and shot down the notion when Michael Cole asked him about retiring prior to Battleground, but the 2015 Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal winner now says his days in the ring are numbered.

In response to Mayer Nissim of Digital Spy asking if Vendetta is the start of him scaling back his in-ring work in favor of movies, Big Show replied:

“I think absolutely. I’ve had a fantastic career – I’m still competing on a full-time schedule, but nothing good lasts forever. So eventually I’m going to have to transition out of this industry and do something else that’s entertaining and exciting for me.

“I think a natural evolution for me would be to try to transfer over into the film and TV world and start playing different characters. Hopefully that way I can keep entertaining my fans that are fans of me, in different avenues and different spotlights. It’s a natural evolution.

“Am I a little sad that my wrestling career is towards its end? Well, yeah, because this has been my life for 20 years. But I think I can continue to help some of the younger guys get over and develop and find out who they are then find a pleasant transition for myself. I’m not quite in the old folks’ home yet, I’ve still got more to do.”

Other topics discussed include Brock Lesnar vs. The Undertaker at SummerSlam, his feud with Ryback and more.

Paul Heyman Tells Story About Getting Caught Sneaking Into Meeting By Dusty Rhodes

2

Paul Heyman recently spoke with FOX Sports’ “The Buzz” and told a story, which he partially told on his WWE DVD, about sneaking into a NWA production meeting in the early 1980s.

“I snuck in early, sat in the back row with a baseball hat on so I wouldn’t get noticed, because I wanted to learn. I was 18 years old,” said Heyman.

From there, Heyman revealed that he ended up getting caught sneaking into the meetings by the late WWE Hall Of Famer Dusty Rhodes.

“Yes, he noticed me and called me outside the room. He said ‘what are you doing here?’ and I said ‘I’m here to learn from you.’ He said ‘You picked the right person, because I’m a super genius baby,'” Heyman said. “He told me to go back in the room. He went to the bathroom, and then came back and continued the production meeting.”

Finally, Rhodes approached Heyman later in the day and asked him what he learned from sitting in on the meeting.

“I noticed the way you formatted the show. He liked it and said the next time I was at one of the events to feel free to join his production meetings. I wasn’t there all the time because they weren’t based out of New York, and I was. But I would try to make it any time they had a pay-per-view or TV. I grabbed the bull by the horns and ended up sitting in the front row,” said Heyman.

Jim Ross Blog: Thoughts On Tonight’s RAW, SummerSlam, Issue With Titles

2

WWE Hall Of Famer Jim Ross recently updated his official blog with his latest thoughts and comments on a number of topics. Below are some of the highlights.

On SummerSlam “go-home” edition of RAW: “Key, Monday night RAW broadcast especially as it pertains to what WWE does with the main event of Summer Slam, Brock vs.Taker. After the massive, multi person pull apart of a few weeks ago, what’s next? More physicality? No physicality? Another award winning @HeymanHustle promo? Will Heyman fall prey to the Undertaker?

There are always several, right ways to do something good on a pro wrestling show which is why the biz is so subjective. Nonetheless, Lesnar w/ Heyman vs. the Undertaker is the primary match fans are paying to see come this Sunday night in Brooklyn. It’s a little predictable if Taker wins to even the score against Brock to set up a rubber match at WrestleMania but that’s not what I would do.”

On what he would like to see at SummerSlam: “I’d love to see clear cut winners and losers in the two main events at Summer Slam including the Title vs Title match featuring Seth Rollins vs. John Cena. For some reason, I see HHH getting involved in this match and not for any specific reason as to why.

In today’s world, it seems that most fans are non plussed when it comes to untimely disqualifications and count outs. Keeping the fans happy, content and enjoying the product has to be any company’s #1 priority.”

On his issue with wrestlers and titles: “Does it bother anyone else that so many pro wrestling champions carry their titles over their shoulder to the ring instead of wearing them? That makes the titles look even more like a show biz ‘prop.'”

Video: Honky Tonk Man Talks About Issues He Had With Roddy Piper Before His Passing

4

HTM and Piper had some Twitter exchanges earlier this year after Piper called HTM an “assh*le” on The Adam Carolla Show and said he was jealous.

HTM claimed that as far as he knew, he and Piper were on good terms when he passed away and he was recently looking to appear on the “Piper’s Pit” podcast. He also noted that the two were supposed to meet up at a wrestling convention in California to smooth things out.

“We were going to kind of bury the hatchet, so to speak, and find out really what our problem had been, that I wasn’t aware we had one,” said HTM. “But I was looking forward to seeing him and talking about it.”

Lana Responds To Fan Criticism Of Her Character Not Wrestling

22

Late last week on Instagram, Lana sent a lengthy response to a female WWE fan who posted a critical message asking her whether she finds it awkward that people only enjoying watching her perform because she’s attractive. The fan feels that since she doesn’t wrestle, her character is limited, and therefore unable to carve the legacy she often vows.

The fan wrote, “Lana do you find it awkward how many people only like you because they think you’re hot rather than enjoy your character? And that we’ve yet to see you do anything to give yourself a legacy but that’s all you ever post about? I think your character seems a sweet woman but until you wrestle I don’t see how anyone can adore you other than how you look because like we don’t see much of your character other than your character escaping a toxic relationship and growing stronger and more confident.”

Lana responded, “awkward no I find it exceptionally awesome what I do. Are you saying Paul Heyman hasn’t created one of the most epic legacies ? He will be remembered more than 98% of women and men that ever wrestled in WWE. How about Stephanie McMahon? She picked wisely when to wrestle and when not to wrestle. I am not here to be adored I am here to help create compelling stories. I don’t have to fight and wrestle everyday because I am that good at what I do. This is WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) and I bring the BIG E to the WWE. And thank you, if I can help one person stand up for themselves & leave a toxic relationship, then my story is more then worth while. Thank you.”

This is not first time where Lana has responded to fan criticism of her character. In June, she replied to a fan who ripped her character for turning into a “starry-eyed love struck dope” due to her alliance with Dolph Ziggler.

GiGi Says Paige Is Her Guardian Angel, Explains Why She Started Watching WWE Again

8

Giorgia “GiGi” Piscina, who was eliminated from Tough Enough on last week’s show, spoke to Scott Fishman of Channel Guide Magazine. In the interview, she talks about how supportive Paige was of her.

“Early on in the competition she was giving me a little bit of heat, but I think she was just trying to see how I can do under pressure,” she said.

“Coming to the end of it, she has been my guardian angel. She saved me last week. You can see she was disappointed that I left the competition now. I know people have been sending messages and tweets where she commented on one of the videos online saying the only girl talent that was left was gone, and well done WWE Universe or something like that. She was definitely supporting GiGi, which was incredible. I look up to her for being so unique and staying true to herself. She doesn’t change for anybody, and I think that is what makes Paige so great.”

The 21-year-old also talked about watching WWE as a child, with Rey Mysterio being her favorite. She explains why she began watching the product again.

“I lost touch as I got older. Before the last year or so I’ve been watching Total Divas. I got addicted to that. It kind of brought me back to WWE because I saw their lives. So then I wanted to see them in the ring and wrestling. It kind of threw me back in. I’m glad that happened.”

Piscina also discussed her Tough Enough elimination, Lita, what’s next for her, and more. The interview is available here.

Paige Talks Brock Lesnar vs. Undertaker, If John Cena Will Wrestle At SummerSlam, Stephen Amell

5

Speaking to Mike Jones of DC101, Paige discussed the Divas Elimination Match at SummerSlam, if John Cena would be ready to go at the event, Brock Lesnar vs. Undertaker, confiscated food at the airport, why isn’t she the face of Doc Martens, and more. Highlights from the interview are as follows:

Helping the new NXT Divas – “I try and help them out as much as possible but luckily all the girls are great and will give them advice, give Sasha advice. They’re really lucky all the girls are super nice up here because back in the day that wouldn’t have happened.”

Stephen Amell at SummerSlam – “We were in Vancouver and Victoria this weekend and he came both days to train really hard. He’s a really awesome celebrity to have because he really wants to do it and he loves it and he’s actually really good. He’s actually one of the best celebrities we’ve had do something in ring.

“Usually our fans are not very welcoming to non-wrestling celebrities but the crowd loved him, everyone backstage loved him, he did a really good job and we’re proud of him.”

Will John Cena be ready to go with his broken nose – “Everyone thinks he’s like a superhero because he heals so quickly, quicker than anyone. I think he’s ready to go and strong enough to go so hopefully we’ll get to see the match.”

Watching Brock Lesnar vs. Undertaker with the other WWE Superstars – “Some of us will sneak out in the arena because the atmosphere is so intense and awesome. I went out for the main event of WrestleMania and I’ll go out for this too!”

Jonathan Coachman & ESPN Coming To SummerSlam

19

As reported on Saturday evening, former WWE announcer Jonathan Coachman has been teasing an appearance at next Sunday’s WWE SummerSlam pay-per-view.

Coachman, who worked in WWE for years before leaving to work at his current place of employment, ESPN, will be at the show at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York to cover the event for the sports channel.

After dropping hints on social media, ESPN’s P.R. team has confirmed that Coachman will be in Brooklyn covering the event for ESPN’s SportsCenter.

The belief is that while ESPN won’t be covering SummerSlam like a major “SportsCenter on the Road” type of coverage that they give other major sporting events, Coachman will be at the show specifically to cover it as a reporter for ESPN.

Whether or not he appears on the show in some form or fashion remains to be seen.
