Jerry Springer Talks About Tonight’s RAW, What He Expects, The Bella Twins & More

5

The following are highlights of a new E! Online interview with Jerry Springer:

On the issues surrounding The Bella Twins: “I think it’s something deeper. Because if you’re twin sisters, you wouldn’t let something like the Stephanie McMahon situation break you up. I mean, you’ve had a life together. There’s probably some resentment on one by the other and so I think there’s a deeper issue there. This is either the straw that broke the camel’s back or it’s the thing that set it off. Two twins that get along wouldn’t let that break them up—you have that whole blood is thicker than water argument. But my guess is the intensity of the relationship in either direction, the love or the hate, is gonna be more severe if you’re twins.”

On what he expects from tonight’s RAW with The Bella Twins: “I don’t know that anything works and I don’t have any preconceived notion. I think the idea is that once I’m there in the environment with them and watching how they react or what concerns them, then hopefully something comes to mind, but if one of them is determined to keep the fight going, they’re not going to be talked out of it. You just have to see if there is a common ground that would make them think it’s better to be back together again as twins and have each other’s back, but if they don’t feel that, it’s not gonna happen and there will be chaos.”

On which Bella Twin he prefers: “Assuming that I don’t want to be hurt, I won’t answer that question. Either of them could beat me up and let’s be honest, I’m a 70-year-old man. Who’s not going to beat me up? I just hope everyone has the sense not to hurt me.”

  • Brock Lesnar: Who’s Next?

    60

As everyone knows by now, the Beast and the (former) Champ will once again square off in less than two weeks at Night of Champions. This contest will be John Cena’s championship rematch and figures to be the last time the two competitors will square off.

Since losing his title last month at SummerSlam, John Cena has been running through the roster, destroying everyone in his path while being booked as a threat to Lesnar. Along the way, he wiped out the entire Wyatt Family, took out Seth Rollins, and has vowed to kick Lesnar’s ass during their next meeting.

John Cena will hope to exact a bit of revenge in two weeks at Night of Champions.
John Cena will hope to exact a bit of revenge in two weeks at Night of Champions.

It seems apparent that Cena will not be reunited with his precious championship belt. Instead, he is being booked very strong in an attempt to make things believable, but he could be hurting other members of the roster during the build (Bray Wyatt, in particular). It makes little sense to have Cena run through one of your top guys (especially one who was building momentum) like he’s a nobody when there are plenty of other guys that could have done the job.

Nonetheless, the build in this case is not as important as the aftermath. The consensus seems to be that Cena will not regain his title in a few weeks at Night of Champions. This leaves fans with one question: Who is next for Brock Lesnar?

The Beast Incarnate has expanded his deal to allow for the company to book its champion for more dates, but it remains to be seen who his next opponent will be. It’s likely that Lesnar will hold the title until WrestleMania to generate interest before passing it on to the next generation, leaving many pay-per-views between now and March.

  • Backstage Update On Another Cable Network Possibly Picking Up Impact Wrestling

There has been some speculation recently that the WGN America cable network may pick up TNA Impact Wrestling since they are dropping their Chicago sports programming in January.

WGN is close to about the half-way point of what is a two-or-three year process of converting their near-75 million households to a basic cable network.

Although there have been rumors that claim WGN may pick up Impact Wrestling, many consider it unlikely due to the fact that the network cancelled WWE programming a few years back.

  • Summer Rae Talks About Total Divas, Rosa Mendes Being Disliked

    2

WWE Diva Summer Rae was a guest on Turnbuckle Weekly with Chuck Carroll and spoke about the new season of Total Divas on the E! Network. The full interview can be heard at Cleveland.CBSLocal.com and begins around the 26-minute mark.

Summer Rae said she’s happy to no longer be the new girl on Total Divas, which will have its third season premiere on Sunday. That title now belongs to Rosa Mendes, who didn’t get the warmest reception from other Divas.

“The new girls who don’t know much about her, I’m sure the veterans have said don’t trust her or this or that,” she said.

She noted that she chose to judge Mendes on her own merits, but skepticism among the other Divas will play a role in the third season of the show.

Summer Rae said the five-week break she had from WWE while filming The Marine 4 afforded her a fresh start with a lot of the Divas, but said Natalya wasn’t quite ready to let bygones be bygones.

“I really didn’t have a problem with her coming into the season. After doing the movie I kind of wanted to start fresh with everyone,” she said. “Unfortunately, sometimes you can’t start fresh if both people don’t want to. So, Nattie is definitely a wound that will perhaps [be] reopened this season.”

    Other topics discussed include:

    * What to expect on Total Divas this season

    * When filming wrapped for the third season

    * How her relationship has improved with WWE Divas

    * How her grudge with Nattie may play out in Total Divas

    * How breaking from Fandango will impact her career

    * Rosa Mendes joining the cast

    * Cold shoulder give to Rosa by other Divas

    * Her top secret role in The Marine 4

Here are some more highlights of what she said about:

What to expect this season on Total Divas:

“This season is so much drama. Of course we have a new Diva, Rosa, coming in. A fiery Latina that stirs the pot to say the least. Thank goodness it’s not just me anymore. We have a wedding, baby news, scares, a possible break up… it’s crazy.”

    Breaking from Fandango:

“I loved being paired with Fandango. A couple of the girls (who are paired with guys) were asking me about this the other day… I love the partnership of Diva and Superstar. It gives you a great opportunity to show personality and become a character without having to be in the ring. It’s very tough to get that character across if you’re only working and wrestling. … I’m just trying to figure out who I am now and not get lost in the mix of only being a Total Diva… I have some ideas and things like that.”

    Starring in The Marine 4:

“I’m not going to say my weapons were bigger and cooler than The Miz’s, but my weapons were WAY bigger than The Miz’s… The thing with Total Divas is you get to see the behind the scenes, which you wouldn’t get until the DVD came out… My specific character in (the movie) is very top secret until the show comes out, but what I will say is Mike was extremely helpful to me and very professional on the set. I definitely saw a different side of Mike than “The Miz” that he is backstage. He was great. He is really good at doing acting.”

Vince Russo Explains Why He Lied About Working For TNA, Talks TNA/Spike TV Issues

    10

The following are highlights of a new Pro Wrestling Report interview with Vince Russo.

His last run with TNA: “I had been working with them just as a consultant since October (2013) so I was there for the last 10 months. I was told by John Gaburick, I guess he is vice president of talent and creative that he told spike of my involvement in working with TNA in January. so to set the record straight, if John Gaburick is telling the truth and I have no reason doubt him, spike knew about my involvement with TNA going back to January. To say that Spike found out around it right around the time contract negotiations broke down, That is just an untruth.”

Lying about doing consulting work with TNA: “From the get-go my job at TNA hinged at nobody knowing I worked for them. It was going to be secretive. I didn’t like that from the get-go. I don’t like to be dishonest and not being in the open and to hide things. I don’t like that and I felt very uncomfortable. The fact of the matter is, that’s what Dixie Carter wanted. I did my best for 10 months and do the best i could do for what they wanted.”

His thoughts on why he was asked to re-join the company in October 2013 and why it was kept a secret: “When they first signed me on, Eric Bischoff was still very hands on with the product. I thought that they just didn’t want Eric Bischoff to know that Vince Russo was back working on the product in a consulting role. As everyone knows, soon after Eric Bischoff was sent home. Yet the secret still remained. I think that Dixie may have just been afraid about the feedback she would get from the internet community about what their feelings would be to have Vince Russo back working with TNA.”

Why he thinks the Internet Wrestling Community hates him: “Here’s the thing. I’ve been working in wrestling for over 20 years now. No nobody from this internet wrestling community has ever approached me or confronted me about anything. They just report what they have heard from another party. What they heard from hearsay. What they heard from this ‘source’ that nobody knows about. Nobody has ever dared to confront me as you and I are having this conversation right now.”

“The point is this. the internet wrestling community is just a small part of the audience. My job as a creator is to make the highest rating I possibly could. When you are talking about high ratings you need to talk about the appeal to the masses. When you need to appeal to the masses you can’t exactly do things the internet wrestling community wants you to do them. You are more or less going after a broader appeal of that casual fan. So because I did not represent wrestling the way they (The internet wrestling community) wants it. That’s what started the personal attacks ‘I’m a moron, I’m an idiot, I don’t know what I’m doing’”

The issues between Spike TV and TNA: “I’ve been holding this back for years and I finally get to say this. I felt like Hannibal Lecter when he was strapped in and had his mouth wired shut. Spike TV is a horrible partner. Why TNA would ever want to partner with Spike is beyond me unless there were no other options. If Spike TV were the only option to stay on television then I would understand it. They are a horrible partner, they know nothing about the wrestling business. The way they advertised and marketed the program over the years was absolutely atrocious.”

“I can tell you this from a position where I worked with the USA network. I worked directly with Bonnie Hammer. She was the female version of Vince McMahon. She knew what she was doing. When you had Bonnie Hammer at USA and Vince McMahon, the sky was the limit. If TNA signs another deal with Spike TV great for them. It will move along for another two years and everyone will work but the product will not grow on Spike TV. My hope for TNA is that a new network comes along and embraces TNA and gives them the time and investment to help grow the product. I can’t say this enough. TNA ON SPIKE TV WILL NEVER GROW!”

His relationship with Dixie Carter: “You know here is the thing. I’ve worked with Dixie Carter for over 10 years now. Every time I sat back and watched while Dixie brought in new leader after new leader. I know full well how things were going to turn out and where it was heading. But my job was the television part so I never got involved. I always took on this attitude of looking out for Dixie Carter and looking out for her interest and I think Dixie knows that. That’s why I think there will always be a relationship between us. I just wanted to have the best television show and protect her.”

Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff coming into TNA: “You know here is the thing. I don’t know. I’m not privy to how much they made. I don’t know how much they affected international markets. I didn’t look into how much business they were able to ascertain with the Hulk Hogan name in other markets. I never looked into that. In terms of the impact they made on a week to week television show, I can say that it just wasn’t there. I don’t think it was realistic that some people thought that the rating was going to go from a 1.4 or whatever it was to a 2.4 or 3.4. It doesn’t work that way. But I also thought it was never going to work from the get-go to be honest with you.”

    4

As noted in the past, Brodus Clay took part in a “YouShoot” interview with the folks at Kayfabe Commentaries. During the discussion, Clay talked about knocking out some of Adrian Neville’s teeth during a match in NXT. Below is an excerpt where Clay talks about this story.

“He came off the top rope and his face hit my head. As we went down, I t-boned him out of it, his teeth actually stayed stuck in his mouthpiece. He didn’t know his teeth were out until he got in the back. But he got brand new teeth out of it. Actually, he lost 1 real tooth. The other 2 were fake that were bonded together. He lost 3 but 2 weren’t really his. So I’ll take credit for the one. But then he got 3 new teeth and they’re all the same color. So if anything, it’s a come up for him (laughs).”

10 Most Influential Superstars in WWE History (Part 2/2)

    91

As promised, here is the second half of the list.

    5. Goldust

    Goldust_Attitude

Many fans incorrectly identify the rise of Stone Cold Steve Austin as the beginning of the Attitude Era – the most profitable period in WWE history. However, there was someone who came along and changed the game long before Austin would cut his Austin 3:16 promo on Jake Roberts. That person was the man known simply as Goldust.

The son of the “American Dream” Dusty Rhodes, Dustin Runnels had shifted back and forth between the WWE and rival WCW during the early 90s before ultimately signing with the WWE in 1995 as Goldust. The character was sexually suggestive, frequently engaged in behavior that was considered homoerotic, and was unlike anything the WWE Universe had ever seen.

Goldust was a pioneer in pushing the WWE away from the traditional face/heel booking that the company had relied upon for years in favor of a product that was appealing to adults and featured morally ambiguous characters. Had the product not shifted back to a PG rating, Goldust would be even higher on this list, but as it stands, he is still one of the most important superstars in company history.

Vince Russo Writes Open Letter To McMahon Family After Watching RAW

    82

Former WWE and TNA writer Vince Russo wrote the following open letter to Vince McMahon, Stephanie McMahon and Triple H after watching this past Monday night’s edition of WWE RAW. The letter comes courtesy of Russo’s official website, PyroAndBallyhoo.com.

    Dear Vince, Stephanie and Hunter,

First let me apologize for my rant last night on Russo on Raw. I’m Italian, I’m emotional, I’m sorry I get that way sometimes. Come to think of it, you probably witnessed it first hand in a galaxy far, far away—many light years ago. The truth is—I hate to criticize RAW. I really do. Having been there and done that, I realize how difficult it is to come up with two hours of compelling content every week – let alone three. The job is not easy, I understand that, and nobody can be criticized for TRYING and giving their BEST EFFORT—nobody. But . . . the question I have to ask is: “Is what we see every Monday Night honestly and truly your best effort? I just know that having worked with all three of you in the past, I don’t think any of us would have been satisfied, or even ALLOWED last night’s show to air in its final form. Are we seriously not better than that? What happened to our mantra during the Attitude Era when this week’s show was going to be better than last weeks? Remember that, Vince?

I don’t know what it is. I don’t know the structure, because I am not there, but nobody—NOBODY—can tell me that with a bit more effort you couldn’t be doing better than what WE THE PEOPLE are being exposed to every Monday Night. Look—we all love wrestling, we are all HUGE fans of the WWE and in all truthfulness—WE WANT TO LIKE THE SHOW!!! But, you just make it so difficult. Asking anybody to sit through three hours of what you’re currently putting on the air is not only asking too much . . .but, it’s also unfair.

Look, I’m not going to tell you what to do, or how to do it, who am I? All I’m asking is that you all ask each other—is this the best that World Wrestling Entertainment has to offer its fans? If the answer is yes, that I guess I’ve just over-rated you, however, I think we all know that’s not the answer. I don’t think any of you can walk away from that building on Monday night honestly believing that you had just put your best foot forward. I don’t believe that for a second.

Right now, you have an UNBELIEVABLE talent roster, up and down from first match to main event, but the writing and producing of the show is just not serving them justice. You have to know that. What happened to the work ethic and the commitment that we all shared during the Attitude Era? What happened to that passion, when we literally used to leave our own BLOOD, SWEAT and TEARS on the script that we wrote. If something didn’t exceed our expectations we were sick over it for days—I know I was.

Vince, Stephanie, Triple H, YES we will always be here no matter what. We support you, and we support the WWE, but the truth is . . . we deserve better. And, deep down inside I know that you know that.

    With 1,000% sincerity.

    Peace,

    Your Former Head Writer

    Vince Russo

  • Ricky Steamboat On His Final Run In WWE, Dolph Ziggler’s Potential & More

    15

The following are highlights of a new Shining Wizards podcast interview with WWE Hall Of Famer Ricky Steamboat:

On becoming Ricky Steamboat: “The late Eddie Graham gave me the Steamboat name. In 1976 I walked into the Tampa office and there sat Eddie Graham, and Verne Gagne had sent him pictures of me wrestling as “Rick Blood,” and Eddie said what a great wrestling name- but for a heel. He then said we had a guy here in Florida named Sammy Steamboat and he was from Hawaii. What I would like to do is call you Ricky Steamboat, but I will not bill you as his son. How about you be his nephew? I told Eddie, “you can call me anything you like. I’m just happy to have a job.” The very next night in West Palm Beach- and this is a story that not too many people know… I don’t know if I’ve ever told this story live like this, I told it to a couple friends and some wrestlers- but the story goes that the next night in West Palm Beach, I’m the first match. I’m standing in the ring and the ring announcer goes “Ladies and Gentlemen, we have a substitute this evening. Rick Blood is unable to make it.” And I’m standing there and I completely freak out and forget that I’m Ricky Steamboat. So I make my way up to the announcer in the middle of the ring and I’m saying, “I’m here! Hey, hey, look, I’m right here!” And the announcer puts the microphone behind his back and off the side of his mouth says, “Stand in the corner, kid. Get over there and stand in the corner.” So I go back to the corner, and he says “Give it up, Ladies and Gentlemen, for the nephew of Sam Steamboat, Ricky Steamboat!” And the crowd jumped out of their seats, and I’m looking around with my mouth open. The first thought that comes to my mind is, “Oh, this is what they do when they know you or when you get over.”

On never working heel & wanting to: “I never had a match where I worked as a heel. When I started in 1974, I was always a face, and the reason for that was that the heel would always lead the match. Now for me to graduate to be a heel, most times you started out as a face, and then when you got good, you would transfer over to a heel and you were the guy in charge. So I never had an opportunity to work as a heel, although in and around 1991, I expressed my desire to work as a heel and the response that I got back was it would never work. Pat Patterson said that I was the consummate babyface and it would probably hurt my career. I tried to push it to them hard and said, “Let me go under a mask and let me go under a full suit and cover up my body. I won’t throw any chops and I’ll just kick and punch and I’ll be a heel. Then the big surprise, if we can carry this thing through, after about a year or so, have somebody finally takes the mask off, hopefully the response we get from the fans will be ‘Oh my God, all this time it’s been Ricky Steamboat,’” but they wouldn’t buy it.
On being legit knocked out by a Jake Robert’s DDT: Well you know, I’ve talked about this on other radio stations and in public. They always bring that up, and I want to make this clear that I wasn’t knocked out. I know people watching that, you could hear the splat of my head hitting the cement floor. I know how to take a DDT, and he knows how to give it. You know he was the best in the business, but I just got caught off guard and my forehead hit the cement. I had all my faculties. I was working. My body language was dictating what would happen to a guy if that happened. Jake Roberts was trying to pick up a dead body and I was limp and everybody was thinking that I was knocked out, but I wasn’t. I mean, it sounded like a hand grenade went off in my brain and it wasn’t too long afterwards I had such a lump appear on my head. I mean I looked like Elephant Man. It was huge and there was water and fluids built up underneath. It was huge, but I wasn’t knocked out.”

His last run as a performer in WWE: “A lot of the guys say that, but during the match there were moments where I knew I was a step off, and that’s just Mother Nature. I like to go 100 miles per hour when I hit the ropes, and I knew I was a step off. I wasn’t as flexible as I once was. One of my biggest things before the match was having a lot of the guys ask me what I do before a match. Some guys like to run in place, some would do push-ups, some do warm-ups. I really focused on stretching. I really think that helped me throughout my career. Getting back to the match: God, it was such a great feeling. I had a lot of déjà vu coming back over me in that match with (Chris) Jericho. I was so happy he took care of me.”

On the superstar he’s most proud of: “I was not coaching at the time, but a guy that I’m really, really proud of when I was a producer/agent, with Arn Anderson & Dean Malenko, is Dolph Ziggler. You could talk to him and see it in his eyes that he would get it. He knew what you were talking about. It wasn’t like you just go out there and do something for the sake of doing it. I always told him to have a rhyme and reason. I give this example: You’re having a match and you’ve been working on this guy’s arm and the guy’s gotten away from you a few times but somehow you’ve been able to get back to that arm. The story that you’re telling is that you’re trying to wear the guy’s arm down. Then you have a moment to which he gets away and you end up in the turnbuckle and he charges with a high knee, and you move. He hits the top turnbuckle with his knee and goes down and grabs his knee. I look at Zig and I said, “Dolph, what do you do?” And he said, “Well, I grab the arm.” I said, “You got it, kid.” Most times, the answer I get is “I grab his leg.”

His favorite match with his favorite opponent, Ric Flair: “This was a match where George Scott was the booker. And I’m going back, say 1979-80. Back then they had time limits and most of the main events had 60 minutes. And we wrestled to a draw. Back then we called them Broadways… George (Scott) said I don’t’ want to beat Ricky & I don’t want to beat Flair, so we wrestled 60 minutes to a draw. I’ve never wrestled anybody as many times as Ric Flair to one hour draws. So we are in Charlotte and this night Flair is going to go over and he was going to cheat, and George said you don’t have to go out there and go 40 or 50 minutes. Just give me a good solid 20. So we’re out there and the flow is going so good after 20-25 minutes that we go 45-50 minutes. The crowd has seen us wrestle so many times to the draw that they’re already calling it. Fifty-five minutes in and the announcer announces: 5 minutes left… 4 minutes left… 3 minutes left… 2 minutes left… 1 minute left in this contest. Then 30 seconds, 15 seconds, and as he starts the countdown 10… Flair hooks my legs and I go down on my back and he puts his feet up on the corner and the ref counts 1-2-3 with 3 seconds left on the clock… I laid there and Flair was laying there, because normally in a Broadway the last couple of minutes you’re really kicking into fifth gear. And I’m painting a picture that I’m trying to pin him all over the place. It’s false finish after false finish because the people understand time’s gonna run out for Ricky. And all of a sudden, he yanks my feet out as he’s begging off in the corner, and throws his feet up on the second rope, and the ref jumps down and counts 1-2-3. There was a hush over the Coliseum, and then all of a sudden it erupted… and they were throwing so much crap at Flair as he was trying to make his way back to the locker room. Coke cans, popcorn, cups… and I just stood there watching him cover up his head and try to make his way to the back… and then I looked up at the people and said, “We got ya.”
