NBA Star Dirk Nowitzki Talks About Not Attending Monday’s RAW In Dallas

20

Dallas Mavericks NBA Star Dirk Nowitzki recently spoke to The Full Court Press about not appearing at Monday’s WWE RAW show in Dallas, Texas.

Nowitzki noted in the article that he used to be a big wrestling fan, but has since grown out of it. “I actually went to that a couple of years ago,” said the NBA star. “When I first got here when we were still at Reunion (Arena), it was fun. I was a huge Hulk Hogan fan and Ultimate Warrior and all that crap.”

Nowitzki concluded, “But that’s a long time ago, so I guess I grew out of that.”

  • Jim Ross Blog: WWE’s TV Negotiations, Tag Division Heating Up, Lesnar-Heyman

    0

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has posted a blog update at JRsBarBQ.com. Here are some highlights of what he said about:

WWE’s TV Negotiations: “Interesting article in ‘Variety’ on the WWE TV situation. The WWE brand is an amazing franchise with loyal fans who will follow their brand to any network much like NASCAR or the NFL, among other franchises. The network in the USA that obtains the TV rights for WWE content will have a proven winner on their hands and that new relationship, if it happens, would start in the all of 2014.”

“It’s essentially impossible to find another sports-entertainment entity WWE’s name identity and that has no off season and produces new, original programming weekly. That’s a great sales pitch in addition to adding to the loyal, fan base.”

Highlights From Variety’s Article On WWE’s TV Negotiations

WWE’s Tag Team Division Heating Up:“Seeing all the tag team action reminded me of back in the day when Jim Crockett Promotions used to feature ample, tag team wrestling highlighted by the Jim Crockett Memorial Tag Team Tourney. I enjoyed being a part of that process and feel, if presented creatively, that a similar tournament would be a nice, TV attraction. Tournaments are naturally episodic in how they are structured so the ‘story’ of the process is organically in place.”

“Tag Team wrestling allows multiple talents to get viable, TV exposure. Plus it builds upon their individual personalities and encourages talents to creatively mesh with their partner in some shape, form or fashion. If it’s a good presentation, the fans win because the competition is enhanced and the creative directions that a tag team match can take are essentially endless.”

Paul Heyman & Brock Lesnar’s Returns: “I’d also expect Paul Heyman to return to WWE TV soon as the serious build to WM30 begins in earnest, as usual, after the New Year and leading into the Royal Rumble. That means that one can expect to see Brock Lesnar return as well. I’m still of the belief that Lesnar’s TV persona will get significant and much needed exposure in one form or another to make the “Next Big Thing” as valuable an asset as possible for whoever he faces at WM30.”

Paul Heyman Teases Brock Lesnar vs. Randy Orton

There’s much more to this blog update, including JR’s thoughts on Monday’s RAW, Roman Reigns’ breakout potential as a singles star, Daniel Bryan’s role at WrestleMania 30. Head over to JRsBarBQ.com to read the full blog entry.

Jim Ross Q&A: Has CM Punk Surpassed HBK? Ryback-Goldberg, Cruiserweights & More

    18

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has updated his Q&A section of JRsBarBQ.com. Here are some questions he answered.

Has CM Punk surpassed Shawn Michaels?

“You are comparing apples to oranges, so to speak. Punk has not surpassed HBK in the ring as no one has in my view. The two are different entirely entities but both are big time players.”

Did you ever get the chance to do commentary with JBL?

“Never just the two of us.”

Did He & Jerry Lawler know about Mankind getting thrown off & through Hell in a Cell in advance?

“We were unaware that Foley was coming off the Cell as I’ve anwsered many times before. The less we knew about what was going to take place the better we were as a team.”

Which title is more prestigious – the Intercontinental or United States?

“Hmmm…I’d guess long time WWE fans would favor the IC Title but that’s merely my opinion. It also likely matters on who the particularly champion is.”

Rumors of Ryback getting heat for using Goldberg’s moves:

“I don’t know how to comment on internet rumors plus I’m no longer with WWE or around the talents to know what is going on. Ryback seems to have potential but he’s still a on going work in progress.

Why WWE never effectively pushed Cruiserweights:

Company philosophy inasmuch as labeling talents as cruiserweights or light heavyweights, etc puts an unfair and inaccurate less than positive label on them. Plus, talents that could not adequately verbalize in English wold have had issues getting and staying in the main event level.

Why WWE changed Steven Regal’s name to William Regal:

“Too many other guys named Steve to add another one was likely the thinking at that time.”

Update On WWE’s TV Rights Fees Negotiations, SmackDown Going Live On A New Night?

    13

Variety.com has published an exclusive story looking at WWE’s upcoming TV rights fees negotiations which have the potential to bring in significant new revenue for the company. Here are some highlights from the article:

    – For the first time ever, WWE will be negotiating all of its programming (RAW, SmackDown, Main Event, Total Divas, Saturday Morning Slam) in a package deal. WWE Chief Revenue and Marketing Officer Michelle Wilson says that by packaging all of their content together,

“We’re letting the marketplace determine if it’s interested in all or piece … We’ve had to evolve our thinking. We are clearly entertainment-based, but if you think about the characteristics of our brand, it’s live action, and that’s sports. We want to be compensated for a live audience, since live content is getting a very significant premium in the marketplace.”

     – WWE currently brings in $139.5 million per year in TV licensing fees. The company sees their programming as heavily undervalued, especially when you compare it to the blockbuster deal that NASCAR landed over the summer. NASCAR signed a 10-year deal with NBC and FOX worth a staggering $820 million per year.

NASCAR airs 154 races per year and averages a 1.38 household rating per show, with 92% of their viewers being white people over the age of 50. By comparison, WWE airs 156 episodes per year with a 2.2 household rating – and 44% their audience is under 34, a coveted demographic for advertisers.

    –  WWE is considering airing SmackDown live every week. Due to scheduling, the show would likely need to move to a new night. Even though a live edition of SmackDown would result in higher costs for WWE, the company is willing to air SmackDown live every week in exchange for better TV rights fees. WWE Chief Strategy and Financial Officer George Barrios said:

“The value of live content has gone from becoming important to essential. As a network, if you don’t have live must-see content your existence comes into question.”

    – 90% of “Raw’s” and “SmackDown’s” viewers watch the shows live or within the next day – making the shows “DVR proof.”

    – Other TV entities that have shown interest in WWE programming include A&E, Disney, Viacom, 21st Century Fox, and Discovery.

    – Official negotiations with other networks can’t take place until February 15th, when NBCU accepts or rejects WWE’s final offer.  Other bids are due by February 28th – with WWE set to have a deal in place by March 4. If WWE does leave NBC Universal and take its programming to another network, the move would not take place until October.

Paul Heyman Teases Brock Lesnar vs. Randy Orton

    33

Less than 24 hours after Randy Orton captured the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at Sunday’s TLC pay-per-view, it appears wrestling’s evil genius is already potting his destruction.

During Monday’s WWE RAW, Paul Heyman tweeted the following, a sign that the two youngest WWE Champions in history could be crossing paths some time soon:

Comment below and tell us if you’d like to see Randy Orton vs. Brock Lesnar – and who you think would be victorious.

Roman Reigns On Possibly Leaving The Shield, Becoming Singles Star & More

    22

The following are highlights from a recent Chicago Now interview with WWE Superstar Roman Reigns:

On his WWE debut: “It was a literally a rush. Looking back at it I felt like I was so unprepared. The funny thing is that day they wanted us to come out during the Triple Threat Match, with literally riot shields. They gave us turtlenecks and stuff and it didn’t really fit us, so we made a few adjustments. We were the new guys so all the eyes were on us and they wanted to see what we were made of.”

“After that match, after we walked through the curtain, it was high fives all around. From that day forward, the three of us made a pact that we are in this together and whatever happens, we do it together.”

On their entrance through the crowd: “I don’t know if it was creative or us but once the idea popped, we immediately said yes. I think it was a little bit of both, but we jumped on it. It’s a part of us now and it’s good for the show. I think it’s something that makes the aisle seats ‘hot seats’ because people want to be on TV or see us walk down the stairs. It’s a special bond with the fans and I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

On his family background in the sport: “My big brother is a huge part of my career. I’m experiencing a lot of things that he has gone through and I can always ask him about anything. Anytime I can reach out to him and get some advice he’s always willing to talk and answer questions.”

“It really helps me ease my mind when I know I can talk to somebody who has gone almost everything.”

On coming up with Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins: “I can’t say enough about Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins. Those guys have busted their ass in the independent circuit. We were all on the same page because we were all hungry. We all wanted to be the best and that will never change. We have a strict regimen; workout, eat and wrestle. Sometimes we sleep but in the end we do it together.”

On possibly leaving The Shield and becoming a singles star: “Even though I’m part of the Shield, I’m still my own individual wrestler. Deon Sanders was on a team his entire career, but he was still him. When it comes to comes to team fighting I will be there ready to roll but again I’m still me. There’s a lot of strong personalities in this business and I’m right there at the forefront.”

“Whatever path I’m put on either with a group of guys or by myself I won’t change my mindset. That’s how I was born and raised doing anything.”

Mark Jindrak Talks About His WWE Release, Being Pulled From Evolution & More

    12

Former WWE Superstar Mark Jindrak recently spoke to Pro Wrestling Mania about his WWE release back in 2005, being pulled from Evolution & more:

“On July 5, 2005, I received the call from then head of talent John Laranitus, saying that WWE had released me. It sure was a weird feeling. Wrestling was the only real job I had ever held. Was it the end? Was my career going to be best remembered for a “Reflection of Perfection” gimmick? Or would I be remembered as the henchman in the Kurt Angle faction along with Luther Reigns? Actually what most people now remember about my WWE days is something that never happened. I was locked and ready to be the fourth member of the prestigious group Evolution. But…. at the last moment they pulled the plug on me and later replaced me with Batista. Damn!! (Ron Simmons voice) haha.

“Now I wasn’t just going to quit. Shortly after my release in ’05, I linked up with Matt Morgan and we did numerous tours to Japan as a tag team in New Japan and Hustle. This went on til early 2006. I had decent success but the truth of the matter was Japan wasn’t for me. The tours were few are far between, jet lag and long flights killed me and the language barrier was really difficult. Although I loved Japan, I didn’t think it was a place that I would further my wrestling career.”

    14

WWE Intercontinental champion Big E. Langston was a recent guest on the Chad Dukes Wrestling radio show on CBS radio in Washington D.C. You can listen to audio of the appearance at ChadDukesWrestlingShow.com. Here are some highlights about what he said about:

His Dream Opponents: “There are a few guys. For me it’s kinda cool to think about guys you grew up and you idolized. Undertaker has a spot where he has that allure, and that mystique, and everyone always kinda goes to Undertaker as being their guy, and rightfully so. I was also a huge Vader fan, so if they were ever able to bring him back for one, I think that would be cool as well. I know there’s been talk possibly, and I have no idea if it’s gonna happen, about Batista possibly coming back. You know guys like that, you grew up watching idolized, you know they’re all kind a dreams who knows if they’ll ever come to fruition.”

His Relationship with John Cena: “He’s been very helpful over the past few years, even before I got called up. Just giving me advice, he opened up the weight room to me. I live about 15 minutes away from his gym. He’s been very helpful, just kinda giving me pointers throughout the way, just giving me advice, and really just trying to be a mentor in many ways. I’m really grateful for him taking time to help and guide me. Honestly, he’s done that for a lot of younger talent, people just don’t see that.”

What Happened After RAW Went Off The Air

    3

Here are some live notes from last night’s WWE RAW: from Dallas, Texas:

    – The arena was only around 80% full, which is not good for the Dallas market, which almost always sells out.

    – The live crowd was very surprised by Shawn Michaels’ return. Several fans also noted that it was unclear that the main event was a non-title match until mid-way through the show.

    – WWE showed a lot of footage of Hulk Hogan during the commercial breaks, which got a big reaction from the crowd.

    – After RAW went off the air, John Cena defeated Randy Orton via disqualification. Booker T was the guest referee and the finish came when Orton kicked Booker T in the gut. Cena eventually through Orton out of the ring and Booker T did a Spinaroonie to send the crowd home happy.

    WWE RAW Opener:

The post WWE TLC edition of WWE RAW opens with the entire WWE roster out on the stage as Triple H’s music plays and Michael Cole welcomes us to the show. In the ring, Triple H and Stephanie McMahon introduce the new WWE World Heavyweight Champion Randy Orton.

Orton makes his way out and the sea of WWE Superstars make way so he can pass through. Orton stops for a moment, notices John Cena and Daniel Bryan on each side of him, smirks, and raises both the WWE Championship and World Heavyweight Championship. Orton enters the ring and says everyone bought into the myth that he’s had everything handed to him in his career. He talks about winning the unification match. Orton tells the Superstars on the stage that he is better than all of them. As Orton continues to speak, Cena cuts him off from the top of the stage by calling him an idiot. Cena tells Orton he’s talked enough and he needs to put up or shut up. Orton says he’s not giving him his rematch tonight. Cena says he’s not talking about himself. Cena is talking about Daniel Bryan. The crowd chants “Yes! Yes! Yes!” Orton says he doesn’t have to listen to Cena, he doesn’t have to listen to anybody. Stephanie cuts him off and says, “except us.” Orton continues to babble as we see Stephanie and HHH whispering something to each other in the background. HHH makes the main event tonight Orton vs. Bryan.

Goldust & Cody Rhodes vs. Big Show & Rey Mysterio

This match was voted on by the WWE Universe prior to RAW, with Big Show and Rey Mysterio winning the poll. The bell sounds and Rhodes and Mysterio start things off. Mysterio beats up Rhodes a bit early on. The match spills out to the floor with Mysterio doing a cool slide under the bottom rope into a splash on Rhodes on the ground. Back in the ring, Rhodes hits Mysterio with a disaster kick for a near fall. Rhodes follows that up with a longly held inverted suplex for another near fall. Rhodes tags in Goldust and Goldust picks up where his little brother left off. The fans chant “you still got it” to Goldust as he continues the attack on Rey-Rey.

Goldust and Mysterio both make tags and Big Show clotheslines Rhodes down to start off their battle. We head to a mid-match commercial. When we return from commercial Big Show is in the middle of man-handling Rhodes. Big Show does the “shush” sign to the crowd and chops Rhodes. Rhodes tries fighting back but Big Show hits him with a big boot to slow him down. Big Show puts a choke on Rhodes that he remains stuck in for quite a bit before dropping down for a jawbreaker on Show to break free. The fans start chanting “we want Goldust” as Big Show continues to control Rhodes in the ring. Big Show hits maybe the loudest chop he’s ever executed in his life on Rhodes that got a huge pop from the crowd and the announcers. Big Show goes for a flying elbow smash off the middle rope but Rhodes moves. Rhodes makes the hot tag to Goldust and the golden one goes nuts on Big Show until Show chokeslams him out of nowhere. Big Show goes for the pin on Goldust but Rhodes breaks it up.

Big Show throws Rhodes out of the ring and dodges a cross-body attempt from Goldust. Big Show hits the KO punch on Goldust and helps Mysterio up to stand on Big Show’s shoulders. Mysterio comes off with a flying splash. 1-2-3. Big Show and Goldust win what I guess was a non-title match.

Winners: Big Show & Rey Mysterio

    Bad News Barrett Segment

Justin Roberts introduces “Bad News Barrett.” Barrett bangs on his podium to quiet the fans down. Barrett talks about the lottery. He’s afraid that he’s got some bad news. None of the fans in attendance will win even one cent of that money and will be forced to return to their miserable, lonely lifestyles. He concludes by saying “happy holidays.”

Backstage: The Authority & Randy Orton

Backstage, Triple H, Stephanie McMahon and Kane are talking until Randy Orton comes in complaining about being forced to face Daniel Bryan on RAW tonight. Stephanie reminds Orton that Bryan was almost decimated by all three members of The Wyatt Family only 24 hours ago. She plays to his ego a bit. HHH reminds Orton that he can’t just tell everyone who the champion is, he’s gotta show them why. He tells Orton not to worry because they’ve got his back. Orton storms off.

    Fandango vs. Dolph Ziggler

Fandango and Summer Rae make their way to the ring as Michael Cole informs us that after the break, Fandango will battle Dolph Ziggler in a rematch from Sunday night’s WWE TLC Kickoff Show. When we return from commercial, Fandango and Summer are still dancing around in the ring. Ziggler makes his entrance. The bell sounds and off we go.

Fandango punches away at Ziggler early but Ziggler answers back with a huge dropkick. Fandango clotheslines Ziggler out to the floor. Fandango throws Ziggler in the ring as a light “Summer Rae, Summer Rae” chant breaks out. Fandango is in firm control of the offense now as the fans rally behind Dolph with a loud “let’s go Ziggler” chant. Fandango slaps Ziggler in a choke as we get another shot of Summer Rae, who is looking particularly good tonight, standing on the outside. Out of nowhere, Ziggler rolls Fandango up and 1-2-3. Ziggler wins.

    Winner: Dolph Ziggler

Big E. Langston & Mark Henry vs. The Real Americans

When we return from commercial, The Real Americans are making their way to the ring. Out next is Big E. Langston, followed by Mark Henry, both of whom we saw walking backstage to the ring as we went into commercial break before this match. The bell sounds and Jack Swagger and Langston start things off in this tag-team match.

Within seconds, Langston blasts Swagger with a huge shoulder tackle, leading him to quickly tag out to Antonio Cesaro. Langston man-handles Cesaro quickly as well, so Cesaro tags Swagger back in. The fans chant “OU Sucks.” Langston tags Mark Henry back in. Henry plays to the crowd by throwing up the Texas Longhorns hand gesture, so they all pop. Henry beats up Swagger a bit and then tags Langston back in. Langston beats up Swagger for a few seconds and tags Henry back in. Lots of quick tags from both teams thus far.

Henry smashes Swagger with his big fat ass and then yells to the fans “that’s what I do,” before quickly tagging Langston back in. Swagger finally starts fighting back and then tags Cesaro in. Langston tags Henry back in. Cesaro punches Henry maybe twice and then tags Swagger in. Man there is a lot of tagging going on. Henry tags Langston back in within seconds as another “OU Sucks” chant breaks out. Swagger tags Cesaro back in. Langston clotheslines Cesaro out to the floor.

Back in the ring, Cesaro beats up Langston for a bit but then Langston regains control. Swagger changes that by yanking Langston out of the ring and stomping him out on the floor as we head to a mid-match commercial. When we return from commercial, Cesaro is beating up Langston as the fans cheer Langston on to make a tag to Henry. Cesaro powers Langston up for a gut-wrench suplex. Very impressive showing of strength by Cesaro. Cesaro tags in Swagger and Swagger picks up where Cesaro left off.

Langston tries fighting back but Swagger cuts him off and tags Cesaro back in. Langston dumps Swagger out to the floor and belly-to-belly suplexes Swagger. Langston and Cesaro are crawling for their corners to make the tag. Langston tags in Henry and Henry runs over Cesaro like a truck. He follows him down and crawl-headbutts him ala the Junkyard Dog. Henry powerslams Cesaro for a near fall that is broken up by Swagger. Cesaro goes for the swing on Henry but Langston tags in and flattens him. He hits the “Big Ending” and pins him. 1-2-3.

Winners: Big E. Langston & Mark Henry

    – As seen last night at WWE TLC, AJ Lee successfully defended the Divas Championship against Natalya after it was heavily speculated online that she would lose the title as punishment for a reported backstage incident with NBC personality Michelle Beadle at Wednesday’s Tribute to the Troops event—gamblers briefly predicted Natalya would win amidst reports of the ordeal (betting for the match was ultimately nixed from most sportsbooks), after Lee was considered a heavy favorite. Dave Meltzer stated this morning in a podcast on F4WOnline.com that Lee was always scripted to win the bout, as the match result was finalized before the story surfaced.

As reported earlier, WWE executives don’t want to draw any more attention to the Lee-Beadle story than necessary.

    – Seattle Seahawks defensive lineman Michael Bennett paid tribute to “Ravishing” Rick Rude on Sunday after sacking New York Giants star quarterback Peyton Manning. Here is an animation of Bennett performing the late wrestler’s signature dance.

    – Hulk Hogan’s WWE theme song, “Real American,” briefly played this afternoon on Fox News as bumper music for a story tease on Iowa GOP Senate candidates.

    8

    – WWE will be taping next week’s edition of RAW tomorrow night from Austin, Texas.

Variety.com is reporting that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has signed on to star in the big screen adaptation of the best-selling memoir “Not Without Hope.”

Based on the memoir by Nick Schuyler, the story follows four friends — Schuyler along with NFL players Marquis Cooper and Corey Smith, and Schuyler’s best friend, Will Bleakley, a former University of South Florida football player — who were on a fishing trip in the Gulf of Mexico when their boat capsized, stranding the four men at sea. In the days that followed, the men fought to survive as they awaited to see if help would come. Johnson will play Schuyler in the movie.

Relativity Media recently acquired the worldwide rights to finance, produce and distribute the film. Relativity CEO Ryan Kavanaugh will produce, with Dwayne Johnson, his manager Dany Garcia, Relativity President Tucker Tooley and French/West/Vaughan CEO/Chairman Rick French executive producing.
