Even AJ Styles makes mistakes.
The Phenomenal One defended his US Championship against Kevin Owens at the 2017 Battleground PPV. The ending of the match saw the champion locking Owens in a crossface, which Kevin countered into a successful pin attempt. Many wondered at the time if that was the original finish to the bout.
During the latest episode of his Phenomenally Retro podcast, the former World Champion confirmed this suspicion. AJ Styles revealed that he wasn’t actually supposed to lose that title match:
Here’s something that people don’t know. When I lost that one to him, I wasn’t supposed to lose. My shoulder was supposed to be up. I thought it was, I was pissed. I came back like, ‘What the freak is going on?’ Vince was like, ‘Your shoulder wasn’t up.’ I was like, ‘1000% it was up.’
I Was Wrong: AJ Styles
AJ Styles revealed that he was initially mad about the finish, thinking that his shoulder had been up and the referee made the mistake. After watching the replay however, he realized that Vince McMahon was right and he was the one who had made the mistake:
I’m mad, not because I lost, because why the freak did, he count something that wasn’t a pin? He goes, ‘Show him, take him to the truck and show him.’ I go back and watch it, sure enough, my shoulder is down. So, I go to Vince, ‘You’re right, I was wrong. Sorry about that.’
The WWE Hall of Famer also gave his thoughts on Sami Zayn losing the Undisputed Title at just 9 days during the episode. You can check out his remarks here.
