Lisfranc Injury: The Facts
A Lisfranc injury occurs when one of more of the metatarsal bones in the foot are displaced from the tarsus. The injury is named after Jacques Lisfranc de St. Martin, a French surgeon who noticed the injury amongst cavalrymen in the early 1800s.
While easily mistaken for a sprain, a Lisfranc injury is much different. Even a simple injury is a severe setback and may require surgery and months to heal, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
Styles' recovery time will depend on how severe the injury in his foot is. If there are no fractures or dislocations and the ligaments are not torn, then non-surgical treatment may be all that's needed with a recovery window of six to eight weeks. If surgery is required to realign the joints and return the fractured bone fragments, this could keep the wrestler out for many more months. The overall recovery process for resuming all activities may take 6 months to 1 year in some patients, according to the Academy.
