Former WWE Champion Drew McIntyre is heading to Spain this summer for Hollywood, not a SummerSlam return.
The wrestler has officially been cast in a new historical action drama titled The Last Druid, which will star Russell Crowe, according to a report from Deadline.com.
PWInsider noted that that film commitment is the direct reason WWE has nothing creatively lined up for ‘The Scottish Warrior’ at this time. Online reports had suggested he was on track for a comeback heading into SummerSlam. However, those rumors were incorrect.
Internally, there has been nothing planned for McIntyre, and his schedule is tilting toward film work rather than the ring.
Drew McIntyre Cast In ‘The Last Druid’ With Russell Crowe
The Last Druid is set to begin shooting in Spain this summer. The official plot description reads:
An Emperor discovers a secluded Druid stronghold, forcing a peaceful Celtic elder to take up arms and protect his family and people from annihilation.
Crowe is set to play the role of the Celtic elder at the center of the story. But McIntyre’s role has not been revealed yet.
McIntyre is represented by Paradigm and Rare Stndrd, which is the new agency founded by former Paradigm agent Nick LoPiccolo. He previously appeared in The Killer’s Game with former WWE star Dave Bautista and continues to build out his acting résumé while balancing wrestling.
What This Means For His WWE Status
The casting follows McIntyre’s work on the Highlander reboot in Scotland, where he stars opposite Henry Cavill. As we previously reported on McIntyre filming the Highlander reboot without missing WWE dates, the balance between film and wrestling has now tipped further toward the screen.
The new report also runs counter to an earlier piece on a supposed McIntyre WWE return timeline, which suggested a comeback was near.
On the WWE side, McIntyre last appeared at WrestleMania 42, where he came up short against Jacob Fatu. His final WWE storyline ran through his feud with Fatu, including the moment we covered when McIntyre took a brutal shot at Jacob Fatu before SmackDown.
