Sheamus has rejected a restructured contract extension from WWE, with Fightful Select reporting he viewed the financial offer as an insult given his body of work, though he remains under contract for the moment.
Sheamus had signed a new WWE deal in 2023, which he publicly described as a five-year contract. However, sources told Fightful the deal is expiring sooner than expected, though the specific circumstances were not made clear.
A WWE source told Fightful that Sheamus was offered less money to stay, and he viewed that as disrespectful given his contributions to the company over more than 15 years. Dave Meltzer separately noted on Wrestling Observer Radio that TKO’s approach with veterans on the perceived downside of their careers mirrors that of an NFL franchise: willing to pay top dollar for stars they view as current draws but cutting costs on established names they believe are past their peak.
AEW sources had no advance knowledge of the news, according to Fightful. Sheamus and Claudio Castagnoli remain close friends, and Castagnoli is expected to be among those who advocate for Sheamus joining AEW.
One AEW source noted that CMLL and other outside opportunities also exist that would allow the two to continue working together. He is also expected to draw significant interest from the independent circuit both domestically and internationally, as well as from the convention and signing circuit. Sheamus is currently based out of Nashville.
On the name rights question, Sheamus’ real name is Stephen Farrelly, but he used the name “Sheamus O’Shaunessy” outside WWE for years prior to signing, making it plausible he could use a version of that name going forward. Fightful noted they are working to confirm his name rights situation. He does have professional representation in place.
