Gunther is set for his first big challenge after retiring John Cena.
The former World Champion has been mocking the legacy of the Cenation Leader after making Cena tap out in his final match at Saturday Night's Main Event. A number of WWE stars have taken exception to this behaviour from the Ring General, with AJ Styles being the most prominent name among them.
This week's episode of Raw saw the two coming face-to-face in the ring for the first time since SNME. Tensions continued to rise with Gunther not letting up on his mockery, and it finally led to Styles slapping the 38-year-old.

While the former Imperium leader did not respond to this physicality from the Phenomenal One in the moment, WWE has since announced a match between the two for the January 12 episode of the Red Branded show.
Gunther has continued wrestling on House Shows since the Cena match, and he also defeated R-Truth in a short match last Monday. The former Bullet Club leader, however, is likely to prove to be a much bigger challenge for the Raw star.
AJ Styles has announced 2026 will be his last active year in wrestling, and the belief is his WWE contract expires before WrestleMania 42. This makes the rivalry even more interesting as it gives his opponent the chance to potentially retire yet another veteran after Cena and Goldberg in 2025.
