For several minutes, Chelsea Green found herself hanging upside down from a ladder rung at WWE SummerSlam. A sudden burst of energy, though, returned her to a vertical base to then ascend the ladder, which led her directly to the interim WWE Women’s Championship hanging above.
With all other competitors out of commission in that moment, Green’s path to the title was clear, as was her long-time dream. And given the response, it’s surely something she’ll never forget.
So I was just telling the production team that it was even better than I had dreamt of,” Green said on The Nikki & Brie Show. “And when I dreamt of it, it was so far-fetched. It was so like, I hope this happens. I wish it would happen, but it probably won’t. And I’ve come to terms with that, too. I’ve come to terms with like the fact that I’ve done enough to make myself proud and my future family proud. Then when it happened, it was so much better.
Every face in the crowd was smiling. Everyone was cheering. Everyone was screaming. I heard my mom from across the ring, ‘Get up, Chels!’ Everything. I heard it all.
According to Green, she even heard one of the referees muttering “sweet nothings” as she hung upside down. Once she officially capture the Interim WWE Women’s Championship, another then encouraged her to absorb her crowning moment, which came inside the thunderous U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
I forced myself to look around and have that moment that I’m sure on camera for the television audience, made all the difference,” she added.
Green’s Future As Interim WWE Women’s Champion Unclear
Unfortunately for Green, the high of her title win has since been overshadowed by a broken orbital bone sustained on the SummerSlam fallout episode of SmackDown.
The Canada native confirmed the injury in a recent Instagram video, indicating that she was taking things day by day. Her current recovery timeline is unclear.
The reigning WWE Women’s Champion Rhea Ripley underwent surgery for a torn meniscus last week. WWE officials reportedly hope she will return in time for the Royal Rumble in February 2027.
