CM Punk, the Undisputed WWE Champion, has opened up about the philosophy that carried him into the UFC octagon.
He actively chases opportunities that terrify him, treating fear as a signal to move forward rather than a warning to back off. The current WWE Champion framed his short-lived MMA venture not as a failure to dwell on, but as proof of a mindset he still lives by.
Speaking on the What’s Your Story? podcast, Punk explained that his motivation comes from refusing to let potential regret win out over risk.
I am afforded opportunities that scare the s**t out of me. That to me, is where my motivation comes from,” Punk said. “I came from nothing. To me there’s nowhere else to go but up.
How Dana White Fast-Tracked The Plan
Punk recalled that the original idea was to build slowly, the way most fighters do. That plan changed the moment UFC President Dana White got involved.
I can’t remember, I was like 35 when I was like ‘Oh yeah, I’m gonna fight in MMA now,’” Punk said.
It was something I wanted to do and I was gonna do it. I was gonna start as an amateur and then of course Dana was like ‘No, you’re not doing that, you’re gonna fight for me.’ And I was just like ‘Uh, I can already hear the criticism Dana.’
Rather than shrink from the scrutiny of debuting on the sport’s biggest stage, Punk leaned into it. He described weighing the decision through what he called a “deathbed scenario,” measuring the fear of public failure against the regret of never trying.
I don’t wanna be laying there thinking, I should have said yes to that. Because what’s the worst thing that’s gonna happen? I’m gonna get beat up? Well s***. It’s in front of the entire world? Well s*** ok, alright,” he said.
Punk was clear that money never factored into the choice.
It’s not about the money, it’s not about anything else,” he said. “You’re gonna pay me that? Oh ok, well I’m gonna do it anyway. I don’t like saying no to things that scare the s*** out of me.
Riding High As WWE Champion
The reflection lands at a career peak for Punk. On the July 6, 2026 episode of Raw in Chicago, he defeated Sami Zayn to capture the WWE Championship, a win WWE’s official profile lists as his third reign with the title. That victory ended a 13-year gap since he last held the championship, according to WWE.com.
His path back to the top was closely tracked in the weeks beforehand. Punk had been off WWE television leading into the Chicago show, with June reporting indicating the absence was not disciplinary and that fresh merchandise and creative plans were already in motion.
