ESPN is described as an active and idea-generating partner in its PLE deal with WWE — not a silent backer — with Dave Meltzer corroborating in the new issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that the network pushed for a six-match Night of Champions card specifically to give ESPN Unlimited subscribers enough exclusive content to justify subscribing.
From Meltzer’s report:
WrestleVotes reported that this show was six matches instead of five due to ESPN feeling that they needed at least four matches not on television to convince people who aren’t ESPN Unlimited subscribers to subscribe. This was largely confirmed to us as accurate and it was noted that ESPN are definitely not silent partners in this deal and are always coming up with ideas.
ESPN simulcasts the first hour of WWE premium live events for free on traditional television, with the remainder exclusive to ESPN Unlimited. A six-match card instead of five meant four bouts sat behind the subscription paywall rather than three.
The five-year ESPN-WWE PLE partnership launched in September 2025 with WWE Wrestlepalooza. No announcement has been made on whether that event returns to the 2026 calendar. Triple H has previously described the promotional exposure WWE receives from ESPN’s weekly coverage during PLE weeks as “worth its weight in gold” for elevating the company in the broader cultural conversation. Internationally, WWE premium live events continue to air on Netflix.
