Carmelo Hayes’ latest WWE setback isn’t just about another loss. It’s about a pattern that is becoming increasingly difficult for fans to ignore.
In his hometown of Boston, Hayes finally received a major opportunity when he challenged Baron Corbin for the United States Championship. But instead of turning that moment into a breakthrough, Hayes was defeated clean with the End of Days, leaving Corbin with the title and fans questioning what comes next for Melo.
The frustration online was immediate. Some fans accused Triple H of repeatedly mishandling Hayes, while others sarcastically suggested that another defeat could send him straight back to catering. Another reaction questioned why WWE continues presenting Hayes as a babyface when his booking hasn’t allowed him to build sustained momentum.
The harshest criticism argued that WWE simply doesn’t view Hayes as a future singles champion, with the fan insisting that Melo should have been the one leaving Boston with the United States Championship.
And that’s where the bigger issue comes in.
Hayes has repeatedly been benched from major Premium Live Events, missing both WrestleMania 42 and SummerSlam.
The SummerSlam situation is particularly telling. When Baron Corbin returned in July and attacked both Hayes and Trick Williams, it appeared WWE was building toward a three-way storyline. Instead, Trick faced Corbin at SummerSlam while Hayes wasn’t even booked.
So this isn’t simply about losing to Corbin.
Hayes continues to deliver strong performances, but those performances haven’t translated into consistent progression. Even in Boston, Corbin’s victory generated a relatively muted reaction, while Trick Williams and Lil Yachty received the louder responses.
At some point, WWE needs to provide a clearer direction.
Is Carmelo Hayes genuinely being developed as a future singles star, or is WWE repeatedly giving him opportunities without actually committing to making him one?
