Former AEW Wrestler Is Getting WWE Tryout

ByAndrew RavensProfessional Wrestling Journalist

A former AEW fan favorite is getting a look from WWE.

Fightful Select’s Sean Ross Sapp has confirmed that KJ Orso is in Minnesota and among the talent planned for a WWE tryout this week. The timing lines up with SummerSlam weekend in Minneapolis, when WWE often runs tryout camps around its major events. No reason was given for why this particular tryout wasn’t previously announced.

Fans will best know Orso as Fuego Del Sol. The 30-year-old from Mobile, Alabama spent years in AEW as the masked luchador from 2020 to 2023, becoming a cult favorite despite being booked almost exclusively in a losing role on Dark and Rampage. After leaving the company, he returned to the independent scene and reinvented himself, shedding the Fuego mask at a GCW event in 2025 by losing it to Atticus Cogar. Rebranded under his real name, Orso leaned into a sharper, more aggressive heel persona that has made him one of the more praised acts on the indies, especially in GCW.

He isn’t a complete stranger to WWE, either. Orso wrestled a squash match against Erick Rowan on Raw back in January 2020 as enhancement talent, though at the time he kept that appearance separate from his masked Fuego character.

Orso has also maintained a positive relationship with AEW since his departure, popping up at AEW and ROH tapings multiple times in recent years, though not since the rebrand to KJ Orso.

A tryout is no guarantee of a contract, but for a well-traveled worker in the middle of a career resurgence, a look from the industry leader is a notable step.
