The long-simmering personal feud between “The Ring General” Gunther and SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis has been made official for SummerSlam.
The match was announced live during the SummerSlam Kickoff Show at Fanatics Fest in New York City. Gunther attacked Aldis at the event, prompting WWE Chief Content Officer Triple H to step in and set the match on the spot. Triple H later posted the following on X:

The high-stakes singles match will take place during the two-night SummerSlam event on August 1–2 at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Background: Escalating Tension Reaches Boiling Point
The rivalry traces back to Gunther’s frustrations in the Undisputed WWE Championship picture. At WWE Night of Champions on June 27 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Gunther competed in a Triple Threat main event with Cody Rhodes and Sami Zayn. Zayn captured the title, leaving Gunther empty-handed once again.
Immediately after the show, Gunther confronted Aldis backstage, accusing the SmackDown GM of sabotaging his title opportunities and labeling him a “failed wrestler.” The exchange turned physical before officials separated them. As a result, both men were sent home, and Aldis was placed on administrative leave, with Adam Pearce temporarily running both brands.
Tensions continued on the July 11 episode of SmackDown, where Gunther attacked Aldis with a rear naked choke after being unhappy with match bookings. The situation intensified further at Saturday Night’s Main Event on July 18 at Madison Square Garden. During the main event tag team match (Gunther & Sami Zayn vs. CM Punk & Cody Rhodes), Aldis interfered by pulling the referee from the ring and striking Gunther with the championship belt, costing Gunther’s team the win and preserving the one-on-one title match between Punk and Rhodes at SummerSlam.
Attack at Fanatics Fest Forces Official Announcement
The feud reached its breaking point today at the SummerSlam Kickoff Show during Fanatics Fest in NYC. Gunther attacked Aldis on site, leading Triple H to immediately make Gunther vs. Nick Aldis official for SummerSlam. The tweet from Triple H followed shortly after the live announcement.
The matchup marks Nick Aldis’ first in-ring appearance for WWE since joining the company as an on-screen authority figure. A former two-time NWA Worlds Heavyweight Champion, Aldis will look to prove himself against one of WWE’s most dominant competitors. Gunther, embracing his “career killer” persona, will aim to settle the score once and for all with the man he holds responsible for derailing his championship pursuits.
