Chelsea Green is keeping the title, and WWE is not writing her off television either.
WrestleVotes, reporting on Fightful Select, says WWE remains optimistic about Green’s situation and has no interest in interrupting the momentum she has built. A source said she is not expected to be removed from television or stripped of the Interim WWE Women’s Championship, and that as of Wednesday she was scheduled to appear on Friday’s SmackDown. She is still expected to be out of action for a number of weeks.
Part of the reasoning is commercial. The report says WWE was impressed by the social media numbers Green’s title win generated at SummerSlam.
Green broke her orbital bone on the August 7th SmackDown in Philadelphia, taking Fatal Influence’s finish in an impromptu tag title match alongside Tiffany Stratton. Lainey Reid landed on her face. She went to the emergency room and confirmed the injury on Instagram the next day.
It feels frustrating. I’m upset. I feel like if I didn’t have bad luck, I’d have no luck at all. I just need to take a little bit more time to process.
She also said she needs time to heal from what she described as head trauma, and that this one feels different from injuries she has previously worked into her act.
The title she is keeping is itself a stopgap. Rhea Ripley remains WWE Women’s Champion and is out after surgery on a torn meniscus, and Green won the interim version in a five-woman ladder match at SummerSlam on August 2, the first world title of her career.
