WWE legend John Cena was reportedly not in plans for being the host of WrestleMania 42.
According to Wrestlevotes Radio on Fightful Select, the hosting role was not part of WWE's original plans at the time of his farewell bout against Gunther.
Sources told Fightful that the opportunity came together earlier this year. The decision to bring Cena back as host developed after his retirement match had already taken place, marking a shift in WWE's creative direction for the premium live event.
John Cena Stays Involved With WWE
The report further suggested that the 17-time World Champion has agreed to a new long-term contract with WWE that excludes in-ring wrestling.
WrestleMania 42 will mark another high-profile appearance for Cena in a non-wrestling capacity. The hosting role allows WWE to feature one of its biggest stars at the company's flagship event while respecting his retirement from in-ring competition.
WrestleMania 42 is scheduled to take place on April 18 and 19 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.
