Johnny Gargano Is Not Leaving WWE Despite Bio Confusion

Johnny Gargano’s X bio still reads “Pro Wrestler, Clevelander.” with no mention of WWE, and that detail has fans buzzing about his future with the company again. The bio has looked essentially the same since Gargano dropped all WWE and NXT references from it in October 2021, months before his original run with the company ended.

Gargano returned to WWE on August 22, 2022, with a surprise appearance on Raw in Toronto that ended with him superkicking Austin Theory. Despite four years back on the roster since, including stints on both NXT and SmackDown, the bio was never updated to reflect his employer.

The renewed chatter lines up with a stretch of real uncertainty around Gargano’s future. His longtime tag team partner in #DIY, Tommaso Ciampa, left WWE when his contract expired in January and signed with AEW days later. Fightful Select later reported that Ciampa kept his own departure date private, and that even Gargano did not know exactly when it was coming.

That uncertainty has already been addressed directly. Fightful Select reported in March that Gargano remains “firmly under contract” with WWE, and there has been no update since suggesting that has changed.

The SmackDown Storyline

On screen, Gargano has spent more than six months portrayed as unresponsive and depressed on SmackDown, a storyline that began after Axiom reclaimed a mask Gargano had stolen from him in January. He has repeatedly been shown lying face down on equipment crates during segments involving Candice LeRae, Sami Zayn and CM Punk, with no clear end in sight for the gimmick.

Whatever WWE has planned for the angle, the bio isn’t a clue toward it. It has stayed the same through two separate contracts and a full roster move, and nothing points to that changing now.
