Mason Rook Could Be Out Longer After Failing NXT Clearance

Mason Rook’s absence from WWE NXT may last longer than a one-week scratch. Rook was pulled from his scheduled NXT Championship match against Grayson Waller on the September 29 episode after he was not medically cleared to compete, and early reporting suggests the situation could stretch out.

WWE confirmed ahead of the show that Rook was not cleared, while still having Waller defend the title. On the broadcast, NXT General Manager Robert Stone told Waller that Rook would be out for the “foreseeable future,” which led to an open challenge for the championship.

Alvarez: He Could Be Out For A While

Speaking on Wrestling Observer Live, Bryan Alvarez said there is still very little circulating about what is wrong with Rook. The only update he had heard, Alvarez said, is that Rook could potentially be sidelined for an extended stretch.

“The only thing that I’ve heard, other than, like, virtually no one knows what’s going on, is that it’s possible that he could be out for a while,” Alvarez said, per eWrestlingNews.

“I don’t know what that means. I don’t know what, in terms of a while, means, but hopefully whatever it is is cleared up quickly and he is able to get back in the ring,” he added.

WWE has not disclosed the nature of Rook’s medical issue, and there is no public timetable for his return.

Rook Calls It A Speed Bump

Rook earned the title shot by winning a triple threat over Saquon Shugars and Tony D’Angelo on the September 15 episode of NXT. He last wrestled at a live event on September 19 and appeared on television the following week for a promo exchange with Waller.

After Tuesday’s show, Rook posted on X: “I’m sorry. Sometimes life is cruel. Every fibre of my being wanted to compete tonight but unfortunately it is out of my control. I promise this is just a speed bump and not a road block.”

Until WWE offers more detail, the clearest public picture remains Stone’s “foreseeable future” line on NXT and Alvarez’s report that Rook could be out for a while.
