Randy Orton Hurting Days Before WrestleMania 42 Title Match

Randy Orton prepares for his WWE Championship match against Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 42

Randy Orton is reportedly dealing with physical issues just days before his WWE Championship match against Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 42. The news raises questions about the outcome of one of the event's marquee matches.

According to Dave Meltzer in this week's Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Orton is "hurting" heading into the Premium Live Event. While the storyline suggests Orton is positioned to win, the result may not be set in stone due to his physical condition.

Pat McAfee Stipulation Complicates Outcome

On the April 10 episode of SmackDown, Pat McAfee cut a promo stating he would never do anything involving WWE again if Orton fails to defeat Rhodes for the title. That stipulation would typically indicate a clear Orton victory.

However, Meltzer noted the uncertainty surrounding the finish. He wrote in the Newsletter that "Orton is hurting so there is a possibility that would change, as it would make no sense for Orton to win if he has to take time off."

Meltzer added that McAfee's statement "came across like it's as close to a lock as possible," suggesting WWE creative had been leaning toward an Orton championship win before his physical issues emerged.

Backlash Tag Match Still Scheduled

Despite the injury concerns, the tag team match pitting Jelly Roll and Cody Rhodes against Pat McAfee and Randy Orton remains scheduled to headline the May 9 Backlash Premium Live Event. That booking indicates WWE currently has no plans for McAfee to leave or for Orton to take extended time off immediately following WrestleMania.
