Reason Why WWE Put The NXT Title On Grayson Waller

ByAndrew RavensProfessional Wrestling Journalist

The plan to put the NXT Championship on Grayson Waller came together fast.

WrestleVotes reports on Fightful Select that the decision followed quickly once Waller’s move from Raw to NXT was settled. Shawn Michaels got clearance that Waller would be in NXT for the foreseeable future, and the idea of putting the belt on him surfaced almost immediately after that.

The outlet was told there are a number of people in WWE who see significant upside in Waller as a top heel.

Waller won the title at Heatwave on Sunday in Edinburg, stealing the pin on Tony D’Angelo in a four-way that also involved Cruz Montana and Zilla Fatu.

The loss is not meant as a mark against D’Angelo. WrestleVotes reports the title change is not an indictment of him. The outlet checked with main roster sources and was told D’Angelo’s name has not been discussed for a call-up. He is booked for a six-man tag on the September 8 NXT.

Waller has not been quiet since the move. He said recently that he was not demoted to NXT, and he confronted CM Punk backstage at an NXT live event in Petersburg, Virginia, telling the Undisputed WWE Champion he needed permission before appearing on another NXT show. He later said the sight of the NXT locker room lining up for photos with Punk embarrassed him.
