Roman Reigns has opened up about his ongoing battle with leukemia, revealing that while the disease remains under control, he has not yet reached complete molecular remission.
The WWE World Heavyweight Champion discussed his health during a recent interview with Men’s Health while talking about recovery methods used by athletes.
When the subject of peptides such as BPC-157 came up, Reigns explained that his history with chronic myeloid leukemia means he cannot afford to experiment with substances without considering the potential impact on his health.
Reigns said he is still fighting CML “down to the wire” and has to be extremely careful with anything he puts into his body. That caution has kept him from trying certain recovery treatments despite hearing positive things about them.
Well, with my medical history, I have to be very careful. I’m, still to this day, down to the wire, fighting CML. So I have to be very, very careful when it comes to different things like that. So I try—anything invasive, any type of, you know, anything like that, I just can’t take a chance on it.
He also provided more detail on where his leukemia currently stands. According to Reigns, the disease is under control and his numbers are below the baseline doctors are watching. However, tests continue to detect minute traces.
I’ve heard all kinds of cool stuff about that, but I just haven’t been able to break into that or sample. Maybe one day it’ll be a question for my doctor, but it’s just something that, yeah I’ve been able to just outwork everything at this point. So if I can keep doing that, then I’ll stay that route for now.
That’s right. Yeah. And we’re under control and we’re under the actual baseline, but to be in molecular remission, it has to be almost zeroed out, and there’s just still those minute traces, like 0.31, you know what I mean? But they count. So I still just have to be very careful and very smart, you know what I mean?
Those remaining traces mean Reigns continues to approach his health cautiously rather than treating his previous return to WWE as the end of the battle.
Reigns was first diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia in 2007 when he was 22 years old. After years in remission, he announced in October 2018 that the disease had returned and stepped away from WWE, relinquishing the Universal Championship. He returned in February 2019 and announced that his leukemia was back in remission.
Years later, Reigns remains one of WWE’s biggest stars, but his latest comments offer a reminder that his fight with CML continues behind the scenes even while the condition remains controlled.
