The Rock Addresses His Dramatic Weight Loss

ByAndrew RavensProfessional Wrestling Journalist

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has explained why he looks like a different person, and the answer starts with a film role.

Johnson put on roughly 30 pounds to play Mark Kerr in The Smashing Machine, reaching around 282lbs and holding that frame for months of filming. He is now 235lbs for Benny Safdie’s Lizard Music, and posted on Instagram to answer the questions that have followed him since.

I took almost a year to lose approximately 50lbs, from stepping on set to film, “The Smashing Machine” weighing 282lbs, to my current weight today, 235lbs. Last time I was this weight, was my freshman football season at University of Miami. I was a little “light in the —-“, for a defensively tackle, but still a monster.

He says the slower approach was the point.

I wanted to take my time, drop the weight in a smart, wise and healthy way, nothing extreme.

The rest of the post gets into his training and diet, including cutting refined sugar, which he describes as the single biggest change for someone who spent years eating at a surplus.

Carrying the extra weight took a toll while he was doing it. Johnson injured an elbow during production on The Smashing Machine and has now said he dealt with a calf injury on the same shoot.

He did not close the post on the physical side of it.
