The Rock’s ‘Moana’ Underwhelms In Box Office Debut

The numbers are in for the live-action version of “Moana,” and by most accounts, they are a disappointment.

The film drew $43 million domestically and $52 million internationally for a $95 million worldwide total, enough to finish No. 1 for the weekend but well short of what Disney had hoped for.

The remake carried a hefty $250 million production budget, a figure that doesn’t even include marketing. That’s a tough number to justify given that the animated original arrived just a decade ago and its sequel, “Moana 2,” was released in 2024. Disney had been projecting a $60 million to $65 million domestic debut and roughly $140 million globally, making the actual haul a significant miss.

The opening also barely avoided the bottom of the list for Disney’s recent live-action remakes. It edged out 2025’s “Snow White,” which drew $42 million in its domestic opening weekend before finishing its run with about $87 million domestically and $205 million worldwide.

The Rock stars as Maui in the film, reprising the demigod he voices in the animated movies.
