Lil Yachty could not beat Baron Corbin. He did not need to.
Yachty had to survive five minutes with the United States Champion at Sunday Night’s Main Event to earn Trick Williams a title shot later in the night. He lasted, Williams got the match, and Williams left State Farm Arena with the belt.
The stipulation match was chaos. Corbin rode out on a motorcycle and offered Yachty a chance to walk away. Yachty took a cheap shot instead and nearly stole a pin in the opening seconds, then spent most of the five minutes running. Corbin caught him, threw him into the barricade and cleared out several members of his entourage before Yachty found a kendo stick under the ring.
It bought him time and little else. Corbin hit two End of Days and was setting up a table when Yachty caught him with a low blow. The clock ran out. Corbin put him through the table anyway.
Williams did not wait for a formal introduction. He hit the ring, the bell went, and he sent Corbin into the announce table before going to check on Yachty.
Corbin took over from there, tossing Williams into the steps and dumping him off the apron. He got a near fall off Deep Six, then a chokeslam after Williams missed the Trick Shot.
The finish came off the title belt. Yachty held onto it when Corbin reached for it, and the distraction let Williams land a spinning kick for two. Corbin got the belt into the ring behind the referee’s back and hit Williams with it anyway. Williams kicked out. When Corbin went for End of Days, Williams countered into the Trick Shot and won it in 11:14.
That closes a loop. Corbin returned to SmackDown in July by breaking up a Williams title defense against Carmelo Hayes, took the belt from him at SummerSlam by hitting him with it behind the referee’s back, and beat him again in the rematch. He put Yachty through a table on that SummerSlam night too.
